Oxford

O2 Academy, 4/10/15 ADRENALIN! ADRENALIN! ADRENALIN! Adrenalin is precisely what was pumping as the Adrenalin Baby tour kicked off in Oxford, with a high-energy show that perfectly matched our excitement at embarking on another UK (and Ireland, this time) tour adventure. As Man Made fans already, it was an absolute joy to see them open for Johnny, digging live renditions of favourites ‘Carsick Cars’ and ‘All Mine’, as well as the brilliant new single ‘Bring Some’. Nile is an intense and captivating live performer (wonder where he gets that from?), and his talents are perfectly complimented by bandmates Scott and Callum, the three forming a tight and talented trio. Then along comes Johnny, looking seriously snazzy in a buttoned-up vintage-style Levis jacket (decked out in badges, natch), smiling and bouncing around onstage like the Energiser Bunny. His enthusiasm is infectious and has the crowd dancing (or at least bopping) around in response - not that anybody needed much motivation to get moving to those infectious melodies. The set list is peppered with a fantastic selection of solo tracks from both Playland and The Messenger, as well as Smiths classics - ‘You Just Haven’t Earned It Yet Baby’ makes its debut, to enormous excitement from the audience - and everybody’s favourite “Manchester disco song” from Electronic. Unreleased track ‘Spiral Cities’ is also met with an overwhelmingly positive response (hint hint, Johnny!), and a duet with Nile covering The Primitives’ classic ‘Crash’ rounds out a terrific set list. When we finally leave the venue in the wee hours, we’re both filled with an intense energy that keeps us going for almost three more solid weeks of travels and touring. That’s Adrenalin, Baby...

Birmingham 5th October 2015

After the excitement of the first night of the Adrenalin Baby tour in Oxford, it was a short trip onwards to Birmingham. It’s a rainy night in Birmingham but that doesn’t affect mood inside The Institute. It’s buzzing. Man Made dazzle (Again !!). Cue the drums for ‘Back In The Box’.... A few set list shuffles tonight. ‘Easy Money’ takes its rightful place early in the set. It’s a rowdy and hot affair tonight. The smiles grow wider as ‘Speak Out Reach Out’ gets an airing. Johnny and the crowd bouncing foot to foot, song to song, barely taking a breath. ‘Words Start Attack’, with its full on funk assault leads perfectly in to ‘Getting Away With It’. More sublime every show, the breakdown totally transcendent. ‘You Just Haven’t Earned It Yet Baby’ sparks another mass singalong and utter chaos amongst the front rows, while ‘How Soon Is Now?’ rings through the building, ending another memorable night in the presence of a true marvel.

Manchester The Albert Hall, 7-8/10/2015

It had been a long wait but by time Johnny and the boys took to the stage, I was ready and adrenalised. Watching Johnny play is always like watching him for the first time. The buzz is always fresh and you never quite know what’s gonna happen between songs. I always look forward to hearing what anecdotes, one liners or quips Johnny will come out with at the end of a number...

Manchester: you’re in ia territory now Marrf

This first night in the Albert Hall coincided with the Tory Party Conference a few doors up in the Midland Hotel and Johnny had a message for them, telling security to open the doors so that Cameron could hear what ‘Johnny Boy’ had to say. You could feel the unity in the room and everyone cheered as Johnny delivered his message to the Prime Minister. “That’s not how we do things up here Mr Cameron.” - brilliant! The surprises didn’t end there either. During the encore, Nile came on to play a cover of the Primitives’ 80s hit ‘Crash’, which was aptly dedicated to David Cameron. Watching father and son up there together was a special moment. Master and apprentice. Like he was showing him the ropes. Not that Nile needs any training - he has proved that he can hold his own with his own band Man Made, who were the support band for the tour. Good to see Nile has inherited his father’s guitar genius and penchant for silver nail varnish! This night was, (for a whole host of reasons, including meeting the Dynamic Duo, Aly and Ory, in the flesh) the best Johnny gig to date, despite going alone and getting half crushed when a few inebriated ‘fans’ surged towards the stage (one of the Marr-mates pulled me to safety). I waited around after the gig with a few others in hope of meeting my idol, but it wasn’t to be. Maybe next time...which hopefully won’t be too far away. Until then, there’s always Adrenalin Baby.

Getting ready!

PM Hearing Johnny’s mid-gig speech against Tory David Cameron, in defence of special needs students ol, being denied essential public transport to get to scho dn’t was both a chilling and moving moment. I coul y have imagined Johnny Marr sounding that angr ous about anything until that night, and so it’s obvi g how strongly he feels about this cause. As the siblin (and occasional carer) of a beautiful young man with aut ism, it was very touching to hear somebody I already admired so much speak up about an issue so close to my heart. T hank you Johnny for your support, and for being a wonderful human being.

“Guy Garvey once said of Manchester, ‘They return the love around here, don’t they?’. I think the same can be said for Johnny Marr and his audiences.”

