After a decade as President of Johnston Community College, I can honestly say that I’ve never been more proud or appreciative of our community than I am right now. Facing a global pandemic, the entire Jaguar Team called upon deep reservoirs of resilience and perseverance to keep excellence in motion. (Full details of our COVID response can be found on page 4.) Despite unprecedented challenges in historic times, JCC truly came together as One College to keep creating Endless Opportunities for all who entrust their educational careers to us.

As a result of the safety precautions in place during the wake of COVID-19, JCC’s spring 2020 graduates could not participate in a traditional in-person ceremony. Therefore, to formally recognize the commendable achievements, resilience, and perseverance of the Class of 2020, our College leadership, faculty, and staff created a new celebratory experience by holding multiple drive-thru events and a virtual ceremony that was live-streamed on Facebook.

This year JCC also entered into a time of reconciliation, inclusion, and diversity awareness by participating in training entitled “6 Stages of Cultural Mastery.” In light of current circumstances, our efforts were prescient. However, we still have much work to do in terms of race relations.

Becoming culturally skilled will help us lead our community to terms of endearment with those who are different from ourselves.

JCC continued to bear the fruits of many collaborative partnerships with our 4-year colleagues, especially our dual admission partners at NCSU, ECU, UNCW and UNCFS. The Associate in Engineering program now has an articulation agreement with Sweet Briar College in Virginia, one of only two degree-granting engineering programs at women’s colleges in the U.S. Most recently, JCC signed an agreement with Western Governors and we are finalizing an agreement with Campbell University.

NCSU accepted three of our engineering graduates as Goodnight Scholars, which guaranteed admission and full scholarships. NCSU also

entered into a separate dual admission agreement for those at JCC who desire to be teachers in Johnston County. The unique program between JCC and NCSU, signed in 2019, will assist in the growing need for public school teachers in the county. As you’ll read in our story about STUDIO T on page 7, JCC is helping local public-school teachers create dynamic content for online coursework – some of which is done on technological equipment actually built by JCC engineering students!

Thanks to our many Johnston County residents who saw the need to support program growth at JCC, a local $15 million bond was passed. This money will be used to construct a new engineering building on the campus. Design work has already begun and we look forward to an opening by spring of 2022. JCC also completed construction and renovation of a new Student Success Center. This facility supports all the educational needs of our students in one location. The Center was opened in the fall of 2019. After multiple postponements due to the pandemic, a dedication ceremony is slated for spring 2021.

The future is always underway at JCC! Our proposed new entrance for the College will be a focus in coming months. We are creating plans for a major expansion in Clayton. New programs of study in Licensed Practical Nursing (LPN), Digital Media Technology, Health and Fitness Science, Supply Chain Management, and Applied Engineering Technology are all in some phase of development and approval.

In reviewing this issue of the Community Report, I hope you will conclude, as I have, that JCC continues to redefine excellence even as we navigate one of the most challenging times in recent history. The mass migration to online learning in the Spring of 2020 taught many in higher education that innovation and compassion are essential in keeping us connected. Indeed, this philosophy has served JCC well for more than 50 years.

The Coronavirus responsible for the 2020 global pandemic impacted the world in ways previously unimaginable. Facing tremendous uncertainties during an unprecedented time, Johnston Community College moved quickly and thoughtfully to minimize the risk of exposure to our students, employees, and the public. An emergency management team (EMT) was immediately convened to enact an emergency operation plan. The main JCC campus and area centers were closed on March 19, 2020.

The entire JCC community received regular updates on the College’s response to COVID-19, along with prevention tips, resources, and travel advisories recommended by the Centers for Disease Control. As a result of the emergency closing, adjustments were made to operate day-to-day functions remotely. A trusted leader in online learning for over two decades, JCC was able to seamlessly transition most of our face-to-face lectures to online platforms during the shutdown.

Student services – including advising, tutoring, and counseling – were made available through electronic platforms to ensure continuous access to success. The Foundation established a Student Emergency Support Fund to raise private support for students in critical need of funding for items such as technology, food, emergency utility bills, and toiletries.

In addition to tangible resources, there was also a critical need for in-person support. To address the need for care and mentoring outside of class time, TRIO Program Director Felita Carr initiated a Cyber Café “virtual space” for TRIO students.

