GCM: A Window ON MaLLorca Mallorca is changing. Our island is about to take a necessary leap in quality in order to improve the increasingly diverse range of options available to tourists, to gain visibility and strengthen our position in the international market and to secure our status as a modern, attractive, and competitive destination.

GCM, the new magazine released by the Grupo Cursach, is born with the mission of being a witness to that change, a window to a Mallorca full of meaning and sensations. A sustainable Mallorca beautiful in every way, committed to preserving our natural virtues and history but also to our ability to innovate and tackle new business opportunities.

Above all, GCM will be a fun, upbeat publication characterised by personality, quality and the desire to convey optimism and joy to its readers and advertisers… because when you live in Mallorca, you can’t help but feel these things. That is our sole intention.

Mallorca is also going through another big change in its tourism industry –perhaps one of the biggest in history– destined to make us one of the top exclusive holiday destinations of the 21st century. At the Grupo Cursach, we are facing this change by embracing a vertical, qualitative growth that has already put us in a modest yet solid position in accommodation among the segment that is our specialty: young travellers. The hotel BH Mallorca in Magaluf is a clear example of our commitment to doing things well: an innovative project that has stood out on international lists

of recommended hotels to stay this summer even before it opened. The prestigious newspaper The Sunday Times even included it on its top 100 list (number 16) of places to stay this season.

It’s not a question of abandoning the history of mature destinations, but of making the most out of it to change their reputation – the attitude of those who fill it each summer — and improving what it offers its visitors. This means taking the path of quality that we all demand… and at a good price. It will be slow-going, but we have to take a firm step in that direction.

Those who don’t will miss out on the attractive, thriving Mallorca that can be seen behind certain decadent places.

All this has led the Grupo Cursach to develop a new brand architecture divided into various lines of business (Cursach Entertainment, Cursach Wellness, Cursach Restaurants and Cursach Hotels) and a new corporate identity to reflect this renewed vision of the future, in keeping with the times: simplicity, good taste, a strong presence, friendliness, and a sense of inclusiveness. The Grupo Cursach Ocio is now the Grupo Cursach, having dropped the “Ocio” (leisure) to segment it into the concepts of each of its business divisions: entertainment, wellness, restaurants and hotels, reflecting the company’s desire to offer increasingly specialised services.

Nuestra isla afronta un salto necesario hacia la calidad, en una oferta de diversidad creciente, para ganar visibilidad y posicionamiento en el mercado turístico internacional y consolidarse como destino moderno, atractivo y competitivo.

GCM, la nueva revista editada por Grupo Cursach, sale al mercado con vocación de ser testigo de este cambio, una ventana abierta hacia la Mallorca con sentido y sentimiento, una Mallorca sostenible y guapa en todos los aspectos, hacia esa Mallorca emergente que apuesta por el respeto, por nuestras virtudes naturales y nuestra historia pero también, por nuestra capacidad de innovar y emprender.

GCM será un producto editorial sobre todo ameno y divertido, con carácter, de gran calidad y ganas de trasladar a sus lectores y anunciantes optimismo y felicidad, porque vivir en Mallorca no puede generar otros sentimientos. Esta y no otra es nuestra intención.

Mallorca transita otro de los grandes cambios en la historia de nuestra industria turística, tal vez uno de los más importantes, que nos debe posicionar entre la oferta vacacional de élite del

siglo XXI. Por nuestra parte, lo hacemos evolucionando hacia un crecimiento vertical cualitativo que, de momento, nos ha situado en un lugar modesto pero sólido del alojamiento en el segmento del que somos expertos: el turismo joven. El caso del hotel BH Mallorca de Magaluf es un ejemplo visible de nuestra voluntad de hacer la cosas bien: un proyecto innovador entre la oferta turística que ya antes de nacer destacaba en las listas de recomendaciones internacionales como una buena opción para las vacaciones de este verano. De hecho, el prestigioso The Sunday Times lo incluyó en niveles privilegiados de su top 100 (el puesto 16º) de lugares adonde viajar esta temporada.

No se trata de tirar por la borda la historia de los destinos maduros, sino de aprovecharla para ir cambiando su reputación -la actitud de quienes lo abarrotan cada veranomejorando la oferta, en la senda de esa calidad que todos reclamamos y con ello, los precios. El camino es lento, pero ha de andarse con paso firme. Quien no se sume quedará descolgado de esta Mallorca atractiva y floreciente que asoma detrás de la decadencia de algunos lugares.

The way we have built up the business from a small team to what we have now. The satisfaction of making people happy.

We have people from all over the world here, we see a lot of Europeans: Spanish, British and Scandinavian.

What are you looking forward to for this summer?

The season is looking very good for Mallorca. Summertime is my busiest period, I am here every day with my team.

Where do you like to go out when you have the time?

My favourite places to go out are Pacha and Garitos.

Describe your perfect day in Mallorca?

Sail to Cabrera and stay overnight anchored off the shore.

It’s a very special place, peaceful. There’s no light pollution there and the sky at night is stunning.

Reflexivo, trabajador, feliz. ¿Qué es lo que más te gusta de tu trabajo?

La manera en que la empresa ha evolucionado desde el pequeño equipo que éramos en un principio hasta lo que tenemos ahora. La satisfacción de hacer a la gente feliz. ¡Y me encantan las vistas! ¿Qué tipo de clientes visitan vuestro balneario?

Tenemos clientes de todo el mundo pero sobre todo europeos: españoles, británicos y escandinavos. ¿Qué esperas del verano?

La temporada promete mucho en Mallorca. El verano es el periodo más ajetreado. Me pasaré los días aquí, junto a mi equipo, sin faltar uno. ¿Por dónde te gusta salir en tu tiempo libre?

Mis locales preferidos son Pachá y Garito. ¿Cómo sería tu día perfecto en Mallorca?

Navegaría a Cabrera y pasaría la noche anclado en una cala. Es un lugar muy especial, muy tranquilo. No hay contaminación lumínica y el cielo nocturno es increíble.

The satisfaction of sharing creative moments with fellow artists and the audience.

What are you looking forward to for summer 2015?

To continually discover new ideas through my choreography and productions which will create an emotional response in our audience; and to show to my two little daughters the beauty of the world.

What kind of music do you enjoy listening to?

I listen to a mixture of music; it depends on my emotional state on what I need to bring me back into a balance.

What inspires you?

Nature, my family, dancing.

The “non city stress”: the sun, sea, wind.

Brad: Showing unsuspecting divers how damn awesome Mallorca is underwater.

Bea: The variety and richness of its environment, the weather, the picturesque villages in the mountains, the multi-cultural population that lives here.

Brad: The future is green; a green economy is a sustainable economy.

Brad: Going for a dive, followed by lunch and drinks with friends and family at a quiet beach.

What inspires you?

The places I’m in: nature and the outdoors. Love, light, darkness and the elements. Canada was a super inspiring place to grow up but Mallorca offers the beauty of the sea and vast mountains. ¿Qué tipo de música te gusta?

