DR. VERN LINDQUIST

Dear Johnston County Community, It is my pleasure to share with you a review of our past year, marked by significant milestones and forward strides. First and foremost, I am delighted to report that JCC has never, in its entire history, had more students than it does now.

This growth is a testament to the exceptional work of our faculty and staff, the relevance and quality of our academic programs, and the unwavering support from our community. Our students, both returning and new, continue to choose JCC for their higher education. In addition to our enrollment successes, we have completed our Facilities Master Plan.

This comprehensive blueprint for our campus’s future development ensures that we are not only meeting the current needs of our students and staff but also anticipating and preparing for future growth and advancements. The completion of this plan involved extensive consultation with stakeholders, including students, faculty, staff, and community members, ensuring that our facilities will support a vibrant and dynamic learning environment for years to come.

The progress we have made is a reflection of our shared commitment to excellence and the value we place on education as a cornerstone of our community’s future.

As we look ahead, I am confident that Johnston Community College will continue to thrive and serve as a beacon of opportunity and growth for all who come through our doors. JOCO COMMISSIONERS’ PROMISE

& NEXT NC

The JoCo Commissioners Promise is a last-dollar scholarship made possible by the Johnston County Commissioners. Johnston County Residents who earn a recent high school credential can attend JCC for up to four semesters tuition-free if they complete their admissions steps.

The Next NC Scholarship is a financial aid program that helps most North Carolinians from households making $80,000 or less pursue higher education by fully covering tuition and fees at any community college or more than half, if not all, of tuition and fees to attend any public university in the state.

Over the Summer, JCC and Johnston County Public Schools worked together to provide multiple opportunities to help students complete their FAFSAs and answer questions about financial aid.

DWIGHT BARNES Celebrating Excellence: Dwight Barnes, a distinguished Computer Integrated Machining Technology instructor, has been honored as Faculty of the Year by his peers and supervisors, reflecting his dedication to education and industry excellence.

FIRST IN STATE

From Biowork to Truck DrivingJCC’s innovative programs pave the way for career readiness!

The 2023-24 academic year was a year of many firsts for JCC. JCC was the first community college to offer BioWork certificate training in all the county’s public high schools. In total, 76 high school students completed the certificate.

JCC was the first in the state to offer truck driver training to eligible high school students through our College and Career Promise program.

Setting the standard with our first state-of-the-art Security Operations Center, JCC is shaping the future with innovative training programs.

CYBERSECURITY Johnston Community College was awarded $645,836 from the National Science Foundation (NSF) to establish its first cutting-edge Simulated Cyber Range Training Environment and additional funds from the Carolina Cyber Network to create a Security Operations Center. This initiative aims to bolster the college’s cybersecurity program, providing students with hands-on experience crucial for success in the rapidly evolving field of cybertechnology.

Johnston Community College is proud to celebrate the accomplishments of its 2024 graduates. Across the 2023 Summer, 2023 Fall, and 2024 Spring semesters, a total of 1,331 credentials were awarded, including 570 certificates, 86 diplomas, and 675 associate degrees.

Among these, 874 individual students earned at least one credential. At this year’s commencement, 387 students participated in the graduation ceremony at Campbell University, walking across the stage to mark this significant milestone in their academic journey.

JCC’s first Open House in several years was a smashing success, drawing in over 700 attendees! This family-friendly event highlighted all the amazing opportunities and resources our college offers to the community.

JCC is dedicated to serving its community in a number of ways. From personal enrichment programming to our Performing Arts series, the College is expanding its reach in Johnston County. During the 2023-24 academic year, we hosted Family Science Day, Juneteenth Jam, and much more.

More than 300 kids ranging in age from 6 to 18 took part in our Summer Camps in 2024. The camps teach children skills in the Culinary Arts, Engineering, Fine Arts and more.

In the fall of 2023, approximately 3,500 eighth-grade students had the opportunity to connect with more than 40 local industries at JOCO WORKS, an immersive career experience.