To celebrate the Class of 2020, graduation was held via multiple drive-thru processions and a virtual ceremony was live-streamed on Facebook. (See full story in this issue.)

The College continues to closely monitor the factors associated with COVID-19, taking all possible preventative measures to minimize the potential risk of campus transmission.

JCC’s Jaguar Office of Learning Technologies (JOLT) is actively collaborating with instructors from Johnston County Public Schools on how to create engaging online materials with emerging technology. The program provides direct access to state-of-the-art equipment to help teachers design and deliver quality online content.

The inaugural cohort is comprised of teachers from the Early College Academy (ECA) and the Career & Technical Leadership Academy (CTLA), both of which operate on the JCC campus. Starting in September, they have the further option to pursue a full certification course called BRITE (Basic Requirements for Instructional Technology Effectiveness).

Inside STUDIO T, which stands for Specialized Training Unit for the Development of Innovative Online Teaching, educators have ample opportunities to be learners. In addition to training and consultation with an instructional designer, they have dedicated spaces for video editing and audio recording equipment.

taaNkB΄t¶¯΄k*Î΄ tB i¢ Meeting the growing demand for skilled employees in Johnston County and beyond.

Johnston Community College rolled out an Associate in Applied Sciences in Mechanical Engineering Technology (MET) degree in the fall.

The hands-on program will prepare students with skill development in engineering principles, applied mechanics, computer-aided design, computeraided manufacturing, 3D printing, and oral/written communication.

Graduates from the MET program can transfer to a four-year engineering technology program to obtain a bachelor’s degree, while anticipating a wide-range of employment opportunities in the fast-growing field of design and development.

Additional new program offerings this year include: Practical Nursing; Digital Media Technology; Health & Fitness Science; and, Supply Chain Management.

JCC's commitment to student success is demonstrated by providing high-quality courses and educational opportunities that meet the high demand for skilled employees in Johnston County and beyond.

They also have access to JCC’s latest investment, Blackboard Collaborate, an embedded webconferencing tool that transforms the online teaching environment with interactive features such as video chat discussions and instant live polls.

But the high-tech tool in highest demand seems to be the “Lightboard,” a clear glass structure on which instructors can write while still facing the screen.

Although the Lightboard seems like space-age prop from a Sci-Fi film, the real-life version in STUDIO T was built by students from JCC’s Associate in Engineering Degree Program and Industrial Technologies Program.

Lance Gooden, chair of JCC’s Department of Mathematics and Engineering, says the students, along with the expert guidance of faculty, ended up creating the first ADA-compliant Lightboard in the world. Their experiential-learning project – with real-world impact – was made possible by funds from the Associate of Engineering Program while the professional development and implementation of the Lightboard Studio was supported by the JCC Foundation. ̘̑̏̐Ͳ̑̏̑̏΄ tii¶kN¯Ô΄ * t ¯΄΄χ΄΄̖

The inaugural JOCO WORKS Career Expo was held Nov. 14-15, 2019 at Johnston Community College. Presented by Novo Nordisk, JOCO WORKS is an industry-led collaborative supported by education, business, civic, and government partners created to meet the Johnston County (JOCO) workforce needs of the future.

Collaborative partners for the event included Johnston County Public Schools, Johnston County Economic Development, Neuse Charter School, Triangle East Chamber of Commerce, Triangle East Economic Development Foundation, Clayton Chamber of Commerce, Benson Chamber of Commerce, Greater Cleveland Chamber of Commerce, Kenly Chamber of Commerce, Four Oaks Chamber of Commerce, and the towns of Johnston County.

“I’m honored to be part of this. To see all of these organizations working together for the good of the county and for the good of our youth is just a phenomenal experience,” said Mike Mancuso, President and CEO of Triangle East Chamber of Commerce.

Over 70 companies represented industries in agriculture; biotechnology; construction; healthcare; hospitality, tourism and retail; information technology; manufacturing; public works and safety; transportation; and, workforce resources. Each industrial category served as a “World of Work” and each “world” included sample occupations, general education requirements, and average salaries to get students interested in these career pathways.

] ΄k i*¢΄ ¶¢Nk*¢¢΄π΄ Nk$¶¢¯ Ô΄ ¯k* ¢΄At ΄̇̅̇̅ Grifols and Johnston County EMS Honored at Annual Breakfast Before Business.

