Letter from the Chancellor As I often do, I think back on our history when Miss Johnson and Miss Wales started this school right after the onset of World War I. We have survived wars, the Great Depression, recessions, hurricanes like Hugo that decimated coastal South Carolina in 1989, my first year at the JWU Charleston Campus, and now the global pandemic. Each time we came back, stronger than ever because of the flexibility, resourcefulness, determination, and grit of our students, faculty, staff, alumni, and our partners and friends throughout the world. We have accomplished so much, expanding our academic program offerings and experiential learning opportunities for students and creating a more interdisciplinary curriculum, especially with the addition of the College of Food Innovation & Technology.

Our strategic decision to consolidate our multi-campus footprint has positioned us well for what lies ahead. We will always be proud of the contributions and lasting legacies our campuses made in North Miami and Denver. As we reimagine our university system, we know the Charlotte Campus is integral to the success of Johnson & Wales University. Now, Johnson & Wales is looking to the future by embarking on a new 10-year vision with the first phase, titled POWERED BY PURPOSE 2024, guiding our work over the next three years. Long known as a world leader in culinary and hospitality education, we are evolving to become a comprehensive university that provides opportunities in a wide breadth of industry-relevant disciplines. Through PURPOSE 2024, we will continue that evolution and embrace our standing as a university that supports

every student’s journey to fulfilling their academic potential, professional ambitions, and personal aspirations. It is a pledge we make to each student, whether they are enrolled in Providence, Charlotte, or virtually through our newly repositioned College of Professional Studies. We deeply appreciate the philanthropy we have received from all who believe in our mission; this has allowed us to strengthen Johnson & Wales’ sound fiscal foundation. Our new plan builds on the culture of giving and engagement that became stronger during the months of COVID-19 as we sought new ways to connect and support the JWU community. The generosity of those who donated during the “oneJWU: 24 Hours of Giving” and to the JWU Emergency Fund enabled so many students to continue their academic pursuits. Your ongoing support will further our efforts to promote student learning and to expand and enhance Johnson & Wales’ academic reach and reputation through research and scholarship. I am excited for the future and what we will achieve as we bring our two campuses in Providence and Charlotte together to strengthen one university — Johnson & Wales.

Samantha Rosenthal, Ph.D. (College of Health & Wellness) is leading a team of JWU faculty that has received a threeyear NIH grant that will explore the impacts mobile screen time has on college students’ mental health. The grant will support the creation of a new undergraduate research center. This is the first NIH grant awarded to a JWU faculty member.

Through the PURPOSE 2024 strategic plan, Johnson & Wales University has committed to providing faculty with ongoing support and resources in their pursuit of research, scholarship and innovation. To support this commitment, the university has launched an effort to establish a new faculty development program through the Faculty Center for Academic Excellence and Innovation. The center will help train faculty to educate and serve a more diverse student body. This work is supported in part by a Presidential Planning Grant from the Davis Educational Fund.

Fostering a Culture of Giving

At Johnson & Wales, experience is the difference. And we’ve been perfecting the experiential education approach for more than 100 years. It’s woven into all aspects of our education, in and out of the classroom. Internships, student organizations, clubs and campus programming all contribute to an industry-focused education that prepares the leaders of tomorrow. You can direct your support to an area that is uniquely JWU and ensure all students have access to these opportunities.

• Funds awarded to two freshmen, two sophomores, two juniors, and three seniors studying culinary arts, business, health science, criminal justice, and marketing; from Providence, Charlotte and North Miami campuses

JWU Emergency Fund Like so many others, our students and their families are faced with financial uncertainty. During these extraordinary times, you can support urgent student needs through the JWU Emergency Fund. Your gift helps provide technology resources; assistance with unplanned travel, moving and housing expenses; and tuition relief that enables students to remain enrolled at JWU despite the challenges posed by the COVID-19 pandemic.

Awards, based on need, ranged from $1,000 to $4,000. The total amount of funds that the university awarded in 2020-2021 reached just over $160 million.

“Financial aid is extremely important to me. I am an older student at age 32 and never attended college until now. I wanted to make something of myself and be able to be proud when I tell people what I do for a living. You and JWU are helping me accomplish my goals and I am forever grateful for that!” – S A M A NT H A , B A K ING & P A S T R Y M A JO R

“[Donor] contributions have helped me get through school with vastly less financial stress and I am extremely grateful.”