Launched in 2019, JOCO WORKS is an innovative, industry-led, collaboration between Triangle East Chamber of Commerce, Johnston Community College (JCC), Johnston County Public Schools (JCPS), Benson Chamber of Commerce, Clayton Chamber of Commerce, government, and various business leaders to meet the growing needs of the workforce in Johnston County. This program transforms ways JCPS eighth graders in Johnston County explore future careers. For students that already had a career path in mind, they received in-depth exposure into their desired field. Industries represented include biotechnology, manufacturing, construction, hospitality, and tourism.

Over the course of the 2023-24 academic year, JCC committed to having more educational programming at our Howell Woods Environmental Learning Center. The center has held educational programs for school districts, home school programs, summer enrichment, and more. The public is also welcome to explore the center’s miles of scenic trails and connect with wildlife. From interactive exhibits to guided nature tours, our center offers a unique opportunity for all ages to learn about and enjoy the natural world.

BREAKFAST BEFORE BUSINESS Novo Nordisk was named Johnston Community College’s 2023 Business and Industry Partner of the Year. JCC announces this award each year at its annual Breakfast Before Business, a signature networking event for professionals across our region. Novo Nordisk is a long-time partner of the College in Biopharmaceutical Workforce Training.

FOUNDATION REFLECTIONS On behalf of the Johnston Community College Foundation and Board of Directors I want to thank you for your support of our college and students over this past year. As I reflect on all the students’ lives we have been able to impact, I am honored to have played such an integral role. Last year we raised the minimum for endowments to $25,000 to make a bigger impact for students attending JCC. We also instituted the JAG Scholarship (JCC Award for Growth). These awards were a $500 scholarship given to students who may have decided to attend college late in the application process and were unable to obtain financial aid. These scholarships were able to give a boost to those students who may not have had the opportunity to further their education.

There are so many barriers for students wishing to attend college other than the tuition and books. Over the past year, we witnessed an uptick in the number of students needing emergency funding for rent, transportation, child care and many other areas where life has prevented them from being able to continue attending courses.

Food insecurity among our students is also on the rise. Working with our TRIO program, we have been able to secure funds this year to have Grab and Go stations across campus for students to have a healthy quick snack or meal prior to or between classes.

Over the last fiscal year, the Foundation’s assets have remained strong at $14,934,077. Contributions, event revenues, and in-kind gifts generated $1,417,968 for the 2023-2024 fiscal year. Your generosity in providing scholarships and funding for emergencies and food insecurities allows for our students to pursue career goals that enhance their quality of life, ultimately enhancing Johnston County’s economic growth and development. You also provide the opportunity for our staff and faculty to participate in professional development to stay up-to-date on the latest equipment and technology needed to assist our students.

Our Foundation staff and Board of Directors are truly grateful for each of you for continuing your support of Johnston Community College and we look forward to what the future holds for the college and Johnston County.

WOMEN’S SOCIETY SCHOLARSHIP LUNCHEON The Linda Vann Lassiter Women’s Society, founded in 2019, honors Linda Lassiter’s philanthropic spirit. Each year, a luncheon celebrates her legacy and recognizes community contributions. The 2024 Philanthropist of the Year, Carol Arnn, was honored for her years of service, including her work at Smithfield Manor and efforts to eradicate polio. Nearly $36,000 was donated in 2023-2024, and the Society’s endowments total almost $693,000. This year, eight young women from four I-95 corridor high schools received scholarships to attend JCC.

The Foundation hosted its second annual Casino Night and Reverse Raffle on Thursday, October 5, 2023. Nearly 200 guests enjoyed Blackjack, Poker, Craps, Roulette, and a chance to win $5,000! The evening’s theme, “Let’s Groove Tonight,” invited attendees to wear their best ‘70s attire.

Vic McCormick and Leigh Page were crowned Groovy King and Queen, winning $500 each for their stellar costumes.

The event raised over $18,000 to support programs like professional development grants, enrollment growth initiatives, and direct institutional support.

In the 2023-2024 academic year, the JCC Foundation provided over $344,000 in scholarships to 435 students, along with $50,000 in direct institutional support, $4,326 in student emergency aid, and $5,351 in professional development grants for faculty and staff. Each year, the Foundation also hosts an event to recognize the generous donors whose contributions make these opportunities possible.
