A Matter of Principle

When Ethan wandered out of the house while our backs were turned on an Easter Sunday as a toddler, Sheba followed him. The neighbor down the street brought them both back a few minutes later. Not our best parenting moment, but at least Sheba was watching him closely.

She was a terrific dog, and I cried like she was my

childhood pet when she passed away.

Dogs are one of the things that separate me from being a (completely) bitter and jaded old journalist. They offer daily doses of cuteness and affection that nurture the spirit and fill the heart.

That’s why we’re excited to share a few cute pictures of dogs (and other animals) in this issue. We hope you enjoy them as much as we did.

The Naked Truth

ay is “Honesty Month” according to Johnston County Public School’s character education calendar. So, what is the proper response to this fact? Will there be a parade? Shall we dress in certain colors? Should we gather with loved ones for a feast in honor of honesty? Not a bad idea!

But, seriously, having a whole month set aside for a character trait denotes a level of importance that should go beyond the walls of the schools. What better cause to stand in solidarity with than our own community’s core values?

So, in honor of honesty, let us consider the wisdom of an old fairy tale by Hans Christian Anderson called “The Emperor’s Has your pet been scratching a lot or having recurring skin and ear infections. If so, your pet may have allergies.

New Clothes.” This is a clever satire that manages to deal with honesty on the levels of self-deception, social conformity and the courage to speak the truth despite social pressures.

Basically, the emperor, who is obsessed with having the finest clothes, hires two swindlers who promise to weave him some royal finery from a magical fabric that only the wise can see. In reality, of course, they con him and create nothing.

Instead of admitting to seeing no clothes when the rascals unveil “them,” the emperor pretends to admire them, afraid to appear foolish and unfit for his office.

The emperor's courtiers and subjects go along with the illusion of the new clothes because they believe everyone else sees them, leading to a collective delusion.

The jig is up when a young child calls out during the grand procession that the emperor is naked, revealing the folly of the ruler’s vanity and the power of honesty.

Of all things, to have the very ruler of the land so weak in character as to be childishly self-obsessed and intellectually dishonest! Shouldn’t a true leader exhibit basic virtues such as courage, fairness and honesty? Indeed, the emperor was not fit for his office. The swindlers already had him pegged!

And all the subjects and courtiers were just as flawed. But exactly where did they go wrong? Did they actually believe the clothes did exist, but that they were not wise enough to see them, so they pretended otherwise? Or did they see through the ruse but feared reprisals if they scoffed?

If the first, they were committing the logical fallacy of the appeal to consensus: “I don’t see it, but most do, so I guess the majority must be right!” If the second, they were unconvinced but lacked the courage to buck popular opinion.

But what about that kid who refused to keep his mouth shut? He alone realized that if you are really wise, you will call a spade a spade, even if everybody around you says it is a club or a diamond.

It is wise and courageous to be honest!

Latinos Activate JOCO announces eighth-annual JOCO Latino Festival in Selma Submitted by Latinos Activate JOCO

ELMA — Latinos Activate JOCO announces the eighth-annual JOCO Latino Festival, a vibrant celebration of Latino culture and community engagement.

The festival is scheduled for Sunday, May 12, from 1-6 p.m.

This year's festival will be prominently situated along Raiford and Waddell streets, with comprehensive road closures to ensure a safe and festive atmosphere for all attendees. Specifically, the closures will be effective from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. on festival day.

These closures will facilitate the placement of an array of food trucks along Waddell

Street, showcasing diverse Latino culinary offerings. To accommodate festival-goers, ample parking options will be available throughout the town.

The festival will also feature vendor stalls along Raiford Street, showcasing a variety of goods and services and live entertainment at the intersection of S. Raiford and Railroad streets, featuring musical and dance performances celebrating Latino heritage.

Latinos Activate JOCO is dedicated to ensuring a safe, enjoyable and accessible festival experience for all attendees.

We adopted Floki at 10 months old from a Labrador rescue group.

Imagine our surprise when we submitted his DNA for testing, just for fun, and discovered he's not a lab at all - he's our big "super mutt," with a mixture of Rottweiler, Boxer, German Shepard and a bunch of other breeds. His name comes from a favorite character from the show "Vikings." He just turned 6 years old and makes us all laugh every day with his silly antics.

