Connecting to the network Since my last report, we have held the Master Joiners AGM, providing a good opportunity to reflect on the past year and look at where our focus needs to be going forward.

The past year has not been easy for many members. Workloads remain patchy, costs are still high, and confidence across the wider construction sector continues to vary from region to region. While there are some encouraging signs, the reality is that many businesses are still working through reduced workloads and tight margins.

In times like these, the value of being connected to others in the industry becomes even more important. Master Joiners is not just about a name or a logo. It is about having a network of people who understand the challenges

of running a joinery business and who are prepared to share knowledge, support one another and work together for the good of the industry.

Membership renewals have recently gone out, and I encourage all members to take the time to look at the work being done on their behalf. Over the past year this has included advocacy, careers promotion, industry reports, salary benchmarking, professional development, branch activity, complaints support and ongoing work around health and safety and industry standards.

Attracting and developing the next generation also remains one of our biggest challenges.

We need more young people to see joinery as a skilled, modern and worthwhile career. That means continuing to promote the trade, supporting apprentices and making sure training reflects the technical skills, digital systems and problem solving now required in our workshops.

Advocacy continues to be a major focus. We need to make sure joinery is properly understood and represented when decisions are being made around vocational training, workforce development, immigration and standards. This work does not always produce

There is also a lot happening behind the scenes. Work is continuing to improve member services, strengthen health and safety and standards support, lift the visibility of members online and plan future events, including the 2027 Conference.

None of this happens without the time and effort of our members, branch representatives, volunteers, Council and the national office team. Thank you to everyone who continues to contribute. The strength of Master Joiners has always come from its people.

As we move into spring, let us remain realistic about the challenges but positive about the opportunities ahead. Keep talking to each other, keep supporting local members and keep promoting the quality and professionalism that sets a Master Joiner apart.

Conference at an exciting venue

I

t has been an interesting quarter especially with the Master Joiners Conference held in May in Queenstown. We covered all the major winners in our June issue. It was held over two days, in wonderful Queenstown. Although I missed the Friday I arrived in time for the Master Joiners Awards on the Saturday.

All the reports I have heard have been very positive about the programme content. The Awards night was very pleasing even with a much smaller number attending. A nod to the organising team from Master Joiners: a job well done. Congratulations must go to all the Award winners and especially the Supreme and Premier Award winners. They were outstanding. We have coverage of both in this issue. I had never been to the Millbrook Estate before but it was amazing and I fully understand why it is such a successful golf course and event venue.

We have a full house once again with some eye catching storylines. Complex manufacturing is an interesting one with a look at the top end machinery – 5 axis CNC’s – with some interesting stories such as a look at casket manufacturer Windsor Industries and the latest from the mainstream CNC machinery manufacturers. Perennial pictorial favourite door hardware is once again well represented. Always something new in that field. The other main feature looks at the world of sinks and benchtops, once again lots from some of our leading suppliers here in New Zealand.

Looking forward now to the coming spring then summer and hopefully more stable times around the world.

SCM invests in New Zealand SCM announces the strengthening of its presence in New Zealand with the introduction of a new directly managed local organisation working alongside local dealer Machines R Us. This strategic investment confirms the Group’s commitment to laying the foundations for future growth in the woodworking industry, despite the current challenging macroeconomic environment.

SCM has been present in the New Zealand market for around 40 years through a network of local partners and, over the past ten years, has worked with Machines R US, developing an in-depth understanding of the needs of companies operating in the region.

Following the appointment of two specialised professionals dedicated to sales and technical service activities, SCM’s goal is to progressively expand the local team over the coming months.

SCM’s direct presence will enable the Group to work even more closely with woodworking companies requiring specialised expertise in SCM solutions, with a particular focus on high technology projects, engineering and integrated solutions aimed at improving efficiency, flexibility and process optimisation, while helping manufacturers address the shortage of skilled labour. The new SCM team will work in close collaboration with Machines R US, leveraging the complementary strengths of both organisations to provide New Zealand woodworking companies with comprehensive solutions, expert advice and improved aftersales services.

Machines R US will also continue to serve as the sole dealer in New Zealand for the other Italian brands of the Group, Mecal Machinery and CMS specialised on non-wood applications.

Competenz & EMA strengthen support for NZ businesses Competenz and the EMA (Employers and Manufacturers Association) have announced a new partnership that extends support for employers beyond apprenticeships and vocational training into broader business capability.

With both organisations supporting thousands of New Zealand businesses across engineering, manufacturing and trades sectors, the partnership gives Competenz employers access to practical business support that extends beyond training, including employment relations and legal services, HR resources, and leadership and health and safety courses at EMA member rates. Employers new to the EMA will also receive a discount on their first year of membership.

Ruth Cooper, Executive Director of Competenz, said the partnership reflects a deep understanding of what our industries and employers need. "We know our industry trades, and engineering and manufacturing employers inside out.

Hafele hosts Master Joiners In mid August the Auckland Master Joiners held one of their regular meetings at the headquarters of Hafele NZ in Auckland’s East Tamaki. These meetings enable Auckland members to catch up with fellow members and find out about any new developments.

While convened by Secretary Michael Bangs, Auckland President Rob Pickup gave an interesting resume of the Master Joiners Conference held in Queenstown along with other business matters. Hafele as host had a quick chat about a couple of new products including their sliding door range explained by Key Account Manager Braden Lye (pictured) then after the meeting they put on a few refreshments. Auckland Master Joiners wish to thank Hafele for the use of their facilities. 

Nick Carajannis to head Porta NZ Porta is pleased to welcome Nick Carajannis to the team as Head of Porta NZ. Following the successful introduction of polytec to New Zealand late last year, Porta is now focused on further strengthening its presence, with plans to expand into the South Island. Nick will play a key role in driving this growth, developing the brand and building strong relationships with customers and industry partners across the country.

A highly respected leader, Nick brings a wealth of industry knowledge, experience and leadership to the role. His appointment marks an exciting next chapter for Porta NZ as the business continues to grow and expand its offering to the New Zealand joinery industry. 

Biesse Open Day Industry collaboration shares knowledge & supports charity Early September saw this years edition of the annual Biesse open day at their Wiri show room in Auckland.

Along with partners Blum and Kitchen Mania, Biesse hosted a tech showcase featuring the latest in their multi material manufacturing solutions along with product from trade partners in door systems, software, dust extraction, panel and hardware. All the while supporting the I Am Hope Foundation who are dedicated to saving lives in our community.

Visiting manufacturers from around the region were able to view live demonstrations of Biesse machinery covering the processing of timber, panel, glass and stone before being ferried to several factories around Auckland to see similar machines used in specific applications at Kitchen Mania in Mt Wellington, Next Level Joinery on the North Shore and Western Caskets in Kumeu. Contributions from those enjoying the visit were matched

by Biesse and its support partners to provide a sizable cheque in support of the I Am Hope Foundation.

Back at the Biesse Showroom attendees were again able to discuss aspect of business and Biesse’s manufacturing options along with the opportunity to discuss product with trade representatives of Blum, polytec, Joinery IT, Airtight Solutions and Robertson & Sinclair, effectively enjoying a one stop shop opportunity covering most of the requirement in a modern manufacturing shop And as with previous editions, amongst all the talk and networking Biesse showed their usual skill and style in hosting an excellent barbecue lunch and refreshments for all those present. 

Celebrating a new era of opportunities & inspiration Blum Reno On 2 July the team at Blum held a celebration to mark sixteen years since they opened their purpose built head office, showroom and warehouse facility in the Auckland suburb of Avondale. The building is the same as back in 2010 but the interior has undergone a number of significant changes which invited guests were shown in four mini tour groups kicking off in the early afternoon.

I started off with the kitchen test drive and Age Explorer® where we learned about how customers and designers can use the space to test their kitchens in real ratios. One of the guests put on the Age explorer® suit to show how you can experience aging and the significance of designing kitchens that will last you for future aging requirements.

Then our group moved to the warehouse facility where Managing Director Mike Hawkins took us through their expanded automatic warehouse and new crane system functions and staff in action.

Of real interest to me was the next session where we learned about Blum’s newest product called PLICOBOX, a new concept for storage in living spaces.

Simple: Fold. Push. Done! without tools. We also learned the latest in Blum marketing and various machines and jigs they have on offer.

lum Auckland recently unveiled its redesigned Auckland showroom with a sensational celebration. Over 100 cabinet makers, designers and industry partners joined the Blum team in a day not to be forgotten.