Jazz and blues, also deep house, and house music particularly with saxophone is sooo wonderful. I’m not too keen on going to clubs but I do like a good beach bar in the evening.

What would be your “perfect day” in Mallorca?

An early morning with my assistant, Toulouse Lautrec, and depending on the weather, winter or summer, head up to the mountains for a nice walk, or the north shore waves for body boarding. Toulouse would ride on his own board; he’s sponsored by Rip Curl.

Successful people, or should I say successful women!

What does the future hold for Mallorca?

It gets better every year. With its brilliant connection to the rest of Europe I feel I am living in the middle of it all.

Perfect day?

Walk up to the Castillo de Alaro: be there in time for sunset, spend the night, get up at sunrise, walk down and eat at Es Verger, then finish the day at Cappuccinos in Port Andratx for the sunset.

Crear cosas con fundamento, tanto desde el punto de vista histórico como tradicional, a partir de ingredientes naturales y sencillos. ¿Cuáles son tus tres productos de belleza básicos?

Un exfoliante facial suave que también sea limpiador, una crema hidratante con aceite esencial de rosas y pintalabios rojo. ¿Qué te inspira?

La gente que triunfa. O, mejor dicho, ¡las mujeres que triunfan! ¿Qué nos reserva el futuro en Mallorca?

How did you start DJing?

I’ve been fascinated with music since I first went to Ibiza when I was 14. I love funk, house and soul, anything with a groove.

What do you love about your work?

Making people happy. I put a lot of energy in and I get a lot back.

What inspires you?

People. I don’t have a “hero DJ” but I really appreciate Carl Cox, he’s a mega star and he’s the same guy he ever was.

What DJs should we look out for this summer?

A Swedish guy, Jonas Rathsman, “Wolfsbane”, and Enzo Siffredi, “Sometimes”, and my stuff, claro!

What do you love about Mallorca?

The variety: the mountains, the sea.

What are you looking forward to for 2015?

Spending time with my gorgeous wife, working on my music.

La música me ha fascinado desde que viajé por primera vez a Ibiza, a los catorce años. Me encantan el funk, el house y el soul, cualquier cosa que tenga groove. ¿Qué es lo que más te gusta de tu trabajo?

Hacer a la gente feliz. Pongo mucha energía por mi parte y recibo muchas cosas de vuelta. ¿Qué es lo que te inspira?

La gente. No idolatro a ningún DJ pero me gusta mucho Carl Cox, es una superestrella pero eso no le ha cambiado nada. ¿A qué DJs deberíamos escuchar este verano?

A un tipo sueco que se llama Jonas Rathsman, sobre todo un tema llamado «Wolfsbane», y al italiano Enzo Siffredi, con «Sometimes». ¿Qué es lo que más te gusta de Mallorca?

What kind of client seeks a personal trainer?

The range of possibilities has widened due to the people we’ve got on our team, but most of them are interested in preventative health and wellness.

What we’re interested in is preventing posture problems, movement readaptation… in short, health.

What qualities should a personal trainer have?

Training, experience and an understanding of psychology, because you have to connect with the client on a personal level to get them to meet their goals.

What are your clients’ obsessions?

EXERCISES / EJERCICIOS 1. Firmer buttocks / Glúteos firmes Hip extension exercise for the buttocks, which works the gluteus maximus. In general, they want to have great abs in no time –you know, that false myth that if you do a lot of sit-ups you’ll have a six-pack– so we have to explain the workout system to them.

Do the objectives change depending on the sex of the client?

Women usually want to tone their bodies, lose weight, and get firm legs and buttocks. The men usually want to have bigger muscles. Although it all depends, since we all have a different vision of ourselves at each moment of our lives.

How long does the average workout last?

People generally train an average of two days a week for one hour each day,

plus some warm-up exercises.

What happens when a client meets his or her objectives?

Once they do, there are some who, when they see the results, keep on working out. When they get stuck or it’s not going well, they start to find reasons to quit.

What’s your method?

I’m kind of radical. First of all, we should differentiate external results from health. Here we sell health, and we must value risks and potential benefits. I try to avoid pushing it so much that it means a risk of getting injured. My goal as a trainer is not for someone to be able to show off a great body at the beach on Saturday, but for them to be able to tie their shoes when they’re seventy and live a normal life without any problems. The idea is to train hard, but to be smart about it.

Without a personal trainer, can you get an equally good workout?

People get a bad workout because they don’t know what they’re doing.

Working with a trainer is more efficient, which means you see earlier, and longer-lasting results.

El abanico de posibilidades se ha ampliado por la cantidad de gente que tenemos, pero el perfil que más destaca es el orientado hacia la prevención de la salud, hacia el wellness. Lo que aquí nos ocupa es la prevención de problemas posturales, la readaptación motriz, la salud en definitiva. ¿Qué debe tener un entrenador personal?

El entrenador personal debe tener formación, experiencia y una gran psicología, porque entras en el plano personal para que esa persona cumpla sus objetivos deportivos.

¿Cuáles son las obsesiones de los clientes?

Generalmente quieren tener la tableta de abdominales en poco tiempo, según ese falso mito de que si haces muchos ejercicios de abdominales vas a conseguirla, así que tenemos que explicarles el sistema de entrenamiento. ¿Cambian los objetivos dependiendo del género?

Las chicas suelen pedir tonificar, perder peso, poner las piernas duras y los glúteos firmes. Los chicos quieren estar más musculados. Aunque todo depende, ya que cada persona en cada momento de la vida tiene diferentes visiones de sí misma. ¿Cuál es el promedio de entrenamiento?

La gente entrena un promedio de dos días, una hora cada día, además de algunos ejercicios de calentamiento. ¿Qué ocurre cuando un cliente consigue sus objetivos?

Una vez que se consiguen, hay quien, al ver resultados continúa en el proceso de entrenamiento. Cuando algo se estanca o no va bien, comienza a haber motivos para dejar de entrenar. ¿Cuál es su método?

Soy un poco radical. Antes que nada, debemos diferenciar el rendimiento de la salud. Aquí vendemos salud, y todo lo que implica intensidad, tenemos que valorar su riesgo y beneficio potencial. Procuro evitar hacer grandísimos esfuerzos para un resultado que implique arriesgarse a tener lesiones. Mi objetivo como entrenador no es que alguien luzca tipo el sábado en la playa, sino que a los setenta años pueda atarse los cordones y vivir su vida cotidiana sin problemas. Queremos entrenar fuerte pero con cabeza.

Sin entrenador personal, ¿se entrena peor?

El hecho de trabajar junto a un entrenador supone ganar eficiencia, que se traduce en resultados más tempranos y duraderos.

How lucky are you to be here on our beautiful island reading this? Our society encourages lack and fear.

Gratitude has the immense power to reverse these feelings. How great is it to trust life and know that you are enough, have done enough and have enough? Phew, what a relief!

What do you really love doing? What are your wildest dreams? What do you want to see and live in this lifetime.

My philosophy is that food should be served in its most natural state and prepared at a temperature lower than 46° to preserve its nutrients. You can nurture your body to optimum health with a fresh, organic plant-based foods diet packed with vitamins, minerals, enzymes, and antioxidants.

