High Schools To Go Phone-Free, Too

Starting Thursday, all city public high schools will join middle schools in requiring students to store away their phones in magnetically sealed devices — as New Haven Public Schools (NHPS) rolls out Yondr pouches to upper-grade levels in an effort to reduce distractions in class.

Negrón confirmed that NHPS is on track to deploy Yondr phone cases on the first day of school — which is Thursday — for all city high schools and middle schools to reduce distractions, promote more engagement with class instruction, and make students less likely to fall victim to cyberbullying.

The high school rollout comes after NHPS distributed Yondr pouches for all 5th-8th-grade classrooms in March.

New Haven Academy (NHA) was the city’s first high school to pilot Yonder pouches, starting in February last academic year. Negrón described the NHA pilot as very successful.

Negrón added that in late spring last school year, high school principals engaged families and students in conversations about the introduction of Yondr, gaining feedback about the change.

Negrón said school principals are empowered to come up with specific phone-use regulations for their respective schools under the blanket districtwide policy that Yondr pouches must be used by all students. “They each know their kids and what’s going to work best,” she said about high school principals.

She said that the high school pilot and the 5th-8th grade implementation brought positive differences to schools by encouraging students to engage in more in-person discussions. She said that effect will hopefully be felt in high schools too as last year’s 8th graders, who are now entering 9th grade, bring their experience with Yondr pouches with them.

“Like the younger kids, once the students get over the fear, they’ll realize the positive impacts it has,” she concluded.

NHPS Chief of School Operations (CSO) Paul Whyte added that high schoolers who have jobs or parenting responsibilities outside of school that require them to use a phone during the day can visit their school’s main office to get permission to attend to important situations. He also encouraged parents to call the school’s main office if they need to pass along information to their children.

Additionally, an Aug. 14 NHPS building maintenance and facilities report details that wall-mounted Yondr unlocking devices have been installed at Hillhouse, Career, Metropolitan Business Academy, Co-op, and High School in the Community. That report also noted that installation of those same unlocking devices was in progress at ESUMS, Sound, and Wilbur Cross.

In a Tuesday interview with the Independent, High School in the Community Principal Nick Perrone said that his experience implementing Yondr pouches at Edgewood middle school last year will help him in his new role at the high school level.

Even though Edgewood did not have a pervasive problem of students using

phones in school, Perrone said, the introduction of Yondr pouches was “really difficult and had its challenges with vandalism” in the start.

He said he expects that this may be the case at the high school level, though he will be more prepared this time around because of his experience at Edgewood.

In the face of Yondr pouch vandalism, Perrone said the most important response was to “hold the kids accountable to the policy.” He plans to do this again this year.

He said he understands the difficulty of the transition and expects “shock” among students, though he has been informing families of the phone-free policy at HSC during orientations.

He plans to continue telling students and parents that “being off of the phones affords us the chance to have human interaction. That will only do good things for teaching and learning and building strong rapport.”

For high school students specifically, Perrone said he plans to make the policy work best by encouraging students to identify a “trusted adult” in the building who

they can go to to work out personal needs.

“We don’t just want them trying to figure it out alone in a bathroom. If a child and a trusted adult are calling their parent at the same time, they can help work through things,” he said.

In response to parent concerns about students not being able to reach help during a major emergency, Perrone said that law enforcement professionals have informed staff of the problems that come with instant communication by every student with a phone in school. That sometimes leads to 911 dispatchers receiving dozens of the same calls during emergencies.

He concluded that he hopes for the phone-free policy to improve the district’s issue with students fighting. Rather than a student “glorifying” school fights and trying to make the next viral fight video, Perrone said a no-phones policy will make it so students “will be more likely to get themselves to a safe location and report it to someone. It will hopefully help them to take action as opposed to being a bystander.”

In a separate interview Wednesday, meanwhile, Board of Education student representative and rising Career High School junior Abdellah Aly said he does not support the use of Yondr pouches in high schools at all.

“In a psychological sense, I can maybe see it useful for middle and elementary schoolers, but by the time you get to high school, your brain is somewhat developed.

It could decrease the dependency, but that role is solely on the PARENT, not a school district,” he said via email.

When it comes to safety, Aly said he believes Yondr pouches will present more of a problem than a benefit. “There are already many restrictions happening around the globe, with many countries adapting to the online safety act. That already is enough to keep phones for the use of safety, and the use of education.”

He concluded, “I am not sure on why restricting these will benefit anything.”

Over the years, Perrin served as an assistant principal and then principal at Bridgeport’s Paul Laurence Dunbar School. In November 2022, she was appointed as Bridgeport Public Schools’ interim superintendent.

Negrón said Perrin’s approach to public education is encapsulated by the motto: “Every child, every chance, every day.”

Perrin thanked the board and public Monday for entrusting her with the role. When asked about her goals for the position, Perrin told the Independent that she looks forward to supporting NHPS’ work to be aligned with its strategic plan and to “ex-

cel and move students forward.”

New Haven “reminds me so much of everything I’ve done as an educator in urban districts,” Perrin said.

She said her work will aim to support administrators in better connecting with educators. She said that NHPS has a similar demographic to Bridgeport and she is passionate about supporting New Haven’s students in underserved communities. She plans to do so by “building with resources we have” and by tapping into any and all resources that will help her to accomplish her goals.

School board member Edward Joyner commended Negrón for Perrin’s appointment. He said that NHPS “hit the lottery” with this hire.

“At the same time,” he continued, “it’s fair to note that emergencies are unpredictable, sometimes a student’s quick call or video could also help law enforcement. In addition, what if the student needed to call their parent? In accordance to the yondr law, students are held accountable for the cost if they break it, and that is LITERALLY their only option in an emergency.”

As for the argument that Yondr pouches help reduce distractions in school, Aly also acknowledged that, yes, phones are distracting — from messages to scrolling to gaming. “Students do not set a limit, even I would not. However, students argue that sometimes it needs its usage, whether that be checking their calendar, or a quick research, or playing music (which is harmless if its a downtime or writing an essay.)

It is less about distraction, and more about self regulation while still having access.”

He stressed that Yondr pouches can and should be used in elementary, and “a bit” in middle school. But in high school, “your brain is somewhat comprehensive on whether you do right or wrong. Yondr removes choice altogether. Where is the students say in this? None. People complain of NHPS leadership every day, however, where is our complaints going, where is our opinions, where is our amended rights in regards to our personal property?

I constantly work to achieve this, but, it is not a one man mission, and it will take a long time before I build a system in which students can in fact have a say in many of these litigations at the board.”

NHPS Hires New Asst. Superintendent

The Board of Education voted Monday night to hire former Bridgeport Public Schools Interim Superintendent Alyshia Perrin to serve as New Haven’s new assistant superintendent for instructional leadership and school improvement.

The school board took that unanimous vote during its latest regular meeting at King/Robinson School.

Perrin’s appointment officially begins on Tuesday. Her starting salary is $165,000.

Monday’s vote comes roughly a month after the previous occupant of this same assistant superintendent role, Paul Whyte, was transferred into a new position called chief of school operations.

At past school board meetings, some community members — including the city’s teachers union president — urged the district to get rid of this assistant superintendent role once it became empty, given the district’s budget struggles.

District leaders defended the position as necessary for helping oversee schools, evaluate principals, advise in the implementation of policy, and advocate with central office for the needs of schools, among other responsibilities.

Perrin is now one of New Haven Public Schools’ (NHPS) four assistant superintendents. The district’s other three assistant superintendents are Keisha Redd-Hannans, Viviana Camacho, and Kristina DeNegre.

With Marcel , Coach Solo nodded his head while watching his steady and focused punches. “Don’t forget to put your hands up,” Coach Solo said while demonstrating to Marcel to keep his two fists nearly in line with his eyes.

Coach Solo told the Independent Tuesday that as kid, he often hung out with his peers who were bullied. “I protected them because it’s important for everyone to feel included,” he said.

Which is why he made sure to host Tuesday’s adaptive boxing lessons at the same time as when he coaches his summer boxers.

While suited up in a pair of boxing gloves, 19-year-old Marcel Carr and 18-year-old Bill Moore Jr. practiced their focus, coordination, and overall strength by punching bags and tossing a weighted ball back and forth through a new recreational opportunity offered for the two nonverbal autistic teens.

That was the scene during a recent halfhour adaptive boxing lesson at Get ‘Em Boy boxing on Orchard Street. The 12week program is the newest collaborative effort by partners Coach Solomon Maye and the nonprofit Legacy Developmental Services, looking to support disabled New Haven youth in need of evening recreation that meets them where they’re at.

Maye, also known as Coach Solo, runs the Get ‘Em Boy Boxing gym. Get ‘Em Boy was approached by Legacy Developmental Service founder Brenda Moore this summer with a partnership opportunity to offer afternoon lessons to youth like her son Bill, who in the past struggled to find the right fit for athletic programming that challenged him while also recognizing his support needs.

On Tuesday, Bill and Marcel worked with Coach Solo alongside his other afternoon boxing program, which saw young New Haveners sparr in the gym ring.

They began warming up on two trampolines, jumping to get prepared for the half hour of coordination-focused movement.

Each time Bill and Marcel heard the gym’s buzzer go off, they took a 30-second break then got back to warming up.

Coach Solo encouraged them along the way and occasionally redirected them to the task at hand. Next, each put on a pair of gloves and headed to two punching bags.

Coach Solo first demonstrated for both of them individually, telling them to “look at my hand” as he threw a punch at the bag.

He focused Tuesday on getting the two teens to be as consistent as possible with the task.

Marcel threw a punch at his bag with a smile and then let out a cheer when Coach Solo told him, “There you go, just like that.”

Coach Solo first watched as Bill focused less on punching and instead ran circles around his bag. “Stamina and endurance is important,” he said before joining Bill in running circles around the bag.

Once the two followed each other around the bag several times, Coach Solo then suggested instead of running clockwise, they switch to running counter-clockwise. Bill agreed and the two ran in the opposite direction. After switching between directions for a minute, Coach Solo made another suggestion.

“Let’s get your hands going while moving,” he said, while throwing punches at the bag during brief breaks from running circles around it. Bill joined in, throwing a few punches at the bag then changing running directions.

“They don’t need to be separated because we all need to be active,” he said. “And when you know you can be confident and physical, it gives a sense of independence.”

While Bill and Marcel practiced Tuesday, Bill’s parents and founders of Legacy Developmental Services, Brenda Moore and Bill Moore Sr., watched on the sidelines. “We don’t typically find places that take the load off of us because they see him as such a challenge,” Brenda said.

This year, Legacy Developmental Services introduced the Empower Rec Boxing initiative in addition to other services like sign language classes and a coming Christmas play put on by disabled youth.