Athletics Win at everything. That’s the motto of our studentathletes. JWU Athletics unites our campus communities and our varsity and club teams to compete with the same passion our students bring to their academic pursuits. On the field, the court, the mat and the pitch, student-athletes represent the four tenets of the Wildcat Way: Pride, Character, Courage and Community.

College & Academics Scholarships & Financial Aid Did you know that more than 90% of JWU students receive a scholarship or financial aid of some kind? Despite our tuition being more affordable than most similar institutions, many deserving Wildcats still struggle to fund their JWU education. Your gift can open doors and a whole new world of opportunities. Whether you establish an endowed scholarship fund or combine your gift with thousands of others to meet the growing need for financial aid, you have the power to change lives.

With six colleges preparing students for success in countless industries, Johnson & Wales’ renowned experiential education approach is applied across a variety of disciplines. When it comes to supporting Wildcats in the classroom and in labs, the choice is yours. Each college relies on the support of alumni, corporate sponsors and donors who believe in our mission and our students. Your gift will be used to support the specific needs of the college or program of your choice.

“Without financial aid, I would not be able to attend my dream school. Thank you to every donor! You helped me achieve my goals!” – KIA NA D A VIS ’2 3

From scholarships to athletics, student organizations or any of JWU’s six colleges, donations are put to work in dozens of areas. The choice is yours and gifts of any amount help us to reach our participation goals. When we all give what we can, the impact adds up. Johnson & Wales University’s annual day of giving took place on March 16, 2021. During oneJWU: 24 Hours of Giving, alumni joined with parents, faculty, staff and friends to support JWU’s current students in a variety of ways. Everyone was able to choose the area in which their donation supports. It’s all about participation and every gift counts. When our goal of 1,000 donors was met, we unlocked an additional $10,000 for students through the Chancellor’s Challenge.

“As a Johnson & Wales alum, I am so happy to lend a hand to a team that supported me for so long. Forever thankful to be a part of a legendary program, GO CATS!”

Events, led by guest chefs who are assisted by JWU students and faculty, include culinary demonstrations, receptions, seated dinners and cocktail gatherings. Your membership enables you to be part of unforgettable culinary experiences where you and your guest will learn about inventive cuisine and fine wine pairings. Additionally, your membership will provide scholarship support to JWU students. To date, members have collectively provided scholarships to 59 hard-working and dedicated students who will become future leaders in their industry.

Mary & Gertrude Society The Mary & Gertrude Society was established in the names of our founders, Gertrude I. Johnson and Mary T. More than a century later, we are proud to honor them by recognizing our loyal donors who have supported the university for three or more consecutive years. Each year, gifts to JWU help provide the stability and flexibility needed to give rise to a new era of innovation and ambitious advancements in academics.

Despite a turbulent 2021, Johnson & Wales University ended the fiscal year with a recordbreaking investment balance, and reduced debt by over $75 million. By June 30, 2021, the entirety of the Denver Campus and a portion of the North Miami Campus had been sold. These sales provided for the defeasance of $59 million in debt, with the remaining proceeds used to support operations. For the past few years, the Board of Trustees has appropriated additional funding to support operations. COVID-19 relief funding received through the Higher Education Emergency Relief Fund and the campus sales, eliminated the need for additional appropriations in FY2021. The increase in net assets of $16 million is due to stellar investment returns, which are offset by losses from continuing and discounting operations. Discontinued operations reflect the operating results of the closed campuses and losses on sale of the properties.

“The JWU plate glass windows facing West Trade Street in Charlotte, North Carolina reveal an incontestable fact: youthful baking and pastry arts students love what they’re learning. But the abundant smiles and optimism are but one reason I choose to give; all that Johnson & Wales does — for students, its community and professions — gives positive shape to lives. I know this first-hand: the support of Chef Peter Reinhart to the gluten-free community has shaped mine.”

The unique JWU Experience is what has guided our university for the past 100 years, and will continue to guide us as we move boldly into the future. Tuition alone does not fully cover all that JWU offers plus the general operating costs to run a comprehensive university. It is your support that makes the difference and will give rise to a new era of innovation and ambitious academic advancements.
