A Message from the President Greetings, It is a new day at Johnston Community College. There are endless opportunities to be had. I am pleased to be here and to present this annual report to our community.

Like many community colleges in our state, and across the country, JCC has had its share of challenges over the last couple of years.

While I have been Interim President just a short while, I can tell you for certain that the students, faculty, and staff are resilient and determined. They have met these challenges head-on and we are succeeding.

At the start of the fall 2022 semester, JCC had nearly 4,300 students enrolled. That is an increase of more than six percent over the previous year. That is worth celebrating and we do not plan to let up on our efforts to change lives.

The college is offering new classes, assisting students with tuition, and strategically positioning JCC as the first choice for those seeking higher education.

From basic skills to university transfers, there is something for everyone at JCC. We have flexible class schedules, fast-track courses, and new programs such as Supply Chain Management, Digital Media Technology, Mechanical Engineering, and Practical Nursing.

JCC also offers a variety of continuing education classes, which now include Beekeeping and Machining Computer Numerical Control Turn Operation.

We are living in one of the fastest growing counties in the state of North Carolina and will endeavor to provide excellent service to our community. The commitment to our community is embedded in our name and we pledge to live up to that mission.

Your support of your college is greatly appreciated and without that support we would not exist. We also invite you to tell us how we can make you successful.

Board of Trustees Message from Board Chair: Members of the JCC Community, As you likely know, we have begun the search for Johnston Community College’s fourth president. It is a duty that the Board of Trustees takes seriously and it is our honor to do so.

The Board enlisted Executive Leadership Associates (ELA) to assist in this search. ELA is comprised of seasoned consultants who will attract a talented, experienced, and diverse pool of leaders in higher education.

Your Board is committed to having an open and inclusive search, we are seeking community and campus input throughout the process.

Trustee Josh Thompson, chair, and Trustee Mary Daughtry, vice-chair, are leading the search committee. The committee includes representatives from key constituencies, including the Board, faculty, staff, the College Foundation, and the County Commissioners. You may have the utmost confidence the search committee will ensure a thorough and impartial process.

We are eager to host the finalists on campus and to announce a new President of Johnston Community College. We expect the search to be complete by the end of 2022. Thank you for entrusting all of us with this important task. We are confident our next leader will set JCC up for great success.

JCC Alumni Association & Graduation Mixer Honors Student Expos Fall & Spring

P.A.C.E. Johnston Community College’s regional accreditation body, The Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Commission on Colleges (SACSCOC), requires accredited institutions to undergo a comprehensive decennial review.

As part of that review, accredited institutions are to plan, implement, and report on a Quality Enhancement Plan, or QEP. As JCC undergoes it’s accreditation reaffirmation this year, it is also implementing its next five-year QEP which is called P.A.C.E Yourself: Progress, Advising, and Campus Engagement in the First Year.

A QEP is designed to enhance student learning and/or student success. We dedicate people, time, and resources to setting goals and assessments for the QEP.

One of the initiatives that came out of the QEP is called “Journeying Jags.”

This is a group made up of faculty staff, and students who wear special shirts the first two weeks of class to help students find their way.

We also held a design contest for students to help create the QEP logo.

Auditorium Update The Paul A. Johnson Auditorium is re-opening in the fall of 2022. The auditorium has undergone a complete renovation and is ready to be used for community events once again.

ESports

If you haven’t heard of it yet, you will. Esports is organized, competitive video gaming that is growing by leaps and bounds.

JCC’s team was formed during the pandemic.

In the spring of 2022, Will Jackson became the National Junior College Athletic Associations’ (NJCAAE) Rocket League Champion. Rocket League is a video game which combines soccer and vehicles.

Jackson says there is a perception that video gamers are “just basement dwellers,” but that he and the rest of the Esports team “are pioneers.”

“We are really the first generation to make it happen and make it a real sport,” Jackson says.

Our Stories Student Success Story At the age of 17, BJ Alvares-Herrera was left alone.

“My mother, the person I loved the most, passed away in the summer of 2020. Shortly after, my father abandoned me. I don’t have any siblings, so there was no one to look after me,” he says.

BJ was in the International Baccalaureate program at his high school, but he had to work 40 hours a week to support himself.