But it’s simpler to include raw food in your diet than you think.

1) For breakfast try a green smoothie: add dark leafy greens (kale, spinach, swiss chard) to a blender, with fresh fruit (apple, pear, orange, banana) and spirulina (a protein-rich algae).

2) Make a salad for lunch, add some colourful veggies, nutritious sprouts and hazelnuts or seeds for texture.

Drizzle Mallorcan extra virgin olive oil and sprinkle a little Himalayan salt.

3) For a snack pack a fruit salad: try

cubing mango and papaya with a generous squeeze of lime with chilli flakes. That hot chilli, sweet, and sour lime combo is amazing.

Make sure you pass by the Cathedral which is a majestic space of beauty; one of its chapels has been decorated by the artist Miquel Barceló. Go to La Caja Blanca which is another gallery nestled in the old city’s cobble stoned streets, metres away from Galeria Pelaires (they represent Rebecca Horn) and Galería Kewenig (artists like Christian Boltanski and Jannis Kounellis are among their roster). Steven Angello Josefsson Fragogiannis, better know to global dance music fans as Steve Angello, was born in Athens, Greece in 1982. He began DJing when he was just 12-years old, blending broken hip-hop beats with obscure 70s disco classics. Moving to Sweden, Angello started exploring the club scene in Stockholm with his friends Axel Christofer Hedfors (Axwell) and Sebastian Ingrosso, and later started producing his own tracks. After a wave of productions and remixes caught the attention of Beatport users, Angello suddenly became headline material. But it wasn’t until 2008, when he, Axwell and Ingrosso got together to create the electronic super-group the Swedish House Mafia, that Angello was able to start redefining the contours of the rave scene

long with artists such as David Guetta and later Avicii, it was the Swedish House Mafia who helped to persuade stadiumsized audiences to start engaging EDM. Two years later and dance music was conquering the mainstream charts across Europe and the US. The Swedish House Mafia were the future of dance music and over the course of the next few years they evolved dance culture beyond recognition.

After the Swedes split in 2013, Angello immediately started performing again as a solo artist. Today, his profile has never been so immense, and his new album Wild Youth, released on his own Size Records imprint, is a gigantic testament to Angello’s determination to keep evolving his sonic output.

With Steve Angello set to perform at BH Mallorca throughout July, we caught up with the Size Records boss to ask him about his experience with the Swedes and what we can expect to hear from him on the dancefloor this summer.

You were already a massive solo artist before the creation of the Swedish House Mafia – musically and philosophically why was SHM born?

We were a bunch of guys having a good time who felt like playing together once in a while, we never really planned it.

There was never any thought behind it, just heart.

SHM was all about setting trends and pushing boundaries – creatively, do you think the dance scene has stagnated a little since you guys split up?

It’s not because of us, but it has stagnated a little bit. I think it’s just become too easy making money just doing the same thing every day. Since EDM is such a fresh and exciting genre to new fans there is a lack of expectation from the fans which makes it easy for the artists to pan towards what already works. It’s a shame, but the strong will survive and when we do hit the peak the rest will fall off the map like any other genre of music!

Please tell us about your work at Size – are you a hands-on label boss?

I’m super hands on with everything. It’s my way or the highway! No, but seriously, I really am a very hands on

Éramos un grupo de colegas con ganas de pasarlo bien y de pinchar juntos de vez en cuando. En realidad no fue algo planeado. No hubo mucha reflexión detrás del proyecto, solo corazón.

SHM marcó modas y rompió moldes. Creativamente, ¿crees que la escena del dance se ha estancado un poco desde que os separasteis?

No es por nosotros, pero sí, quizá se haya estancado un poco. Creo que ahora es demasiado fácil ganar dinero

When you sign a producer to Size are you looking to create a quick buck or are you more interested in building an artist?

It is never, ever about the money! I have passed on loads of massive guys that would generate me millions, but it’s not only about money. It’s about something more than success; it’s about family. Creating things we can be proud of, even though it may or may not be successful.

Please tell us about your new album Wild Youth – weren’t you tempted to go down the EDM-pop route like everyone else?

Absolutely not – I’m making music. Wild Youth is an album full of all kinds of sounds and vibes. It’s fun and it’s exciting. And it’s also dark. It hasn’t been specifically programmed for the radio or for success. It’s just the music I enjoy making.

Is it true you bought yourself out of a deal with Sony to release the album – and if so, what were the reasons behind making such a courageous decision?

I like to have creative control. I like to see myself being able to make my own decisions after so many years in the business. I’ll do my own thing and I’ll do it my way!

These days, do artists produce dance music albums merely as a way of marketing live performance events?

It really depends on how you see it. I wanted to make a piece of art – a piece of history in my own chapter, regardless. If it helps the marketing of the shows, then great. But that’s never the idea or purpose.

We’re looking forward to your Size parties in Mallorca – how is a Steve Angello performance at BH Mallorca going to make us feel?

I’m going to have a lot of fun! And hopefully I can make you have as much fun as me!

Do you think Mallorca will ever be able to compete with Ibiza as a dance music Mecca?

It’s like comparing London and Paris. They are two completely different things and places. I feel like the crowds in Mallorca are more open to new music compared to what the last couple of years have done to Ibiza.

Háblanos de vuestro nuevo álbum, Wild Youth. ¿No estuvisteis tentados de seguir el camino de la EDM y el pop, como todo el mundo?

En absoluto. Yo hago música. Wild Youth es un álbum lleno de todo tipo de sonidos y vibras. Es divertido y emocionante. También es oscuro. No está pensado para la radio ni para ser un número uno. Es la música que me gusta hacer, nada más. ¿Es cierto que rechazaste sacar el álbum con Sony? Si es así, ¿cuáles son las razones por las cuales tomaste una decisión tan valiente?

Me gusta tener el control creativo. Me gusta verme siendo capaz de tomar mis propias decisiones después de tantos años en el negocio. Quiero hacer lo que me dé la gana y hacerlo a mi manera. ¿Se producen hoy día álbumes de dance solo para hacer marketing de determinados eventos en directo?

En realidad, depende de cómo lo veas. Yo quiero hacer una obra de arte. Una obra de arte para mí, al menos. Si ayuda al marketing de los espectáculos, mejor que mejor. Pero, por supuesto, ese no es nunca el objetivo.

Estamos deseando vivir las fiestas de Size Records en Mallorca. ¿Cómo nos van a hacer sentir las sesiones de Steve Angello en BH Mallorca? ¡Me lo voy a pasar muy bien! Y espero que vosotros os lo paséis igual de bien que yo. ¿Crees que Mallorca podrá competir algún día con Ibiza como la meca del dance?

Es como comparar Londres y París. Son dos lugares completamente distintos. Me da la sensación que el público en Mallorca está más abierto a nuevas músicas en comparación con lo que han sido los últimos dos años en Ibiza.

What do you think about the new BH Mallorca concept?