Rescue pets are the best pets, or at least they are at Randy and Shanna's. Van Gogh lost an ear as a puppy (hence the name) and was too cute not to adopt a few years ago. He's little, but barks and acts like a much larger dog. Lyla, on the other hand, was a sickly puppy who was suffering from anemia, among other things. Benny is a 13 year old Boxer that was the runt of his litter, however he has outlived all of his siblings and is living his best life. His inquisitive nature leads him into all kinds of mischief as most boxers do. His unique form of "Boxer English" has us constantly wondering, "what is he up to?" Benny was originally named Bentley when we rescued him at 2 years of age. It didn't take long for us to realize that the sophistication associated with the name "Bentley" did not correlate with the activities he portrayed. One could say, instead of champagne, we got muscadine wine. He will always be our baby!

We rescued Jewel (left) at 10 weeks (now 10 years) and Moose we found playing on the side of the road a few months ago. We have no idea how old he is, but he has lots of energy and he has fit right in with the family. Both of these dogs fill the void of my wife wanting more kids. As long as the void is filled, I am happy. Both are great family dogs.

Running Rainbow Bridge Hospice Rescue (and assisting with other rescues) is a labor of love for Terri and David. There are 11 precious puppies in this photo, and that's only the tip of the iceberg in terms of sweet dogs with health concerns that Rainbow Bridge helps each and every day.

Pet Photo Contest Winner

Pet: Boone Age: 7 Owner: Paul Robinson About our pet: Boone is our resident emotional support animal for all clients, employees, mailmen, delivery people, passersby on the street and pretty much anyone in downtown Clayton that needs a little pick-me-up, friend or confidant. He works hard, plays hard especially if you have a ball to throw and cleans up pretty well too when he dons one of his infamous bowties.

Boone is about 8 years old. I got him in August 2017, from Love Mutts Rescue in Raleigh. He was a foster fail. They estimated him to be about a year old at that time. I had him for about a week and was supposed to take him to his first adoption event.

But most of my clients have just gone through one of the most traumatic events of their lives (injury, car accident, loss of employment, etc.) and it can be very intimidating speaking with an attorney anyway. Boone, along with his big sister Cassidy, help my clients feel comfortable. So, I adopted him and he’s been with me ever since. His name is a homage to my dad, who had passed away a couple weeks before I got Boone. My dad was a big American frontier history buff and I came across the name “Boone” as I was trying to think of a name for him.

Pet: Whiskey Age: 2 Owner: Jennifer Villareal About our pet: Whiskey may look cute with the one floppy ear but don’t let that cuteness fool you! He is so smart but only listens when he chooses to. He bosses his little brother, Hank around and Hank is a big black lab, twice Whiskey’s size! We love Whiskey and he definitely keeps us on our toes.

Pet: Ruby Age: Passed away Owner: Stephen Turner About our pet: Our precious Ruby passed 5 years ago. She never believed she was actually a dog, but rather a person. She had a personality like no other and she was loved.

Pet: Bo Age: 17 weeks Owner: Shannon Baker About our pet: Meet Bo, a male boxer who loves attention and snuggling with just about anyone. Bo doesn't know a stranger and offers loving attention to everyone he meets.

Pet: Kali Age: 8 months Owner: Todd Daniels About our pet: Kali and her brother, Jasper, were born to a stray my wife and I brought in. She sadly passed away five days after they were born. We were faced with the challenge of raising them, which was very hard. Thankfully they have survived and are very happy and playful kittens.

Pet: Ava Age: 5 Owner: Leah Johnson About our pet: Ava has a heart of gold and a tail that never stops wagging. One of Ava's remarkable traits is her boundless love for all creatures, great and small. She's not just a pet; she's a nurturing caretaker.

Ava's favorite pastime is sitting by and watching over baby chicks, ducklings and kittens with the utmost tenderness.

I took him in and raised him and his brother as indoor cats. He was named after George Michael from WHAM! and also the Angel, Michael and Daniel from the Bible. He loves to chase flies around the house, catch them and eats them. Yum.

Pet: Vegas Age: 9 Owner: Dana Danger About our pet: Vegas was pulled from the Wayne County shelter and adopted from Johnston County Animal Protection League. He loves his mom and his kitty siblings, and he loves fetching his bone.