The organization aims to provide recreation and programming to high-needs youth with disabilities to provide a social, physical, and mental outlet.

lack of social interactions with peers. “So many age out and graduate to sofa” because of the lack of accessible programs like Tuesday’s, she said.

She added that the boxing program was chosen to show that young adults like Bill and Marcel are just as capable if given the chance. So far, boxing has significantly helped Bill improve his coordination while walking down stairs and his ability to better focus on tasks.

The Moores hope to partner with other organizations in the city that are willing to offer skill development to youth with disabilities. “They have to see our vision of seeing a real future for them,” she said.

Bill Moore Sr. added that he enjoys seeing that his son is able to persevere through hard tasks to see that they pay off in the end. “He needs a push just like any kid,” he said.

Brittany Faison, the mother of Marcel and a Legacy board member, said the boxing program helps her feel hopeful for Marcel’s future. She said it has helped give him a weekly outlet to be as hyper as he likes.

“I wish stuff like this was more in our face,” she said, emphasizing the need to support youth on all levels of the disability spectrum.

She added that in the past, Marcel was a part of a Special Olympics program, but at times wasn’t included in activities because of the additional work it can take to get his focus.

“You have to adapt and meet on their level. Marcel needs an individual plan for him to build on his strengths and needs,” she said. “This is paving the way for families to be hopeful.”

Albertus Magnus Tuition Discount OK’d For Housing Authority Staff

Elm City Communities has teamed up with Albertus Magnus to provide a 15 percent tuition discount for New Haven public housing authority employees who attend the local Catholic university.

The housing authority’s board voted in support of that reduced tuition program Tuesday during its latest monthly meeting, held at the agency’s headquarters at 360 Orange St. Elm City Communities staff enrolled in Albertus Magnus’ associate’s degree, bachelor’s degree, or master’s degree in professional and graduate studies programs are eligible for the discount. (Elm City Communities is the umbrella organization that includes the Housing Authority of New Haven and its related development and property management arms, Glendower Group and 360 Management.)

laboration also provides opportunities for professional development, engagement, participation, and career fairs and access to student internships,” she said Albertus Magnus College is a private Catholic university located in Prospect Hill. Without the discount, full-time students pay $41,518 for the 2025 – 2026 academic year and part-time students are charged $1,730 per credit.

The Board of Commissioners unanimously adopted the resolution. Elm City Communities President Shenae Draughn and commissioners Alberta Witherspoon, Danya Keene, Kevin Alvarez, and William Kilpatrick attended the meeting.

Draughn commended the program as a “great opportunity” to support Elm City Communities’ team members.

“We’re excited about this partnership with Albertus Magnus College because it provides our employees with meaningful opportunities for professional growth and continuing education, while also investing in their long-term success,” Draughn emailed the Independent.

Alders Advance “Vision 2034”

By 2034, Sana Salimi will be in her early twenties. And her city will be more walkable, housing-dense, and resilient to climate change — if all goes according to the 212-page comprehensive plan she helped produce.

Salimi, a 14-year-old rising senior at Common Ground High School, found herself before a panel of alders at City Hall on Wednesday evening to convey that future vision of New Haven.

She joined City Plan Director Laura Brown and Assistant Director of Comprehensive Planning Esther Rose-Wilen at a Board of Alders Community Development Committee meeting to present a draft of “Vision 2034,” the comprehensive plan that the city must produce once a decade under state law.

The committee members unanimously voted to recommend that their colleagues on the full Board of Alders support the plan.

The comprehensive plan, according to the Vision 2034 website, is “a blueprint of the city’s vision for the future, and a policy guide for achieving planning goals” intended to serve as a “decision-making guide.”

After publishing a draft in June and leading public hearings through the City Plan Commission, the City Plan department is seeking input from the Board of Alders and the Southern Connecticut Regional Council Of Governments, among other groups. Feedback from those entities as well as members of the public may lead to revisions. Eventually, around October or November, the document will return to the City Plan Commission for a final approval.

and values rather than step-by-step plans.

The numerous aims mentioned in the draft of Vision 2034 (among too many to list) include: • Increasing the supply of housing and especially deeply affordable housing.

• Finding new purposes for vacant and dilapidated buildings across the city.

• Making city infrastructure more walkable, more accessible to disabled residents, and more resilient to climate change.

• Removing parking minimums for new developments.

• Supporting local economic growth in

sectors like biotech, healthcare, and culinary arts.

Salimi was one of eight New Haven high school students hired as paid outreach coordinators on the comprehensive plan’s Youth Leadership Team for 18 months.

She said she isn’t typically the biggest fan of public speaking, but while presenting to alders on Wednesday, she felt proud of the planning process she helped steward.

“Today is the day we brought all our hard work together,” Salimi said after the meeting.

“Usually, youth are not heard that much,” she said.

She and her fellow Youth Leadership Team members were tasked with encouraging their peers to contribute their input to the plan — part of an extensive community engagement process baked into the plan’s creation.

The Youth Leadership Team program was cut short when President Donald Trump’s administration suddenly paused one of its funding sources in February 2025, an Environmental Protection Agency Environmental Justice Collaborative Problem Solving grant.

But within the year and a half that the program operated, Salimi and her peers tabled at festivals, heard input at public meetings, and brainstormed alongside city leaders.

She and her peers organized two game nights and operated “slime tables” at community fairs, using the activities as an opportunity to connect with other teens and kids — and to start conversations about what they hope to see in their city.

They gathered input from a total of 500 kids and teens across the city. According to the draft plan, “the top priority for young people in the City was access to efficient, safe, clean, and affordable transportation.”

Salimi, who also served on the Comprehensive Plan’s steering committee, said she’s most excited about the plan’s economic development goals, including an aim of spurring more job opportunities in the city.

“I’m getting paid through this,” she said of the Youth Leadership Team role. That income helped her understand the impact of the various economic development goals on a more concrete, personal level.

Hosted by Mixsho and Six Figure DJs at the legendary Lotta Studio in New Haven’s vibrant Westville arts district, the night brought together nearly 50 DJs from across the country for an unforgettable evening of music, community, and culture.

The turnout was nothing short of amazing. DJs came from all over the tri-state area—Brooklyn, Queens, the Bronx, New Jersey, and Philly—and even as far as Texas. Connecticut’s own cities—New Haven, Hamden, Meriden, Hartford, Waterbury—showed up strong, proving that this state has a deep and diverse DJ scene ready to be seen and heard.

When DJs walked through the doors, they weren’t just there to watch. They were invited to sign up on the spot for a live 10 to 15 minute set. Each DJ had the freedom to scratch, blend, drop mashups, or showcase their own unique style. It wasn’t about catering to a crowd—it was about DJs playing for DJs. This is what made the night so special: instead of the usual gig where a DJ entertains a crowd under contract, The MixOff was for the DJs themselves. It was about artistry, experimentation, and letting go in a room full of peers who understood the craft.

Lotta Studio, known as a creative hub for photography, art, and community, transformed into the heartbeat of Connecticut’s DJ culture. For five hours straight, turntables didn’t stop spinning.

The energy was unmatched—supportive, safe, and electric.

What stood out most was the diversity. The youngest DJ in the room was just 17 years old, while the oldest was in his mid-fifties. Genres spanned across house, hip-hop, reggae, Afrobeats, and open format—a true showcase of how wide-ranging and powerful DJ culture is today.

The event wasn’t just about music. It was about connection. For many, the DJ world can feel isolated—you grind alone, build your skills, and search for your tribe. But that night, the tribe came together. Black and Brown men and women, alongside people of all races, all ages, and all genders, were welcomed and celebrated. The room was filled with support, networking, and energy as creatives exchanged contacts, shared stories, and encouraged one another.

Youth Day Block Party Brings Out The Community

As author Winsome Bingham turned the pages of her book Fish Fry Friday, a crowd of pint-sized listeners followed her voice, eyes glued to the colorful illustrations on each page.

At the end of the story, four-year old Zahmya Knight walked away with the biggest surprise of all: a signed copy of her own, and a chance to talk to the author herself.

Slime-making, cupcake-decorating, author visits and rhythmic drums filled the air at Saturday’s Edgewood Youth Day Block Party, held on Edgewood Avenue between Winthrop and Sherman Avenues. As in years past, the event was organized by Dwight Alder Frank Douglass Jr., New Haven Board of Alders President Tyisha Walker-Myers, and Edgewood Alder Evette Hamilton, with support from a number of community partners like Possible Futures, the Greater Dwight Development Corporation, and the Greater New Haven NAACP among many others.

It also marked the third annual Maternal Health Hub, a collaboration with Golden Radiance Village that included resources for birthing people, partners and babies from lactation support to prenatal and postpartum services that are culturally responsive and made by and for Black and Brown mothers.

Other collaborators included the New Haven Coalition for Active Transportation (NCAT), the Youth and Recreation Department (YARD), the Livable City Initiative (LCI), the CT Cowboys and others.

“We just want to thank everybody for coming out today and supporting,” Hamilton said, addressing the crowd.

“We have lots of food, a lot of fun, entertainment for everyone. No one pays for anything out here today. This is a free day, community day.”

Douglass seconded this theme.

Alongside preparing his “famous sausage and peppers” for people to eat, he said that his favorite part of the day was fostering social connectedness and bringing Dwight, Edgewood, and West River residents together.

“The best part of this whole day is leading up to this day,” he said.

“We work so hard, the whole crew, everybody that’s out here, all the volunteers … So many people come out and get involved with this. Once we put the word out, they’re asking all year ‘When are we having our festival?’”

Dwight—that’s Ward 2—on the Board of Alders, he said that he considers all of New Haven his responsibility.

“I’m born and raised in New Haven, 72 years, and I love New Haven. I wouldn’t trade this place for anything in the world,” he said.

Bingham, too, is no stranger to the magic of the Elm City; this year was her second time participating in the block party. Despite being based in Ledyard, she’ll always make the trek to New Haven.

She attributed her fondness and loyalty to the event to her longstanding collaboration with Lauren Anderson, the community-minded founder of the bookspace Possible Futures. The fondness is mutual: Bingham’s The Walk has also become a favorite for bookspace read-alouds, including last year on Election Day.

also spoke on the power of Possible Futures and events like Bingham’s sun-soaked sidewalk reading. She pointed to how any moment, no matter how small, can be used to practice literacy.

“When we’re out in play spaces like this, there’s literacy all around us.

Like, for example, with my daughter, she’s still learning how to spell her name and she often forgets that there’s an ‘H’ in her name,” she said. “So, like, right now, how the tents have letters and stuff on them, so I’ll be like, ‘Do you see any letters from your name in that tent?’”

Blocked off with traffic cones and garbage cans, meanwhile, was the now-annual (and beloved) bike rodeo obstacle course. Littered with tiny cones, cyclists were tasked with maneuvering past the obstacles to reach the other side of the street, all while maintaining their balance and practicing bike safety by wearing a helmet.

