A LETTER FROM THE PRESIDENT Dr. Vern Lindquist

Dear Johnston County Community, I am humbled that the Johnston Community College Board of Trustees chose me last November as the fourth president of JCC, entrusting me with the leadership of this f ine institution.

The College has done some great things since I began this January. I am most proud of this fall’s record-breaking enrollment, which saw double-digit increases over last year and the largest class in JCC’s history.

We awarded more than 700 Johnston County high school graduates f ree tuition for their next two years at JCC through the JoCo Commissioners’ Promise program.

We opened our new campus instructional facility, the Luby & Catherine Wood Building, with state-of-the-art engineering and science facilities for our students.

We also reopened the Paul A. Johnson Auditorium with a stellar lineup of acts for the season.

JCC also welcomed Starbucks to campus this fall along with a new cafeteria vendor and access to healthier food options across multiple buildings.

We are in the process of completing a comprehensive Facilities Maser Plan with guidance f rom architects f rom LS3P and are working on an advanced manufacturing facility in Four Oaks with the help of the I-95/I-40 Crossroads of America organization.

But we do not intend to stop there.

With the growth of Johnston County and JCC itself, we are exploring ways to better serve every corner of our county and ensure that JCC is the college of choice for JoCo residents.

You can f ind the details of these and other accomplishments in the pages that follow. Please explore what JCC has to offer and join me in the positive momentum here at the College. Great things are happening, and I look forward to even greater things in the years to come.

TRANSFER STUDENTS - SET FOR SUCCESS!

Johnston Community College exceeded statewide excellence standards in two categories which measure student success across North Carolina’s community colleges annually. JCC ranked second among the 58 colleges in both First-Year Progression and in Transfer Performance. These areas demonstrate that f irst-year students at JCC are making excellent progress toward credential completion and that they perform well above average when they transfer to a four-year university or college.

“If you are looking to transfer f rom a community college to a four-year institution, the data f rom the North Carolina Community College System show that JCC sets you up for success,” says President Dr. Vern Lindquist.

“After graduating f rom JCC, I genuinely feel like I’m prepared for anything that is thrown at me f rom a four-year university,” says recent North Carolina State University transfer student BJ Alvares-Herrera.

“I have tailored my foundation to f it my major and area of interest. More importantly, JCC was able to accommodate my desires in learning and provide me with the experience I wanted,” Alvares-Herrera adds.

The First-Year Progression index scores are based on the percentage of f irst-time fall credential-seeking curriculum students graduated prior to or enrolled in postsecondary education the subsequent fall semester. Transfer Performance index scores are based on the percentage of community college students transferring to a four-year university or college during thefall semester who remain enrolled in a four-year institution the subsequent fall or graduate prior.

“These performance measures prove that community colleges, particularly JCC, provide quality education. A bonus of getting that great education at JCC is that it remains affordable, and in some cases can be tuition-f ree,” Lindquist added.

Staff Person of the Year

Natalie Oliver was awarded Educator of the Year by the North Carolina Council of Practical Nurse Educators (NCCPNE) at its biannual meeting.

Johnston Community College (JCC) Nursing Instructor Vicky Allen was named Educator of the Year by the North Carolina Associate Degree Nursing Council (NCADN Council).

Shenika Thorb, an administrative specialist at Johnston Community College, was named Outstanding Staff Person of the Year for 2023.

NCCPNE represents the community colleges of North Carolina that have practical nurse programs. Oliver was hired in October of 2021 to help start JCC’s new Practical Nursing program.

The NCADN Council is the advocate for associate degree nursing education and practice and promotes collaboration in charting the future of health education and delivery.

Each year, the JCC Staff Association solicits nominations f rom across campus. Shenika was nominated by several of her colleagues. One of them said, “Shenika is a wonderful colleague and team player.

Simply put, she gets stuff done.

She is highly organized and an invaluable asset to the team.”

The President’s Award goes to a graduating student who is nominated by faculty or staff and selected on the basis of outstanding scholastic achievement and leadership qualities. The student must have a cumulative grade point average of 3.25 or higher. Matthews, completed her Associate Degree in Emergency Medical Science, was an active member of TRIO and was Student Ambassador. She is currently pursuing her Bachelor of Science in Nursing degree through JCC and ECU’s transfer partnership.

The Academic Excellence Award is given by the North Carolina Community College System. The 2023 recipient was William Matthew Chilton.

Mr. Chilton came to JCC to pursue his degree in Applied Engineering Technology after serving in the military. He accepted a prestigious internship at Duke Energy and graduated f rom JCC in May with honors.