Blum hosted workshops on new products, conducted a tour of the new automated warehouse system, and showcased the stunning new displays throughout the day. Once the afternoon turned into evening, a lively Oompah band pied-piped the guests into Blum's very own beer tent, the “Golden Hinge’’, to celebrate the opening in style.

The final session was a look at the new showroom. This was for me the most impressive session. It heralded a significant shift for Blum: a tour of their latest products and how Blum is now moving into the whole home and not just a kitchen focus. Blum’s Sales Manager Joseph Eggers adeptly took us around the various rooms in the house where Blum is now making inroads. It is a showroom worth a real gander.

Through all of this there was a lot of tasty food and wine on offer which culminated after the four tours were done with a classic Blum Party with music food and drink to christen the new look Blum HQ. My thanks to the team for their great hospitality.

s we head into the final quarter of the year, there’s been plenty happening at Laminex worth sharing with you all.

Our Taupō plant remains front and centre of our investment programme, and momentum continues to build. This is one of the most significant manufacturing investments Laminex has undertaken, and it’s exciting to see it taking shape. The plant will see us transition from traditional particleboard to our NEW locally produced Fine Strand board; strengthening our manufacturing capability right here in New Zealand.

For our customers, this means greater supply continuity and confidence that the products you rely on are grown, manufactured, and supplied on home soil. In a world where global supply chains remain unpredictable, that’s something we don’t take for granted, and it’s a big part of why I’m so proud of the team driving this project forward.

Investment in local manufacturing isn’t just about the plant itself. It’s about the capability we’re building around it, the skills, the systems, and the people who make it all work. Every step we take towards commissioning Taupō is a step towards a more resilient supply chain for the joinery industry, and we’ll keep you updated as the project progresses towards commissioning.

We know your time is precious, so we genuinely appreciate the honesty and detail so many of you shared with us. Your feedback covered everything from ordering and delivery through to product quality and support, and it’s given us a clear, honest picture of where we’re getting it right and where we need to lift our game.

Our team is currently working through the results in detail, and we’ll be developing a set of actions and improvements based on what you’ve told us. This isn’t a box-ticking exercise for us; it’s a genuine opportunity to strengthen the way we work with you. We’ll share more on the specific changes we’re making as this work progresses, and we’d encourage you to keep the feedback coming, formally through surveys like this one, or simply through your regular contacts at Laminex.

he Myles Sellers Memorial Trophy recognises outstanding culture in joinery. The award reflects how Myles and his wife, Margarette, valued their workforce and believed a business could be a family - celebrating businesses that put people first by creating supportive workplaces, embracing change with empathy, encouraging teamwork and learning, communicating openly, and fostering a strong sense of belonging.

This year that recognition goes to B&M Joinery, Cromwell - a business where culture is genuinely lived day-to-day, not just talked about. Staff are trusted to work flexibly around life, and that care is practical and proactive: paid time for counselling, mental health resources and wellbeing workshops, plus small but meaningful touches like winter health support, soup lunches and PJ Days dreamed up by the team themselves.

From entry-level models to higher-output systems, HOMAG’s 5-axis portfolio combines machining capability with woodWOP programming, nesting applications, storage integration and robotic handling.

A 5-axis CNC changes more than the shape of the part. It changes how the part moves through production. Operations that once needed several set-ups can often be completed in one cycle. Angled machining, profiling, trimming and routing can stay on the same machine, with less reclamping and less manual handling in between.

That has clear value in joinery, furniture, stair building and interior work, where components are rarely limited to flat and simple geometry. A front door may need machining on several faces. A stair part may combine angles, curves and precise detailing.

A shaped furniture component may need contour work, drilling and trimming in one process.

This is where 5-axis CNC earns its place. It allows more of that work to stay inside a machining cycle. The technical principle is straightforward. Along with movement in the X, Y & Z directions, the spindle can swivel and rotate. That allows the tool to approach the workpiece from different angles instead of only from above. The result is more machining freedom, but also a more efficient process. Fewer handling steps mean less time lost between operations and less risk of error from repositioning the part.

HOMAG’s 5-axis CNC range is built around exactly that logic.

It covers entry-level machines for joinery shops through to larger systems for demanding component manufacture and industrial production.

HOMAG structures its 5-axis range around two machine concepts. The CENTATEQ P Series is designed for flexible machining of individual parts such as joinery components, doors, stairs, solid timber parts and shaped components. The CENTATEQ N Series takes a different approach, bringing 5-axis capability into a nesting machine concept for panel-based production. Within both series, the range runs from entry-level machines through to larger systems for higher-output and more demanding applications.

Starting point CENTATEQ P-100 & P-110 The CENTATEQ P-100 and P-110 form the entry level of HOMAG’s P Series. These machines are aimed at customers looking for 5-axis capability in a smaller format and at a lower level than the larger machines in the lineup. That makes them relevant to joinery shops and smaller manufacturers handling detailed custom work, shaped components and more varied machining tasks.

A machine in this class is not there only for unusual parts. It also suits day-to-day work where angled drilling, contour routing, trimming or multi-face machining would otherwise require extra handling or secondary operations.

The P-100 is the newer and lowercost entry into the range. Its role is clear. It opens the door to 5-axis machining for customers who need the flexibility of a 5-axis machining head, but not the scale of a larger production centre. The

P-110 sits in a similar part of the market and remains a strong fit where compact 5-axis capability is the main priority.

The all-rounders CENTATEQ P-210 & P-310 The P-210 and P-310 sit further up the P Series and are better suited to workshops that need more processing scope. These are not entry-level machines. They are all-round platforms for customers combining a wider mix of work and a heavier machining load.

In practical terms, that can mean traditional furniture manufacture, solid timber processing and more demanding 3D milling on the same machine. This is where 5-axis capability becomes less about occasional specialist jobs and more about regular production flow. The machine is expected to move from routine routing and drilling to shaped work, angled features and more complex geometry without breaking the process into separate stages.

For workshops running varied work across joinery, furniture and interior components, that wider operating range becomes a major advantage.

Higher output P-510 & P-610 At the top end of the P Series are the CENTATEQ P-510 and P-610. These are the heavier-duty machines in HOMAG’s 5-axis line, intended for larger facilities and more demanding applications.

They are well suited to the production of front doors, stairs and structural timber components, where part size, machining complexity and cycle stability all become more important. In these applications, the machine needs to do more than provide access to angled machining. It also needs the rigidity, tool capacity and working range to carry a significant production load. The CENTATEQ P210 and P-310, the all-rounders capable of heavier workloads and wider workflow ranges.

This is where the larger P Series machines come into their own.

They are designed for operations where 5-axis machining sits at the centre of the process rather than on the edge of it.

Five-axis nesting N-510 and N-600 Alongside the P Series machines, HOMAG also offers 5-axis machining in a nesting format through the CENTATEQ N Series.

The N-510 and N-600 are built for panel-based production, where sheet efficiency and process speed remain central but more complex machining also needs to be brought into the same workflow.

That combination matters in cabinet work, modern kitchen production, interior fit-out and other applications built around MDF, plywood and similar panel materials. A standard nesting machine is highly effective for cabinet parts and rectangular components. The added value of a 5-axis spindle comes when the same machine also needs to handle angle cuts, shaped machining or more detailed routing directly on the nesting table.

This is often described in practical terms as an 80/20 split. Most of the work remains fast, efficient nesting. The smaller share of the workload uses the 5-axis spindle for the parts that sit outside a standard panel-processing cycle.

That approach allows a panel processor to keep more work on one machine rather than sending special parts into another operation.

Matching the machine to the work One of the strengths of HOMAG’s 5-axis offer is that it does not push every customer toward the same machine concept. The right choice depends on the material, the part geometry and the overall production method.

A machine from the P Series is better suited to clamped individual parts, solid timber components, doors, stairs and workpieces that need access from multiple sides.

A machine from the N Series makes more sense where fullsheet processing is the basis of production and nesting remains the most efficient route.

That is why the specification on its own never tells the whole story.

Two machines may both offer 5-axis capability, but they solve different production problems.

Programming with woodWOP woodWOP is an important part of HOMAG’s CNC concept.

It is the company’s standard programming software and is used across the machine range.

That gives customers a consistent programming environment, whether they are working with entry-level 5-axis machining or more advanced production set-ups.

This becomes even more important in 5-axis processing.