“I was under a lot of pressure to work in order to keep a roof over my head. I wasn’t even sure if I should finish high school. We all faced great challenges during the wake of a global pandemic, but COVID was just another factor amid the devastation I faced in my life at that time. I didn’t feel I had anything to look forward to,” BJ recalls.

BJ says his co-workers encouraged him to look for financial assistance so he could to go to college.

“Financially, I knew it would be a challenge, but I pressed forward,” he adds.

BJ applied to Johnston Community College and to the Student Ambassador program, which awards scholarships and leadership opportunities through the College’s Foundation.

“What appealed to me most about the role, was the opportunity to represent my school, and the opportunity to participate in community service projects. I’ve always been passionate about community service. I know how it feels to be the person in need, so giving back to help others genuinely makes me happy,” BJ says. Along with being a Student Ambassador, he is a manager at his job. When asked how he balances all that, he says, “The beauty of this whole thing is embracing the fact that there is not a balance. You have to do what you have to do to be where you want to be. It’s not always pretty. There might not be a balance.”

BJ will graduate from JCC in December of 2022 with an associate degree. He plans to transfer to NC State or UNC-Chapel Hill where he would like to study psychology, to be a clinical therapist.

BJ says he is motivated by the will “to live again; to survive; to make my mother and myself proud.”

His advice to anyone thinking about continuing their education is to “think of your future self and make that person proud.”

Alumni Spotlight “My favorite thing about working here is the people that I work with.”

Jennifer Cable married her high school sweetheart in 2011. Her husband joined the military and they were stationed at Seymour Johnson Air Force Base. Jennifer took a break from her education to raise their son.

Jennifer attended a Career in a Year event at JCC in 2017 and heard about our medical office assisting program. “Being in the military I wanted something I could do anywhere so I thought medical office assistant would be a good fit,” Jennifer says.

Even better, she could complete the entire program online while she stayed home with their toddler. She also received a scholarship which helped cover the cost of one semester.

By November of 2018, Jennifer was a work study in JCC’s Research and Institutional Effectiveness division. The next year she was a work study in Career Services and then she graduated.

“I enjoyed working with Research and IE so much I wanted to apply for a job,” Jennifer says.

Shortly after graduation, she was hired full-time as the Administrative Assistant to the Vice President of Research and Institutional Effectiveness. “I like being able to be in a supportive role where I can help others do their job more efficiently or effectively,” she says.

Jennifer says she really enjoys being part of the JCC family. “My favorite thing about working here is the people that I work with, especially in my office,” she says.

Jennifer’s husband is working toward becoming a military officer, so she knows moving is always a possibility. However, she adds, “if we do not move I would like to still be working here.”

When she is not working or spending time with her family, Jennifer enjoys reading. The Cables also have three dogs, a cat, and a bird. Jennifer is a member of the JCC Alumni Association.

Award-Winning Graduates Each year, Johnston Community College hands out three awards at graduation: • • •

President’s Award Citizenship Award Academic Excellence Award

Academic Excellence Award Seham Saleh was recognized for this award.

Saleh graduated with an Associate of Science degree. She was also the Secretary of the Student Government Association and participated in many other campus activities.

2022 President’s Award Crystal Gift was recognized for this award.

Gift is a radiography graduate, who was recognized for her stellar academic record and demonstrated leadership.

Citizenship Award Dorien Ruffin was recognized for this award.

While Ruffin represented the Jaguar Men’s Basketball Team, he was also an Ambassador, a member of the Black Student Alliance, and a mentor at Innovations Academy.

Faculty of the Year Cynthia “Cindy” Sullivan was named JCC’s Faculty of the Year for the 2020-2021 school year.

Sullivan is entering her 18th year as a Criminal Justice instructor at JCC, which is also her alma mater. Sullivan attended JCC before transferring to East Carolina University. There, she received her bachelor’s and master’s degrees. Sullivan practiced criminal justice for several years and then returned to teach at Johnston Community College.

Sullivan was nominated for the school’s highest faculty honor.

Sullivan serves on the following JCC committees: Faculty Association, Curriculum Committee, Academic Awareness Task Force, and the Quality Enhancement Plan Assessment Subcommittee. She also volunteered to work on the SPICE program to mentor new instructors.