Overseeing the course was NCAT Assistant Instructor Giulia Gambale.

NCAT offers bike lessons for adults and kids, teaching participants bike safety and general maneuvering skills.

“The bike rodeo is really exciting because you never know who’s going to come in and what level they’re at,” Gambale said.

While this was the organization’s third time hosting a tent at the block party, Gambale said that it was her first time helping at this event. In recent months, she’s been at previous block parties in Beaver Hills and has taught lessons at New Haven schools.

For Gambale, nothing beats when a student masters their balancing act and finally finds their stride.

“When they get those few first pedals in and they start riding on their own, it’s like an immediate smile on their face,” she said. “It’s so fun.”

By 3:15, 21 kids had signed up for bike lessons. Gambale estimated that 40 to 50 kids would sign up by the end of the event at 5 p.m..

In just a flash, the storytime where Bingham had sat turned into a drum circle, inviting in participants of all ages. One by one, attendees joined the group and added to the rhythm by banging drums. Snacking on a chocolate cupcake, Zahmya couldn’t help but be lulled back by the beat, her mom watching the show right along with her. “[I have] just gratitude for events like this where the community can come together, especially when things are so heavy in reality,” Knight said.

“I look forward to doing this [event],” Bingham said. “I live quite far away, but I really like how, especially Lauren, how she opens up her bookspace to the community.

That collective community and that support within the community — I will always support that.”

From Haddocks Crossroads To New Haven

Sean Hardy’s closest relatives came to visit him in the hospital after he had surgery. He had so many close relatives that the hospital had to limit how many could see him.

More than 100 Hardy/Mills family relatives were ready to help Hardy through a rough moment in his life. The way he shows up for them.

Hardy, a New Haven educator, told the story Tuesday during a discussion on WNHH FM’s “Dateline New Haven” about an upcoming event he’s helping to organize: A Sept. 14 service and 40th anniversary get-together at St. Matthew UFWB Church on Dixwell Avenue for the Connecticut chapter of the Mills Family Reunion Committee.

Hardy helped form that chapter 40 years ago as a teen. He and relatives brought together hundreds of New Haveners who descend from Roland (aka Rolin) Mills, a property owner born in 1828 in Greenville, Pitt County, N.C. Mills and his descendants raised children in homes some of them still occupy at Haddocks Crossroads in Greenville.

They became one of the largest connected families in town, with wellknown surnames like Mills and Hardy and Cox and Dawson and Moye.

The New Haven chapter organizes charter buses for the local descendants to travel every other year for a reunion in Greenville. They still visit Mills descendants living along the crossroads.

“You go down to the corner store, and everybody is your cousin.” They gather at the homes for feasts of dishes

He was born a “free mulatto”; he married Caroline Brooks, who was born a slave, then lived on the Brooks family farm. One of their eight sons, Arnold, was Sean Hardy’s great-great grandfather. Also a farmer and landowner, he and his wife had enough money to deed land to the Pitt County school system for the construction of a school.

Arnold’s son Kelly was Sean Hardy’s great grandfather. He started out farming in the Haddocks Crossroads community, where he helped found

like collard greens and macaroni and cheese. On the other years, they organize gatherings here in town, like the one on Sept. 14.

Hardy shares his genealogical research and photos at those gatherings.

He began doing his own research long before websites like Ancestry.com helped hatch a grassroots movement of family tree creators.

On “Dateline,” Hardy described his own direct line to Roland Mills, who owned farmland along the crossroads.

St. Stephen’s Episcopal Church with his cousins. One of Kelly and Henrietta Mills’ children was Sean Hardy’s grandmother Delphia Mills, who married a man named Noah Hardy, who besides farming served as a deacon and moderator at a Free Will Baptist Church.

Their son James Hardy grew up in Greenville, then came to New Haven, where he found work at G&O Manufacturing plus a second part-time job at the Hospital of St. Raphael. He came north with his wife Eradell (Carr) Hardy, who worked as a licensed beautician as well as at Grace New Haven Hospital, while earning a master’s in special education. They raised Sean and the rest of the family in the Eastern Circle development, then on Vernon Street in the Hill. (The family includes descendants of children Roland Mills had with a second partner, Ann Eliza Mills Corbett.)

As the world become more atomized, as people grew less likely to know their neighbors, let alone their cousins, the Mills descendants in New Haven remained family in the broadest sense.

“We really have a tight connection.

When it’s good, when it’s not good, when we’re struggling, when we’re not struggling, we maintain and we try to keep together,” Hardy said.

That togetherness will be celebrated at the Sept. 14 gathering and service, which will be led by St. Matthews Senior Pastor Kevin Hardy — who, of course, traces his own lineage back to Roland Mills.

6 Honored At Community Economic Development Summit

That was the theme of the third annual Community Economic Development Summit at SCSU. Staged in collaboration with the Black Wall Street Festival, the event included an inaugural awards ceremony for “unsung architects of community impact.”

Charles Warner Jr., delivering the opening statement, invoked the recent efforts of those in Tulsa, Oklahoma, where the Greenwood district, also known as Black Wall Street, thrived as a commercial, cultural, and religious hub before its wholesale destruction, known as the “Tulsa Massacre,” during one weekend in May 1921.

“The people there are attempting to reclaim their history and redesign their future, and so are we here,” said Warner, the local historian, public school administrator, and Connecticut Freedom Trail chair, during last week’s ceremony.

“Our awards recipients are all doing their part, so get to know these people,” said co-emcee Arden Santana, before asking if anyone knew about the Mudhole.

Among the crowd, a dozen or so hands went up.

The formerly blighted area on the Farmington Canal Trail, she said, “is now a communal gathering space for not only people but bees, butterflies, and birds, with a book box, a water fountain, and a huge turtle reminding us that work, slow, steady, and collective, is the key to sus-

tainable community development initiatives.”

The woman who spearheaded the transformation, neighborhood activist Doreen Abubakar, received the Frederick F. Smith Community Restoration Award, named for the New Haven physician who created the annual Freddy Fixer parade as a cleanup and beautification campaign.

“Her leadership brings life, dignity, and lasting impact to neighborhoods other-

wise overlooked,” said Santana.

Co-emcee Hafeeza Turé spotlighted another community architect, Stetson Library branch manager Diane X. Brown.

“Diane’s leadership has strengthened access to education, history, and cultural learning as tools for self-sufficiency.”

For her stewardship of More Amour Boutique, the Chapel Street business featuring statement pieces from independent designers around the world, as well

as support of women-led initiatives, Kim Poole was recognized with an economic empowerment award.

“Kim’s vision and enterprise build platforms for others while shaping a legacy of wealth, independence and style,” Turé said.

In a nod to rising leaders, Kobéy Smith, entrepreneur, mental health activist, and podcaster, was honored as a young trailblazer. And for her work as a “behind-

the-scenes builder shaping the lives of entrepreneurs from the ideation to launch,” Turé said, Jahkeeva Morgan, director of The Lab at ConnCORP, took home an award named for civil rights strategist and grass roots organizer Ella Baker.

Then there was Marcus Harvin, the founder of Newhallville Fresh Starts who, Santana said, “embodied the spirit” of the revolutionary scholar, activist, and co-founder of the Black Panther Party, Huey P. Newton, through Fresh Starts’ food and sustenance initiatives.

Keynote speaker Kebra Smith-Bolden spoke of the obstacles she faced while preparing to open LIT New Haven, the city’s first Black-woman-owned cannabis dispensary.

“There were delays, regulatory taint, the pressure of being a Black woman in cannabis, the whispers that ‘she’s not good enough and she’s not ready’,” she said to a transfixed audience. “But I had to remind myself that I come from builders who literally created something out of nothing. I come from survivors who overcame the atrocities of chattel slavery, Jim Crow, and the Civil Rights era.

“And so I stayed the course. I employed people who had been counted out, some formerly incarcerated, some recovering, some simply needing a second chance. I built a business, a space where healing meets opportunity, rooted in purpose, just like they did in Tulsa, and that’s the spirit of Black Wall Street I want us to hold onto tonight.”

Cedric Saves The Day With Back-To-School Burger Buy

When New Haven Public Schools (NHPS) Youth Development Coordinator Cedric Robinson heard the district couldn’t afford to give out free food at this year’s annual Back to School rally, he spent nearly $2,000 of his own money to make sure families are fed at Thursday’s event.

On Wednesday morning, Robinson took a trip to Restaurant Depot in Orange to buy 600 hot dogs, 600 burgers, 1,200 buns, and 900 bottles of water to step up and take care of the district’s families from behind the scenes.

Kermit Carolina, the supervisor of NHPS’ youth and family department, said due to the district’s budget deficit, NHPS was unable to provide free food for its Back to School rally event scheduled to take place on Thursday from 2 – 5 p.m. at Bowen Field.

“He truly is one of our city’s greatest unsung heroes,” Carolina said of Robinson.

Robinson’s work as Mauro Sheridan School’s youth coordinator is a second career he began 20 years ago. Before that, he worked for 20 years as a corrections officer.

supplies and the chance to connect with community partners and resources for after school programming and additional family support services.

In a phone interview Wednesday, Robinson told the Independent he has paid out of pocket to support Turkey drives, Christmas toy giveaways, and more to give back to the community. “I’m just

a kid from the hood who can give back now and so I do,” he said.

Robinson does so without the need for recognition because it’s what he was taught by his parents and the village that helped him throughout his life.

Robinson began working for NHPS 20 years ago after being a corrections officer because he noticed that the people

entering the corrections system were getting younger and younger and younger.

“I saw where the problem was,” he said.

“Women can do anything but being an influence to a man can be difficult.”

And so he began his now 20-year journey working with NHPS youth who need a role model and father figure. At Mauro Sheridan, Robinson works daily with students who are chronically absent or are frequently suspended.

“I promised myself if I get fortunate enough to give back, then I would. And I have the resources now so I do that,” he said.

Robinson grew up in Alabama and moved to New Haven when he was 8 years old. “New Haven raised me along with my parents and so I’m just giving back to all the people who gave me sneakers growing up and kept me on the right path,” he added.

He concluded that the greatest reward for giving back to the community is putting a smile on someone’s face.

In total, Robinson spent $1,707.27 out of pocket to provide food for Thursday’s event.

The Youth and Family Department’s team, Robinson said, “is pointing New Haven in the right direction.”

CT Regulators Warn of ‘Rate Shock’ as Health Insurers Seek Double-Digit Premium Hikes for 2026

Connecticut residents who rely on the state’s Affordable Care Act marketplace and small group health plans may soon face sharp increases in 2026 premiums, with insurers seeking double-digit hikes that regulators and lawmakers say could rival recent utility “rate shocks.”