I think is a great place for all those young tourists who are coming to the island. In one location, you have a huge hotel with the most popular mainstream dance music artists, an aquatic park with crazy slides, and also a beach club for more chilled-out moments.

Where are the best clubs in Mallorca and are there any secret dance music venues we should know about?

In my opinion, the best clubs are Garito Café, Pacha Mallorca, and Miama Beach Club.

Will Mallorca ever be able to compete with Ibiza as a dance music mecca?

What is happening in Ibiza is too much; it’s like an overdose of everything: DJs, tourists, drugs.

Mallorca can compete with that, but somehow I’m happy that I live here. I wouldn’t like to see what is happening in Ibiza happen in Mallorca during the summer. In Mallorca, you can have a good time, but you don’t have the feeling of living in a very touristy island.

Creo que es un gran establecimiento para los turistas jóvenes que vienen a la isla. En un mismo lugar tienen un hotel enorme en el que pinchan los DJs de dance más conocidos, un parque acuático con toboganes que son una locura y un beach club para los momentos de relax. ¿Cuáles son las mejores discotecas de Mallorca? ¿Hay algún club secreto que deberíamos conocer?

En mi opinión, los mejores son Garito Café, Pachá Mallorca y Miama Beach Club. ¿Será Mallorca capaz de competir con Ibiza como meca del dance?

Lo que ocurre en Ibiza es demasiado, es como una sobredosis de todo: DJs, turistas, drogas.

Mallorca podría competir con eso, sí. Pero bueno, en realidad me alegro de vivir aquí. No me gustaría ver en Mallorca lo que ocurre en Ibiza en verano. En Mallorca puedes pasártelo muy bien pero no tienes la sensación de vivir en una isla superturística.

Defected are on something of a roll right now - does that increase the pressure on you the label boss or does it make life easier?

We’re in a great position at the moment, but it hasn’t happened overnight. An incredible amount of planning and hard work has gone into making the business a successful one. And now, certain doors are opening that have been closed for years. In Ibiza we’ve moved to Amnesia, without doubt one of the best clubs in the world, and we’re working with a phenomenal amount of highly talented recording artists and DJs – both established and up and coming. But success also

increases the pressure to maintain that level of success. House music in general is going through a real purple patch at the moment – especially in the mainstream – but that level of attention won’t last forever. The challenge for us is to maintain the business when house falls out of the limelight – which will happen.

What are your goals for the label in 2015?

In addition to Defected In The House at Amnesia, our other night, Glitterbox, has moved to Space Ibiza this year. Glitterbox was a real success story from last season, so we’re looking go build on that. We also want to make sure Defected is further

recognised around the world. There is a huge potential market for us in places like the US, where I believe a lot of younger music fans are getting tired of generic music and are looking for something with more heritage.

What’s the best way for young producers to catch your attention?

I listen to a huge amount of music every week and it’s rare that something really catches my attention. There’s a lot of badly produced, very average music out there! Focus on quality and don’t rush it. If you’re a new producer, no-one out there is waiting for your music, so make sure you make a strong first impression.

Ahora empiezan a abrirse algunas puertas que llevaban años cerradas. En Ibiza nos hemos trasladado a Amnesia, sin duda uno de los mejores clubs del mundo, y estamos trabajando con muchísimos DJs y artistas de enorme talento, algunos consolidados y otros que van a triunfar pronto. El éxito también aumenta la presión porque hay

que mantener el nivel. La música house en general atraviesa un momento dulce, especialmente en el mainstream, pero ese nivel de atracción no durará para siempre. El desafío para nosotros es mantener el negocio cuando el house salga de la pista central, lo cual ocurrirá tarde o temprano. ¿Cuáles son los objetivos del sello para 2015?

Además de Defected in the House y Amnesia, nuestro otro espacio es Glitterbox, que se ha instalado este año en Space Ibiza. Glitterbox tuvo mucho éxito la temporada pasada, así que estamos intentando seguir adelante con ello. También queremos asegurarnos de que Defected sigue

obteniendo reconocimientos en todo el mundo. Hay un enorme mercado potencial en lugares como Estados Unidos, donde, en mi opinión, muchos de los fans más jóvenes se están casando de la música genérica y empiezan a buscar algo con más raíz. ¿Cuál es la mejor manera de que los productores jóvenes llamen tu atención?

Escucho mucha música y es raro que algo me llame la atención de verdad.

Hay muchas cosas mal producidas por ahí, música muy mediocre. Hay que centrarse en la calidad y tomárselo con calma. Si eres productor y acabas de empezar, nadie va a estar esperando a que le lleves tu música, así que procura dar una buena primera impresión.

Believe it or not, Macaulay Culkin’s first major screen performance since 1994 was actually rather good. Focusing on the New York club scene of the late 80s, Party Monster chronicles the rise and fall of clubland promoter Michael Alig, who was renowned for hosting twisted parties. This deathly saga co-stars Marilyn Manson, with Felix da Housecat supplying the soundtrack. // Lo creas o no, esta película, primera aparición de Macaulay Culkin en la gran pantalla después de 1994, es bastante buena. Referencing the fallout of Generation X, the plot here centres on a group of friends who live their lives for Saturday night. The script is accessible and amusing and many of the club culture references are based on truths, including the ‘spliff politics’ scene, which is arguably the most accurate counterculture depiction in the film. playing mallorca The EDM scene in London is alive and kicking with some of the legendary clubs such as Ministry of Sound catering for these nights. For me this is still my favourite venue in the city. The best EDM raves I’ve experienced have been at summer festivals and these are the moments when we really get to enjoy the scene: I can’t wait to watch David Guetta at Wireless this July. I’ve played in Ibiza every summer for the last 5 years and I’m excited to do my 2015 summer residency in Mallorca. It will be the first time I’ve played there and with the new BH Mallorca hotel and venue this looks set to be THE party destination for the season. I’m really excited to explore the island and get a different prospective.

I’ve heard so many great things about the island so I’m looking forward to creating some of my own memories!

La escena dance londinense está más viva que nunca y algunos de sus clubs más legendarios, como el Ministry of Sound, siguen dando guerra noche tras noche. El Ministry sigue siendo el mejor club de la capital británica. Algunas de las mejores fiestas de música electrónica que recuerdo fueron en festivales de verano. Es la época del año en que realmente se disfruta de la escena. Estoy deseando ver a David Guetta en Wireless este julio. Llevo pinchando en Ibiza cinco años en verano y, la verdad, es que me hace ilusión ser residente en Mallorca en 2015. Será la primera vez que pinche en esta isla y me da la sensación que el hotel BH Mallorca va a ser el sitio donde todo el mundo querrá ir de fiesta. Tengo muchas ganas de explorarla y adquirir un nuevo punto de vista. ¡He escuchado cosas increíbles sobre Mallorca y estoy desando poder verlas con mis propios ojos y crear mis propios recuerdos!

Four years ago, Concha Buika settled in Miami, looking for a strategically-located base camp for her world tours. The son of political exiles from Guinea, sought refuge in flamenco in the popular neighbourhoods of Palma, until she delivered a major international hit in 2006 with ‘Mi niña Lola’, a savvy combination of copla and flamenco. hat was Mallorca like when you were a little girl? How do you remember it?