Pet: Peaches Age: 12 Owner: Awana Payne About our pet: Peaches is a chihuahua and poodle mixed dog, although she looks more chihuahua-like. She is very friendly and will let everyone kiss and hug her. She likes kids especially, but really anyone who gives her attention!

He loves a good car ride, and one of his favorites included a cross-country trip including stops in Arches, Yosemite (where he swam in some cool creeks) and Yellowstone National Parks.

The foster family helped make sure she had a safe and loving home to have her pups. He loves being outside, having the "zoomies", and loves working for treats. I rescued him from the parking lot at work two years ago.

He was hanging around the parking lot for a few days scrounging for food. I did not have anything to feed him, except a small bag of Cheetos I had in my car. I poured the Cheetos on the ground and he ate them. The next day, he was back, so I caught him and brought him home with me and named him Chester after Chester the Cheetah on the Cheetos bag.

Pet: Ruger Age: 9 Owner: Gail Hall About our pet: Ruger’s first year was a challenge to say the least. He should have been named Destroy. After that first year he began to understand what was off limits. He was easily trained and even now he is eager to show his many talents. Ruger is an Aussiedoodle and weighs 85 pounds. He is patient and his behavior has many of our friends and family amazed. We are extremely proud to have this big boy in our family.

Pet: Oreo Age: 8 Owner: Tammy Braglin About our pet: Oreo is our rescue baby. She is pit/lab mix. She loves to cuddle and follows her daddy everywhere.

She allows her mommy to dress her up. She loves treats and loves being in her bookstore greeting HER favorite people every day. She gives the best kisses and hugs.

He was a stray kitten and we adopted him from Pet Smart in Garner and is now a very happy, good luck inside kitty.

Pet: Professor Phineas and Hank Age: 4 Owner: Mac Vu Nguyen About our pet: We walked into the SPCA of Wake County because our youngest kid wanted a dog, and specifically, a beagle and just as luck and fate would have it, there was a bonded pair of beagles. We are big Disney fans, their names are Professor Phineas from the Haunted Mansion ride & the other is name Hank the sectopus (octopus) from the “Finding Dory” movie.

Pet: Otto Age: 1 Owner: Diane Englemohr About our pet: Otto is a foster fail. He was found roaming the streets and we were contacted to foster. Otto came into our home and has completely won over our hearts with his kindness, sweetness and energy. He loves his brother, Matthew, and you can find them together all the time snuggling and playing.

Pet: Uno Age: 2 Owner: Cassi Parker About our pet: JoCo’s very own famous goat! With over half a million followers on TikTok, Uno the Goat draws attention everywhere he goes! This orphaned goat, rescued from Benson, made his debut on social media with a whopping 60 million views with his first video catching the eye of celebrities who commented how much they loved him! Uno enjoys all the pet friendly places JoCo has to offer! One of his favorites is Tractor Supply in Selma!

Pet: Scarlet Ivy Age: 1.5 Owner: Christy Mitteldorfer About our pet: Scarlet Ivy goes to work every day with mom at Christy’s Boutique. She loves everyone that comes in to see her!

Pet: Lilly Age: 5 months Owner: Gina Freeman About our pet: Lilly is the sweetest. She loves to eat and play outside.

Pet: Morticia Esco Hayes Age: 12 Owner: Lindsey Hayes About our pet: Morticia is a 12-year-old Chorkie. She lives with her parents and brother in Four Oaks. She loves to take naps and sunbathe when it is pretty outside. Don’t let her age fool you, she is still full of spunk and sass and brings joy to her family everyday.

Pet: Romeo Age: 8 Owner: Liz Perez About our pet: Romeo is my eight-year-old double golden goofball. I rescued him four years ago from Tennessee and he immediately knew North Carolina was his forever home. He loves cuddles with the family, stuffed animals and road trips.

Pet: Elvira Age: 1 Owner: Erin Jernigan About our pet: I got Elvira when she was eight weeks old. She was part of a litter of puppies that were being re-homed. I was told she was supposed to be a Dorgi. I got a Chiweenie!

What is funny about El is that the front half looks like Daschund and the back half is Chihuahua. She is spoiled, loves cuddles and giving the side eye when she doesn't get her way.

