WHY JWU ONLINE

INVESTING IN THE FUTURE “My decision to return to school was driven by becoming a single mom and by my desire to make a good future for my son. Studying public administration at JWU is helping me gain the knowledge I need to move into future leadership roles. JWU’s online master’s program has been flexible enough for me as a parent to be able to give my son the time that he needs, while working and going to school. While I like learning in a classroom, for where I am in my life right now, it is so helpful to be able to learn online. I can work at my pace and still have that positive interaction with teachers and with classmates through the discussion boards.” Emmeline Orellana ’18, ’24 MPA Criminal Justice, Public Administration VOCA Community Safety Coordinator Section 8 Providence Housing Authority, Providence, Rhode Island

“Currently the chief of surgery at my hospital, and also providing daily patient care, the knowledge I gained in JWU’s MBA program is helping me perform better in this leadership role, as well as preparing me for my future. Should I no longer be able to perform surgery, the MBA will have prepared me to pivot my career path to other avenues — ones I would never have been able to pursue without going back to school and earning this degree.” Ajay Patel, M.D.,’26 MBA Finance General and Vascular Surgeon AdventHealth Carrollwood Tampa, Florida

FUTURE LEADERS

At JWU Online, we place a heavy emphasis on the value of experiential education. Our students are able to gain additional experience outside of the online classroom through internships, both in person and virtual. “I’ve always had a strong desire to advocate for kids and adolescents who either can’t or don’t have the resources and opportunity to advocate for themselves. Having anxiety and OCD myself is a strong motivator to work with children and families who are living with these conditions. I’m thrilled that my internship at Braver Medical has been such an incredibly rich and positive experience. Getting hands-on experience and seeing the work they do, has been a powerful motivator. Applying the academic knowledge learned during the psychology program has given me some really needed self-confidence. I appreciate the endless support and guidance from my JWU advising team. They encouraged me to go into my internship at Braver with an open and eager attitude — and the determination to merge academic knowledge with the practical experience I would gain. In the week prior to commencement, I accepted a position with NAFI Rhode Island as a behavior specialist and I love it!” Adriana Milko ’24 Psychology Intern, Braver Medical, Riverside, Rhode Island Behavior Specialist, NAFI Rhode Island, Warwick, Rhode Island

Internships On Site... “I had learned a lot about hotel operations and business applications, so I had a good academic understanding of how a hotel is run. But you need to be on site to see how everything works. An internship would give me the opportunity to apply my knowledge in a hands-on, practical way. I learned so much during my internship, and most importantly, I gained insight into the requirements for working at a hotel like the Four Seasons Nashville. Filling multiple roles during an internship confirmed that I enjoy, and want to work in, hospitality.” Chloe Perren ’25 Hospitality Management Intern, Four Seasons Nashville Australia Study Abroad participant

...or Virtually “Reading and interpreting insights about social media performance in school helped me evaluate the effectiveness of campaigns I created during my virtual internship. Studying marketing at JWU Online finally brought everything together for me with my internship.” If you question whether you should do an internship, 1,000% do it! Working hands-on related to the degree you’re earning helps confirm you’ve made the right choice. Because I had a positive internship experience, I recognize I’m on the right path.” Starlisha Keith ’26 Digital Marketing & Social Media Intern, Horizon Healthcare Partners, East Providence, Rhode Island

FUTURE LEADERS

Fostering Entrepreneurial Ambition Some of our students come to JWU Online with visions of launching their own business. We aim to help make their dreams a reality through mentorship via The Launch Pad, JWU’s entrepreneurial club, and Sharkfest, JWU’s annual contest that allows aspiring student entrepreneurs to pitch their business ideas to the campus community for the chance to win seed money. “Going back to school and acquiring new skills has helped at work and as an entrepreneur. My JWU education is helping me understand the market, where it’s headed, and what will shape the future. I want to make good use of the life I’ve been given — and to challenge myself to grow. I am proud of myself for making the pitch. I don’t know any other school that would promote students in pitching their entrepreneurial ideas.” Randy Benitez ’27 Entrepreneurship 3rd Place Winner, JWU Sharkfest 2025 ReWriter, an app that transcribes music as it is composed

Finding Confidence “I’ve always believed in my idea, but like many entrepreneurs, I’ve also struggled with moments of imposter syndrome after facing so many setbacks over the years. Working with Dr. Jeff Binczyk helped me find the confidence to fully stand behind my vision, and having people I’ve never even met see the value in it means the world to me. The grant funding is an incredible bonus, especially because I just landed a one-year contract as the sole bread maker for a local company, and a commercial stand mixer will not only help with that production but also support the pizza classes I teach.” Direka Gordon ’26 Food & Beverage Entrepreneurship Finalist, Online Division, JWU Sharkfest 2026 Hummingbird Roots & Recipes Academy

