REMEMBERING PAUL

by Terry Somerson, March 2019 Paul and I met in 1980 in an office on the 41st floor of a building at 3 Park Ave. in New York. I was managing editor of a publishing company owned by the New York Times and Paul was starting work that day as a marketing director, promoting Times-branded merchandise. I introduced myself and we chatted, but of course I could not know at that moment that for the next 38 years we would live our own unique love story. Or that he would ultimately find his way to his true passion for the world of Arts and Crafts silver and jewelry. After that first quick conversation, the only impressions that I took away were that Paul was scary smart, spoke very fast, and had excellent taste in Italian suits. But there definitely was a spark, and we got together not long after that initial meeting.

Many people have asked me how Paul got interested in the Arts and Crafts era, and I cannot pinpoint a single time or place. But thinking back on it, there were signs pretty early on. He liked history and old things. He was fascinated by the stories behind those things. And he had the energy, interest, and commitment of a collector long before he acquired his first piece of Kalo silver. (As a child, he had a serious coin collection and in college he collected pinball machines.) When he was interested in something, he gave it everything.

TECHNOLOGY But for a while his life took a different path. Technology heated up in the 1980s with the introduction of the personal computer, and Paul was an early adopter. (His first IBM PC had a serial number in the 700s.) From his work with the New York Times Company Paul went on to a long and successful career as an influential and well-respected technology journalist. He was a talented writer who believed that complex concepts could be explained in simple terms without pretension. Paul was one of the first editors hired to PC Magazine, a must– read for any serious computer user. During this time he got a contract from Bantam Books to write a basic primer to help new computer users get up and running. He sat down at his desk in our New York apartment and worked around the clock for months, missing Thanksgiving, Christmas, and New Years. Once the book’s manuscript was safely at the printer, Paul and I went off to finally get married after eight years together, with no idea that PC Magazine DOS Power Tools — a hefty 800-page computer book — would go on to sell about a million copies and be translated into several languages. Paul was surprised and very pleased at its success. I was not surprised.

Paul eventually rose through the ranks at Ziff-Davis as editor-in-chief, executive editor, editorial director, and vice president, working on several successful magazines in New York and California, including leading the launch of the U.K. edition of PC Magazine, which took us to London. He eventually returned to San Francisco to start PC/Computing magazine, which took a broader and more creative view of how computers could fit into our lives. While there, among many innovations, he designed and built a state of the art usability lab that looked like a NASA control room and recruited users of different skill levels to test hardware and software. It had to have been one of the earliest and most impressive facilities of its kind. Under Paul’s leadership, PC/Computing won two prestigious National Magazine Awards, competing against mainstream magazines.

EARLY COLLECTIING It was during our time in London that Paul and I began to haunt antiques stores and discovered Portobello Market and the silver collection at the Victoria and Albert Museum. Travels through the countryside took us to the Cotswolds villages of Broadway and Chipping Campden to learn about C. R. Ashbee and the Guild of Handicraft. One day I made a pilgrimage by myself to Walthamstow to the William Morris Gallery, having already found Liberty of London on Regent Street. Everything we saw and learned made us appreciate Arts and Crafts history and design more and more. And we carried this interest with us when we returned to California.

In the redwood forests of the small Bay Area town of Woodside, we lived in a 1930s-era log house that was soon filled with beautiful Stickley-style furniture. We made frequent trips to local shops specializing in Arts and Crafts design and began collecting pottery, art tiles, tinted photographs, and even textiles. We slowly began to recognize marks and labels. It was a wonderful time made even more wonderful by the arrival of our son Sam, whom we adopted as a newborn in 1999. With my time and energy now focused primarily on the baby, Paul continued to study and research the American Arts and Crafts era by himself. And as his knowledge and his interests evolved, he began to get into some serious collecting. After many years as a computer magazine executive, Paul left the world of technology behind to concentrate on the Arts and Crafts era and its beautiful metal objects.

CHICAGO SILVER Why Chicago and why Kalo? Early on, Paul had the great fortune to meet Aram Berberian and his mother Rosalie Berberian, and acquire some Kalo pieces from ARK Antiques. Aram and Rosalie were great teachers — and friends — during this period. Paul was excited by the beauty and handwrought craftsmanship of the silver objects.