During the Annual Breakfast Before Business event on February 6, 2020, Grifols and Johnston County Emergency Medical Services (JCEMS) were announced as JCC’s Business & Industry Partners for 2020.

Grifols has been a longstanding partner with JCC. Together, we’ve teamed up to create curricula for current and future employees of Grifols and surrounding industry leaders. In 2018, we established the Johnston County Apprenticeship Program.

Grifols has donated equipment and supplies to JCC at both the Workforce Development Center and the Advanced Technology Center for Student Learning. The company also continues to support the JCC Foundation in providing annual scholarships to current students.

Johnston County EMS has been a dynamic supporter of JCC’s Emergency Medical Services Program. The department has also been generous in loaning radios, heart monitors, ambulances and other equipment for training exercises when needed.

JCEMS and JCC often work hand-in-hand at job fairs and school visits to cross-promote careers and training opportunities in emergency medical services. Both organizations support and encourage new ideas in workforce development, such as providing EMT classes at the high-school level.

In his remarks, Dr. Johnson expressed the importance of JCC’s relationship with leading industries. “We are building the future of Johnston County and our workforce. Working cohesively has the potential to fulfill the needs of our county,” he said.

Brent Evans believes coaching and mentoring are important qualities for community college instructors. As a heating, air conditioning, and ventilation instructor at JCC, Evans says the students deserve his commitment.

“At the end of the day, I treat my students like customers, because they don’t have to be here,” he says. “Coaching and mentoring are big things with me. I like to talk to my students, get to know them, and understand their lives.”

Because of his passion and dedication to his students, Evans was chosen by his faculty peers as JCC’s 2019 recipient of the Earl and Dot Helms Excellence in Teaching Award.

It’s no surprise that the Princeton-native landed a career in the HVAC industry. As the son of

Mark Evans, co-founder of Evans Heating and Air Conditioning, he grew up working in the business.

“I started out in the duct shop at 13 where I made duct work systems and sheet metal fabrication for houses,” Evans explained.

Once he started studying heating and air at JCC, Evans became a preventive maintenance technician. In 2010, he advanced to a standard service technician and continued working fulltime while pursuing his associate’s degree.

In 2013, Evans started teaching part-time at JCC while he pursued his bachelor’s degree in pre-business administration from Mount Olive. In 2018, he earned his master’s degree in business administration.

̘̑̏̐΄¢¯ AA΄tA΄¯I*΄Ô* ̘̑̏̐΄ ¢¯ AA΄tA΄¯I*΄Ô* Director of student success and advising enjoys serving others.

Cari Drew, JCC’s Director of Student Success and Advising, is the recipient of the 2019 Rudolph Howell Staff Person of the Year.

Drew started at JCC in 2009 as an admissions counselor and became the Director of the Center for Academic Planning in 2013. She was named the Director of Student Success and Advising with the opening of the College’s new Student Success Center in 2019.

Drew was chosen by her colleagues for the award because of her hard work and dedication to the development and opening of the new center. She stepped into the leadership role and spearheaded countless meetings with staff and faculty to make sure the College was prepared for the opening. She has refined and developed processes, researched new and innovative methods to use in the center, and cross-trained with all departments that have functions in the center. ̐̏΄΄χ΄΄]tIk¢¯tk΄ tii¶kN¯Ô΄ taa*B*

An alum of JCC, Drew said the College holds a special place in her heart.

“I came here straight out of high school undecided about my future,” she said. “During my two years here, I really got to witness what JCC does for students. I was one of them. I knew back then that I wanted to work here. It had such an impact on my life and helped lay the groundwork for me.”

At JCC, Drew was an Associate in Arts student and served as a student ambassador.

She transferred to NC State University where she earned her bachelor’s degree in business management with a concentration in human resources in 2005. She earned her master’s degree in counseling from Campbell University in 2007.

¯I **΄] ΄¢¯¶$*k¯¢΄¢*a* ¯*$΄ ¢΄Btt$kNBI¯΄¢ Ita ¢ Each one will study mechanical engineering at NC State.

Three Johnston Community College students – Haley Evans of Selma, Joshua Murphy of Zebulon, and Josue Peralta Mejia of Clayton – will participate in the Goodnight Scholars Program’s Transfer Class of 2023 at North Carolina State University. Each one plans to study mechanical engineering.