Angled operations, shaped parts, contour machining and multi-face components place higher demands on programming than standard

CNC work. The software needs to support that clearly and reliably in day-to-day production.

In practice, woodWOP helps define machining operations, adapt programmes and reuse proven processes. That makes programming more manageable and helps customers get the full benefit from the machine on the shop floor.

Automation around the CNC HOMAG also offers ways to integrate the CNC into a more automated production set-up.

One option is the connection to a horizontal storage system, allowing panels or components to be supplied to the machine in a more organised and efficient flow.

This can reduce manual handling and help keep production moving more consistently.

Another option is robotic handling. Robots can support loading, unloading or part transfer around the CNC, depending on the application. This helps reduce manual steps around the machine and can support a smoother production process.

An important point is that this does not have to happen all at once. Customers can start with the machine itself and then add storage or robotic support later, as requirements change. That gives the CNC a role within a broader production set-up rather than as an isolated machine.

When FMI began looking for a CNC machining centre, it needed a machine capable of machining the door face and producing mortice recesses for hardware on the edges.

The Felder Format4 profit H350 provides for current needs and future expansion.

Five axes, one smart investment Fairview Metal Industries (FMI) was established in Timaru in 1968. Just three months after opening, the factory was destroyed by fire. Despite that difficult beginning, the company rebuilt and has gone on to become one of New Zealand’s largest manufacturers of aluminium windows and doors, manufacturing the inputs for producing aluminium joinery.

Today, FMI operates from Mt Wellington, Auckland, producing aluminium joinery for residential and commercial applications.

Among its innovations are XPS entry doors, manufactured onsite using aluminium skins bonded to a high-performance foam core.

“Our XPS doors use our own unique capping design, which strengthens the door and helps us achieve an H1 thermal rating,” says FMI’s Chris Kostopoulos.

ultimately decided that a 5-axis CNC offered more flexibility,” Chris explains. “One priority was avoiding aggregates wherever possible. They require regular servicing and don’t give us the same flexibility as a spindle that can move in five directions. We also didn’t want to limit what the machine could do in the future.

Who knows what we might need it for in a few years? The 5-axis gives us more options.”

Manufacturing onsite allows FMI to produce custom sizes and cut hardware openings wherever required. The company stocks panel blanks to be able to produce its popular sizes and colours with an industry leading turnaround time, while custom orders can often be completed in less than a week.

FMI selected a Format4 profit H350, manufactured by Felder in Austria and supplied and supported by Jacks. “I was already familiar with Format4” says Chris.

“I knew the machines were well built and had confidence in them and the support that came with it.”

When FMI began looking for a CNC machining centre, it needed a machine capable of machining the door face and producing mortice recesses for hardware on the edges. “A 4-axis machine would have done the job, but we

The bumper-bar system has also proved valuable during everyday operations. When sizing doors, operators sometimes need to remove offcuts from the front of the machine. The system keeps this area accessible while protecting operators if the machine moves into their working space.

Many FMI doors are manufactured to custom dimensions and feature vertical grooves on the faces, making accurate pod positioning essential. “The pods need to sit on a flat surface and can’t overlap the grooves,” Chris explains. “If they do, the vacuum clamping can be compromised.”

The wide range of vacuum pods available for the Format4 CNC, combined with the Format-4 ‘lightPos’ positioning system, has simplified this process.

Using the machine’s software, operators can position the door graphically, identify the grooves and arrange the rails and pods to create the optimum clamping arrangement. Once the setup is established, lightPos uses a series

of illuminated indicators to show operators exactly where to move the rails and pods.“It’s a fantastic system and saves us a lot of setup time,” says Chris.

After almost three years of production, FMI is pleased with the CNC’s performance.“We’ve had a couple of minor issues, but nothing outside the ordinary for a sophisticated machine like this,” Chris says. “Jacks have been onsite very quickly and have resolved those issues without unnecessary delays.”

A 5-Axis revolution with Leitz NiRo When a machining application demands complex angles, long tool extensions and high levels of precision, the performance of the CNC machine is only part of the equation. The tooling interface plays an equally important role in achieving the required accuracy, surface finish and consistency.

When Gantiel Vensott Engineering Plastic Solutions invested in a new 5-axis Biesse CNC router, the company gained the capability to take on more complex machining applications. But to get the best from the new machine, the tooling interface also needed to deliver the required prevision and stability.

Working with Leitz Tooling Systems, Gantiel Vensott upgraded all 21 tool holders on the machine to the Leitz NiRo Collet Chuck Premium.

Stability and Precision Gantiel Vensott provides engineering and manufacturing solutions using high-grade thermoplastics, producing components including bushes, bearings, gears, guards and guides.

demands on the tooling system. “We needed better tooling interfaces for perfect finishes and longer tool life.”

Previous machining had sometimes resulted in vibration marks, material waste and applications that could not be undertaken effectively due to equipment and tooling limitations.

Leitz worked with Zacharopoulos to identify a solution, introducing the NiRo Collet Chuck Premium.

A more stable tooling interface The NiRo system combines high clamping forces and precision concentricity with a slim geometry, designed to support stable CNC machining.

For Gantiel Vensott, the benefits were particularly noticeable when machining with long, slender tools and undertaking complex 5-axis movements. The improved stability helped eliminate vibration marks in challenging operations such as slot cutting, while supporting consistent finish quality and longer tool life.

An interesting company using this technology is Windsor Industries in Pahiatua. A leading supplier of premium caskets to the funeral industry they are regarded as one of the top three such manufacturers in NZ with a specific reputation for their high end Solid Timber Range. “The use of technology has gone hand in hand with a culture of enablement that allows us to continually improve, react and respond to change whenever we need to.” says Frazer. “The casket business needs us to meet the changing tastes and demands of our clientele and also implement cost savings where possible to keep prices fair for the consumer.”

The use of sophisticated machinery in the manufacture of caskets of varying materials and styles has been around for some time now. Windsor Industries has been in operation for thirty plus years and have used two previous three axis CNC machines from Proform CNC Ltd (now part of Farnese NZ).

“Moving to a five axis machine was a natural progression for us and something I was working towards for a few years” explains Frazer “It was about maintaining our production efficiencies in a competitive industry but also allowing for continuous development of new designs,

materials and mouldings for the caskets to meet client’s wishes. It is our intention to remain leaders in innovating new and fresh designs.

Windsor’s casket production has risen from 3600 caskets per annum three years ago to its current number of 5500 plus per annum today, all the while managing to maintain their staff numbers at a consistent level of about seventeen team members. Frazer attributes this to a continuous mindset for improvement and machinery investment such as their new five axis CNC machine.

To gain the improvements the five axis technology offered, Windsor Industries moved to a Titan 1228 five axis flat bed CNC router from Farnese NZ. “This machine was the right size footprint and had the right improvements we needed in our factory.” Frazer comments. The Titan is a high quality CNC machining centre incorporating Italian technology with five controlled axis equipped with a matrix table adapted to

a variety of flexible working processes such as quick nesting and milling functions. It comes in multiple sizes to meet any work size requirements. In this case the table is 2800 by 1220mm to fit the factory space available. It has a powerful 6.5kW 40,000RPM spindle. A real feature is the custom linear tool changer with 25 tool changers. The programming is done from an Osai CNC Italian controller. The machine uses AlphaCam software and is only the third such five axis CNC machine in Australasia to be produced from this Farnese team.

For a company of its size with just seventeen staff the Titan has upped their game considerably.

Making the impossible possible For Duncan and Nadine

Waterson, the most rewarding projects are often the most challenging.

Turning ambitious storage ideas into reality is what the talented Waikato Wardrobes team do best.

The couple entered the industry six years ago after careers in the FMCG sector, where they learned the value of systems, workflow and efficiency. Duncan also brought practical manufacturing and construction experience: he’s a builder by trade. The combination of these skills have proved valuable in running a specialist wardrobe manufacturing business.

"We specialise in wardrobes. It's all we do," says Duncan. "We're not a kitchen manufacturer that also does wardrobes on the side.

Because wardrobes are our sole focus, we really understand what can be achieved."

When Duncan and Nadine took over the business, they inherited a Felder panel saw and an older European edgebander that relied on glue cartridges. Since

then, Waikato Wardrobes has doubled its turnover without increasing staff numbers, helped by investment in a KDT 6-sided CNC and KDT laser edgebander, supplied by Jacks.