AN EDUCATION WITH REAL-WORLD APPLICATIONS “I discovered I could earn a Digital Marketing & Social Media degree through JWU Online. After reading all the great reviews and hearing positive feedback from people I trust about JWU Online, I decided, ‘This is where I’m supposed to be.’ From my first phone call to the school, I felt welcomed into the JWU Online community. The admissions representative listened to my goals and assured me I would like the program and the professors. In my program, students were given the option to either intern or take two elective classes during the summer sessions. When I learned about the internship opportunity, I thought, ‘Yeah, I would really love to do this.’ I served as a variable fixed operations intern for Faulkner Hyundai Harrisburg, rotating through different departments. I spent a month in sales, another month in finance, then service, and even sat for a while with the managers. While interning, I sometimes wondered if I was doing enough to provide value for the company. Looking back, I recognize that the internship was a fantastic opportunity for me to learn all sides of the business and see how the organization operates. As the summer semester was about to end, I let the company know I would be going back to school, but they said they weren’t ready to let me go. No one had touched their social media for a while, so they asked if I would re-build their social media from the ground up. I accepted their offer to work part-time as the company’s social media content creator. About a month after I graduated, I was hired as their full-time social media content creator. Understanding how the different departments function through my internship helps me tell the story of each group’s sales, service and financing operations. The promotion confirmed that by putting the skills learned in the Digital Marketing & Social Media program to work — first as an intern and then as an employee — I’m providing value to Faulkner Hyundai Harrisburg.” Ben Huntzinger ’25 Digital Marketing & Social Media Variable Fixed Operations Intern and Social Media Content Creator Faulkner Hyundai Harrisburg, Harrisburg, Pennsylvania

FUTURE LEADERS

PROGRAMS TO PIVOT TO A NEW CAREER “The Public Health bachelor’s degree program offers courses from a range of disciplines, including sociology, economics and psychology. I appreciated that the program would give me a solid grounding in research methodology and data analysis. JWU Online is super convenient for a working adult. As a single mom to four children, ranging in age from three to almost 18, time to do my assignments is at a premium. Learning online made it possible for me to care for my family and meet my work schedule, including overnights in the ICU at the Boston Children’s Hospital. Initially, I didn’t think an internship would benefit me, but the best way to get out of my medical assistant scrubs and know what it felt like to work in the public health field was to immerse myself in the day-to-day operations of an agency that would help prepare me for a future career as a health director. I chose an internship at the Rhode Island Office of Healthy Aging (OHA), which focuses on the health & well-being of older adults. Participating in the work and the meetings at the agency opened my eyes. The OHA offered me an in-depth look at how public programs are designed, implemented and evaluated. I learned how state and federal funding supports community-based services, gained experience interpreting grant applications and service contracts, and developed a deeper understanding of how government agencies ensure accountability and impact of the programs offered in the communities. Earning my Public Health degree at JWU Online expanded my ability to think beyond the individual patient and focus on the health of entire communities. It complements my clinical background and opens new doors into public health research, community health coordination and program development. The coursework deepened my understanding of population health, health equity and policymaking, while my internship at the OHA gave me real-world exposure to state-run health programs. I now feel equipped to take on roles that blend data analysis, outreach and advocacy to improve access and outcomes for vulnerable populations.” Reyna Salcedo ’26 Public Health Intern, Rhode Island Office of Healthy Aging (OHA), Cranston, Rhode Island

REAL-WORLD SUCCESS “After working at several different financial institutions, and feeling I had hit my ceiling, I started exploring different companies. I wanted to focus on what I really enjoy doing: helping people. I was surprised when I was offered a position in Human Resources — why did the company think I was a good fit? Recognizing I would be supporting company leaders, I initially experienced impostor syndrome! Before I was in the program, I felt like I was making decisions without understanding the legalities and standards. Now, things just click, and I can relate what I’m doing in my new role back to what I’ve learned in school. Now I truly understand why I’m a good fit for this position. JWU Online supports your journey towards educational growth by providing knowledgeable teachers who are experts in their respective fields. The professors will help you polish your experiences, skills and knowledge so you can achieve real-world success — and become the best version of YOU. Everyone at JWU cares about you!” asheeda Brooks Johnson ’24 M.S. R Human Resource Management Financial Investment Firm HR Director, Westlake, Texas

FUTURE LEADERS

WORTH THE INVESTMENT “When I decided I wanted to advance in my career from sous chef to kitchen manager, I realized how much a bachelor’s degree would help me. JWU’s Professor Samel was a great mentor, introducing me to the Club Management Association of America, which led to me getting hired as an executive chef. The student transfer advisors made it easy for me to transfer credits and saved me a lot of time and money. The confidence I gained during the program helped me balance a 60–80 hour work week while going to school. Finding out I could complete the degree online while living and working in Florida was a godsend. When it came to continuing my education with a graduate degree, I compared in-state tuition with JWU Online to other schools, and I found the 25% Alumni Scholarship discount made it significantly more affordable to continue at JWU Online. Given the quality of education I received in the bachelor’s program, I’m grateful to have returned to JWU Online to earn my MBA. It was definitely worth the investment.” Michael Yates ’23, ’26 MBA Culinary Arts and Food Service Management, Event Leadership Executive Chef, Okefenokee Country Club, Blackshear, Georgia