In addition to the Goodnight scholarship, Evans was also awarded a $5,000 North Carolina GlaxoSmithKline Foundation STEM Scholarship.

She participated in the Community College Collaboration (C3) program with North Carolina State University while at JCC. A member of Phi Theta Kappa, Evans also served as lead mentor for the JoCo Robos FIRST Robotics team and as President of Girls Programming for Success (GPS).

Murphy, a three-time JCC graduate, completed his Associate in Engineering Degree Program in the spring of 2020. While at JCC, the Technical Drafting State Champion and Phi Theta Kappa member served as president of the Engineering Club. He also participated in the Honors Experience and was a head design mentor for the JoCo Robos FIRST Robotics team.

A Native of Morelia, Mexico, Mejia refers to JCC as his second home. He received an Associate’s Degree in Bioprocessing Technology prior to obtaining his Associates Degree in Engineering from JCC in spring 2020. He also earned a BioWorks Certification and the North Carolina State Bioprocess Certificate.

Mejia is currently working full-time as a project planning and management contractor with Merck Pharmaceuticals.

] ΄At¶k$ ¯Ntk΄k i*¢΄ k*Î΄¢¯¶$*k¯΄ i ¢¢ $t ¢΄ Cohort serves as leaders on campus and in the community.

Johnston Community College Foundation has announced the Student Ambassadors for the 2020-21 academic year: Hunter Bissette; Hunter Bouknight; Gabrielle Bryant; Savannah Dalton; Meredith D’Angelo; Andria Davis; Hannah Fisher; Harmandeep Gill; Alexis Jackson; Jacqueline Jimenez; Dorien Ruffin; Anita Scott; and, Amber Smith.

The Student Ambassador Program allows a cohort of students to serve as leaders on campus and in the community while attending the College.

Ambassadors act as liaisons between students, employees, and donors, while also assisting with annual Foundation events.

Accepted students bring a rich diversity to the program in terms of academic pursuit, personal experiences, and career goals. Upon completion, they are poised to take the skills they learn and develop at JCC to create a better future for our communities.

The Student Ambassador Program is funded by the Rudolph A. Howell and Son Scholarship Endowment, the Jean Lassiter Jones and John A. Jones, Jr. Ambassador Scholarship Endowment, and the Donnie E. and Linda V. Lassiter Ambassadors Scholarship Endowment.

The Goodnight Scholars Program targets North Carolina residents from low- and middle-income families who aspire to study in a science, technology, engineering, mathematics (STEM) discipline at NC State. The value of the scholarship is $20,000 and is renewable for up to four years for first-year students ($80,000 total), and three years for transfer students ($60,000 total). In addition to the scholarship, Goodnight Scholars have access to an assortment of developmental programming focused on their professional and personal growth.

Johnston Community College and the JCC Foundation hosted the 2nd Annual Linda Vann Lassiter Women’s Society Luncheon at The Farm on March 12, 2020.

During the luncheon, nine nominees for the 2020 Philanthropist of the Year were honored and the winner was announced.

Lynn Daniels of Smithfield was named the 2020 Philanthropist of the Year for her hands-on and heartful service to many non-profit organizations. She is active with the Junior Women’s League, Triangle East Chamber of Commerce, Johnston County Travel and Tourism Authority Board, Alpha International Ministries, the Business Women’s Network, and Johnston Health Foundation.

“She cares deeply for those in need and works tirelessly to help others,” commented Sol Haliburton, Johnston Health Foundation Director.

Nearly 200 individuals attended the annual event to celebrate the philanthropic spirit of the nominees while remembering the legacy of Linda Vann Lassiter. Nominees for this year’s award included Belle Allen of Clayton, Lisa Bland of Clayton, Michele Brownlee of Smithfield, Janet Daughtry of Selma, Cleo McKinnon of Benson, Dr. Dicky Parrish of Selma, Anne Peedin of Selma, and Addie Rawls of Clayton.

Johnston Community College Foundation celebrated the 25th Anniversary of the Annual Neal Lancaster – Community Bank Charity Classic on October 3-4, 2019 with a beautiful day and generous donors.

The always spirited event included a silent auction, a reverse raffle with the chance to win $5,000, and a steak dinner for two catered by Outback Steakhouse.