He would sometimes call me over to show me a lobed bowl or a monogrammed pitcher, pointing out the graceful shape, the balanced weight, or the expert chasing, planishing, or repoussé. These pieces were exquisite.

Kalo and the other Midwest makers had a distinctive aesthetic that appealed to Paul and, as usual, he went for total immersion.

He acquired hollowware in silver and copper and began to buy brooches, necklaces, and bracelets in both floral and geometric forms, some even with a modernist design. He became interested in the Boston makers Frank Gardner Hale, Edward Oakes, and many others, whose jewelry he referred to as small works of art. And he continued to study, talk to other collectors, and refine his acquisitions. Always a writer, he took his learnings about the makers, materials, techniques, and history and began to compile the amazing compendium of information that became his website, named ChicagoSilver.com after the company he founded in 2006. He set up a small photography studio at home and spent endless hours bent over the tent, adjusting the lighting and angles to get great photographs. Paul always said that silver was difficult to photograph, and never thought his photos were very good, even as I assured him they were beautiful.

SHARING HIS PASSION In 2000, Paul and I attended our first Grove Park Inn Conference, and a few years later he was invited to speak at the 2008 conference, on the subject of Kalo Shop founder Clara Barck Welles and the shop’s long history.

I was very proud of him – he had worked hard on the presentation and it was well received. He’d brought a selection of Kalo objects to display, and after the lecture he stood by the glass case in the hotel’s lobby near the cavernous stone fireplace, chatting with people as they examined the pieces. Paul enjoyed sharing his love of Kalo and Arts and Crafts metal with anyone who was interested, so he was comfortable and happy in this crowd at the Grove Park Inn. As I watched, a woman approached him to thank him for the lecture, and they began to talk about Kalo. I soon realized that she was blind.

Without hesitation, Paul took a Kalo pitcher out of the case and guided her hands onto it. I listened to him describe its contours and features as the woman held it and felt its weight. A small crowd gathered as Paul kindly helped this woman “see” the piece with her hands. This brief episode in the lobby at the Grove Park Inn perfectly illustrated Paul’s deep knowledge, commitment, and generosity. I later found out that the woman and her husband were enthusiastic collectors of Kalo. I thank her sincerely for giving Paul the opportunity to share his love of silver with her that day. And I will always think of this scene warmly and -especially in recent months – even shed a few tears at its memory.

In the months since Paul’s sudden death last year, I have learned a few things. For one, I have come to realize that his tireless work to build his extraordinary collection was truly a labor of love. And that the time that he spent researching, acquiring, polishing, photographing, cataloguing, and talking about these objects was a testament to his dedication and commitment to keeping them and their makers alive.

I have also come to realize as I never did before that Paul was a trusted and generous resource not only for random people asking about a mark, for example, but also for other collectors as well as curators and scholars who were searching for a missing link to their own stories. Sometimes these people found their way to our home, where they would sit and talk shop with Paul for hours, with some of his favorite objects spread out before them.

A regular visitor was John Walcher of Toomey & Co. with whom Paul forged a solid friendship early on with their mutual passion for collecting Chicago silver. I am especially grateful to John for his kind assistance with the collection over the past year.

There is so much to say about Paul. He was brilliant, challenging, funny, strong, and unfailingly loyal to his family and friends. His interests were famously eclectic. He loved Lenny Bruce, William Burroughs, Star Trek, Monty Python, West Side Story, and Ferris Bueller’s Day Off. He listened endlessly to Ella Fitzgerald, Mississippi John Hurt, The Beatles, and the soundtrack from Jersey Boys. He liked the stone walls and green fields of the coastal town in Massachusetts that we moved to after many years in California. He enjoyed walking on the beach — but only in winter. He was compulsive about keeping his bird feeders full and could happily stand at the kitchen window watching the hummingbirds for hours. He appreciated high-performance cars and great food, though he was a committed vegetarian for decades. He secretly felt that New York was the center of the world, though he would never admit it. He was an excellent father and friend to Sam. He was devoted to his sister Rosanne and loved his Aunt Betty and his late parents and brother. He doted on our dogs Ziggy and Coco, our cat Simon, and especially our parrot Katie. He was my kitchen prep cook and food tester, my tech support, my garden helper, my crossword puzzle partner. We disagreed on many things, though he always said we were more alike than different.