The Citizenship Award which is given to a graduating student who is selected on the basis of school leadership, service to fellow students, and participation in extracurricular activities. BJ Alvares-Herrera exhibited exceptional leadership by serving in multiple roles during his time at JCC. He is a member of the National Society of Leadership and Success, Phi Theta Kappa, and a number of other clubs on campus. He has served two terms as a College Ambassador. He is currently studying at North Carolina State University.

The Student Government Association Award is given to a student leader who has rendered the most outstanding service to his or her fellow students. This year’s recipient is Cody Peedin, 2022 - 2023 SGA President.

STATE-OF THE-ART: LUBY & CATHERINE

WOOD BUILDING Classes were held for the f irst time inside JCC’s new, state-of-the-art instructional facility.

The building houses labs, off ices, interactive classrooms, a theater-style lecture hall, and more.

The College’s expanding Associate in Engineering program and STEM-related disciplines are held in the building.

Luby and Catherine Wood’s generous contribution led to the naming of the JCC building in their honor. An off ice space in the building is also named for Herman and Dianne Lancaster.

JCC will operate a new Advanced Manufacturing Center in Four Oaks, a vision spearheaded by the I-95/I-40 Crossroads of American Economic Development Alliance.

The Crossroads Alliance was formed last year by leaders in the Town of Four Oaks and the City of Dunn to enhance inf rastructure, workforce readiness, product development and job growth in southern Johnston County and northern Harnett County.

This partnership is much like the Workforce Development Center in Clayton, where JCC partners with Grifols and Novo Nordisk to train students and potential employees in biopharmaceutical technologies.

The new Four Oaks training site will sit on 16 acres near Exit 87, across f rom the Four Oaks Business Park.

BACK IN BUSINESS! The Paul A. Johnston Auditorium re-opened after a f ive-year renovation. The 2023-2024 Donnie E. and Linda Vann Lassiter Performing Art Series kicked off with 15-time GRAMMY® Award-winner Ricky Skaggs and his band Kentucky Thunder.

Over this past year we have done great things for the many students’ lives we have enriched through your generosity and for this we are eternally thankful.

The mission of the community college system is to maximize our student success by minimizing barriers to education and training opportunities.

Your gifts have made a difference not only to these students, but also to our program areas by offering faculty and staff development to enhance the student’s educational experience.

Over the last f iscal year, the Foundation’s assets have remained strong at $13,699,519. Contributions, event revenues, and in-kind gifts generated $1,629,950 for 2022-2023 year.

Your generosity signif icantly enhances the opportunities available to our students for college attendance and our faculty and staff for professional development, program creation, and the acquisition of equipment that enriches our programs, directly benef iting our students.

The Linda Vann Lassiter Women’s Society was created in 2019 to honor the philanthropic spirit of Linda Lassiter.

Each year, a luncheon is held to remember Linda’s contributions and the contributions of those in our community.

2023’s Philanthropist of the Year was Lori Lee, who founded the Me Fine Foundation and the Gale Healthcare Foundation.

Lee founded Me Fine after her son’s death in 2004. Me Fine helps families whose children are experiencing a medical crisis.

The Gale Healthcare Foundation assists in the national shortage of healthcare professionals by offering scholarship opportunities to nursing professionals to further their education and training.

BBB PARTNER OF THE YEAR

Johnston County Public Schools (JCPS) was the 2022 Johnston Community College (JCC) Business and Industry Partner of the Year. JCC announced the award at its annual Breakfast Before Business, a signature networking event, which brings together local leaders and professionals to discuss career opportunities across the county.

JCPS partners with JCC year-round on programs like Career to College Promise, Career and Technical Leadership Academy, and JoCo Works.

FOUNDATION FUNDRAISING First Annual Casino Night Reverse Raffle The Johnston Community College Foundation sponsored its f irst Casino Night along with the annual reverse raffle on Thursday, October 6, 2022. A fun f illed evening of Blackjack, Craps, Poker, Roulette, and the chance to win $5,000 was enhanced by everyone dressing in the Roaring 20s.

Nearly 300 contributors attended the event held at the Tart Great Hall on JCC’s Main Campus. The best dressed flapper, Dion Hill and dapper, John Parrish each took home a $500 prize.

Over $44,000 f rom the Casino Night event helped to sustain programs including professional development grants, awards to faculty and staff for strategic projects to increase enrollment and enhance offerings, and direct institutional support.

NEW PARTNERSHIPS Enhance the Student Experience Canteen and Metz are now providing enhanced vendor and food options at JCC. The new cafe in Wilson will feature J. Clark’s Grille, Pizza Express, and Main Plate. Two Starbucks locations will open in 2023.

We are implementing a data warehouse software, ZogoTech, to help us better track and measure institutional outcomes and a customer relationship management software, Element 451, to enhance or communication with students.

Our partnership with BibliU will provide e-books for curriculum courses, which will save our students time and money.