The combined efforts of our golfers turned out to be a hole in one for everyone – raising nearly $50,000 for student scholarships and faculty and staff professional development opportunities. The event also saw Wilson-native Paul Howell, a long-drive competitor, making a shot over 400 yards. Fore!

Since inception, the Neal Lancaster–United Community Bank Charity Classic has raised more than $1,000,000 towards its goal of $2,000,000 by 2022.

Johnston Community College Foundation hosted the first Alumni & Student Back-to-School Mixer on January 8, 2020, at the Smithfield Recreation and Aquatics Center.

Designed to reunite alumni and welcome current students, the event gave everyone the opportunity to enjoy food, music, and prizes before the JCC men’s basketball team tipped off against Cape Fear Community College.

The diverse group met virtually in August for their inaugural meeting.

President Johnson and Student Government Association President Heather Choate welcomed attendees and introduced student-athletes Thomas “Jackson” Glen and Erik Alvey as special guests to share their experiences at JCC. “I love all the benefits that come with representing JCC,” said Glen. “I’m extremely grateful for the scholarship I received through the Foundation’s Ambassadors Program that helped me get this opportunity to get an education and be involved with the college by playing basketball, and meeting leaders in the community. Words cannot express how thankful I am to be a student here.”

Indraj Rooprai was enthusiastic about the Mixer. “I graduated from JCC in 2013, so it was nice to have a chance to network with alumni. I was really glad to talk with Dr. Johnson and see JCC employees at the event,” he said.

The Alumni and Student Back-to-School Mixer will be hosted annually by the JCC Alumni Association to foster lasting relationships and to promote continuous involvement after graduation.

This year, Johnston Community College’s inaugural Alumni Association initiated efforts to establish the organization as a vital community resource and connection point. Following the excitement from the Alumni and Student Backto-School Mixer event held in January, the Association began the work of setting its vision and mission.

The diverse group of alumni—representing the Class of 1980 to the Class of 2020—met virtually for the first Association meeting in August.

President Johnson, along with Association Chair Woody Bailey, welcomed charter members before the group turned its attention to future initiatives geared towards enhancing the alumni experience.

“Alumni have always wanted a good reason to get together with old classmates, and keep in touch with instructors and staff that helped us at JCC,” said Bailey. “The Alumni Association gives everyone that attended JCC a great opportunity to network and be recognized for their accomplishments, while giving back to support the college we all love.”

Anyone who has completed at least one curriculum or continuing education course, attended professional development training through the College, or graduated with a diploma, certificate, or degree from JCC, is welcome to join the Alumni Association.

Members have access to opportunities for personal and professional growth, as well as special benefits such as discounts for the Barnes & Noble campus bookstore.

Alumni-couple Jason and Dana Barbour have established two new exciting funds for JCC. The Jason and Dana Barbour Fire Program Annual Scholarship will support JCC students enrolled in the fire program. The Tienta Transport, Inc. Truck Driver Training Annual Scholarship will help students enrolled in the NC Truck Driver Training School at JCC—the oldest program of its kind in the country.

Jason, a fourth-generation fire serviceman, is a graduate of the fire program at JCC. His 30-year career in public safety has allowed him to serve in numerous capacities including deputy sheriff, fire captain, president of the National Emergency Number Association, and in his current role as the director of Johnston County Emergency 911 Communications.

Dana, owner of Tienta Transport, Inc., started her journey as a student at JCC in the late 80s.

She went on to graduate from multiple programs, including emergency medical technician, paralegal technology, and therapeutic massage, in addition to the NC Truck Driver Training (TDT) School.

“I received a scholarship when I was a student at JCC, so it’s only right to give back,” Dana shared.

“I want to give someone else a chance to pursue their dreams like someone gave me.”

The Barbour’s interest in establishing the funds was sparked by Jason’s parents who met in college, married, and went on to have long careers in education.

“Education was very important to my parents, so we decided to honor them and give back to the community,” Jason explained. “The impact we’ll make by helping students get a college education is something that will outlive us.”

“Some students have to work long hours to take care of their family and pay for utilities, a car payment, and rent, so they can’t always afford to pay for college,” said Dana. “It’s tough for people trying to do better for themselves, so we want to do our part and make going to college easier.”