Insurance Commissioner Andrew Mais laid out what’s at stake at Monday’s Insurance Department hearing.

Seven carriers submitted eight filings affecting about 224,000 residents, including 70,000 small business employees.

The companies seeking increases include Anthem Health Plans, CTCare Benefits Inc., Oxford Health Plans/ Insurance Inc., and UnitedHealthcare Insurance Co. Together, they cover the slice of the population that is too young for Medicare, earns too much for Medicaid, and often falls into the working- and middle-class families least able to absorb another surge in household bills.

The requests range from 5.9% to 26.1%, averaging 17.1% for individuals and 13.1% for small groups. About one-third of enrollees are between ages 55 and 64, a group already paying some of the steepest premiums in the market.

The increases don’t apply to the majority of Connecticut residents covered by employer-sponsored insurance regulated under federal ERISA law, but they could hit freelancers, self-employed workers and small businesses particularly hard.

Mais warned that the numbers on the table don’t even include the potential expiration of enhanced federal subsidies at the end of 2025. If Congress doesn’t act, carriers estimate premiums would rise another 3.5% to 6.8%. For many households, the loss of those subsidies would amount to an average of $1,700 per enrollee, affecting roughly 140,000 Connecticut residents who now receive assistance.

For a family of three, officials said, the loss would equal about half a month’s income.

James Michel, CEO of Access Health Connecticut, painted an even starker picture. He said the combination of federal policy changes—including the Trump administration’s new Medicaid rules, a recent HHS “Marketplace Integrity and Affordability” regulation, and the expiration of premium tax credits—could push 30% to 35% of exchange customers off coverage by 2034.

One Fairfield family, Michel noted, currently pays $991 a month with subsidies. If those subsidies disappear, the premium would spike to $4,140—a 307% increase.

Hospitals told regulators they face relentless inflation, supply chain costs, workforce shortages, and prescription drug spikes, but argued that the underlying problem is government underpayment.

“If government payers don’t pay their fair share, there is no other way to balance the books but to shift costs to the commercial sector,” said Mark Schaefer, vice president of system innovation and financing at the Connecticut Hospital Association.

With Republican Medicaid eligibility changes threatening to push 100,000 to 200,000 people off the rolls in coming years, hospitals warned of a surge in uncompensated emergency care that would again land on private payers and their customers.

Insurers countered that they are caught in the middle. Anthem, which covers more than 1.2 million people in Connecticut across all markets, cited surging demand for behavioral health and addiction services, inflation in both medical and drug costs, and hospitals leveraging consolidation to extract above-benchmark rates.

Smaller community hospitals, meanwhile, are demanding outsized increases to stabilize finances, further pushing rates upward.

Pharmacy benefit managers sought to shift the focus.

emphasized that PBMs don’t set drug prices—manufacturers do—and stressed that 98.9% of rebates negotiated in Connecticut last year were passed back to health plans. Hollmire cautioned lawmakers against attempting state-level drug price controls, warning manufacturers would likely sue.

The Office of Health Strategy reported insurers’ cost trends for 2026 between 8% and 10%, far above the state’s new 2.8% benchmark through 2030. Mais acknowledged what he called a “structural mismatch” between what families can afford and what the system demands.

State Sen. Jorge Cabrera, D-Hamden, co-chair of the Insurance and Real Estate Committee, compared the increases to utility rate shocks: “Health insurance premiums for the working class and small businesses have become the new electric rate shock. It’s that bad.”

For Connecticut, the overall impact is a mounting multi-million dollar financial loss: higher premiums for tens of thousands, reduced federal aid, and more residents pushed into the ranks of the uninsured.

The Insurance Department expects to issue final rate decisions in early December, but the message from Monday’s hearing was clear—families are bracing for bills rivaling mortgage payments, while insurers, hospitals, and PBMs continue to point fingers over who shoulders the blame.

Elderly renters with the Park Ridge Tenants Union hosted a pizza party Wednesday to uplift a newly formed tenants union at a senior apartment building in Detroit that is owned by the same corporate landlord that owns Park Ridge.

At the same time, they noticed that their shared landlord’s website is no longer available for public view.

The Park Ridge Tenants Union put together that party Wednesday at the 72-unit complex at 10 Hard St. They were celebrating Tuesday’s announcement 600-plus miles away of the creation of the River Pointe Tower Tenants Union at a 122-unit building on the east side of Detroit.

Both Park Ridge and River Pointe are owned by affiliates of the New York-based landlord Capital Realty Group.

On Wednesday, Park Ridge tenants convened to read and watch news coverage of the unionizing efforts in Detroit.

They also noticed that Capital Realty Group’s website, which was formerly open to the public, now requires a username and password to access.

“As of this morning, we noticed that their website has been closed,” Connecticut Tenants Union Vice President Luke Melonakos said about Capital Realty Group’s site.

Melonakos added, “Their strategy so far seems to be hiding from the publicity and kind of waving it away and trying to say ‘nothing to see here.’”

The party took place two weeks to the day after the formation of the Park Ridge Tenants Union amidst senior renters’ concerns about a faulty boiler, security in the parking lot, slow response times to maintenance requests, dirty carpets in common spaces, an extra rental charge for live-in aides, and rules for how residents use their apartments.

On the same day of the union’s announcement, union members travelled to the Capital Realty Group’s Spring Valley, N.Y. headquarters, only to be redirected to New Jersey, then back to New York, where they claimed to see company employees close their blinds and hide behind their desks.

but has yet to address residents’ pressing concerns regarding boiler and plumbing issues, tenants union members said on Wednesday.

Gerene Freeman, the vice president of Park Ridge Tenants Union, said the boiler “sounds like it’s going to blow up.” Freeman said she was the first tenant to move in after Capital Realty Group purchased the property eight years ago.

The federally subsidized West Hills complex houses seniors and people with disabilities. U.S. Sen. Richard Blumenthal announced last week that he plans to send a letter to Capital Realty Group calling on them to listen to tenant concerns.

Evelyn Randall, a member of the Park Ridge Tenants Union, said on Wednesday that last year she woke up to sewage overflowing from her toilet and bathtub.

“It was scary because I had never dealt with anything like that in my lifetime,”

said Randall. She stayed with her sister in a different apartment in New Haven while maintenance cleaned up the mess.

“It wasn’t like anyone from administration approached me at all about anything,” said Randall.

Randall served as a union steward while working for a health maintenance organization (HMO). “We got a lot of things accomplished,” said Randall. She saw wage increases and educational enrichment programs as a result of the union. Given this experience, she hopes for positive changes with Park Ridge’s housing conditions.

In addition to the Park Ridge complex, Capital Realty Group also owns Sunset Ridge Apartments in New Haven. The national news outlet In These Times published earlier this year an investigation about how residents developed respiratory problems or severe allergies due to untreated mold in Sunset Ridge. tenants have not yet unionized.

“I’ve been here for 20 years, and it was so different,” Park Ridge Tenants Union member Harold Reid said on Wednesday.

Before Capital Realty Group purchased the property, Reid said, “It was wonderful, it was family style.” He knew the landlord and his kids and felt heard.

“Tenants are going up against not a local landlord that they can go talk to and have a relationship with, but a corporate entity that hides from them,” said Melonakos. “And that’s why tenants are compelled to organize, because one by one they have not been able to get results.”

A representative of the landlord did not respond to a request for comment by the publication time of this article.

a broader effort to include community members in the planning process.

City Plan staff, led by Rose-Wilen, hosted meetings that drew hundreds of participants alongside consulting firms including FHI Studio.

On top of those larger meetings, the city hired 10 adult “Community Navigators” to host gatherings and independently reach out to residents across the city.

Some of those gatherings involved outside-the-box, often tactile methods of helping residents visualize how their city could change — from walking tours to art-making to building blocks to post-it notes on maps.

Additionally, the planners enlisted the help of six open-membership “co-creation teams” focused on specific subjects, ranging from the environment to the arts.

And they garnered input from 1,600 respondents to an online survey.

Fereshteh Ganjavi, one of the community navigators, described the plan as “full of love, not just data.”

Brown noted that the city is still gathering feedback from community members about the draft. “We want you to feel confident that this truly reflects the needs and desires of residents,” she said.

Rose-Wilen argued that the community input process was meaningful in and of itself. “It wasn’t just a means to an end,” she said. “It brought community members together in a way that has lasting impact.”

“It sounds like you went out to many different areas in the city,” said Community Development Chair and Hill Alder Carmen Rodriguez.

Dwight Alder Frank Douglass asked about the city’s progress on its goals from the most recent comprehensive plan, “Vision 2025.”

Rose-Wilen said that “a majority” of the goals have been “initiated or completed,” though “in some cases, priorities shifted or funding was expected and didn’t come.”

Vision 2025 lacked the kind of specific, time-bound, and measurable goals that would be needed to truly assess its effectiveness, added Brown.

She said that once this new plan is approved, the city will work across departments to make each goal more concrete — identifying, for example, a specific amount of affordable housing units to bring in.

Maria-Threese Serana, an incoming biology teacher at Co-Op High School, and Alex Contreras-Montesano, a new student-teacher at Family Academy of Multilingual Exploration (FAME), walked along Grand Avenue with more than a dozen of their future colleagues.

They smelled Mexican sweet breads, learned about Spanish-English translation services, and encountered a wealth of other food, culture, art, and community health resources, all as part of a tour designed to encourage new city teachers to tap into the neighborhoods that surround their schools and students.

That was the scene Friday during the final day of New Haven Public Schools’ (NHPS) annual New Educator Academy orientation.

Eighteen NHPS teachers joined Friday’s walking tour of Fair Haven, which was led by Fair Haven resident and Elm City Montessori Magnet Resource Teacher David Weinreb.

The group consisted of educators who, on the first day of the new school year this Thursday, will be teaching at such schools as Wilbur Cross, Benjamin Jepson, Fair Haven, and Clinton Avenue.

Weinreb pointed out spots that open early in the morning that educators can grab food at, like La Tapatia Bakery at 309 Grand Ave. During a stop at Fair Haven Community Health Care, the teachers learned about the clinic’s close ties with schools to help families keep their children healthy and in class.

“Whether you have a clinic in the school, we are here for you,” FHCHC Chief Advancement Officer Maggie Moffett told Friday’s group.

While walking down Grand Avenue, the educators took note of the many food offerings and the smell of fresh-baked goods that wafted over the loud and bustling corridor.

Weinreb pointed to businesses like El Rey Azteca, Salsa’s Authentic Mexican Restaurant, and several barber shops on the strip.

Clifford Beers Community Care Center staff informed the educators about the center’s partnership with NHPS to provide wraparound services for families and intervention supports.

Weinreb encouraged the new educators to figure out what parent engagement resources look like at each of their schools.