"For wardrobes we need access to all six sides of a component," says Duncan. "A traditional nesting CNC wasn't the right fit because it can only access one face. With the KDT we can drill and rout all six sides, allowing us to prepare parts for hardware, fittings and assembly in a single process."

The impact has been significant.

"We had an employee who was an absolute genius. He could look at a complex wardrobe plan and manually produce it. Today the 6-sided CNC does that work automatically, so anyone in the workshop can do the same job. All they need to do is scan the barcode and place the part on the machine."

While the productivity gains are obvious, Duncan says accuracy has been the greatest benefit. "We used to make final alterations to components during installation.

Now parts arrive on-site ready to go and everything fits together perfectly."

The KDT laser edgebander has delivered equally impressive improvements. "It’s been an absolute game changer," says Duncan. The previous machine was notoriously difficult to run.

"Only Pablo, our Production Manager, could reliably operate it. You'd look at it the wrong way and it wouldn't work," he laughs. By comparison, the KDT is simple enough for the whole team to use. "As long as you can feed parts in straight and don't run out of tape, you're good to go."

According to Pablo, features such as the pneumatic pin and panel thickness protection system make it difficult to make mistakes, while the quality of the finished product has exceeded expectations.

"I honestly can't think of how we could improve on what the KDT is delivering," says Duncan.

"There's no glue line, the trimming quality is excellent and the corner rounding is perfect."

The benefits extend beyond quality. The old machine often required one or two hours of manual finishing work every day, glue changes complicated production scheduling and maintenance was time consuming.

"Now we simply change the tape roll and keep working. There's no glue to clean off rollers or tooling, and we've standardised our tape thickness so we don't need to adjust trimmer settings."

While laser edging tape comes at a premium, Duncan says the labour savings, reduced maintenance and improved consistency more than justify the investment.

Beyond the improvements in efficiency, quality and consistency, Duncan says the KDT edgebander has transformed daily life in the workshop. "The old machine was frustrating to use. It created stress and slowed people down," he says.

"The new technology has been a real morale boost."

Executed to perfection Gin Bar wins Supreme Award for SB Joinery This year’s winner is a spectacular Gin Bar from Scott Beales and his team at SB Joinery working out of their 500m2 factory in Pahiatua just south of Palmerston North. This project caught the eye of the judges who described it as “ very clearly executed to an excellent standard from floor to ceilings. The curves, attention to detail, and use of Sapele timber added to the understated luxury of the final result and truly showed a high level of skill. A true once in a career amazing project executed to perfection.” This project also won the Best Specialty Bar, Counter or Fitment Category.

The client wanted an elegant and timeless fit out that feels like it has always been there. As you enter you are immediately faced with the curve of the stunning full height cabinetry, which draws you into and creates a sense of comfort and enclosure. This curved timber cabinetry introduces a sense of softness and fluidity that transforms the space from purely functional to sculptural.

The use of Sapele timber enriched with stain and a high-quality clear finish adds to the sense of permanence and weight. The

joinery was crafted with precision, and its curves add an understated luxury to the space.

The entire space was conceived and executed as a complete piece of bespoke joinery. The layout of the tasting room bar references the original 1904 reception area for the dental clinic which along with a private residence for the surgeon, was the original purpose of the building.

original drawings by the buildings architects Crichton & McKay. Every surface within the room was carefully considered, resulting in a cohesive and immersive timber gin bar experience.

The bar is constructed from solid Sapele and matching veneer, finished in a high-gloss stain and durable polyurethane topcoat. The richness of the timber is enhanced by the reflective finish, creating depth and warmth throughout the space.

Key features include sweeping curved doors, custom wall paneling, and a circular ceiling timber frame incorporating an antique mirror insert. The ceiling detail in particular required extensive planning and precision, forming a striking focal point

within the room. The project demanded a significant investment of time and craftsmanship, with meticulous attention given to every element. Fine details such as the tiny slatted mirror features, a linoleum bar top insert, and an integrated stainless steel sink all contribute to the layered finish of the space. With exception of one the ‘pizza-shaped' ceiling segment, which was outsourced for machining, all joinery components were handcrafted in-house without the use of CNC technology.

This approach reflects the level of skill, patience, and dedication involved in delivering the final result. The completed gin bar showcases traditional craftsmanship, thoughtful design, and a seamless integration of materials - a space that is both functional and visually striking.

Showstopper The Premier Award this year comes from joinery and cabinetmaking firm Advanced Joinery 2024 Ltd based in Christchurch. This truly impressive kitchen has it all - best summed up by the judge’s comments.

“Wow! This kitchen has great presence with a beautiful combination of curves and angles difficult to achieve in a same project and a transition from stone to timber seamlessly achieved through the use of a solid round block bringing the elements together. While the beautiful cathedral ceilings added to the complexity of the project, the oak veneer panelling to the ceiling and accuracy in alignment of the grain and vertical end-to-end matching turned this kitchen into a showstopper.”

This project involved delivering a highly specified kitchen within a space defined by a 5.5 metre cathedral ceiling. The challenge lay in maintaining dimensional accuracy, and veneer consistency across significant vertical spans, where even minor inconsistencies would be amplified. Manufactured in European Oak mismatched planked timber veneer on 18mm MR moisture resistant MUF. Base units transitioned into full-height panel work, with matching panels extending upward to form a unified back wall. Veneer was laid vertically with sheets carefully selected by hand to ensure continuity of grain.

A central insert in brushed black aluminium, was integrated into the Oak veneer joinery to reach the full 5.5m cathedral junction.

Given the high-spec nature of the build, tolerances were exacting.

Drawer reveals, vertical alignment, and service integration were resolved at shop drawing stage to eliminate on-site adjustment.

Under bench drawers featured Blum Legrabox soft close hardware and overhead units were fitted with Blum Servo Drive HK flap systems to ensure smooth operation and functionality at height.

This project also won the Best Kitchen Over $50,000 category.

A defining feature is the island’s curved form. The radius was achieved by moulding flexible plywood over a purpose-built former, ensuring a consistent structural curve. Once stabilised, the European oak veneer was applied post-forming, with sheets sequenced to allow the grain to flow uninterrupted across the radius and into adjoining panels. Precise sheet selection ensured perfect grain continuity without visible junction breaks.

Every element demonstrates careful material management and joinery expertise creating a technically refined kitchen the clients can rely on and enjoy for many years to come.

Sink Specification - 6 things that matter A sink might be a relatively small part of a kitchen specification, but getting it right involves more than choosing a size and finish.

Configuration, installation method and material all matter, but so do practical considerations such as stock availability, lead times, freight and what happens when project requirements change.

1. Check local availability For projects working to fixed installation dates, knowing what is actually available matters. A sink specified months earlier can quickly become a problem if it comes with a lengthy lead time when the project is ready to install.

3. Factor freight into the project Freight is another consideration, particularly when supplying projects outside the main centres or managing multiple jobs across different locations. Knowing freight costs upfront makes it easier to price a job accurately and avoid unexpected costs later.

5. Consider lead times Even a small delay can have a knock-on effect when installation dates are fixed. Lead times are worth checking at the point of specification, particularly for less common configurations, finishes or specialist products. Choosing readily available products, and confirming stock before the job reaches installation, can help prevent the sink becoming the item that holds everything else up.

Consider the sink alongside tapware and cabinet hardware early in the specification process.

From finishing shop to full production Hamilton Laminates takes control Steve Harker brought more than 30 years of laminate benchtop manufacturing experience to Hamilton Laminates when he founded the business 13 years ago.

The model was simple: outsource the benchtop manufacturing and complete the finishing work in-house, including joins, bowl cutouts and waterfall-ends.

But a major milestone came five years ago with the acquisition of Benchtops by Design. The purchase significantly expanded Hamilton Laminates' customer base and team. As demand increased, Steve began looking at ways to take the business to the next level. "We reached the point where it made sense to bring the whole manufacturing process in-house," says Steve.

That investment became reality last year with the installation of a new KDT CNC and edgebander, both supplied by Jacks.

When selecting a CNC, Steve knew the machine needed to suit the demands of laminated benchtop production. "We chose a model with a dual-rotation

spindle, which is important when processing laminated benchtops.

We also went with a self-loading unit because benchtop blanks are heavy and awkward to handle.

"The automated loading system delivered immediate productivity gains. It's turned what would typically be a two-person job into a one-person operation. One person can independently load and run the CNC." Steve was also surprised by how much CNC technology has evolved. "I remember back in 1998 a similar CNC would have cost around $250,000. I'd spoken with others in the industry and knew roughly what European machines were worth. I can tell you I paid a lot less for our KDT and I’m really impressed with it."