As a result of the safety precautions in place during the wake of COVID-19, JCC’s spring 2020 graduates could not participate in a traditional in-person ceremony. So, to formally recognize the commendable achievements, resilience, and perseverance of the Class of 2020, the College leadership, faculty, and staff created a new celebratory experience by holding multiple drive-thru events and a virtual ceremony live-streamed on Facebook.

Graduates and their families remained in their decorated vehicles for the drive-thru processions that took place on June 8-10. Faculty and staff social distanced along the sidewalk to cheer and congratulate each graduate as they passed. President David Johnson, accompanied by the JCC Board of Trustees, personally greeted families, presented souvenir gift bags, and posed for photos with each graduate to make the celebration even more memorable than they already were. The annual “send-off” turned out to be quite literal this year!

The virtual graduation, live-streamed on Facebook on June 11, featured congratulatory speeches by President Johnson; Heather Choate, President of the Student Government Association; Dr. Linda Smith, Vice President of Instruction; and Lyn Austin, Chair of JCC’s Board of Trustees.

Austin offered a closing message of inspiration to the Class of 2020. “There is nobody who knows what our world is going to look like, act like, or feel like on the other side of this pandemic,” she said. “But one thing we know for certain is that it will be our graduates who figure it out.”

With that goal in mind, the Office of Student Activities and the Athletics program offer exciting ways for students to get involved with clubs, organizations, and teams.

Under the direction of Student Government Association (SGA) President Heather Choate and the SGA Executive Board, JCC kicked off the last academic year by bringing students together for Fall Fest. The annual event gives students a break from class to enjoy horseback rides, games, and tasty treats including pizza, funnel cakes, and fresh popped kettle corn.

Prior to the cancelation of student events anticipated in the spring due to COVID-19, students participated in impactful workshops covering topics on leadership, diversity, and mental health awareness.

JCC’s sports programs also witnessed great moments before the pandemic cut some seasons short. Men’s golf head coach, Ed Ransopher, retired this year after 18 years of service with JCC. Prior to taking the helm of the golf team in 2008, Ransopher was the director of industrial training at JCC.

The men’s basketball team led a record-setting season under the direction of coach Hollis “Jay” Creecy. Players Erik Alvey, Michael Hill, and Caleel Mitchell all received post-season accolades.

Reaching success in the classroom as well as the court, Alvey maintained a 3.2 GPA and was named the National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) Region 10 Freshman of the Year.

In his first season as a Jaguar, Hill settled an average of 11.5 points and 9 rebounds per game. He was also selected to the NJCAA Region 10 All-Freshman Team. Hill accepted an offer to attend Epic Flight Academy in New Smyrna Beach, Florida where he will be enrolled in the aircraft mechanic program.

Mitchell was also selected to the NJCAA Region 10 All-Region Team for the second straight season for his stand-out performance on the court.

Senior Associate Justice Paul Newby shared some of his experiences as a member of the N.C. Supreme Court with paralegal, history, and criminal justice students at Johnston Community College during a visit to main campus.

Justice Newby’s visit coincides with the 200th anniversary of the N.C. Supreme Court. As part of its bicentennial celebration, the Supreme Court of North Carolina has held court sessions at various locations across the state throughout the year.

The JCC Admissions and Student Engagement department was awarded funds as a JCC Foundation Strategic Impact Award recipient.

The project, “Welcome to Jaguar Nation: A New Look for the Admissions Marketing Documents,” grew out of the idea that in order to meet the expectations of Generation Z and their parents, we needed a fresh take on the printed materials provided throughout the admissions cycle.

In collaboration, the Marketing and Admissions teams created welcoming and fun printed publications. Due to COVID-19, the publications had to be sent digitally for summer and fall 2020. However, Spring 2021 applicants have already begun to receive these exciting and creative pieces in their mailboxes.

Johnston Community College’s Student Support Services Program (TRIO) has been re-funded for the next five years through the United States Department of Education. The new grant runs from September 1, 2020 through August 31, 2025 with a total funding amount of $1.3 million.

Initially funded in 2001, TRIO currently serves roughly 160 JCC students. The program is designed to assist with academic goals, including graduating with a degree and transferring to a four-year college or university.

The program follows a strengths-based model and focuses on offering comprehensive services to support student achievements.