In the end, it did not matter. He was my best friend and I would give anything for a chance to tell him that again.

The Paul & Terry Somerson Collection really is Paul. It is his amazing achievement and gift. And while it is sad for me to see his precious objects go out into the world, I am so happy to be spreading Paul’s legacy for others to enjoy and cherish as much as he did.

INTRODUCTION

I often reflect on the auction business which, by nature, deals with many estates. I often tell people the most interesting individuals I have ever met, I have never actually met; however, it’s through their families’ stories and sorting through what they have assembled as a collection that gives me a glimpse of who they were in their lifetime. In this particular case though I was fortunate to personally meet Paul Somerson for the first time in January 2014, along with subsequent visits to his home. I am proud to have had him not only as a mentor, but also as a friend. It was a pleasure getting to know him over the years, his wife Terry, son Sam, sister Rosanne and her husband Jonathan, along with Ziggy, Coco, Katie and Simon.

I stumbled on ChicagoSilver.com when I was 23 years of age and still living in Springfield, Illinois. I had always been a collector and I recently started pursuing collecting silver metalwork and jewelry from the American Arts & Crafts movement, after purchasing a group lot of Kalo items at auction. It was not easy to find information, but Paul’s website was the most comprehensive compilation of scholarship, images and marks that I knew of at the time. I sent my first email to Paul in May 2008, started corresponding the following month and we emailed or called regularly until his passing in May 2018.

Paul was always eager to share his knowledge on the objects I wanted to know more about. He educated me through his stories and photographs, often sending me images of material that was not pictured on his site. One could hear in his voice, read in an email or on the website, the passion he had for these individual works of art. He would go to great depths to describe every minute aspect of an item, which would ultimately draw you closer to wanting to find one for your own collection.

ChicagoSilver.com inspired an immeasurable number of collectors and enthusiasts to delve into the world of American Arts & Crafts metalwork and jewelry. The site was extensive, as was the collection, and one would find themselves constantly revisiting to learn more. It was a link to earlier reference books, including: Sharon S. Darling’s 1977 Chicago Metalsmiths; the late 1980s to mid-early 2000s ARK Antiques catalogs; and Elyse Zorn Karlin’s 1993 Jewelry & Metalwork in the Arts & Crafts Tradition — to the recent reference books, including: Darcy Evon’s 2013 Hand Wrought Arts & Crafts Metalwork & Jewelry: 1890-1940 and Rosalie Berberian’s newly released 2019 Creating Beauty: Jewelry & Enamels of the American Arts & Crafts Movement.

Paul didn’t stop with his enthusiasm for collecting just one period or movement though. He continued to bridge gaps by having a true appreciation for the craft and how it evolved. Paul branched out to collect other silversmiths’ works, from Mid-Century Modernists to contemporary artisans. He was constantly researching and scouring sales to find items to add to the ever-growing collection. This auction catalog, with a selection of 500 lots sourced from the collection, shows the true breadth of what he and Terry assembled over the years.

We would like to thank Terry Somerson for entrusting Toomey & Co. Auctioneers with the monumental task to represent The Paul & Terry Somerson Collection of 20th & 21st Century Metalwork and Jewelry. This would not have been possible without a dedicated team working countless hours to prepare the collection to be offered. "His pieces are marked "F.W.L." or "F.W.LAWRENCE" or "F. WALTER LAWRENCE." According to Zapata, in 1913 he and two cousins incorporated the company, and added an "INC." to all their work. The piece below lacks this addition, and is presumably from the pre-1913 era. It features a worked ovoid frame centering a carved lapis flower vase on a small onyx plinth.

Spilling over the top of the vase is an arc of five silver blossoms, each with a round bezel-set cabochon green stone at its center. Surrounding the flowers are silver leaves, a small additional blossom, and curving silver ornament and silver ribbons that form a small bow below the bale. The paperclip chain is finely made, alternating plain loops with delicate floriform links."

TERMS & CONDITIONS THE AUCTION The auction is open to the public and there is no admission/sign-up fee or obligation to bid. The auctioneer introduces the objects for sale — known as “lots” — in numerical order as listed in the catalog. John Toomey Gallery, Inc., d/b/a Toomey & Co. Auctioneers (“Toomey & Co. Auctioneers”) acts as agent on behalf of the seller. The seller may not bid on his or her own property.