Local support and the growing presence of KDT machinery in the region helped cement Steve's decision. "Most machinery is made in China these days, but having local support through Jacks was important for us. There’s already a lot of KDT machines in our area, so we knew we were getting equipment with a solid reputation and support nearby if we ever needed it."

The CNC has quickly become the centrepiece of the operation, running six to seven hours a day and playing a role in every benchtop. "It's become the bedrock of our manufacturing process. We use it to cut blanks before laminating and machine components ready for finishing," says Steve. While the CNC is heavily involved in day-to-day production, Steve points out that the machine is still only using a fraction of its potential capacity.

"These machines are built for serious production and can run two or three shifts a day in larger factories, so there's plenty of capacity as we continue to grow."

The new KDT edgebander has a similar impact. "John Walton from Jacks made a point that really stuck with me," says Steve. "He talked about the importance of machine weight, especially when you're processing benchtops rather than standard cabinetry."

That advice played a role in Hamilton Laminates choosing the fully automated KDT KE-706.

Weighing 2500kg, the machine can handle large, heavy benchtop components while maintaining a consistent high-quality finish.

Reliability and ease of use were also high on the priority list. "I'd always been told that only one person should operate an edgebander because every operator sets things up differently,” says Steve. “With the touch screen controls, we're not adjusting dials, and we've got several people in the team who can confidently run it.”

Hamilton Laminates is reaping the benefits of bringing production in house. "Specialising in laminated benchtops and focusing on doing them well has helped us grow” Steve explains.” Now that we can complete the entire process ourselves, we've got much better control over quality and can make sure we're delivering on time for our customers." With the right machinery, growing demand and capacity to spare, Hamilton Laminates is well positioned for its next stage of growth.

HOMAG Treff 2026 HOMAG Treff 2026 will put equal weight on machinery, software and discussion, with new Live-Talks giving visitors a closer look at how manufacturers are dealing with automation, labour pressure and changing production demands.

HOMAG Treff 2026 will take place from 22 to 25 September at the company’s Schopfloch and Holzbronn sites in Germany.

Over four days, HOMAG will bring together customers, prospective customers and industry representatives for an event focused on technology, practical insight and direct exchange. Under the theme Building connections: Discussing the future face-to-face, the event is intended to combine machinery, software and industry discussion in one setting.

For the first time, Live-Talks will be a central part of the programme.

These staged and moderated sessions will feature HOMAG experts, technology partners and customers, who will present their own solutions and share their experience with the audience. The talks will address issues many businesses are dealing with now, including further automation, the role of artificial intelligence in manufacturing and ways to maintain or lift output when skilled labour is hard to find. Alongside the machine presentations, the Live-Talks are intended to give visitors a clearer view of how these solutions work in practice.

Technology in action HOMAG will present a broad range of manufacturing solutions in operation at both locations.

The line-up ranges from compact systems for smaller workshops through to highly automated concepts for industrial batch size 1 production.

In cutting technology, HOMAG will show the new SAWTEQ S-190, combining proven cutting technology with simple operation and precise results. Hybrid robot saws will also be a focus, showing how automation can be made more accessible for small and mediumsized businesses. Cybersecurity & carpenter days Cybersecurity will also be part of the programme, as connected production systems place new security demands on manufacturers. In the CNC sector, the focus will be on processing centres for a wide range of applications.

When Artiture Joinery took delivery of their new HD511J edge bander from Hold Machinery Ltd, they expected a smooth installation. What they didn't expect was to be using it that same evening.

The Hold Machinery team arrived at the workshop on the North Shore early in the morning. The machine was unloaded and moved into position without disrupting the shop floor's daily workflow. By midday, the bolting and levelling were complete. By mid-afternoon, electrical connections and pneumatic lines were in place. By late afternoon, the calibration was finished and test pieces were running through. Later that night, Artiture's operators were running actual production jobs on it.

Safety in Joineries How do you get the best value for your dollar when you buy a dust extraction system to keep your business compliant?

Most business owners want to take H&S seriously: the benefits of a compliant well organized dust free workshop, with all staff actively engaged in the procedures to be followed, increases productivity, improves quality of finished products and results in healthier staff - not taking sick leave due to respiratory issues caused by the dusty environment they operate in.

True compliance can often be seen to be time consuming, (with endless updates of documentation for policy, procedures and hazard registers) and/or expensive!

Improving the work environment by investment in a new dust extraction system might conflict with wanted expenditure on new machines to improve productivity.

Earlier this year, Worksafe targeted wood manufacturers (which includes processors and joineries), in a drive to improve understanding of what is compliance, and, to guarantee workers were being kept safe.

Guidelines for implementing practical steps to improve were issued to hundreds of companies: highlighting that many businesses are still operating without effective controls in place to limit exposure to wood dust, as well as other noncompliances.

So whilst production may be a bit slower, it is a good time to assess your dust extraction, ready for when the market does improve.

But with financial restraints affecting most industries still, it is even more important to ensure that any purchase decision is the best offer available for your budget – and it’s not just the cheapest price that owners or their accountants should consider.

There are many specialist dust extraction companies making claims re airflows and unique design, it can be difficult to truly compare like with like when several quotes are sought. The most important factor to assess any dust filtration collector is to know its filter area rather than fan size which many will promote.

If the filter area is basically too

small for the dust load, a more powerful fan will make things worse with blocked bags or cartridges. Short filter media life is a sign of undersized dust collectors. Some units will run 10-15 years and longer with the original filter socks. Others will need replacing regularly if the filter was undersized probably offered at an attractive quoted price. The filter media will take time to block, weeks, maybe 3-6 months. But you have now paid for a system that won’t give you long lasting performance, and remaining as efficient as the day it was commissioned for the many years you expected. Cheapest is never the best!

Keep asking your supplier for the filter area that matches quoted product: until you get this information, it is impossible to compare all the other quotes!

Ask about the warranty, does this include the filter socks, and how often the supplier expects you to need to change these. If the answer is every year, the quote may not be as good as it looks!

Egmont Air keeps Hallmark’s new factory moving On the move Hallmark Group is New Zealand’s largest NZ-owned door manufacturer, with more than 30 years serving the architecture, design and construction industries.

When they built a new facility at Rangiora Business Park — set to become one of their key manufacturing hubs — they brought in Egmont Air to relocate their existing extraction equipment and design an upgraded dust extraction for the new site.

At the centre of the project was the MEC 15, Egmont Air ’s industrial dust extractor built for heavy-duty manufacturing environments. Units like it are designed for longevity — able to be decommissioned, relocated and recommissioned as a business grows or moves premises, which made it a natural fit for a project like this.

To support this, NKBA has developed two significant new industry resources: the Bathroom Spatial Design Guidelines and Bathroom Drawing Standards.

These practical documents provide clear guidance on bathroom planning, documentation and best practice, helping to improve consistency, communication and project outcomes across the industry.

Targeted checks highlight opportunities to lift safety in joinery sector

Before and after shots illustrate the difference working extraction systems and simple housekeeping can make.

A recent WorkSafe initiative has found many joinery businesses could benefit from improving how they manage machine safety, workplace health risks, and hazardous substances.

The insights come from proactive visits to more than 600 wood product manufacturing businesses between January and March this year, including over 100 joinery workshops, most of them small to medium-sized.

Managing the risks of exposure to wood dust was a consistent issue.

Among the businesses assessed, common gaps included poor housekeeping, limited training, and incorrect selection or use of personal protective equipment (PPE). Overall, 56% had PPErelated issues. “Exposure to wood dust can have serious long-term health effects,” says Valladares.

“Simple steps like choosing the right respirator and making sure it fits properly can make a big difference.”

Manufacturing remains one of Aotearoa New Zealand’s highest harm sectors. It accounts for the highest rate and number of injuries with more than a week off work, with around 200 injuries each year involving machinery. WorkSafe’s assessments focused on the critical risks most likely to cause serious harm: machine safety, exposure to wood dust, fumes and chemicals, and hazardous substances management. More than 85% of joinery businesses that were assessed by WorkSafe inspectors received guidance and practical support to strengthen their health and safety practices.

Hazardous substances management also stood out, with 60% of businesses needing improvement.