BCBSNC Visit Representatives from BlueCross BlueShield of North Carolina and its Foundation, along with journalists from EdNC, visited Johnston Community College’s campus during a tour of some of the state’s community colleges.

They participated in a roundtable discussion with leaders from JCC and the local business community about how critical community colleges are in training the state’s workforce. The BCBSNC Foundation donated $5,000 to JCC.

Funding the Future in BioTech Johnston Community College was awarded a $635,012 Advanced Technological Education (ATE) grant from the National Science Foundation (NSF) to expand its Bio Blend program.

The first NSF ATE award received by the college was titled Integrating Biotechnology and Applied Engineering to Meet Emerging Advanced Technological Workforce Needs (DUE #1901960). The funded pilot project is better known as Bio Blend, which blended applied engineering and biotechnology curriculum. The pilot was so successful, Johnston Community College and local industry partners saw the need to expand the program.

Bio Blend 2.0 (Expanding Multi-Skilled STEM Technicians Pipeline to Meet Industry Needs -DUE # 2201663) aims to provide the unique curriculum to all Applied Engineering and Bioprocess Technology degree students, instead of just a small cohort. The project will also address the need to increase diversity and inclusion in the STEM field as it relates to the neurodivergent population with a specific emphasis on individuals with autism.

Local educators will help identify individuals with autism who are interested in the program. Local employers have agreed to provide internships and to promote a neurodivergent work environment by encouraging staff to attend JCC-sponsored training provided by local autism services providers.

Another aspect of the program is that DeltaV training will be expanded and embedded into the curriculum. DeltaV is the distributed control system used by many biotech companies. Johnston Community College already offers certification in DeltaV operations.

Bio Blend 2.0 will allow students

to enter the workforce with the necessary training to build our local multi-skilled STEM Technician Pipeline.

EDA Visit In May of 2022, representatives from the U.S. Economic Development Administration (EDA), along with some of the state’s top leaders in education and business, visited JCC’s Workforce Development Center in Clayton for a roundtable discussion.

The NCBiotech coalition was awarded nearly $25 million, pending State Board approval from the EDA’s “Build Back Better Regional Challenge.” JCC will benefit directly from over $1.4 million to bolster its Life Sciences and Biotechnology programs. The coalition is led by the North Carolina Biotechnology Center and is comprised of a collaborative of North Carolina Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs), other universities, ten community colleges, and the state Department of Commerce.

Duke Energy Foundation Grant Johnston Community College’s Three in One: Plant, Harvest and Dine program received a $15,000 grant from the Duke Energy Foundation.

The program consists of three courses: Agriculture, Beekeeping, and Culinary Techniques.

The college will use the funds to construct raised beds, purchase bees and other culinary equipment for the program at the Arboretum.

Coursework also includes an introduction to JCC’s Small Business Center to assist future farmers, beekeepers, and foodservice establishments in small business development and management.

Chef Robert Carver, who leads the college’s Culinary Arts program, partnered with local high school art classes to have the new bee hives painted. He also asked Welding Instructor Robert Long’s class to help him with his vision for the one-of-a-kind frame the hives are housed in.

Together, they built a nine-foot frame and used a waterjet to create a honeycomb design. Chef Carver stated the honeycombs can be hung on the frame which has other schools wanting to copy the design.

Federal Funds Help Students and College Bounce Back Johnston Community College received funding this fiscal year from the Higher Education Emergency Relief Fund (HEERF), to support COVID-19 relief, in three categories: Student Emergency Aid, Institutional Aid, and the Strengthening Institutions Program (SIP). The funding was cumulatively provided through the CARES Act, Coronavirus Response and Relief Supplemental Appropriations Act (CRRSAA), and American Rescue Plan Act federal funds (ARPA).

Over $5,971,000 was awarded directly to students in the form of emergency grants to assist in covering expenses related to the cost of attendance

(i.e., tuition, food, housing, health care including mental health, transportation or childcare) or for emergency costs that arise due to coronavirus. These funds were expended by June 30, 2022.

The college used SIP funds to replace lost revenue from the Child Development Center, bookstore, vending, grill, facility rentals and canceled summer camps and student fees. The college also discharged some student debt incurred during the pandemic. These funds were fully expended in March of 2022.