I always find it romantic and laid-back, although it’s tumultuous too. One gets the feeling that it’s a place where no one ever says anything, but the people of Mallorca are very revolutionary. I’m the activist that I am, the activist that I am in my songs, because I grew up where I grew up. Mallorca is also very addictive.

What neighbourhood are you from?

El Molinar. It’s one of the best neighbourhoods in Palma.

Has it changed a lot?

Not too much, although I can’t go very often either, except for the typical vacation in August or Christmas. I haven’t got the time, because our tours – being world tours – force you to travel all over the place. Last year we spent a lot of time in Turkey, the Mediterranean and Latin America and now we’ve got to go even further. Two years ago we were in Asia, New Zealand, Canada, the United States, then Latin America…

This year we’re going to do more shows in Europe, and we were already in southern Africa. It’s hard to find time to come home.

What are your favourite places in Palma?

I like the whole city, because in each place I remember a little piece of something that I experienced there. It’s wonderful and no matter how much you explore it, it always has something wonderful to be discovered. It’s also a very picturesque city. It’s got a lot of secrets, lots of memories.

What’s your idea of a perfect plan for a Sunday morning in Palma?

To go to the beach of El Molinar, which is divine! I love El Molinar, Ciudad Jardín, Portixol up to Arenal, that whole neighbourhood. And also the typical, magical places outside of Palma like Valldemosa, Sa Abella… You have to walk around it, try a good potato coca and enjoy yourself, because everything you soak in that Sunday morning will help make you radiant all week long. The light of that area and everything you inhale is wonderful.

You also have to go the house were Chopin lived. When I went there, I saw the rebotica with his medications –he was sick-, the piano he continued to use to compose, and I was totally moved… And finally, you should check out Esporles. The island has spots where you don’t know what part of the world you’re in.

¿Cómo es la Mallorca que recuerdas de cuando eras niña?

Siempre la encuentro romántica y tranquila aunque es siempre convulsa.

Da la sensación de que es una tierra donde nadie dice nada, pero el mallorquín es muy revolucionario.

Yo soy todo lo puñetera y revolucionaria que soy, activista en mis canciones, porque crecí donde crecí. Mallorca es además muy adictiva. ¿De qué barrio eres?

Del Molinar. Es uno de los mejores barrios de Palma, de donde sale gente muy inteligente, que sabe sobrevivir. ¿Ha cambiado mucho?

No demasiado aunque tampoco puedo ir mucho salvo el típico agosto o navidades que vas de vacaciones. No tengo tiempo, porque nuestras giras, al ser mundiales, tienes que viajar por diferentes zonas del planeta. El año pasado estuvimos mucho por Turquía, Mediterráneo y Latinoamérica y ahora tendremos que irnos más allá.

Hace dos años estuvimos por Asia, Nueva Zelanda, Canadá, Estados Unidos y luego Latinoamérica… Este año vamos a hacer más Europa y ya estuvimos por el sur de Africa. El salto a casa es difícil. ¿Cuáles son tus lugares favoritos de Palma?

Me gusta toda la ciudad, porque en cada lugar guardo un cachito de algo de lo que viví. Es maravillosa y por mucho que a veces la pateen, que es una ciudad sufrida, seguirá siendo maravillosa. Es una ciudad muy pictórica. Tiene muchos secretos, muchos recuerdos.

Cuéntanos un plan ideal para un domingo por la mañana en Palma… ¡Ir a playa de El Molinar, que es divina! Me encanta El Molinar, Ciudad Jardín, todo lo que es el Portixol hasta el Arenal, esa barriada. Y también los clásicos y mágicos lugares de palma, como Valldemosa, Sa Abella… Hay que pasarse por allá, comerse unas buenas cocas de patata y deleitarse, porque todo lo que absorbes en esa mañana de domingo te sirve luego para brillar toda la semana siguiente. La luz de esa zona y todo lo que aspiras es maravillosa. También hay que ir a la casa donde estuvo Chopin. Cuando fui a la Casa de Chopin vi la rebotica con los medicamentos para él, que estaba malito, el piano con el que seguía componiendo, me emocioné de tal manera…

Habría que cerrar el plan visitando Esporles… Esa isla tiene rincones que no sabes en qué parte del mundo estás.

Songs from a ‘pot’ Apart from singing, Buika also writes, and her second book, ‘A los que amaron a mujeres difíciles y acabaron por soltarse’ (To those who loved difficult women and ended up letting go), has been met with unexpected success. It includes photos, poems, thoughts and ‘songs from a pot for a single serving’: “because instead of cooking according to real clock time, we should cook according to song time,” she says.

If you were to disappear in Mallorca, where might we find you?

In El Molinar, at my mother’s house. Or maybe at my friend Irene’s place – it’s been a long time since I’ve spoken with her and I think she’s angry with me.

I’d go looking for her so I could say: “What’s the matter, chocho? Why are you mad at me?” I’d also go stop by to see my brother. Or I might go to Es Trenc, take my clothes off and feel free in the world. Because Mallorca is incredibly local, but also totally universal. When you’re nude in Es Trenc beach and you’re nude in the world.

And if your stomach is feeling homesick?

Then I’d go to S’Eixerit, in Portixol. They make this wonderful rice stew called arroz brut and there is also a super lovely courtyard, the way courtyards used to be on the island. It’s really nice.

What’s are your immediate plans for this summer?

They’re a bit crazy, as always. I have to finish my album, shoot a music video and present my book in lots of cities, like San Francisco, Puerto Rico, Miami, Colombia…

También saludaría a mi hermano. O me iría a Es Trenc, a desnudarme y a sentirme libre en el mundo. Porque Mallorca es increíblemente local, pero es universal a tope.

Estás desnudo en la playa de Es Trenc y estás en el mundo. ¿Y si el estómago tiene nostalgia?

Entonces debería ir el S’Eixerit, en Portixol y tomarme un arroz brut. Allí tienen esa caldereta de arroz maravillosa y el restaurante tiene un patio súper bonito, como eran antiguamente los patios en la isla. Se está muy bien. ¿Cuál es tu agenda inmediata para este verano?

Un poco loca, como siempre. Tengo que terminar el disco, grabar el videoclip y la presentación de mi libro en muchas ciudades, como San Francisco, Puerto Rico, Miami, Colombia…

T

he chimney shape of the open part of the courtyard encouraged a breeze whilst a well provided water to quench the thirst.

Courtyards became increasingly elaborate over the years, as families outdid each other with their elaborate designs. Renaissance and Baroque styles are evident and most of them that we can see today date from the 17th and 18th centuries.

Each house has its own design but many features are common. A huge wooden door opens onto the courtyard where a low, wide arch separates the covered section from the open area. An elegant staircase heads up to the family’s apartment while smaller doors lead off to other parts of the house.

Horses and carriages were kept on the ground floor but it was also home to the master’s office. Many families owned estates around the island, where they had country houses they visited in the summer. Estate managers organised the workers and sold the produce so they regularly came to their master’s house to deal with business matters.