In many cases, basic information such as safety data sheets or inventories were missing. WorkSafe’s Hazardous Substances Principal Advisor Susan Collier says these gaps can leave workers exposed to both immediate and long-term harm. “The consequences of not properly managing hazardous substances can be immediate – people can be overwhelmed by toxic gases and burned by spills.

But what’s more common is that people may be exposed but they don’t feel the effects until many years later.”

Project lead Savio Valladares says the most common areas needing improvement were machine safety, hazardous substances management, and local exhaust ventilation. However, he emphasises that practical improvements are within reach. “Making work safer starts with the basics – good training and worker engagement, effective supervision, properly guarded and maintained machinery, and controlling dust and fumes.”

She says there are ways of working with these substances that ensure worker safety – and a good starting point is the safety data sheets which businesses can get from their suppliers. “We also have a Hazardous Substances Calculator available online. And if you input your data it’ll spit out a controls report specific to your business, to help with safe storage and management. It’s really useful and businesses don’t have to navigate this alone.”

That’s a sentiment that’s echoed

by Savio Valladares: “Our inspectors have a lot of knowledge and information available, which can help ensure workplaces are safer and better for everyone. Another thing that can really help is looking inside your business - good worker engagement can help identify and address some of these problems. It really is at the heart of what we do and can be a really valuable tool for businesses.”

From shutdown to turnaround an example of Worksafe intervention When WorkSafe inspector Mike McConnell arrived at a small joinery for a routine visit, the situation was serious. Dust coated almost every surface. Offcuts surrounded machinery, creating trip and fire risks. Dust extraction units were running but not connected.

“They were just sucking air,” he says.“Electrical risks were visible.

A worker was operating alone in the workshop, breathing in fine wood dust. It was the worst place I’d ever seen.”

Work couldn’t continue. A prohibition notice, a legal direction that stops work immediately when there’s serious risk of harm, was issued. For the owner, who asked to remain anonymous, it was confronting but fair. “I knew it had got too bad,” he says. “It needed to be cleaned up.”

What followed was a focused turnaround. With support from WorkSafe, the workshop closed for a week. The space was thoroughly cleaned, extraction systems repaired, electrical risks addressed, and housekeeping rebuilt.

Just as importantly, the focus shifted to worker health. The owner learned more about wood dust risks, arranged health monitoring, and made sure proper personal protective equipment was available. “I didn’t realise how much the evidence had changed over the years,” he says. “You’ve got to take it seriously now.”

The prohibition notice still hangs on the wall as a conversation starter.

“I’ve heard people dismiss WorkSafe and its inspectors in the past, but in my experience, they’ve provided really useful advice – they’re able to look at my workshop with a fresh set of eyes and point out risks that I don’t see.

“WorkSafe are welcome to come into my workshop – their advice could save my, or someone else’s, arm or a leg. Why would you want to avoid that ?”

For WorkSafe’s Mike McConnell the visit reinforces what the job is all about: “This was the best result, a huge improvement in health and safety without anyone having to suffer an injury first. Everyone worked together to ensure the business got back up and running as quickly as possible. It’s satisfying when we can work closely with others to help them identify and address hazards before someone gets hurt.”

alk to almost anyone in joinery, cabinetmaking or commercial fit-out at the moment and the conversation turns, sooner or later, to the same two words: time and capacity. Not enough of the first, never quite enough of the second.

It shows up differently depending on the work. In residential and boutique commercial joinery, it's the client or designer who wants an eight-week kitchen delivered in five. In larger commercial fit-outs, it's a head contractor's programme that assumes fabrication can simply compress to absorb someone else's delay upstream — a late consent, a design change, other trades, a landlord handover that slips.

Either way, the pressure lands in the same place: your workshop floor, your install crew, and your Monday morning schedule.

None of this is new. But it feels sharper right now, for a few reasons worth naming.

Why it's biting harder • Programmes are being set before design is locked. Shop drawing approval still takes weeks, but the install date doesn't move to match. There is a requirement for shop drawings much more often today.

• Commercial fit-out dates are often fixed by someone else's deadline — a store opening, a lease start, a hospitality launch — leaving joinery to absorb the schedule risk with none of the schedule control.

Too often the clients or main contractors programme is not realistic and has been designed to “fit” the timeline, not the real amount of effort required in days.

• Skilled labour is still tight, so the workshop that could once flex up to meet a spike often can't.

•

Everyone is quoting and accepting tighter lead times to win the work, which quietly transfers the risk from the sales conversation onto the production floor and to our industry.

The result is a familiar pattern: jobs queue up, WIP creeps higher than it should, and the business runs hot enough that one late delivery from a supplier or one sick day in the workshop turns a tight programme into a broken promise. We often react by putting more people on a job, resulting in the hours running over, variable quality and ultimately less profit.

The 80% rule still applies I've written before about the construction industry's danger zone — running at 80%+ of true capacity. It's worth repeating, because it's counterintuitive: a business booked out doesn't have more slack to absorb disruption, it has less. Queuing theory backs this up in every trade, not just ours — utilisation above roughly 80% is where lead times stop scaling in a straight line and start blowing out exponentially. The busier you are, the more a single hiccup costs you.

Practical moves for a tighttimeline market 1. Know your real capacity, not your hoped-for capacity.

Machine hours, bench hours and install crew hours are three different constraints — track them and measure them separately. A full order book on paper can still be running one of the three into the ground.

2. Quote lead time like it costs money — because it does. If a shorter programme means overtime, a subcontracted install crew, or bumping another client, price it in. A tight deadline is a service, not a favour. At least let your clients know your

overtime rates if you are forced to attempt to shorten the programme from what was originally agreed.

Push back on programme dates that were set without you. On commercial fit-outs, get shop drawing sign-off and site-readiness dates written into the programme, agree how many days or weeks you will allow together to get the shop drawings done and signed off, with your fabrication start date tied to them — not a fixed calendar date that ignores upstream delays.

Build a buffer into scheduling, not just into quoting. A production schedule with zero slack looks efficient until the first supplier delay or callback. One flexible slot a week absorbs more stress than any amount of overtime after the fact.

Say no on purpose, not by accident. Every job accepted without checking real capacity is a decision to let something else run late — a current client, your team's hours, or your own margin. Make that trade-off consciously, not by default.

Communicate early, not when it's already a problem.

A client or head contractor told about a risk three weeks out can usually work with it. Told three days out, it becomes a dispute.

The upside None of this is about turning work away for its own sake.

It's about recognising that in a market where everyone is under timeline pressure, the businesses that protect their capacity — and are upfront about what they can genuinely deliver — are the ones building the reputation that lets them charge properly and choose their clients. Being realistic isn't the cautious option here; it's the competitive one. 

At the 2026 Master Joiners Awards Dinner, the trophy was presented to Mark Pickford of HR Jones & Co Ltd, Feilding, recognising an exceptional 50-year career and his significant contribution to the New Zealand joinery industry.

Mark’s commitment to craftsmanship, leadership, and the next generation has left a lasting impact on both Master Joiners and the wider joinery industry.

Mark has also been a strong advocate for training and mentorship, supporting apprentices and workforce development through his involvement with JITO and sharing his knowledge generously with those around him.

STATE OF THE INDUSTRY Reports from Branch Presidents August 2026

AUCKLAND It's hard to believe we're already halfway through 2026. So far, this year has been challenging, with inconsistent workloads creating a highly competitive market and driving some extremely aggressive pricing.

The kitchen sector continues to experience a slower market, with low-to medium-value manufacturers feeling the strain most acutely. Many businesses are facing significant challenges in the current market, largely due to the continued decline in group housing developments.

With fewer large-scale projects available, order volumes have reduced, competition has intensified, and margins have become increasingly tight.

"Patchy" is once again the word I would use to describe the timber window and door sector. The pipeline of larger projects has largely dried up, with most businesses relying on a steady stream of smaller jobs to keep busy. While this has helped keep the industry moving, it has created a more hand-tomouth environment and lacks the efficiencies and certainty that come with larger, long-term projects.

Encouragingly, there has been an increase in the number of larger projects coming out for tender in recent weeks. While this is a positive sign for the future, these projects are unlikely to commence for another 12 to 18 months, meaning the industry will likely continue to face challenging trading conditions in the short term.

Unfortunately, we are once again seeing increases in the cost of both timber and hardware. Much of this is being driven by ongoing conflict in the Middle East, where higher oil prices have increased freight, manufacturing, and transportation costs, placing upward pressure on raw material prices around the world. As a result, manufacturers continue to face rising input costs, many of which are becoming increasingly difficult to absorb in an already highly competitive market.