“Sometimes the resources exist in your school, sometimes it doesn’t, and if not you may have to connect families to resources,” he said.

Grand Avenue Special Services District Manager Maria Alejandra Hawke was working with a group of Yale student volunteers in cleaning up Grand Avenue sidewalks and bus stops Friday. She told the educators, “Whatever you need, Grand Avenue has it,” from Ecuador-

ian and Peruvian food to hair cuts and a health clinic.

The group’s next stop was in front of Fair Haven Middle School, which Weinreb described as a Fair Haven nexus because of the school, library, and headquarters for Junta For Progressive Action.

The educators stopped to learn about the Fair Haven Branch Library’s resources like library cards for all educators and for all students of NHPS, research databases, meeting place opportunities, and English and Spanish learning clubs.

NHPS grad-turned-Junta staffer Melissa Rodriguez encouraged the educators Friday to reach out to Junta, including for classroom partnerships. Junta offers translation services, support filling out passport applications, a youth empowerment program for student internships, and after-school arts programming, among other services. Rodriguez said Junta is always open to collaboration with educators.

While headed to the group’s final stop at the Grand Avenue Bridge, Weinreb pointed out FHCHC’s Grand Pharmacy that offers low-cost pharmacy services to all.

When Fair Haven Alder and Fair Haven School staffer Frankie Redente heard that one educator in Friday’s group was headed to Fair Haven Middle, he encouraged him to be ready for the school’s kids vs. staff basketball game.

Joining Friday’s tour was Maria-Threese Serana, who will be starting a new role this year as a biology teacher at Cooperative Arts High School. She previously worked for NHPS since 2015 as a long-term substitute teacher and as a paraprofessional.

Serana has five courses left until she completes her educator certification at Sacred Heart. Until then, she has a durational shortage area permit (DSAP) to teach for NHPS. Last school year Serana was a longterm science sub at Cross. She said she looks forward to trying out a smaller school and sticking with the high school grades. In the past she was an elementary sub teacher at Roberto, Conte, and East Rock schools. She’s also worked as a special education paraprofessional.

She said Friday that the Fair Haven tour inspired her to begin brainstorming several science- and community-focused lessons for her classroom this year. From the group’s stop at Save the Sound’s Haven and Exchange Street Park to learning more about Fair Haven Community Health Care, Serana said she hopes to teach her students the importance of being connected to their community to pursue lifelong learning.

She imagines a possible project for her students this year focused on environmental pollution in Fair Haven and the impacts on bodily health. Her goal is to make “what they’re learning in school help them in the outside world so they

feel more motivated to pursue their education. It won’t just be about getting the grade, then that’s it.”

She said over the years of working for NHPS she’s seen a lack of community ties from educators who don’t always live in New Haven. “It’s critical for all teachers to see and feel our neighborhoods to best teach the kids,” she said.

Friday’s tour she made her feel the closest she’s ever been to Fair Haven despite living in New Haven for the past 20 years.

She said she hopes the district will further develop community connections to improve schools and learning.

Connection to resources, partners, and community — as demonstrated by Friday’s tour — made her feel more supported as a teacher rather than overwhelmed about not knowing the right services to connect families with, which is a feeling she’s had in the past. “I’ve felt this many times when you don’t know what to do and your kids need help,” she said.

Also in attendance at Friday’s tour was incoming student-teacher Alex Contreras-Montesano, who will be working in special education at FAME this school year.

While walking down Grand Avenue, Contreras-Montesano described her love for New Haven. She said that she first visited La Tapatia Bakery back in 2019 during her first visit to Fair Haven. She fell in love with the city in part because of the bakery’s sweet Mexican bread, which reminded her of her family’s roots in Tlaxcala, Mexico. She also praised New Haven’s community-rooted educator advocacy.

That helped her decide to remain in New Haven after graduating from Yale.

She also was inspired by educators while working at Possible Futures bookstore, which she described as a second home to her and an inspiration to pursue education.

She noted that the Friday tour provided her with vital information for educators about, for example, Fair Haven Health’s medical clinic. She said she hopes her newfound knowledge will help her to “forge relationships with parents based on trust, because we’re able to connect them with resources that are trustworthy and in the community they live in.”

“At its core, this is about justice,” she said.

Contreras-Montesano is working to receive her teaching certification at Southern Connecticut State University (SCSU).

She hopes next year to teach special education at a bilingual school. This year as a student teacher, she will work with a special education mentor to support the classroom.

She also said the tour offered her and other educators the chance to build early friendships with those who they will be working alongside. She said she’d like in particular to connect with Fair Haven Library staffers, after learning about the

CT’s Federal Leaders, Advocates Warn 18M School Children Could Lose Access To Meals

HARTFORD, CT – Sen. Chris Murphy warned of an impending food crisis facing the nation’s children Monday morning due to funding cuts to critical food programs in the recently passed Republican budget bill.

Murphy was joined by Sen. Richard Blumenthal, D-CT, former US Secretary of Education Miguel Cardona, and community advocates at the Legislative Office Building in Hartford.

“There is a coming food crisis for kids this school year,” Murphy said.

“There’s going to be fewer kids getting food in school, and there are going to be more kids showing up to school hungry, and going to bed at night hungry, because of the unconscionable cuts in the Republican budget bill to the food stamps program.”

According to Murphy, 18 million children in the country could lose access to free school meals due to cuts to both Medicaid and the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) in the recently passed Republican budget bill.

Sen. Blumenthal said that while there are many euphemisms to describe the current challenges, the bottom line is that kids all around the country will be going hungry this upcoming school year.

“Concentrating the mind on geography or geometry is almost impossible if you have a gnawing pain in the pit of your stomach which is hunger,” Blumenthal said. “Let’s not use any euphe-

misms when we’re talking about the health of our children.”

Blumenthal also said that Trump’s tariffs have harmed American families as they go back to school shopping and face price increases on everything from juice boxes to calculators.

“He promised a Liberation Day. For students, it is an inflation imprisonment day,” Blumenthal said. “Everything they need for school is going to cost more. Not just a couple of percentage points, but 15-, 20-, 30-, 5- percent more, hollowing out household budgets that ordinarily would go to new clothing or supplies, food, and other real essentials for education.”

Secretary Cardona, who worked in education in Connecticut for more than

20 years, described the other impacts that the budget bill will have on education. He said the bill would lead to the loss of needed services, such as reading specialists and after-school programs.

“This bill that’s been referenced significantly reduces investment in public education,” he said. “It cuts billions from Title I dollars, which support more than 26 million students from low-income communities. It impacts more significantly the 7.5 million students with disabilities across our country. It impacts more significantly the 10 million students living in rural communities across our country. The 5 million students learning English across our country, and the 1.1 million students who are experiencing homelessness across

our country.”

The activists who joined the federal leaders brought the reality of the food challenges home to Connecticut. Julieth Callejas, executive director of End Hunger CT!, said more than 12,000 Connecticut students will lose access to free lunch due to policy changes that reinstated the reduced price lunch fee.

Callejas said that can add up to $1,200 per year per child.

“In a state that is so full of wealth and opportunities, our children should not be worrying about their meals,” Callejas said.

Angel of Edgewood, a nonprofit based in Hartford that fights poverty, food insecurity, and homelessness in the Greater Hartford area, recently

hosted its back-to-school extravaganza.

Executive Director Jendayi Scott-Miller said the event usually draws about 2,000 families but over 3,000 families attended the event this year due to increased need, even as tariffs negatively impacted the organization’s ability to provide fresh food to attendees.

According to Scott-Miller, Angel of Edgewood distributed 6,071 pounds of fresh produce at the event, which is down from the amount of food they have provided in years past.

“For the first time, our distributors could not match our purchase requests because of skyrocketing costs and tariffs,” she said. “When children are starting the school year with less food on their tables, we are not just failing them; we are failing our future. “ In a statement released Monday afternoon, House Republican Leader Vincent Candelora, R-North Branford, criticized both Blumenthal and Murphy as career politicians who were “totally ineffective” while costs rose under former President Joe Biden, and who also opposed Trump’s tax cuts.

“Now, all of a sudden, these senators are outraged about the price of goods and services, while also acting like kids were thriving in classrooms when their party controlled the agenda in Washington,” he said. “Instead of political theater, these senators should deliver results. They could start by removing barriers to natural gas expansion to our state, which would directly lower electric bills for families already stretched thin. Parents need relief from skyrocketing energy costs, not more fake hustle.”

CT State Rep. Is Latest Challenger For Longtime Democratic Congressman

WEST HARTFORD, CT — A West Hartford state representative said the country is “racing in the wrong direction” and she hoped voters would decide to make a change in its Congressional representation.

State Rep Jillian Gilchrest, D-West Hartford, announced she is challenging incumbent Democrat John Larson, D-1st District, for the seat in the United States House of Representatives that he has held since 1999.

Flanked by her children and supporters, Gilchrest made the announcement in West Hartford Center with a mural of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. and other activists and leaders serving as the backdrop.

In her announcement, Gilchrest took aim at President Donald Trump and congressional Republicans.

“What the Trump administration is doing right now is cruel, destructive, and dangerous. They are destroying

our democracy, obliterating justice, and erasing our freedoms,” Gilchrest said.

“They are slashing Medicaid, public education, food assistance, and childcare, using lies and hate to distract us while they take our tax dollars to benefit themselves. This is an emergency.”

Gilchrest also placed blame on Democrats in Washington.

“We’ve lived through a generation of politics where donors came first and working people came last,” she said.

“I’m asking you to believe in a different kind of politics and a different kind of campaign. We can’t bring the change we need by doing the exact same things the exact same way. Instead of chasing dollars from well-connected donors, we’ll be in neighborhoods talking to voters who feel abandoned by Washington. Instead of poll-tested talking points, I’m interested in understanding people’s lived experiences and translating that into effective public policy.”

In response to a reporter’s question, Gilchrest said Larson has contributed

to the problems in Washington.

“I respect Congressman Larson. I appreciate the work he has done. But I think we need elected officials who can work on multiple issues at the same time and can be out there pushing for change every single day, and I don’t see that happening currently,” she said.

In a statement, Larson welcomed the challenge from Gilchrest.

“It’s a democracy. We welcome anyone who wants to run,” he said. “I’m focused on fighting Trump and doing the work for the people of this district every day.”

Gilchrest joins former Hartford mayor Luke Bronin, Hartford school board member Ruth Fortune and Southington Councilman Jack Perry in challenging Larson. She was first elected to represent the 18th district in 2018. A social worker and professor, she serves as the House chair of the Human Services Committee, and also sits on the Appropriations, Public Health, and Judiciary committees.

Use of Weight Loss Drugs Rises Nationwide as Serena Williams Shares Her Story

When Serena Williams told NBC’s “TODAY” show, “I just couldn’t get my weight to where I needed to be at a healthy place and believe me, I don’t take shortcuts. I do everything but shortcuts,” she added her voice to the growing list of public figures discussing the use of GLP1 medications such as Ozempic, Wegovy, and Mounjaro.