The ground floor was also home to workshops and store rooms. There would also be a stable for a few donkeys which collected food from the markets.

Muchas familias poseían tierras a lo largo y ancho de la isla, en las que construían casas solariegas para veranear. Los capataces supervisaban el trabajo en el campo y vendían los productos agrícolas, así que, a menudo, viajaban a la ciudad para rendir cuentas al propietario. En el piso bajo había también talleres y almacenes y un establo con algunos asnos que se usaban para transportar los víveres adquiridos en el mercado.

La familia vivía en la primera planta. En ella ocupaban una serie de estancias de altos techos que se elevaban hasta la altura completa de la casa. Los sirvientes vivían en esa misma planta, dispuestos siempre a atender a sus señores con 78 / gcmaLLORCA

Courtyards became an important part of social life in the city’s narrow streets. On certain occasions the family positioned the doors to announce family news. They decorated the courtyard with flowers to celebrate the birth of a child and neighbours were encouraged to enter to share the occasion.

Closed doors meant a death in the family and mourners would only enter through a pedestrian door, to pass on their condolences.

NOTICIAS FAMILIARES. Los patios jugaban un importante papel en la vida social que se desarrollaba en las estrechas calles de la ciudad. En determinadas ocasiones se anunciaban las noticias familiares en las puertas de sus residencias.

Decoraban el patio con flores para celebrar el nacimiento de un niño y a los vecinos se les alentaba a entrar para compartir la felicidad de los habitantes de la casa. Las puertas cerradas, por lo contrario, significaban la muerte de un familiar. Los allegados solo podían acceder por una puerta de servicio para hacer llegar sus condolencias.

high ceilings and they filled the entire height of the house.

The servants lived on the same floor ready to attend to their employees every desire, whether it be cooking, washing or cleaning. The top floor was a flat, open space covered by the roof, where clothes were dried.

There are literally dozens of courtyards around Palma.

Around half were built by members of the aristocracy but many were built by merchants and ship owners who carried goods across the Mediterranean. Others were lawyers who dealt with justice in the city and a few were privateers who sailed the seas fighting pirates.

Here a just a few examples to look out for. The Solleric Palace on Joan Carlos I Plaza has a fine double staircase and it was built by the merchant fleet owner, Marc Valles d’Almadra. The council now owns the building and it houses an art gallery. There are many examples on Carrer Sant Jaume which runs north of the square. You can find the elaborate entrance to the Hotel Born, the headquarters of the Barcelo Foundation, and Ca’n San

El edificio pertenece hoy al ayuntamiento y alberga un centro de exposiciones. En la calle Sant Jaume, que parte desde el lado norte de la plaza, hay otros ejemplos. Simon, built by a French count who had escaped Napoleon’s revolution.

Can Sureda on Carrer Savella, next to Santa Eulalia Church, has the largest courtyard, with a huge staircase and many columns. One owner, Joan Sureda, was arrested and condemned to death for organising a Bourbon conspiracy in 1711, during the War of Spanish Succession. Fortunately he escaped, his side won and he was rewarded handsomely.

There are several examples on Carrer Morey, off Plaza Santa Eulalia. Amongst which we can find an intriguing carving of two women with their finger pressed to their lips in the Almadra house. It refers to the marriage of Joan Ordines d’Almadra to the rich Angela Prohens. The inscription says ‘marry and be quiet, silence will bring you jewels’, a constant reminder to his wife to say nothing about his business. mallorcarutes.com

En el de la casa Almadrà podemos encontrar un intrigante grabado que muestra a dos mujeres llevándose el dedo a los labios, referencia al matrimonio entre Joan Ordines d’Almadrà y la rica Àngela Prohens.

Una inscripción dice: «Cásate y calla: el silencio te traerá joyas», perenne recordatorio a la esposa de que no debía hablar sobre los negocios de su marido.

revor Clark is a grafter. His photography career has spanned more than six decades. He started as an assistant in a studio in London before heading off to do his National Service. “I was eighteen years old and very lucky to be given a job as photographer for the Royal Air Force. I covered aerial, industrial and did press photos.” After his mandatory service he landed what many would consider a dream job: travelling around the world on a cruise liner as the resident snapper. “I went everywhere, the Taj Mahal, the Pyramids, you name it.” The ship was based in New York so Trevor had the opportunity to hear some of his Jazz heroes playing live in Harlem. “Dizzy Gillespie was like a god to me, and I could find myself within a couple of feet of him in a bar.

It was an incredible experience”.

Trevor’s stint on the liner lasted for four years before he returned to London where he started to get work in the advertising and fashion industries. “My studio was at the top of a building on Old Compton Street in Soho”. That’s slap bang in the middle of ‘Swinging Sixties’ to you and I. “So I was right in the centre of everything going on. It was the place to be, so many musicians were starting their careers there. I knew about jazz, but I didn’t really know anything about pop music. By chance I met an agent at a party and she asked me to take photos of one of her bands. It turned out to be The Beatles. My friends didn’t understand why I was doing it, what are you doing that rubbish for? They asked me. But I enjoyed it. One thing led to another and soon I was taking photos of hundreds of different bands for their promotional materials. I also shot The Rolling Stones.

was always telling them to do what they were told and pay attention to what I wanted them to do! This was pre drugs though; they didn’t take long to take hold of him.”

When Trevor photographed The Rolling Stones in 1963 they didn’t even have a record out and they only had one night’s work a week at The Marquee Club playing for students.

“The story goes that after I shot this photo of Mick Jagger he bumped into John Lennon on Old Compton Street and asked him to write a song for them because they needed a hit and that’s what they released.”

It was in 1968, after Trevor realized there was a gap in the advertising market that he was inspired to make the move to Spain. “It was a very big step, I got told by many of my competitors that I was mad: I was at the top of my profession and they couldn’t see why I would want to move, but I knew that if I was in a place where the sun shone and there was good light that I could make a good business for myself ”. Originally he wanted to live in Ibiza, but it wouldn’t have been practical as there were no developing labs for the films. So Mallorca it was. “I was quickly proved right as the location was perfect for so many different types of shoots. I worked for some very big clients. My photos were featured on many front covers of magazines, catalogues, holiday brochures. We had an amazingly busy schedule. But we were also continually entertaining the models, the clients, everyone who came for the booking. We’d work all day and party all night.

UNA VIDA A TRAVÉS DEL OBJETIVO. Trevor Clarke es un currante con más de seis décadas de fotografía profesional a las espaldas. Empezó como aprendiz en un estudio londinense antes de hacer el servicio militar.

“Tenía dieciocho años y tuve mucha suerte porque me asignaron un puesto como fotógrafo en la Royal Air Force.

Hacía fotos aéreas y de temática industrial, y también para la prensa”. Tras su etapa en el ejército consiguió lo que muchos considerarían un trabajo de ensueño: un puesto de fotógrafo residente en un crucero. “Viajé por todo el mundo, vi el Taj Mahal, las pirámides...”. El buque tenía su base en Nueva York, así que Trevor tuvo la oportunidad de escuchar en directo a algunos de sus ídolos del jazz en Harlem. “Dizzy Gillespie era para mí como un dios y pude verlo tocar a medio metro de mí en un bar. Fue una experiencia increíble”.