Saying that it’s positive to hear from some suppliers that inquiries are on the rise across all joinery sectors, signalling a positive shift in demand.

This increase in interest, coupled with similar feedback from larger timber and hardware suppliers, suggests that the industry might be heading towards a more stable period. It’s encouraging to see these positive indicators after the challenges faced by various sectors, and hopefully, this trend continues to bring more opportunities and growth.

Rob Pickup Total Timba Joinery CANTERBURY Hello fellow joiners.The winter season is upon us which means we are over halfway through the year, and the books will be starting to fill for the year. A time when clients are sitting at home, stuck inside, so they start looking at what they can do around the home – maybe a new kitchen will be their next project, or maybe even a new walkin wardrobe. All we know is that this will create the next big push to Christmas, so be prepared as the rush won’t be far away, or possibly already begun.

Our monthly meeting is held at the Blum Showroom in Christchurch where a mix of joiners and suppliers come together. Dinner for those who wish to partake prior to the meeting for a social chat and food. The meetings start at 7pm sharp, generally with an average of 25 participants. Meetings tend to include but are not limited to H&S, general business, apprentices, workloads, tip and tricks, suppliers, guest speakers etc so if you have been on the fence and wonder what the meetings are all about, please do feel free to reach out and come along even if its just for a social chat. Meetings are the first Tuesday of each month except for January, November and December.

An action-packed day on the Friday with guest speakers filling our plates with a lot of information on legal, supplies, success stories, and the assembly, giving time for joiners to express their challenges, whether they be wins, losses, or concerns.

CENTRAL

The Friday night featured an entertaining quiz night, giving delegates the chance to unwind, enjoy some friendly competition, and strengthen connections in a relaxed atmosphere.

The Awards Night was a standout event located at the stunning winehouse alongside the Kawarau George. The guest speaker was fantastic and grabbed the audience making a lasting impression on attendees. A great band provided excellent music for everyone to get out there and show there moves!

Regarding the awards, the Canterbury region achieved an outstanding result by winning 13 awards in total. MWF led the way with an exceptional performance, taking out 7 of the 8 Apprentice Awards, highlighting the strength of its apprenticeship programme and the dedication of its talented apprentices and mentors.

A sincere thank you to our suppliers for their ongoing support and contribution to the conference. Your partnership plays an important role in the success of events like these, and your continued commitment to the joinery industry is greatly appreciated.

We also recently had the annual Canterbury Master Joiners quiz night, with 9 teams with a variety of knowledge from young and old. This evening was held at The Elmwood Trading Co and was a great success.

Graham Woodham Modern Age Kitchens & Joinery

It is time again to provide a snapshot of what is happening across the Central region. The market is showing cautious improvement, with commercial and industrial construction providing the strongest growth. In Palmerston North, non-residential building consent values increased by 55.8% over the previous year. Activity is being supported by logistics, warehousing, accommodation, healthcare, education and airportrelated developments.

Residential construction remains comparatively weak. New dwelling consent numbers across Manawatū were down 5.1% in the year to April, and the market continues to be highly competitive and price-sensitive. As a result, more businesses are directing resources towards renovation, refurbishment and maintenance work.

Workloads remain mixed. Some businesses are reporting healthy levels of work, while others continue to experience lower enquiry and order volumes. This variation may reflect the type of work each business is exposed to. The strongest near-term opportunities are likely to come from confirmed commercial projects, industrial facilities, hospitality, healthcare, education and refurbishment work.

On the social front, Master Joiners recently held its annual small-bore shooting event, with a strong turnout of more than 30 people. It was a great night, and it became clear that we have some keen shooters within the group—and a few who may ‘need a little more practice’. As current president, I also had the honour of joining Andrew Reilly, past president, and Allison Delainey, Chief Executive, in presenting Mark Pickford with the Owen Wright Memorial Trophy. It was a special occasion. Andrew spoke about his time as Mark’s apprentice at HR Jones, while Mark shared stories and reflected on the many roles he has held within the Master Joiners Federation over the years. Allison also spoke about Owen Wright— the man, the trophy and what they represent within Master Joiners.

Mark knew Owen personally, which made receiving the award even more significant. It was a privilege to recognise Mark’s contribution in this way.

Quotation lead times have extended modestly due to workload and material sourcing checks. There have been increasing pressure on quotes due to labour cost increases and selected material price volatility. Contractors are quoting more conservative contingency allowances for delays and supply risk. There has been greater preference for time-and-materials or staged pricing on larger/complex jobs to mitigate margin exposure.

Vaughn Tongs TweakIt Joinery Solutions WAIKATO – BAY OF PLENTY Overall, there is steady-to-strong activity across both regions driven by residential renovations, continued detached housing builds in growth corridors, and an uptick in commercial fit-outs (hospitality, light retail, education).

Membership growth and apprentice engagement indicate healthy sector renewal and sustained demand for qualified joinery trades.

Increased demand for bespoke kitchens, joinery for multi-unit developments, and engineered timber components for truss/frames.

Tauranga sees strong renovation and medium-density apartment work; Western Bay and Rotorua show steady regional housing and holidayhome projects. Seasonal tourismrelated refurbishments are adding short-term spikes in workload.

Skilled joiners and qualified CNC operators remain in short supply across both regions. Competition from construction trades and larger manufacturing operations is intense.

There are positive signs with increases in apprenticeship starts, especially in Waikato. However, completion rates and retention beyond qualification remain areas to monitor. Pressures have been seen around rising wages for experienced joiners and difficulty accessing

There has been growing adoption of offsite-manufactured panels and pre-fitted joinery to speed onsite assembly and reduce labour exposure. More small-to-medium shops are investing in mid-range CNC routers and software to boost repeatability and reduce lead times.

Clients and builders increasingly request joinery designed for efficient manufacture and installation (standardisation, reduced site finishing). There has been higher demand for low-VOC finishes, certified timber, and recyclable materials, driven by specifiers and homeowner preference.

Generally stable for common joinery materials, but intermittent shortages/delays for specific hardware, specialty timber profiles, and some imported fittings.

Shipping lead times can affect bespoke components. There has been increased interest in NZsourced and certified timbers to reduce import risk; building stronger relationships with regional suppliers.

Rising freight and distribution costs continue to be factored into quotes; bulk ordering and consolidated deliveries being used to control costs.

There has been an increase in new Master Joiners membership applications suggesting strong engagement, healthy business confidence, and effective local outreach. Apprenticeship enrolments are also increasing, and the branch networking and training uptake is high. There is demand for short upskilling courses (CNC programming, project estimating, business systems) across both regions.

The main risks remain ongoing labour shortages, sporadic supply chain disruptions for niche items, and margin squeeze from rising input costs. There is a potential risk of lower activity if interest rates or broader housing market weakens.

WAITAKI The year is just flying by, hard to think it is July already. Our members are seeing a varied workload with some very busy and some a bit quiet. A few aren’t seeing the plans in their areas, and some have plenty inquiry. Generally, there is a lot of building going on which will mean everyone’s workloads will increase.

Qualified staff are still hard to get, and companies are now looking at training in house with a few apprentices being taken on.

In general material supplies have been OK but a few sink bowl types and Laminate colours have been out of stock but there are plenty of alternatives to fill the gaps.

The surcharges on accounts are having to be absorbed by many, which means lower margin in an already competitive environment.

It’s interesting how these have been calculated by suppliers as some are a lot higher than others. We hope that these don’t become the new norm.

Customers are being a bit more careful with there spending and many seeking two or three quotes before committing to their projects.

Generally, people are paying on time.

With only five months left till Christmas I’m sure all our members will have good workloads leading into the busy time of the year.

Mark Mitchell Barrett Joinery WELLINGTON The year is racing by, and Christmas already seems to be looming on the horizon. The weather in Wellington, like much of New Zealand, has been particularly challenging over the past few months. We’ve had almost constant rain, along with several significant weather events that have brought flooding and widespread property damage. As a result, there has been a noticeable increase in insurance work, including flooddamaged kitchen replacements and the repair or replacement of sashes and doors torn out by high winds.

Unfortunately, we had to cancel our June meeting due to one of these weather events, which was disappointing. However, we have rescheduled it for later in July and look forward to catching up with our fellow legends then. Our next meeting will then be held in August, when we’ll head over to Carterton to tour the new ITI warehouse. It should be a great outing, and we’re hoping to see more of our Wairarapa members join us.