Williams said she has lost 31 pounds since beginning the medication in 2023 and launched a campaign with telehealth company Ro to reduce stigma around the drugs. Across the United States, the demand for these drugs has surged.

A 2024 Gallup survey found that 6% of U.S. adults—about 15.5 million people— report having used injectable diabetes medicines for weight loss, including 3% currently using them. FAIR Health estimates that more than 2% of U.S. adults specifically used GLP-1s for weight loss in 2024. The Kaiser Family Foundation (KFF) reported that one in eight U.S. adults (12%) has ever taken a GLP-1 drug, with 6% currently using one. Use is higher among those with health issues: 43% of adults with diabetes, 26% with heart disease, and 22% who were told

they were overweight or obese in the past five years. Black adults (18%) are more likely than white adults (10%) to have used these medications.

Effectiveness is widely reported. Nearly two-thirds (64%) of Americans who have

taken weight loss injections told Gallup they were “effective” or “extremely effective.” Current users were more positive than past users, with 73% of current users reporting effectiveness compared to 53% of past users. Still, cost remains a major

barrier. According to KFF, more than half (54%) of adults who have taken GLP-1s said affording them was difficult, including 22% who said it was “very difficult.”

List prices range from $936 to $1,349 per month before insurance. The Obesity

Medicine Association notes that weight loss medications are typically prescribed for adults with a body mass index (BMI) of 30 or greater, or 27 with weight-related conditions. Weight loss from anti-obesity medications averages between 5% and 21%, though results vary, and most people regain weight if they stop treatment.

Long-term therapy is generally recommended.

Pew Research Center found that obesity now affects 42% of U.S. adults, up sharply over the past three decades. About two-thirds of Americans (65%) told Pew that willpower alone usually isn’t enough for people trying to lose weight and keep it off. The rising demand is seen in sales.

Semaglutide-based medications such as Ozempic, Rybelsus, and Wegovy generated $21.1 billion for Novo Nordisk in 2023, with 71% of revenues coming from the U.S. Eli Lilly’s tirzepatide drug, Mounjaro, brought in nearly $5.2 billion in its first full year on the market. Meanwhile, Williams said her decision to use GLP-1s came after years of struggling.

“I had a lot of issues with my knees, especially after I had my kid. That, quite frankly, definitely had an effect on maybe some wins that I could have had in my career,” she said. “I just feel normal again,” Williams said. “It feels really good."

Experts: Keep Children’s Vaccinations Up To Date As School Year Begins In Connecticut

With students heading back to school, many parents are hearing that they should keep their children’s measles vaccinations up to date. But that isn’t the only potentially deadly illness putting children at risk.

Amy Pisani, CEO of Vaccinate Your Family — a nonprofit organization that helps provide information to families about vaccinations and how they can get access to them — said pertussis, or whooping cough, remains a threat to children’s health. Vaccination is the best way to prevent whooping cough, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

“We want to get the word out about by

making sure people are diligent about whooping cough vaccinations because all the childhood vaccines are absolutely essential,” Pisani said. “So if we’re talking about childhood, there’s a schedule for your children and you should follow the schedule. Don’t delay.”

The CDC reported that as of Aug. 19, a total of 1,375 confirmed measles cases had been reported by 42 jurisdictions.

There have been three deaths, including two school-aged children; all of those who died were not vaccinated.

Connecticut has not had a confirmed measles case since 2021.

For whooping cough, a contagious respiratory illness, the CDC reported a massive increase in cases between 2023 and

2024, from 7,063 to 35,435. Cases remain elevated in 2025, although the number has gone down since the peak in November 2024, according to the CDC. Connecticut’s Department of Public Health (DPH) has reported that the percentage of kindergarten students in the state who received the required measles-mumps-rubella (MMR) vaccine in the 2024-25 school year was 98.3%, an increase of 0.5% from the previous year.

“Connecticut ranked highest in the country for two-dose measles vaccination rate among kindergarteners and our other increasing immunization

rates stand in contrast to the national decline,” said DPH Commissioner Manisha Juthani. ” Our high vaccination rates have helped Connecticut remain one of eight states that has not had a case of measles yet, as cases continue to accumulate around the country.”

Juthani said getting vaccinations on a routine basis will help achieve and maintain community-level immunity.

“We cannot predict which respiratory viral infection will be most prevalent this season, but we can protect our families against them — and potential severe complications — by getting vaccinated this

fall,” Juthani said.

Flu-related pediatric deaths on the rise Pisani said there are still child fatalities resulting from the flu. According to the CDC, there have been 267 influenza-associated pediatric deaths reported during the 2024-25 season.

“This is the highest number of pediatric deaths reported in any non-pandemic influenza season since the condition became reportable in 2004,” according to the CDC’s website. “Among children who were eligible for influenza vaccination and with known vaccine status, 90% of reported pediatric deaths this season (compared to 82% during the 2023-24 season) have occurred in children who were not fully vaccinated against influenza.”

Pisani said this can turn into a tragedy for many families.

HPV Vaccine Pisani also recommends that parents provide their children with the Human Papillomavirus (HPV) Vaccine; medical professionals say it helps protect against HPV infections that most commonly cause cancer, according to the CDC. This vaccine is for older children, with the CDC recommending 2 doses at ages 11–12 years.

Pisani said there is a lot of misinformation and intentional disinformation circulating in social media, but parents should make sure they ask questions of their doctors to get the appropriate, accurate information.

“You should ask questions. It’s not shameful to ask questions about what’s going into your children’s bodies,” Pisani said. “We’ll give you the facts and then we’ll also give you the sources for where you can go for more information.”

Trump Rollbacks Put Mental Health Coverage at Risk Nationwide

Millions of Americans are facing steeper barriers to mental health care as the Trump administration dismantles protections designed to hold insurers accountable. According to ProPublica, just months into his second term, the administration paused Biden-era rules that required insurers to disclose how they restrict or deny mental health claims. The suspension, combined with funding cuts to the federal agency that enforces mental health parity, has left patients vulnerable to denials, delays, and rising medical bills.

The timing is especially troubling. According to the 2024 Senior Report, drug deaths among U.S. adults 65 and older surged in recent years, with the District of Columbia experiencing a 120 percent increase between 2017-2019 and 20202022. The same report found that Black seniors across the country are more than four times as likely to die prematurely as their white peers. These outcomes point to the urgent need for accountability in coverage — precisely what federal regulators are now retreating from.

Oversight is rapidly shrinking. Various reports note that the Employee Benefits Security Administration (EBSA), the Labor Department agency responsible for enforcing parity laws, is expected to lose nearly 20 percent of its workforce,

dropping from 831 employees in 2024 to fewer than 700 by 2026. The investigative staff alone has already been cut by almost 40 percent in some regions, forcing remaining investigators to juggle overwhelming caseloads and leaving families waiting longer for relief.

For many, the results are devastating.

ProPublica detailed the case of a Massa-

chusetts family whose teenage daughter developed self-harm behaviors and severe anorexia during the pandemic. Their insurer denied coverage for residential treatment, leaving the family with more than $80,000 in bills. Only after a long battle and intervention from an EBSA investigator did the insurer agree to repay most of the cost. With fewer investigators

and weaker rules, similar families may not get help.

Researchers noted that local initiatives continue to show what is possible. CareFirst BlueCross BlueShield previously reported that it has invested nearly $8 million into behavioral health grants across Maryland, Virginia, and the District of Columbia. In the program’s first year,

more than 3,300 youth were screened for unmet behavioral health needs, and thousands received clinical or peer support.

CareFirst also says it funded the training and licensing of dozens of new providers to address shortages. Still, such community-driven programs, while impactful, cannot replace national oversight.

The rollback of mental health protections is part of a continuing trend. With all his devastating policies that come right out of the Project 2025 playbook, Trump has moved to unwind several Biden-era initiatives across health care, energy, and education. In mental health specifically, advocates warn that the administration’s actions have effectively gutted the strongest provisions of the 2008 Mental Health Parity and Addiction Equity Act, which was designed to guarantee equal treatment for mental and physical health care.

The consequences are already visible in communities nationwide. According to the 2024 Senior Report, racial and economic disparities in mortality, drug deaths, and housing insecurity continue to grow. Without federal enforcement to guarantee coverage, those inequities are likely to deepen.

“The expectation was that these rules would be incredibly significant in driving better compliance,” former EBSA deputy Ali Khawar told ProPublica. “So now that it is on hold, it is a significant benefit that will never be realized.”

Black Women Are Missing Out on Life-Saving Triple-Negative Breast Cancer Treatment

Triple-negative breast cancer (TNBC) disproportionately affects Black women in the U.S., contributing to higher breast cancer mortality rates in this population. A recent study published in the JAMA Network Open has revealed significant racial disparities in the administration of immunotherapy, a treatment that improves outcomes in early-stage and metastatic TNBC.

What is Immunotherapy?

Immunotherapy is a type of cancer treatment that uses the body’s own immune system to fight cancer cells. It involves using biological or chemical factors that change the immune system or the patient’s response to tumor cells.

In the context of TNBC, immunotherapy often involves the use of immune checkpoint inhibitors, like atezolizumab and pembrolizumab, which work by blocking proteins that stop the immune system from attacking cancer cells.

Why is Immunotherapy Important for TNBC? In the context of cancer, clinical

trials are essential for developing and improving life-saving treatments like immunotherapy. They provide a structured way to test the safety and effectiveness of new therapies and can offer patients access to cutting-edge treatments that are not yet widely available.

However, clinical trials must include diverse patient populations, including Black women, to ensure that the findings apply to all who may benefit from these treatments.

Immunotherapy has been shown to

significantly improve outcomes for patients with TNBC. For metastatic TNBC, studies have demonstrated that immunotherapy in combination with chemotherapy can improve overall survival. In early-stage TNBC, immunotherapy has been shown to increase the rate of pathologic complete response (pCR), which is the absence of any signs of cancer in tissue removed during surgery after treatment. Achieving pCR is a key indicator of treatment success and is associated with better

long-term survival.

Racial Disparities in Immunotherapy Use The study, which analyzed data from 10,724 patients with TNBC between 2019 and 2021, revealed that while immunotherapy use has increased overall, Black patients with metastatic TNBC are less likely to receive this treatment compared to White patients. This dis-

parity persists even when socioeconomic factors are taken into account.

Researchers found that immunotherapy use increased from 5.5 percent in 2017 to 38.8 percent in 2021 for metastatic TNBC, and from 4.2 percent in 2017 to 48.0 percent in 2021 for early-stage TNBC. However, the increase was lower among Black patients.