Trevor estuvo empleado en el crucero durante cuatro años y cuando volvió a Londres empezó a trabajar en los sectores de la publicidad y la moda. “Tenía el estudio en el ático de un edificio de Old Compton Street, en el Soho”. Es decir, se metió de lleno en el meollo de los felices sesenta. “Estaba en el centro de todo. Londres era el lugar en el que había que estar. Fueron muchísimos los músicos que comenzaron sus carreras entonces. Yo conocía un poco el jazz pero no tenía mucha idea de lo que era el pop. Por casualidad conocí a un manager en una fiesta que me ofreció hacer un reportaje de fotos a uno de sus grupos. Resultó que eran The Beatles.

Mis amigos no entendían por qué acepté. ¿Por qué vas a hacer esa porquería de trabajo?”, me preguntaban.

Pero lo pasé muy bien. Una cosa llevó a la otra y al poco estaba fotografiando a cientos de grupos distintos para su material promocional. También hice fotos a The Rolling

I don’t really know how I survived as I was a bit of a party animal when I first moved here what with the shoots and the visits from my musician friends”.

But he did survive, and 47 years on he’s still going strong via a couple of other business ventures including property development and a palm tree farm.

Trevor’s work is featured in the National Portrait Gallery, “It’s an enormous honour to be there”, but his main focus these days is his garden: moving tonnes of earth by hand, and he loves his palm trees. “They just say exotic to me, they say ‘holiday’. I always tried to include them somewhere in my photos of Mallorca”.

Brian Jones estaba todo el tiempo diciéndoles que tenían que hacer lo que les decía el manager ¡y que prestasen atención a mis instrucciones! Eso fue antes de que Brian se metiera en la droga, no tardo mucho en caer”.

Cuando Trevor fotografió a The Rolling Stones en 1963, estos no habían sacado ni un disco y tocaban una noche a la semana en The Marquee Club, ante un público formado por estudiantes. “Según el rumor, después de hacerle aquella foto a Mick Jagger, este se topó con John Lennon en Old Compton Street y le pidió que le escribiera una canción para ellos porque necesitaban un hit. Y así fue”.

En 1968, Trevor llegó a la conclusión de que la industria de la publicidad se había estancado y decidió trasladarse a España.

“Fue un paso muy importante. Muchos de mis competidores me decían que estaba loco. Estaba en la cresta de la ola y no entendían por qué quería irme a vivir a otro país. Yo sabía que en un lugar soleado y con buena luz podría sacar adelante mi propio negocio”. En un primer momento se instaló en Ibiza, pero no era nada práctico porque no había laboratorios de revelado. Así que se cambió a Mallorca. “Pronto me di cuenta de que había hecho lo correcto, pues la isla ofrecía opciones para practicar muchos tipos de fotografía. Mis fotos aparecían en portadas de revistas, catálogos, folletos turísticos. Tenía una agenda de trabajo apretadísima. Además, nos ocupábamos de atender continuamente a los modelos, a los clientes, a todos los que tenían que ver con cada uno de los proyectos. Trabajábamos todo el día y salíamos de madrugada. No sé muy bien cómo sobreviví porque lo cierto es que me gustaba mucho la fiesta y no perdonaba una. Y eran muchas, entre las sesiones fotográficas y las visitas de mis amigos músicos”.

Pues sobrevivió, y cuarenta y siete años más tarde sigue dando guerra con un par de negocios más, una constructora y una explotación de palmeras. Se conservan obras de Trevor en la National Portrait Gallery de Londres: “Es un grandísimo honor estar ahí”. No obstante, su principal ocupación hoy día es su jardín, en el que mueve toneladas de tierra cubo a cubo.

Adora sus palmeras. “Para mí significan exotismo, vacaciones.

Siempre intento que aparezcan en mis fotos de la isla”.

We are greeted with upbeat techno laced with passages of Eurythmics, spun by DJ Alexander Som of Madrid. The first to arrive get their groove on as the sun sinks into the horizon over Calvià. When Les Castizos appear, the stage seems to dilate and the party really gets going. Full of energy, this Spanish duo manages to fill the dance floor with their electronica. Everybody’s dancing now, and something starts to come alive in them as night falls, and LED lights and screens throb to the beat of the music. The spotlights and all the gear on stage begins to shine. In the background,

INAUGURACIÓN THE STAGE. Según nos acercamos, el madrileño Alexander Som destila un techno alegre en donde se cuelan pasajes de Eurythmics. Los primeros en llegar bailan de buen rollo mientras atardece despacio en Calvià. Cuando llegan Les Castizos, el escenario crece, la plaza se hace poderosa. Energéticos, consiguen llenar la pista a golpe de batucada electrónica. La gente baila y algo empieza a tomar vida dentro de todos mientras cae la noche y las luces LED y las pantallas laten al ritmo de la fiesta. By 11 o’clock everything is on fire, jets of coloured water spurt up from the pools and Blur is re-mixed with tribal sounds. Beneath showers of confetti, the party comes to an end. From stage they shout: Thanks Mallorca!!

Bhima´s always looked up to his big brother, Rupa. “He’s six years older than me; whatever he was doing I wanted to do it as well”. A combination of Rupa’s love of clubbing and Bhima’s affinity with music meant that it wasn’t long before Bhima could be found in his bedroom night after night, playing on a turntable that he and his brother had bought from a bloke in the Blackfriar Towers estate.

“I was just playing track after track and learning to mix on this belt drive turntable”.

Bhima started his professional DJ career after a chance conversation with the owner of a record shop that he frequented in his home town of Manchester. “I was fifteen, he saw that I was buying stuff that was playing in his club Havok and he offered me a chance to play the opening set.” He soon became a regular fixture at the club and it wasn’t until his 16th birthday that he fessed up that he’d been underage. “Mike took me into the office, and pretended like I was

in big trouble for not telling him how old I was. I really thought that was it.”

Thankfully for BH Mallorca that was just the beginning.

Bhima has DJed a wide spectrum of music, starting with hip hop, sidetracking into indie, to hard techno then over to Detroit house and seriously funky house.

What’s the best thing about what he does? “I love to provoke a reaction of dance out of the people. That’s all I need.”

BHIMA LOGAN, DJ RESIDENTE EN BH HOTEL. Bhima siempre quiso ser como su hermano mayor, Rupa. “Me lleva seis años. Todo lo que él hiciera yo quería hacerlo también”. La combinación del amor de Rupa por la discoteca y la aptitud musical de Bhima hizo que, no mucho tiempo después, éste empezase a pasarse las noches pinchando en su dormitorio con unos platos que habían comprado a un tipo de Blackfriars Towers. “No hacía más que pinchar un corte tras otro, intentando aprender a

mezclar con esos platos, que eran de los de correa”. Bhima comenzó su carrera como DJ profesional tras una charla fortuita con el dueño de una tienda de discos de su ciudad natal. “Tenía quince años y él se dio cuenta de que compraba la misma música que él ponía en la discoteca Havok, que era suya. Me dio la oportunidad de pinchar como telonero del DJ residente”. Pronto se convirtió en DJ habitual del club y cuando cumplió los dieciséis decidió confesar que era menor de edad. “Mike me llamó a su despacho y me hizo creer que me había metido en un buen lío por no decirle mi verdadera edad. Pensé que ahí se acababa todo”.