ESTIMATES / RESERVES The price estimates that appear at the end of each lot description are approximations of the range in which the price may fall. Some items are subject to a reserve, the price below which an item cannot be sold. The reserve usually is less than the low estimate.

BIDDING IN PERSON If you would like to bid in person, you must register for a “paddle” upon arriving at the auction. The paddle is numbered in order to identify you to the auctioneer. To register, the following will be required: (i) a form of photo identification, such as a driver’s license, passport, or government-issued identification; and (ii) your address, telephone number, and email address. If you are bidding for another person or entity, you will be required to provide authorization from that person or entity in order to bid on their behalf. Issuance of a bid paddle is in the auction house’s sole discretion. Invoices for all lots sold will be sent to the name and address in which the paddle is registered.

TELEPHONE BIDS, ABSENTEE BIDS, AND INTERNET BIDS If you are not able to attend the auction in person, you may bid over the telephone during the sale, leave bids (“absentee bids”), which will be executed for you by one of our representatives, making every effort to purchase the item for the lowest possible price without exceeding your limit, or bid via the Internet (see our website for instructions on how to bid at our auction via the Internet). PLEASE NOTE: Toomey & Co. Auctioneers offers the absentee bid service as a convenience to its clients who are unable to attend the auction and is not responsible for error or failure to execute bids. BUYER’S PREMIUM A buyer’s premium will be added to the “hammer price” (the final bid price of an item sold prior to any additional fees or premiums that may be charged) and is payable by the buyer as part of the total price for each lot purchased.

The buyer’s premium for telephone, absentee, or floor bidders is: n 25% of the hammer price up to and including $100,000; n 20% of any portion of the hammer price greater than $100,000 up to and including $1,000,000; and n 15% of any portion of the hammer price greater than $1,000,000.

LATE PAYMENT / DEFAULT Any payment not made within 10 days after its due date shall be considered delinquent and shall constitute a default on the part of buyer with respect to its obligations under these Terms & Conditions. Auctioneers shall reasonably decide; (ii) to hold the defaulting buyer liable for the total amount due and to commence legal proceedings for its recovery together with interest, legal fees, and costs to the fullest extent permitted under applicable law; (iii) to cancel the sale; (iv) to resell the property publicly or privately on such terms as Toomey & Co. Auctioneers shall deem fit; (v) to set off the outstanding amount remaining unpaid by the buyer against any amounts that Toomey & Co. Auctioneers may owe the buyer in any other transactions; (vi) to reject at any future auction any bids made by or on behalf of the buyer or to require a deposit from the buyer before accepting any bids; and (vii) to take such other action as Toomey & Co. Auctioneers deems necessary or appropriate.

STORAGE FEES Toomey & Co. Auctioneers may impose a storage fee of $5.00 per day per lot beginning on day 31 to be paid by buyer for any lot or item not collected by buyer within 30 days after the sale unless other prior arrangements have been made. Buyer agrees that Toomey & Co. Auctioneers shall have no liability for any damage to property left on its premises after such 30-day period.