The study also found that socioeconomic factors play a role in the disparities seen in early-stage TNBC treatment. When factors such as insurance status and treatment facility type were considered, the differences in immunotherapy use between Black and White patients were no longer significant.

The authors of the study suggest that there may be other unmeasured factors contributing to the lower use of immunotherapy in Black patients with metastatic TNBC, such as racial differences in PD-L1 status (a protein that affects how well immunotherapy works), differences in the tests used to determine PD-L1 status, or differences in access to biomarker testing.

The study shows the urgent need to address the racial disparities in cancer care. The researchers emphasize that efforts should be made to ensure equal access to immunotherapy for all patients, which could help improve the survival and disproportionate impact of

Julianne Malveaux: Trump tantrum overshadows Black women’s losses

(TriceEdneyWire.com)—The July 2025 unemployment report, released on August 1st, did not meet expectations. Instead of addressing the deficiencies by his own misguided policies, the President of the United States reacted in predictable fashion. He fired Dr. Erika Entarfer, Commissioner of Labor Statistics, because he didn’t like the report, and accused the economist of rigging the data, whose appointment was approved by a Senate vote of 86-8.

A bipartisan group, friends of the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS), which includes former labor commissioners, economists, and statisticians, strongly supported her confirmation. Even Trump acolytes like JD Vance (Ohio) and Marco Rubio (Florida) supported her confirmation. Rabid Trumpies like Ted Cruz (Texas) and Rick Scott (Florida) were among those opposing her nomination, but their numbers were few.

There has been widespread protest to Dr. McEntarfer’s firing, because it was nothing more than an autocratic tantrum from a misguided so-called “leader” whose sole purpose seems to be to create chaos and destroy our infrastructure including, in the words of Heidi Shierholtz, “one of the most respected

statistical agencies in the world, known for its methodological rigor, independence, and transparency.” The President seems unwilling or unable to understand the process of producing the monthly Employment Situation report, which many (myself included) look forward to perusing on the first Friday of each month. Data addicts eagerly examine the report looking for fluctuations and, yes, adjustments in the data because they very often happen.

Why? The data comes from businesses and other establishments (like government agencies), large and small.

Many report data promptly, mostly because they have the apparatus to do so. Smaller businesses, a large part of our economy, may report on a delayed basis, hence the adjustments. Further, the BLS workforce of about 2300 people is eight percent lower than it was in 2010. Moving forward, the 2026 budget will be lower by another eight percent. Even with the cuts, BLS proceeds with precision and accuracy, something that this President has little value for. If he even a modicum of respect for the agency, it would not have received cuts—it’s already lean and mean. Further, he would not have fired a BLS commissioner whose work has been exemplary.

Most Serious Charges Dropped For Ex-Officers In Deadly Breonna Taylor Raid A federal judge has dismissed the most serious charge against two former Louisville police officers involved in the 2020 deadly raid of Breonna Taylor’s apartment.

On the night of March 13, 2020, Taylor was in her apartment with her boyfriend, Kenneth Walker, when Louisville officers executed a no-knock warrant, which was later found to be based on faulty information. Walker shot at police as they charged through the door, believing officers were intruders. Officers shot into the apartment, firing the fatal one that killed Taylor.

Ex-officers Kyle Meany and Joshua Jaynes were initially charged with violating Taylor’s civil rights, a felony carrying a maximum sentence of life in prison. Prosecutors accused the pair of lying and including false information in the search warrant used in the botched raid on Taylor’s apartment.

In a ruling on Wednesday (August 20), U.S. District Judge Charles Simpson determined that “prosecutors can’t attribute Taylor’s death to the lack of a warrant because the officers’ returning fire was a legal act,” WBIR reports.

“This is not a case of excessive force.

Nor is it a case of police brutality,” Simpson wrote. “This is a case of legal, lethal, and tragic crossfire that was not initiated by the police.”

Simpson had previously dropped felony civil rights charges against Meany and Jaynes in August 2024. The pair still faces lesser misdemeanor charges.

Jaynes also remains charged with conspiracy and falsification of records in a federal investigation. Meany is still charged with making a false statement to federal investigators.

Commissioner diverted attention from the actual contents of the report. In a tantrum using loaded words like “rigged,” our feckless leader has undermined confidence in the fundamentals of our economy. EPI’s Shierholtz states, “The economy runs on reliable data. The Federal Reserve uses the data to set interest rates. State and local governments use them to plan

budgets. If policymakers and the public can’t trust the data—or suspect the data is being manipulated—confidence collapses and reasonable economic decision making becomes impossible.”

Shierholz likened using faulty data to driving a car blindfolded. Unfortunately, this administration, like bulls in a China closet, is managing the economy blindfolded, as with tariffs. Let the chips fall where they may. The citizens feel the pinch of rising prices and federal layoffs, and that’s the price of electing incompetence.

The President’s tantrum overshadows the losses that Black women experience from this report. Language in the report says that most of the indicators “changed little,” whether we are addressing the unemployment rate, the employment population ratio or the labor force participation rate. The summary does note that the employment population ratio has dropped by four tenths of a percent over the last year. But the summary does not highlight the fact that only Black women saw their employment population ratio (or the percentage of the population with jobs), drop significantly. While most groups (White men, White women, Black men) saw drops of a tenth of a percentage point, Black women’s employment population ratio dropped

from 59.5 percent to 56.7 percent, or 2.8 percent. That’s an extremely concerning drop and it is one that has not been highlighted. Why? Too much attention has been placed on the toxic tantrum, and not enough on a population that is the backbone of the Black community. And it is possible that future reports will further deemphasize this significant change.

When looking at labor market data, most labor economists suggest that month-to-month fluctuations should be taken contextually, considering the possibility of adjustment. But these employment population ratio changes are over the year from July 2024 through July 2025.

We need to read the fine print and forget about the tantrums. We must pay attention to the appointment of the next Commissioner of Labor Statistics. If the new commissioner is a sycophantic loyalist, like Attorney General Pam Bondi, we might look forward to only seeing data that this President approves of. Driving a car blindfolded, crashing everywhere, with data on Black women as collateral damage.

Trump Says Chicago Is Up ‘Next’ For Federal Takeover

President Donald Trump is eyeing Chicago as the next city to face a sweeping federal crackdown on crime.

On Friday (August 22), Trump said his administration would be targeting Chicago following his takeover of the Washington, D.C. police and deployment of roughly 2,000 National Guard troops, per CNN. “We’ll straighten that one out, probably next, that will be our next one after this,” Trump said from the Oval Office. “I think Chicago will be our next and then we’ll help with New York.”

Trump claimed that his takeover of D.C. has led to a reduction in crime, calling the recent week without murder a “miracle.”

The president also noted that he could keep National Guard troops in the capital “as long as I want” by declaring a national emergency.

“It’s one thing to get them out, it’s another thing to keep them out for a long period of time,” Trump said. “That’s going to take more than 30 days.”

On Friday, Trump also threatened D.C. Mayor Muriel Bowser, saying that if she “doesn’t get her act straight,” the federal government would take over.

“I’m tired of listening to these people say how safe it was before we got here.

It was unsafe. It was horrible,” he said.

“Mayor Bowser better get her act straight, or she won’t be mayor very long.”

“They’re wearing red hats, African American ladies, beautiful ladies, are saying, ‘Please, President Trump, come to Chicago,’” he said.

In response to Trump threatening to take over Chicago, Mayor Brandon Johnson said the president’s approach was “uncoordinated, uncalled for, and unsound.”

“We take President Trump’s statements seriously, but to be clear, the City has not received any formal communication from the Trump administration regarding additional federal law enforcement or military

deployments to Chicago,” the mayor said.

Johnson also warned that “unlawfully deploying the National Guard to Chicago has the potential to inflame tensions between residents and law enforcement.”

It remains unclear how a federal crackdown in Chicago would work. Unlike Washington, D.C., Chicago is not under federal jurisdiction, meaning Trump would need coordination from state and local officials to deploy troops or seize control of local policing.

On Friday, Trump described Johnson as “incompetent,” adding, “When we’re ready, we’ll go in and we’ll straighten out Chicago just like we did DC.”

Tashia Lemon-Guillory recently shared her Head Start success story with the National Head Start Association.

She says, “After I graduated college with a degree in early education, I wasn’t sure what I wanted my focus area to be. At that time, I thought I might pursue an advanced degree in social work, but I was unsure. It was a visit to my Head Start program that brought the clarity I needed. During an outing with a friend, I paid a visit to my former Head Start center in St. Landry Parish, Louisiana, and en-

countered my former teacher. I was struck by how, after so many years, she was still inspiring children and families. It was then that I realized I wanted to have that kind of impact on children and families, and Head Start was the exact place to do that.

“I am currently the director of the Lawtell Head Start Center in Lawtell, Louisiana, and I have been here for 18 years. I cherish the opportunity to give back what I received to the same parish where I attended. On a regular basis, as an educator, I get to clearly see the academic and social differences between students who attended

Head Start and those who have not. I have the triple honor of being a Head Start alumna, working in Head Start, and having a child who also attended Head Start. Like so many others, our family is living proof of the impact Head Start has on children, families, and their trajectories. I attended Head Start, came to work with Head Start, and I remain with Head Start because Head Start changes lives.”

Howard University President Ben Vinson Will Suddenly Step Down as President on August 31

In a surprising announcement, Howard University President Ben Vinson III, 55, will leave his position as Howard University’s 18th President.

Vinson’s departure comes at a usual time: The start of the academic year.

“We understand that this news may be surprising to some, coming at the start of the academic year,” said Leslie Hale, Howard University Board of Trustees chair, on a video posted on Howard University’s website. A statement on Howard’s website posted before the news of Vinson’s departure reads, “As we stand on the threshold of this new academic year, I am filled

with optimism and hope for what lies ahead. Let us continue to embrace the spirit of Howard University – a spirit that encourages us to push boundaries, seek justice, and strive for excellence in all that we do."

A campus-wide engagement tour is also posted on the President’s page online as of August 22. Though Vinson’s departure happens at a moment when military National Guard troops have occupied Washington, DC, at the orders of President Trump, there is no indication at this time that Vinson’s departure is related to DC being occupied by federal police and the military.

Vinson became President of Howard only two years ago, on September 1,

Conservative Activist CJ Pearson Says White Liberals Are ‘Fearful’ Of Losing Power Over Black Americans

A viral protest sign in Virginia triggered some feelings for conservative activist CJ Pearson, pushing claims that white liberals are starting to get scared of losing “power” over Black Americans, Fox News reports.

A white woman was seen holding a sign outside of an Arlington County school board meeting, allegedly pushing accusations of racial undertones due to the state’s lieutenant governor and GOP gubernatorial candidate, Winsome Earle-Sears, being Black.