Workload across the Wellington region continues to be a mixed bag. I often feel like I’m writing the same thing in these reports some members are exceptionally busy, while others are extremely quiet. That’s simply the reality of the market at the moment. I speak with some businesses that have months of confirmed work ahead of them, while others have only one or two weeks booked. We can only hope that as we move through the remainder of 2026 and into 2027, we start to see some positive, sustained improvement in the market. Election years have traditionally slowed activity in Wellington, although there have been some encouraging building consent figures recently.

Hopefully, that’s an early sign that the market is beginning to turn.

Finding skilled joiners remains as difficult as ever - virtually impossible. I continue to encourage members to invest in training new people and growing their own teams from within. We currently have three apprentices, with a fourth joining us in the coming weeks. In our experience, training our own apprentices is the most reliable way to develop skilled tradespeople for the future.

Quoting activity remains consistently steady, with plenty of enquiries still coming through.

People clearly want work done, but many are taking the time to shop around for the best value in the current market. My view is that there is always work available, but the challenge is resisting the temptation to chase every job if it means competing solely on price.

Staying busy often leads to better opportunities through referrals and word of mouth, so finding the right balance is important.

At present, I’m not aware of any significant supply chain issues affecting our members. There has been discussion around suppliers reducing fuel levies now that petrol prices have eased somewhat. It’s encouraging to see some companies adjusting their fuel surcharges in line with market conditions, and it would be good to see more businesses follow suit.

A total of 153 projects in 33 countries were carried out by 2,004 employees. The results underscore the broad scope of the initiative: more than 900 trees planted, 22 liters of blood donated, and measurable savings of 1.8 tonnes of CO₂ emissions and 1.7 tonnes of waste exemplify the active contribution to environmental and resource protection. In addition, donations and financial contributions amounted to approximately €77,000.

Wood is emerging as a strategic material, aligned with decarbonization and sustainability goals, and increasingly present in industrialized construction systems.

New Industrial Construction area A new area at FIMMA + Maderalia will showcase the latest advances in technology, finishes, and materials for industrialized construction within an innovative exhibition space that will combine stands with demonstration and training areas. The Fair will host the live construction of an industrialized structure with plans to build a three-story building made of wood.

Feria Valencia and FIMMA + Maderalia take another step in the strategic positioning of the biennial with the launch of the first edition of the “Industrialized Construction Fair,” a new and distinct exhibition area that has its own identity while being fully integrated into the overall offering of FIMMA + Maderalia, which will hold its next edition from 1013 November in Valencia, Spain.

This is a space that responds to the transformation currently taking place in the building sector, where concepts such as sustainability, productive efficiency, waste reduction, and the industrialization of processes are shaping the future of construction. In fact, the “Industrialized Construction Fair” will take advantage of the strong synergies with the traditional sectors of FIMMA + Maderalia, especially in areas such as technology, machinery and the promotion of wood construction.

The objective is clear: to expand the scope of FIMMA + Maderalia to meet these new demands, integrating solutions that directly connect with its DNA: technological innovation applied to materials, advanced production processes, and the valorization of wood as a key element in the construction of the future.

An exhibition ecosystem with machinery, technology, and wood The new fair will feature a selection of exhibitors showcasing their latest innovations in machinery, process technology, structural wood, and industrialized construction components. This will create a unique environment where industrialized construction is directly connected to the sector’s production capacity, from the transformation of structural wood to component manufacturing, including process automation and industry digitalization.

An experiential space within the major sector showcase The Industrialized Construction Fair will also bring a strong experiential component to the overall event. Among the planned initiatives are the live construction of an industrialized structure and the erection of a three-story building, integrating real solutions and applied technology from exhibiting companies at the event.

This will be complemented by a comprehensive program of technical sessions, presentations, and live demonstrations, reinforcing the value of FIMMA + Maderalia as a platform for knowledge, training, and business generation.

A meeting point for the entire value chain This new space is aimed at all professional profiles already part of the FIMMA + Maderalia ecosystem—industry, specifiers, and the contract channel— while also incorporating new stakeholders such as developers, construction companies, technical carpentry firms, renovation companies, engineering firms, and public administrations interested in the industrialization of building.

Manufacturing’s automation moment is here – now comes the workforce challenge You lock up your warehouse at night, switch off the lights and press play on an autonomous drone. By morning, it has flown the aisles, scanned barcodes, completed stocktakes and delivered real-time inventory data before the first staff member arrives. For some manufacturers, that future isn’t coming - it’s already here.

Having recently attended the MAKE NZ industry conference at the engineering and manufacturing show EMEX - alongside spending the past few months visiting manufacturing sites across New Zealand - I’ve had a frontrow seat to how quickly technology is evolving. From collaborative robots (co-bots) on factory floors to increasingly sophisticated AI and automated systems in warehousing and distribution, one message came through consistently: the biggest shift isn’t machines replacing people. It’s that the people alongside those machines now need different skills.

There is still a persistent narrative that technology equals job losses. But across manufacturing floors, warehouses and engineering workshops, the reality looks different. Across many manufacturing environments, technology is changing jobs faster than it is removing them.

Take robotic welding. A robot may handle repetitive work, but it still needs someone who understands welding quality, tolerances, and outcomes. Visit a distribution centre, and you’ll see technology moving stock, but humans still analysing outputs, monitoring systems and solving problems when things go wrong.

pallets and shrink-wrap them. Impressive? Absolutely. Faster than the person standing next to it? Not even close. The lesson is simple: technology still needs people.

Technology is not a procurement decision - it’s a workforce project The strongest manufacturing investments happen when conversations about technology and workforce capability start early.

If new technology, robotics or AI-enabled systems are on your roadmap, ask now: who will operate it? Who will maintain it? Who will monitor outputs and manage exceptions? What new skills will supervisors need?

This is where workforce planning becomes more valuable than talking about training alone.Bringing workforce partners into technology planning conversations before equipment arrives creates opportunities to build capability early - whether that is through structured on-the-job learning, targeted microcredentials or broader workforce development.

When done well, technology and workforce investment should happen side by side.

across supply chains. In some cases, modern production systems are becoming less of a competitive advantage and more of a requirement to stay in the game.

That means the workforce needs to evolve too. One concept gaining attention is reverse mentoring, where younger workers support experienced teams with digital capability while learning operational expertise in return.

Importantly, these new subjects won’t be developed in isolation.

The Manufacturing and Engineering ISB will work alongside employers, educators and schools to help shape pathways that reflect real workforce demand - ensuring young people are developing capabilities that match the jobs, technologies and workplaces they are likely to enter.

We know skills are becoming more transferable too. The capabilities needed to oversee modern production systems, interpret data, troubleshoot systems, and lead teams are no longer confined to a single sector. They move across manufacturing, engineering, logistics and beyond.

For people leaders, this creates both a challenge and an opportunity. People are more likely to stay where they can see a future for themselves. Building clear development pathways around emerging technology isn’t just about capability - it’s increasingly about retention.

The first rung on the career ladder is changing Perhaps the biggest shift is happening right at the workforce entry point. Historically, many workers entered manufacturing through repetitive, manual or productionline roles. But what happens when technology increasingly absorbs those tasks?

The first job may no longer be loading boxes or manually checking inventory. It could involve monitoring systems, quality assurance, interpreting machine data or overseeing AI-enabled systems.

That raises a bigger question: are we preparing young people for those jobs? This creates a genuine opportunity for industry, schools and workforce partners to rethink what work-ready means. Last month’s Budget announcements allocated $15 million for Industry Skills Boards (ISBs) to develop at least eight new industry-led sec-

We need stronger digital capability, systems thinking, problemsolving skills and transferable capability that moves across sectors. Because tomorrow’s workforce may need to understand AI-enabled systems, data and quality processes before they ever step onto the factory floor. Now the challenge - and opportunity - is making sure those new pathways reflect where manufacturing is heading, not where it has been.

Workforce planning matters at every size Technology-driven change is already reshaping manufacturing. The businesses that thrive won’t necessarily be those with the newest or biggest technology investments - they’ll be the ones planning their workforce around the changes ahead. For large manufacturers, that may mean significant investment in new systems. For smaller businesses, it may simply mean asking different questions earlier, building capability gradually and preparing people for what comes next.

Because the future of manufacturing won’t be built by technology alone. It will be built by people who know how to work alongside it.