Pet: Odie Pie Jones Age: 16 Owner: Amanda Jones About our pet: Odie is 16 years old and was rescued from a family that couldn’t keep him, We took him in and he has been a wonderful part of our family for around 13 years now. He loves treats and hugs.

Odie is a great and loved part of our family.

Pet: Rosco Age: 1.5 Owner: Cody Clayton About our pet: Rosco is a laid back boy. He loves his walks during the day and sleeping under his covers at bedtime!

Pet: Teach Age: 3 Owner: Dee Biggs About our pet: Teach was rescued by Maggie Society in Wilson. We adopted him a year ago. He’s half Shih Tzu and half pitty, and he’s the sweetest boy!

Pet: Enzo Age: 3 Owner: Angela Perry About our pet: Enzo is a border collie who loves playing fetch with his frisbee and enjoys a good round of chuck it ball. He’s a sweet boy that competes in UpDog and Skyhoundz with his mama and is the apple of her eye.

Pet: Gunner Age: 5 Owner: Robyn Hinnant About our pet: This is Gunner, who loves everyone. He loves to give hugs and, if you are on your phone, he will hit it with his paw because he wants all of your attention. He also loves car rides and seeing cows.

Pet: Leo Age: 4.5 Owner: Loretta Byrd About our pet: Leo was named for my Daddy, Leonard. While not officially trained to be a service dog, he is by my disabled husband’s side all day.

Leo is a Malti Shu. Leo loves the music on the TV station PBS. His favorite show is “Antique Road Show.” When the intro music comes on, he will hold his head up and howl. It appears he is singing to the music. As with most dog owners, Leo is loved beyond measure and he is a huge part of our family.

Pet: Manny and Phoebe Age: 12 and 7 Owner: Vicki Vogel About our pet: Manny is my first French bull dog, and my one and only male dog.

He is a purebred frenchie, and has all the qualities and characteristics of a French Bull Dog. Phoebe is our rescue Frenchie. She was a hot mess when we adopted her, but she is thriving now. She and Manny are besties and truly love one another.

Pet: Cam Age: 5 Owner: Tiffany Schiller About our pet: Cam (the yellow lab) came to me as a foster from the Darlington County Humane Society in 2021. A year before considering fostering, I lost one of my other pups and the brindle in the picture with Cam kept looking for her sister. So I started fostering and had three more before Cam came to me. He does flyball, FastCAT and is a therapy dog. Finding your next fur baby is amazing, but when they find you, there are no words for it.

Pet: Hank Age: 5 months Owner: Nicole Kincaid About our pet: Hank is only about 5 months old and was picked up as a stray on the streets of Raleigh. He had most likely spent a good part of his beginning of his life in a crate and now he is living his best life. He is the biggest goofball and is silly all the time and is adored by our whole family

Pet: Wrigley Age: 13 Owner: Michell Boyette About our pet: My sweet Wrigley is 13 years old. I’ve had him ever since he was born, and he has been a lifesaver and the greatest friend through everything I’ve been through the past 13 years. He used to be playful and energetic, but now he’s spunky, kinda grumpy, loves treats, sleeps the day away and loves all the pets he can get! We truly don’t deserve a dog’s love and I don’t know what I’d do without him!

She has been a true blessing to us both, but especially for me. I have been going through some depression the last few years and since getting this little lady so much of that has lifted. She makes me laugh, she also can be so stubborn at times, but I truly believe that this little angel is my own personal gift from God.

Pet: Dolly Age: 3 Owner: Briana Mullen About our pet: Dolly is a Great Pyrenees that I rescued from the animal shelter in December.

She was so timid of many things including the outdoors and it was obvious she had never been trained to do anything. I took on a big responsibility having to teach a three-year-old dog EVERYTHING that you would teach a puppy, but with lots of patience and repetition she has become the best dog!

Pet: Karma and Destiny Age: 1 and 6 months Owner: Michael Renteria About our pet: Karma and Destiny are two extra-happy, extra-friendly doggos that just love to explore and play.

Commonly referred to as Yin and Yang, they often balance each other out with cuteness and mischievousness. They’re a vital part of the mental health awareness movement and often times spotted in local parades.