“Hey Winsome, if trans can’t share your bathroom, then Blacks can’t share my water fountain,” the sign held by the unidentified woman read.

Pearson said the sign promotes racism from white liberals. “This is a sign being held by a white liberal protesting against the Black Republican nominee for Governor in Virginia speaking out against boys using the girls’ bathroom,” Pearson wrote.

“White liberals are some of the most

racist people in the United States.”

He defended Earle-Sears, claiming “the Left has always been unapologetically nasty to Black people who think for themselves.” “First and foremost, I’m not surprised by what happened at that protest and those comments that were directed at Winsome,” the GOP activist said.

Mariah Stackhouse is a Driving Force for Black Women in LPGA Is there any club more closed to Black women than professional golf? The answer is yes … polo. But, on Monday, Aug. 18, Mariah Stackhouse, the only full-time active Black player on the LPGA Tour was featured at the Morehouse School of Medicine Golf Tournament at the Capital City Club in Brookhaven to bring awareness to opportunities for aspiring minority golfers and raise scholarship funds for deserving MSM students.

A Stanford graduate and KPMG brand ambassador, Stackhouse has attracted scores of other young minority men and women to the sport which was exclusively the domain of the privileged and limited people of color to caddy positions rather than those actually taking a shot on the green. ” You know, if you don’t come from generational wealth or immediate wealth, for young parents, it can be a burden. I know that was for my parents,” said Stackhose who explained that her first set of golf clubs, at the age of two were clubs her father cut down for the toddler to accompany him on the golf course where he and his siblings had worked while growing up in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina.

The bourgeoning golf protege went on to play in her first tournament at the age of six, and as golf enthusiasts began to take notice they also became were more willing to open their wallets for her to win a purse. “I had proven myself to be dedicated and good at a young age, so

my parents were able to find that support.

You know, people are willing to help when you’re working hard, and those

efforts were showing, so I was very fortunate to be in that position that [funders would invest in me],” Stackhouse shares.

Stackhouse’s father remained her primary coach unti the age of 11, and by the time the junior golfer was becoming a sports celebrity when the family relocated to Atlanta, where she graduated from North Clayton High School in Riverdale, Ga and Stackhouse went on to graduate of Stanford University. “if you’re able to compete, you’re able to win,” declares Stackhouse regarding securing access and her position in the amateur golf world.

“There’s an organization called Golf Foundation that would go out and seek support for me, and that was before the NCAA changed rules, right? So you couldn’t really accept money from people without losing eligibility … so my parents would reach out to people in the golf community that wanted to support me, that wanted to help, and they would be able to give funds to me. We’d run them through the James organization, provide receipts, and that’s how I was able to keep my funding. Stackhouse beams about her parents’ career guidance and dedication to her dream.

In 2011, at the age of 17, Stackhouse became the youngest African American woman to earn a spot in the field at the U.S. Open, and in 2014, she became the first African American woman to make the Curtis Cup team, which the United States won that year.

During her tenure at Stanford, where she was a four-year All-American, Stackhouse helped the Cardinal to an NCAA title in 2015.

But the celebrated athlete, her impact extends beyond tournament results: “I embrace my Blackness in the golf world,” focusing on promoting diversity and inclusion. at the Morehouse Golf tournament, Mariah showed up and showed out. The 41-year-old golf champion was on hand to lead aspiring golfers and share her personal journey to national prominence and historic achievements.

During the Morehouse School of Medicine Golf Tournament, Stackhouse emphasized the importance of mental strength and the evolving inclusivity in golf, noting the growth of Black female professionals, while also discussing the need for better support and resources for junior golfers and their parents. ” I’m proud to be black, you know, and I know that God made me this way, and I’m happy to be that. So I think that I’ve always had a strong sense of self and a love of self, and that can sometimes power through and see things that people want to do to make you feel.”

Stackhouse concluded the very successful Morehouse School of Medicine with this thought: “Specifically, I think about this. … the Morehouse School of Medicine tournament is one of my favorite parts … I love doing clinics with adult beginners and just talking to them about the game, we can all be winners.”

World’s highest-paid tennis players in 2025: Coco Gauff overtakes Novak Djokovic in incredible feat

Coco Gauff is the highest-paid female tennis player in the world, according to Forbes’ annual rich list of tennis players.

The 21-year-old American raked in $37.2 million over the past 12 months—$12.2 million in prize money and $25 million off the court. Gauff ranked third behind Carlos Alcaraz ($48.3 million) and Jannik Sinner ($47.3 million) and overtook Novak Djokovic, who came in fourth with $29.6 million.

Also the first among women’s players, Gauff’s earnings have risen by around $10 million from last year.

Making more money off the court, brands that have worked with her include Bose, New Balance and hair care brand Carol’s Daughter.

Gauff also disclosed in January that she had invested in Unrivaled, ahead of the three-on-three women’s basketball league’s inaugural season. “My dad always wanted me to follow in his footsteps and play basketball,” she wrote on X. “Haha sorry dad but this is as close as it will get.”

She also left her agency, Team8, in

April to launch her own management firm in collaboration with powerhouse talent firm WME. Jazz musician Norman Evans, 66, entered eternal rest on August 9, 2025, in Lanham MD after a brief illness. Norman Verneil Evans was born on August 27, 1958, in Danbury CT to his parents the late Willie James Evans and Peggy Evans-Minott; his family would later relocate to New Haven where he attended New Haven Public Schools.

Norman Evans was a two-time Grammy nominee in the category of Best Contemporary Jazz Album in 2007 for his album titled "Suspension", and in 2008 for his Albums "Karma Blush and Twilight".

While living in CT., Norman worked as a social worker for the City of New Haven and later served as the Town of Stratford's Welfare Director, and the Program Director for the Grant Street Partnership.

Norman was the founder of The Journey Foundation and the Norman Evans Foundation which were community charities in MD that supported the underserved populations to help fight hunger in schools and communities.

Norman leaves to cherish his memory, his family members, friends, fellow musicians, and fans who enjoyed his music. Norman will be deeply missed by all who loved him. Norman's legacy will live on through his music, and in the memories of those whose lives he touched.

Trump Wrong to Federalize Policing in Washington, DC

The 700,000 residents of the capital are as entitled to self-government as other Americans are and will hopefully eventually achieve statehood. We do not need to be occupied by the National Guard and a federalized police force as if we were an enemy nation conquered in war.

Scott Bolden, Black PressUSA President Donald Trump sounded like a 19th-century European colonialist justifying the subjugation of “savage natives” in “darkest Africa” when he recently ordered a federal takeover of the police force in Washington, D.C, and deployed 800 National Guard troops in the city.

This followed Trump’s order assigning 500 federal law enforcement officers — including FBI agents who should be protecting the nation against major threats — to combat D.C. street crime.

Black people make up the largest racial group in Washington — about 43 percent — and the city’s mayor, police chief and non-voting delegate to the U.S. House of Representatives are all Black. The president seems to believe they are incapable of fighting crime.

Trump falsely claimed in an Aug. 11 news conference that D.C. “has been overtaken by violent gangs and bloodthirsty criminals, roving mobs of wild youth, drugged out maniacs and homeless people.” Not coincidentally, Trump used his news conference to also attack other cities run by Black mayors: Baltimore, Chicago, Los Angeles, New York and Oakland.

I’ve lived in Washington for decades.

It is a beautiful city, drawing visitors for safe and enjoyable trips from around the world — not the nightmarish hellhole Trump described. We have some of the world’s finest museums, monuments, parks, neighborhoods, and public spaces.

Trump notably failed to mention that crime in Washington fell 35 percent to its lowest level in 30 years in 202,4, and violent crime has plummeted an additional 26 percent so far this year. Some people may not feel safe in Washington, but the significant drop in crime in the capital city hardly qualifies as the “public safety emergency” Trump said existed.

Alarmingly, Trump said that under his orders, police “are allowed to do whatever the hell they want.” What does that mean?

Does the president claim police can violate the constitutional rights of anyone and break any laws they want in their zeal to somehow reduce crime? Is he giving

himself the power to allow police to beat or even kill suspected criminals without accountability? Under Trump’s order, will we see more Black people murdered by police, as George Floyd was in Minneapolis in 2020?

Trump has no power to violate the Constitution and laws, no matter how much he wishes he did.

The president’s action overriding the powers of the local government in D.C. constitutes a brazen power grab and a desperate publicity stunt designed to distract attention from his years-long friendship with convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein. He also wants to portray himself falsely — the first convicted felon to serve as president — as a tough-on-crime supporter of police.

The truth is that Trump is the best friend criminals have — as long as they break the law in support of him. He proved this by pardoning about 1,500 people — most of them white — accused or already convicted of crimes in the Jan. 6, 2021, Capitol riot that was designed to keep him in

power after he was defeated in the 2020 presidential election. Rioters violently attacked and injured about 140 police officers, including five officers who later died.

Washington already has more police officers per capita than any state or large U.S. city. Turning over the police department to federal officials without local knowledge and no hands-on policing experience — assisted by National Guardsmen without law enforcement training — won’t improve the police department’s performance. It will make things worse.

A better way to help D.C. strengthen its police department would be for the U.S. House to approve legislation allowing the city government to spend $1 billion of its local tax dollars on police and other programs this year. Unfortunately, the Republican-controlled House has failed to approve legislation to do this by correcting a mistake in a federal spending bill.

Reducing crime requires more than putting police on the streets and making arrests. It requires a series of policies to

prevent crimes, not just respond to them.

More federal funding for private-public partnerships with local businesses and houses of worship can create alternative paths for young people to help them stay out of trouble, graduate from high school, and go on to job training, college, or careers. Programs like these are far cheaper than tracking down and imprisoning criminals, and are more effective at protecting public safety.

Mayor Muriel Bowser said the federal government could do more to reduce crime if it funded more prosecutors in the district and filled the 15 vacancies on the D.C. Superior Court, including some that have gone unfilled for years.

Because the District of Columbia is not a state, the president and Congress have greater power to exercise control than they do over the 50 states. Trump recently said he has asked lawyers to study congressional repeal of the 1973 D.C. Home Rule Act, which gave residents of the capital limited self-government and the right to elect a mayor and city council. Before

the act’s passage, the president appointed commissioners who ran local government like colonial overseers.

Increased federal control of Washington is the exact opposite course the president should follow. Rather than denouncing and demonizing city officials as adversaries and falsely portraying Washington, he ought to work with city leaders as allies to reduce crime, homelessness, and other problems that affect all big cities.

The 700,000 residents of the capital are as entitled to self-government as other Americans are and will hopefully eventually achieve statehood. We do not need to be occupied by the National Guard and a federalized police force as if we were an enemy nation conquered in war.

Having the federal government increase its control of D.C. local affairs is a mistake that the president should reconsider, and Congress should halt if he refuses.