Institutional Aid from HEERF can be used “for a variety of institutional costs connected to the pandemic, including lost revenue, reimbursement for eligible expenses already incurred, technology costs associated with a transition to distance education, faculty and staff trainings, and payroll costs associated with the pandemic.” This money can be spent through June 30, 2023.

This past fiscal year the Foundation’s assets held steady at $13,045,075 as of June 30, 2022. Contributions, event revenues, and in-kind gifts generated $2,643,906, in comparison to $1,527,910 during the prior year.

Many of the opportunities highlighted in this publication would not be possible without support from donors like you. These gifts directly promote the College and its mission, fund student scholarships, support faculty and staff in the development of innovative programming, and assist students during times of emergency need.

Breakfast Before Business Business and Industry Partner of the Year: Johnston County Sheriff’s Office The Johnston County Sheriff’s Office was named the 2021 Business and Industry Partner of the Year during the annual Breakfast Before Business event hosted by the JCC Foundation and local Johnston County Chambers in March 2022.

“Johnston Community College Public Safety Department is very appreciative of the support that has been shown to us from Sheriff Steve Bizzell and the Johnston County Sheriff’s Office,” said Kim Robertson, Assistant Vice President of Public Safety Programs.

“He is very dedicated to ensuring the students in our schools see what great opportunities Johnston Community College has to offer.”

Linda Vann Lassiter Women’s Society Philanthropist of the Year

The Johnston Community College Foundation hosted the fourth annual Linda Vann Lassiter’s Women’s Society luncheon on May 5, 2022.

The celebration recognizes the nominees and winner of the Philanthropist of the Year Award. This honor is awarded to an individual who has made a positive impact in the community and whose philanthropic leadership sets an inspiring example for all.

This year’s winner is Janet Daughtry of Selma. Daughtry has led various mission efforts for nearly 20 years. She and her husband, Scott, have worked as team coordinators for Baptist On Mission.

They have funded and led disaster recovery efforts across the country and abroad, while ministering to those in need. Mrs. Daughtry is also a master basket weaver and has taught others to weave as a source of income. She is an active member of the Johnston County Shrine Club and has contributed to numerous charity projects at the Shriners Hospitals for Children.

2022 Philanthropist of the Year Nominees also included Carol Arnn, Sarah Edwards, and Joy Holland Woodard.

The Linda Vann Lassiter Women’s Society was established in 2019 to honor the late Linda Vann Lassiter, who served on the board of the Johnston Community College Foundation. Members of the Society share gifts of their time, talents, and annual financial contributions to the Linda Vann Lassiter Women’s Society Endowment Fund, which currently stands at more than $600,000 and supports 8th grade scholarships.

Foundation Employee Campaign The annual Johnston Community College Employee Campaign gives faculty and staff the opportunity to give together as one college to support the growth and advancement of the College.

Employees came together to build excitement around the campaign by participating in a “Snack and Stack Kickback” fellowship, a virtual bingo game, and surprise visits from “Jagger” the Jaguar.

Last year, 174 employees gave a total of $43,993 to support student scholarships, professional development opportunities, and academic technology. Steady and reliable support provided through employee payroll deductions help to maintain ongoing funding for various campus initiatives throughout the year.

JCC Alumni Association

The JCC Alumni Association honored charter members during the inaugural JCC Alumni Association Induction Ceremony on September 23, 2021. Alumni that joined the Association from its inception in March 2019 through June 30, 2021, received a certificate, lapel pin, and a gift bag to commemorate their membership.

Special guest speakers honored charter members for their loyalty and investments of their time, talent, and treasure in establishing the Association, followed by the reading of the Membership Oath. During the ceremony, JCC alumnae, Alison Beal, was posthumously inducted as her parents, Jeremy Beal and Lana Wyatt, and brother, Carter, accepted her certificate of induction. Alison was the first female to graduate from the Engineering program at JCC. The ceremony was followed with a reception for the honorees and their guests. The JCC Alumni Association currently meets virtually every first Tuesday of the month at 6:00pm EST. If you completed a course at JCC, you are invited to invest in the future of JCC by engaging and building with fellow Jaguars while receiving benefits and recognition as a member of the JCC Alumni Association.