Pet: Sailor Age: 5 Owner: Melissa Palmer About our pet: Our sweet boy, Sailor, is five years old and lives up to his name! His first sailing adventure last fall was a success!

He made a great crew member.

He loves to snuggle, play with others and enjoys long walks on the trail. Adopted as a young puppy from a local rescue, and trained using the Sally Said So program, he is a loving and wellmannered pup who we adore!

Pet: Bruno Age: 1.5 Owner: Khristie Starling About our pet: Bruno is a Frenchton, 3/4 french bulldog and 1/4 Boston terrier, and loves playing fetch. His name came from the movie, “Enchanto,” and the song, "We Don't Talk About Bruno." It was funny because we always talk about him because of his big ears and loveable personality.

Pet: Charming Age: 5 Owner: Victoria Padgett About our pet: We adopted Charming in June 2020. He had been in foster care and was having a hard time finding a home due to not liking other animals. Charming loves people, though, and he wants to be the center of attention at all times.

He is the best cuddle buddy anyone could ever ask for. Him being over 70 pounds does not stop him from thinking he is a lap dog.

Pet: Luna Age: 7 Owner: Kaitlyn Free About our pets: Luna is a very energetic Jack Russell Terrier.

She has a spot on her side that resembles the moon, hence the name Luna. We have taught her numerous tricks that she looks forward to doing for treats.

Going outside and for car rides are her favorite!

Everyday when I come home from work, she greets me in the driveway and as soon as I open my car door, she hops inside the car and welcomes me home. Cali is a sweetie. She has a following on Facebook. She has Tortitude like no other.

Pet: Duchess Age: 6 months Owner: Logan Mott About our pet: Duchess is one of a kind. She is full of energy and spunk. She is very loyal and loves her family. In her free time, she enjoys going bird hunting, riding on the boat and getting belly rubs. Her favorite treat is frozen peanut butter balls.

Pet: Jury Age: 6 Owner: Stephanie Hufnagle About our pet: He's my best buddy and has been by my side for almost six years now. I got him right after I passed the bar, and as a lawyer that tries to avoid court, he is hopefully the only Jury I ever plead a case to!

Pet: Thelma and Louise Age: 4 Owner: Helena Lynster About our pet: Thelma and Louise are very happy, Thelma is more quiet, while Louise is extremely active. They are very smart and love people, and they love to get dressed up.

Pet: Ace Age: 18.5 Owner: Katie Crowder About our pet: Ace the beagle was the best boy! I got Ace when I was a freshman in college. He loved getting in the trash and snuggling under his red blanket. He was always up for a ride but he did expect the window to be down, no matter the temperature, so he would feel the wind in his ears. He lived longer than expected due to spit and popcorn and when he crossed the rainbow bridge he left a beagle size hole in my heart.

Pet: Ruby Age: 8 months Owner: Kerry Smith About our pet: This is Ruby, she is a Sphinx baby. She is a true character and a real creep. Yes, you read that right, a creep. She lurks on the stairs just waiting to leap at your feet. Honestly the life insurance does not benefit her, but my husband thinks I am training her. She will stalk you under the bed and snatch your ankle anytime she can. If you dare to leave any food she will pounce and finish it for you. She is a girl after my own heart an avid coffee lover, and yes, she steals that, too.

Someone found him and turned him in to the Turkish rescue which works closely with NRGRR in NC. They rescued him, and I was able to foster and adopt him at 17 months old. His name in Turkish means "Dew from Heaven" and "My Lamb." He is definitely both of those to me! After living his first year and a half outside, he is now living his best life in our home with his doggie sister Callie.

Why is my dog itching?

This month I celebrate my 48th birthday.

Which is a sobering thought, as it’s just shy of 50. Fifty years is half a century!

Some say age is just a number, but trust me so much happens to your body as you age. Every day I notice new age spots or new wrinkles, another joint pain or a new gray hair. I notice things I’ve accomplished and yet I know there’s so much more I want to do in this one life.

his is a question we are asked several times a day, especially over the last 4-8 weeks. You may even have a dog that’s itching — as a dog-dad of five furballs myself, I can tell you it’s not fun watching your dog spend the afternoon (or afternoons) scratching an itch that just won’t go away.

Sound familiar?

Here’s a few tips on how to narrowdown what could be making your dog itch.