Por suerte para BH Mallorca, no fue sino el comienzo.

Bhima ha pinchado muchos tipos de música, desde hip hop a indie pasando por hardtechno, house de Detroit o house del más funky. ¿Que qué es lo que mejor hace? “Me encanta provocar reacciones en la gente mientras baila.

BCM, The capital of electronica With its 27th anniversary around the corner, BCM is, to quote its manager Xisco Alguacil, “Bartolomé Cursach’s dream of having a giant club that would impact the whole area, because Magaluf used to have small clubs and bars, but not a single one that stood out.

The goal was to earn an international reputation not just for the club, but for the entire resort and that’s the path we are following.” When this club first opened its doors, the music scene was very different. “There was no such thing as the disc jockey,” recalls Xisco, who remembers that for the opening of BCM they brought in top artists from Europe and America, like the Spice Girls and Latoya Jackson… the best pop of the period. BCM caters to a young crowd of 18- to 30-year-olds. “For some of them, it’s the first time they’ve ever been away from home,” says Xisco. “They want to hear good music and have fun. That’s why we’ve got a second room, where the music is less important. That’s where we throw parties like our foam parties and our washing-machine parties. We’re the only club in the world that does a party like that.” The VIP area, which have twice the capacity this year, sits on a glass walkway overlooking the DJs –“so close you can almost touch them” – and the entire stage. For the club’s managers, BCM is, hands down “the capital of electronica”.

El espacio VIP, que el año que viene duplicará su capacidad, está construido en una pasarela de cristal, con vistas al DJ, “hasta casi tocarlo”, y una privilegiada panorámica sobre el escenario. Para el director de BCM, la discoteca es, sin lugar a dudas, “la capital de la música electrónica”.

How long have you been the face of Pacha?

Ever since it opened, three years ago.

What do you bring to the club?

What they want is for people to come, and for the VIP clientele to stand out. My role is to bring some colour and a good vibe to the place. I have a rather unique way of dressing and they need to have people like that.

Being the face of such a famous club, does that give you power?

It does, actually. At openings and important parties, people beg you to invite them.

When you’re in the VIP area, does it feel like you’re working?

Honestly, this is a really cool job. It breaks up the routine and you can drink… Although during peak season, when you’ve been at it for several days, it starts to get to you and there are nights when you’d rather be at home, chilling out on your sofa.

Do people get dressed up to come here?

You see a bit of everything. There are lots of foreigners who might come in off a boat who are dressed casually, in flip-flops or t-shirts. But the local crowd does get dolled up.

Cuando estás en el VIP, ¿tienes la sensación de que estás trabajando?

La verdad es que este es un trabajo muy guay. Sales de la rutina, puedes beber, pero en temporada, cuando llevas varios días, te resientes y hay

noches en las que preferirías estar en el sofá de tu casa. ¿La gente se arregla mucho para ir a esta discoteca?

Hay de todo. Hay muchos extranjeros que tal vez vienen de un barco y visten informales, con chancletas o camisetas.

El mojito. Lo hago mezclando rones y lo llevo estudiando varios años. Es un mojito que sirve para hombres y mujeres y se adapta a los gustos con sólo revolverlo un poco. ¿Qué es lo especial de tus combinados?

La decoración. Es importante, que es como comer por los ojos. Cuando pienso en un cóctel, antes lo veo en mi cabeza. Lo que no hago es malabarismo.

For three years now, Eva Santamaría has been making sure that “every single customer who comes in leaves satisfied: that the service was good and the food was to their liking.” The star attraction of Asadito is a spectacular outdoor barbecue, where anyone can watch how they prepare their meats to perfection. They light the grill every day in the morning and feed the fire with holm oak and almond wood mixed with oak charcoal. All the meat they use at Asadito –almost all of it beef from Galicia and Ireland – is of the very highest quality and is cut by their own butchers. The Galician beef sirloin, the fillet steak and the entrecote of cebón –a 400-kilo animal– are particularly delicious. “One of our signature dishes is the steak tartar,” says Santamaría, who admits that guests are also drawn to their fabulous outdoor patio surrounded by palm trees, soft music and the appetizing smell of grilled meat.

Este fuego se enciende cada día a primera hora y se alimenta con leña de encina y almendro mezcladas con carbón de encina para las brasas. Provisto de carnicería propia en donde se despiezan los cortes, la materia prima de Asadito, casi toda ternera gallega y angus irlandés, es de primerísima calidad. Destacan sus solomillos de ternera gallega, los entrecots y el cebón, la gran res de 400 kilos.

“Uno de nuestros platos emblemáticos es el steak tartar”, apunta Santamaría, que reconoce la atracción del público por su soberbia terraza abierta rodeada de palmeras, en donde suena un hilo musical delicado y sobrevuela un apetitoso olor a carne asada.

By CARLOS RISCO Localizada en Porto Cristo (Manacor), se encuentra en un pozo de unos 25 metros de diámetro y una profundidad de 7 metros. Tras el descenso y algunas galerías, la cueva se abre en un espectacular lago subterráneo que alcanza el metro y medio de profundidad.

Junto a los acantilados de la playa de Cala Varques, esta cueva, cuya entrada protege una higuera, invita a su exploración a través de una enorme bóveda que cierra la inmensa cámara.

Dentro, el llamado lago Victoria, de aguas cristalinas, tiene hasta un embarcadero.

Esta cueva histórica, dotada de un lago de aguas cristalinas históricamente utilizadas por los habitantes del poblado cercano, se abre en galería a través de un camino sinuoso. En el lago, destaca una poderosa estalagmita de color blanco de colosales dimensiones.

In the town of Llucmajor, this mainly-vertical “karst” cave can be accessed through a well 4 metres wide by eleven metres deep. A cave system of over 80 kilometres: more than 18 of which are underwater galleries. Cova Genovesa o cova d’en Bessó

Located in Porto Cristo (Manacor), this cave is in a well around 25 metres wide and seven metres deep. After descending through a series of galleries, it gives way to a spectacular underwater lake with a depth of up to a metre and a half. //

Cova des Pont

Next to the cliffs of Cala Varques beach, this cave, whose entrance is protected by a fig tree, invites exploration through a giant arch at the end of an immense chamber. Inside, the so-called “Lake Victoria”, has crystal-clear waters and even a little pier. //

Cova des Pirata

Very popular and accessible, this cave is covered by all kinds of calcareous formations of all shapes and sizes. Located in Majorca’s S’Albufera Natural Park, this cave has an angled entrance on the coast, so dangerous that a grille has been put over it.