OUR GUARANTEE Toomey & Co. Auctioneers guarantees the authenticity of that portion of the description of each lot as set out in bold type in the catalog, as amended by oral or written salesroom notes or announcements, which guarantee is in effect for 30 days after the auction in which the item is sold. Said guarantee does not apply to those lots listed as “in the style of,” “attributed to,” “the school of,” “in the manner of,” or “after.” Toomey & Co. Auctioneers is not responsible for errors or omissions in the catalog or in written or oral condition reports. All measurements are approximate. Toomey & Co. Auctioneers makes every effort to accurately describe its merchandise, but in the event errors occur, Toomey & Co. Auctioneers shall not be held responsible. Furniture: Furniture is described to the best of our ability. The wood is usually oak, unless otherwise stated. The furniture is old and over the years has acquired or developed dents, drink rings, separations, burns, chips, and assorted flaws — only those considered objectionable will be mentioned. n Fine Jewelry and Watches: Precious gems and metals will be tested and are guaranteed genuine as described. Gemstone quality will be described if not normal. Weights and measurements are approximate. Obvious and objectionable repairs or alterations are noted. Watches are the original factory product unless otherwise indicated. Original dials and overall watch condition will be noted on important pieces. Watch functions and accurate timekeeping are not guaranteed. The condition, age, originality, and quality of all items are evaluated using industry standards, and any questions should be asked prior to the sale. Jewelry and watches are sold as collector’s items. Therefore, everyday use should be evaluated on an item-by-item basis. n Lamps, Clocks, and Electrical Items: Lamps will be described based on patina and condition of any glass. Leaded lamps may have cracked segments. Some parts may have been replaced over the years, and this will be mentioned if determined to be objectionable. Shades with mica may contain minor flaking or burn spots, and these will be mentioned if determined to be objectionable. Lamps, clocks, and other electrical items are offered only for their decorative value. They are not represented to be in working order. n Metalwork: Metalwork will be described based on patina and the condition of the object. Dents, scratches, wear, and assorted flaws will be mentioned if determined to be objectionable. n Art Glass: Art glass may sometimes contain air bubbles and/or have surface scratches, lines in the making and chips to the pontil. Anything determined to be objectionable will be mentioned. Some glass may be ground at the factory, causing minor chips or flakes. This will be mentioned if determined to be excessive. Discoloration on the interior usually is present when originally produced and will not be noted unless determined to be excessive. n Paintings, Drawings, Prints, and Bronzes: Each object is guaranteed to be an authentic work by the artist listed. Any and all information listed in the catalog not printed in bold type should be considered as being to the best of our knowledge, is merely our opinion, and is not guaranteed to be correct. Every effort is made to ensure that all artwork is authentic and is represented accurately. If the authenticity of a purchased object is contested, it must be made known to us within 30 days of the sale in which the object was purchased as follows: a written letter from a noted authority provided to us, declaring the object to be executed by someone other than the artist listed. This authority may not have any vested interest in the artist’s work or the estate of the artist. The object must be returned to us in the same condition in which it was purchased. If it is determined that a piece is not authentic, only the purchase price may be refunded; there will be no compensation for damages, loss of profit, professional fees, transportation, or any other costs. If a painting is excessively dirty, we will attempt to note it in the description; however, we do not consider the normal darkening of varnish over time problematic, and accordingly any such darkening will not be noted in the description. n n

FRAMES Every effort is made to protect the frames included with these lots during pre-auction storage and post-auction shipping; however, Toomey & Co. Auctioneers shall not be responsible for any damage to frames, and no refunds will be granted due to frame damage.

CONDITION REPORTS / NOTICES / PREVIEW It is solely the buyer’s responsibility to be knowledgeable about the condition of a piece/pieces before bidding. Auction items are available for viewing/previewing during the week prior to the auction on the dates/times listed in the front of the catalog or by appointment. We encourage you or a knowledgeable representative to visit and inspect all lots at this time. If this cannot be done, we encourage you to contact us with your condition report requests prior to the sale. Our staff will give you our opinion of condition, answer any questions, and send photos if necessary. Any such opinion is not a professional conservator’s evaluation and is not to be relied on as a representation or statement of fact, but is given to the best of our knowledge. It is the buyer’s responsibility to be aware of all conditions, addendums, and corrections prior to the sale. Notices amending the catalog description of a lot after the catalog has gone to press are available at the auction house or are announced by the auctioneer. Please take note of them.

DELIVERY / SHIPPING Toomey & Co. Auctioneers offers safe and economical methods for delivery and shipping within the U.S. for certain purchases. Shipping estimates for such items (not including the cost of insurance) may be obtained prior to the auction by providing our Shipping Department with a full shipping address and the number(s) of the lot(s) you are interested in purchasing; quote requests must be received no less than three business days prior to the auction date.All Toomey & Co. Auctioneers delivery and shipping quotes are for delivery to a first floor or front door. Please note that glass is removed from all paintings and prints for shipping unless otherwise directed by the buyer and a signed waiver is provided. All items are shipped fully insured, unless the buyer wishes to waive such insurance, in which case our Waiver of Insurance form must be completed and returned to us. Delivery and shipping fees and insurance fees are payable by the buyer and are nonrefundable. Buyers using a third-party shipper and who require shipping quote(s) prior to the auction are responsible for obtaining such estimate(s) from the shipper and making shipping arrangements directly with such shipper.