Is your dog itching year-round, or just certain times of the year? This is probably the best question to answer first. If your dog seems to be itching every day of the year regardless of the season — I would start looking at something your dog is ingesting and/ or coming into contact with daily. This could be food, treats, certain grass and seed pollens, your detergent and even that faux-stainless steel (sometimes other types too) water/food bowl.

Hint: Try an LID (Limited Ingredient Diet) food, or a food with a different protein from a different manufacturer.

Change your dog’s bowl for a week to see if the redness disappears around his mouth. Does your dog go to the neighbor’s kitty litter box each morning?

Guess what? That could be the culprit as well!

However, if your dog is only itchy or has dry skin at certain types of the year (for us in NC, this often means when you turn your home’s heat to AC, and AC to heat) there is a high likelihood that seasonal allergies are the problem.

Sometimes environmental allergies just can’t be avoided. I actually replanted my entire yard with a different grass seed in hopes of helping one of my dogs, but it didn’t help. This is when it’s time to call her veterinarian and get a Cytopoint shot.

Maybe your dog has dry skin? This time of year, almost every dog that comes into Just Dog People has dry skin.

I notice my own children and how fast the years of their youth are flying by. I notice my parents and the fact that they are aging faster than ever.

And so I’ve been contemplating a lot lately about aging and the value in capturing each day, each week or month and trying to make the very most of it. Regardless of your belief about the afterlife, we really only have this life to live as we know it.

It’s why in this past year I have doubled down on my personal boundaries and really standing up for my values and beliefs. I’m making strides to create a life I love living, not just trying to skirt through.

You can especially notice this on brown/ black dogs, and short-haired dogs as well.

What do we recommend? Try a warm bath, perhaps with an aloe-based shampoo along with a conditioner. For dogs, the conditioner isn’t just to make their hair shiny, it’s also to condition their skin. This is a great way to alleviate some forms of itching!

Sometimes it’s all in the genes and their first 8-12 weeks of life. Over the last nine years or so I’ve come to notice a common theme in dogs with allergies and weak bellies: Momma wasn’t able to deliver the puppy’s first round of ‘inoculations’ (mom’s milk).

While not scientific, I would estimate 95 out of 100 dogs who cross my path (as a dog nutrition consultant) have had an unfortunate start to life.

Often these dogs are raised without their mother or taken from their mother too soon. In fact, one of my five was the runt of her large litter (seven.) Bea was not able to get the same access to mom as the other puppies in her litter, and although we can’t prove this — we believe that her having thyroid issues could be connected.

It seems that when mom isn’t able to pass on the ‘good stuff’ puppies need in

their first precious weeks of life, their bellies are often left without the right biome required to digest/absorb/process the food going into them.

For these dogs, symptoms often appear as early as 12 weeks, while I would say most dogs that I see in the store for consultations are six to nine months old.

Tip: These puppies need strong probiotics — we often suggest petparents take home a $9 bottle of fermented goat’s milk to “test” our theory. Within about 7-10 days, mom and dad often see results such as: less gas, firm stool, increased energy and “playfulness” and possibly heightened energy to eat their food.

As always there are many considerations that go into diagnosing and helping a dog — always consult with your veterinarian if you think something is off about your dog.

Laser safety is an important concern when using either a surgical laser or a medical

laser. Inappropriate use of a laser can cause harm. All team members who provide laser therapy at Johnston Animal Hospital have undergone special training from AIMLA (the American Institute of Medical Laser Applications). Everyone in the room must wear eye protection when a laser is being used. People wear laser specific safety glasses. Pets wear laser specific safety goggles commonly known as “doggles” — much to every cat’s chagrin.

Cleveland wins third-straight County Easter crown

leveland toppled Midway, 7-4, in the championship game of the Johnston County Easter Invitational at South Johnston during Spring Break to win its third straight tournament title and 11th consecutive game in the event dating back to a first-round loss to Bunn in 2019.

“The championship game was a hard-fought game from both teams,” head coach Jamie Lee said. “Timely hitting was the key to scoring our runs and starting pitcher Jack Dalton made big pitches on the mound when he needed to.”

Dalton got the win, working 4.2 innings while allowing one earned run on a hit and striking out four.

Will Hicks provided much of the run support, homering twice and driving in three.