] ΄i*$N a΄tAAN *΄Nk¢¯ ¶ ¯t ΄ * *NÍ*¢΄¯* IktatBÔ΄B k¯ Tiffany Ruiz, a medical office administration instructor at Johnston Community College, received a classroom technology grant from Wake Electric Membership Corporation. The $1,065 grant supported the purchase of a smart, 180-degree plug-and-play Jabra PanaCast camera, which allows online students to virtually join seated classes at least once a week. Ruiz was one of nine educators in North Carolina and the only from a community college to receive funding for the 2019-20 academic year.

B*k*΄I ¢΄At¶k$ ¯Ntk΄ ¢¶ t ¯¢΄¢¯¶$*k¯΄¢ Ita ¢IN ΄ tB i Johnston Community College received the Gene Haas Foundation Grant of $15,000 to support scholarships for students studying machining at the College. Owner of Haas Automation Inc., Gene Haas founded the Gene Haas Foundation in 1999 in an effort to support the need for machining training across the nation.

The primary goal of the Gene Haas Foundation is to build skills in the machining industry by providing scholarships for CNC machine technology students and NIMS credentials.

WE ARE THE FOUNDATION Dear Alumni and Friends, What a year this has been! From the beginning of the 2019-2020 academic year, the Foundation was busy hosting key college and foundation events, further formalizing the JCC Foundation’s 2019-2025 Strategic Plan, and impacting lives daily through the breadth of programs managed by the Foundation.

Some of the key highlights of the 2019-2020 fiscal year include: Partnering with Dr. David Johnson, president of JCC, to partially fund a new cultural mastery program through the President’s Innovation Fund. Dr. Johnson along with Ricardo Gonzalez, author of the “Six Stages of Cultural Mastery,” hosted cohorts of faculty and staff to go through the cultural mastery program. The next step in the process was to integrate a component of the training into course offerings for students. Given the current state of our nation, the timing was certainly right to offer this level of education to our JCC community.

Advancement division prior to her arrival to Johnston County. She oversees annual giving, foundation specific communications, and has played a tremendous role in getting the JCC Alumni Association off the ground (see the story on pages 14-15).

Kiyona Jenkins serves as the Administrative Assistant to the Vice President of Advancement. Kiyona was most recently at iHeart Radio where she twice received recognition for Employee of the Year. Kiyona assists with the operations of the Foundation and Advancement Division.

Finally, we wrapped up our year by making the greatest impact in the history of the organization – even in the midst of a pandemic! As of June 30, 2020, the Foundation’s assets were $10,989.464 and the total revenue generated from July 1, 2019 – June 30, 2020 was $2,898,145. This is an incredible 39% growth in giving from the previous year!

More than $1,000,000 was put to work immediately to support programs like scholarships, instruction specific funds, professional development opportunities for faculty and staff, and direct institutional support.

On October 3 and 4, JCCF hosted the 25th Annual Neal Lancaster – United Community Bank Charity Golf Classic. To date, the tournament has generated well over $1 million in revenue. Net proceeds benefit programs like the Back to Class Alumni Scholarship, faculty and staff professional development, and the Strategic Impact Award. This year’s tournament will be hosted on Thursday evening and Friday, October 1 and 2.

The Johnston Community College Foundation awarded over $220,000 to more than 250 deserving individuals in the 2019-20 academic year.

Each November, the Foundation provides the scholarship recipients and their donors with an opportunity to share stories at the annual Donor Appreciation and Student Scholarship Recipient Luncheon. Students have the chance to discuss their future plans with donors as well as the time to talk about how the scholarship funds will help them reach their own goals and help them serve Johnston County for years to come.

JCC recently received a gift of nearly $420,000 from the Estate of Jean Lassiter Jones.

She bequeathed the gift to the JCC Foundation upon her death on February 29, 2016.

The gift was directed to the existing Jean Lassiter Jones and John A. Jones, Jr. Student Ambassadors Scholarship Endowment, established by Mrs. Jones in November 2013 and managed by the JCC Foundation.

A Johnston County native, Mrs. Jones graduated from Smithfield High School in 1951 and received a bachelor of science in Commerce from East Carolina University in 1955. She embarked on a teaching career until she retired from the field in 1964 in order to oversee the Double JCC Quarter Horse Ranch where she lovingly cared for over 100 horses.

Upon her husband’s death in 2005, Mrs. Jones served as the President and CEO of Carolina Packers, Inc. Mrs. Jones was known to quietly support many families in need and was particularly fond of assisting young people through her church and community.