“I had been waiting outside for Johnny and had to go, so a kind man gave me this! I’m 13 and struggling with many things, so I guess it keeps me going! Being from Manchester and an aspiring guitarist I felt proud to be Mancunian and proud to be a Johnny fan.” - Katherine Lambley

This was my favourite Johnny Marr concert I’ve attended so far and well worth the six hour train ride! It was amazing to introduce my boyfriend to my main musical obsession, and what better way to do it than up close and personal! The crowd was mesmerised by Johnny as always, with the most amazing atmosphere as everyone joined together to sing along. It was truly an intense, high energy set! The highlight of the night was walking out with my boyfriend now a full fledged Johnny Marr Fan! I was also lucky enough to walk away with the set list at the end of the night! I like to think karma played a little role in helping me get it, as I gave away a Plectrum that I caught in the audience to another avid Johnny Marr Fan that I had talked to throughout the night. I thought I’d share the Marr love (meaning I already caught one at a previous gig) and my good deed was rewarded less than five minutes later when I was handed Johnny’s set list!

Newcastle Newcastle University Students’ Union 11 October 2015

I’ve been lucky enough to go and see Johnny and his band every time they’ve played in Newcastle during his solo career, and somehow they just keep getting better and better. Playing at the University’s Student Union proved to make a very interesting night, including a comment or two about the kilts that were causing ‘panic on the streets of Newcastle’- blame that rugby, Johnny! Man Made were the perfect opening band, and the crowd were already pretty rowdy before Johnny had even set a foot on stage. Every single song that Johnny belted out had the Geordies going wild from start to f  inish; and I’m pretty sure I ended up in a headlock multiple times through the night! Being surrounded by Johnny Marr fans from all over the place and getting to hear your favourite songs in your hometown is an incredible feeling that is very hard to describe. This year, I attended Johnny’s gig with my good friend Niamh, who travelled all the way from Lincolnshire in order to make it for the gig - which made the night even more special! The morning after all the constant pushing and a sleepless night was a real struggle for us both - but we wouldn’t have it any other way. The cover of ‘Crash’ that featured Johnny’s son, Nile, was my personal highlight, as well as ‘New Town Velocity’ (def  initely my all-time favourite song) and the familiar setlist of both old and new songs had the Student Union roaring all night. Johnny’s band smashed it yet again in heart of Newcastle, and we can’t wait to have them back for another fantastic gig - roll on next year!

IRONWORKS, 13-10-15

Exactly 30 years ago is when I’d last seen Johnny Marr in Inverness, on the Scottish leg of The Smiths’ Meat Is Murder tour, and this reunion of sorts was everything I’d hoped for and more. Johnny has proved himself to be an extremely capable frontman, and the Smiths songs peppered amongst his excellent solo material sound just as fresh now as they did when I was a teenager in 1985. It was an emotional night for this sentimental old bloke (me, that is, not Johnny!), but also a celebration of Johnny’s career, and my years of being a Johnny Marr fan. There certainly is a light that never goes out - and its name is Johnny Marr.

Edinburgh

The Liquid Room, 14/10/15

My heart was racing under my new Fred Perry Harrington jacket as I watched Johnny and the boys rocking out onstage in Edinburgh. I bought it with this particular gig in mind, saving up 5 or 10 quid at a time, in a wooden box alongside my gig ticket. I figured the big man himself would probably outdo me in a sartorial sense (and he did, damn it - rocking a Levi’s jacket and floral shirt beneath), but at least I’d be nice and warm as I froze half to death in the queue before doors. To tell the truth, Johnny has rekindled my interest in fashion. After a few good years of umming and ahhing, I’ve decided to take the plunge and pursue my dream of studying fashion design. His own stylishness aside, it was Johnny’s spirit and positivity that pushed me in the right direction. Maybe it’s his faith in us youngsters, or just his altruistic attitude. It was a phenomenal gig that led straight into a white night of sketching ideas for my future collection. I felt utterly inspired. Thank you, Johnny!

Johnny & Thomas

Johnny & Monica

Together with my wife Monica and teenage boys Michelangelo and Thomas, we got to our third Johnny show as a family. We arrived extra early at Johnny’s Edinburgh gig. As we waited outside we could hear the sound check; from a small side door we could make out Johnny and the band belting out ‘The Headmaster Ritual’ loud and clear. That was a great start to the evening, but after a short while Johnny exited by the same side door and approached us. Although he said he had a bit of a sore throat, he was still lovely and chatted away to us. Johnny also was very kind to sign my old copy of the ‘Strangeways’ CD cover. It was a fantastic gig as per usual and we managed to be in the front row again. Happy days!

- Mark Mulholland

“I didn’t get to meet Johnny, but desp ite already being on the bus, chilling after the gig, he still took the time to sign my ticke t for my son - added plectrum bonus. This was an amazing gig and venue. I was right at the very front to the side of the stage so I had room to jump about like a nutter. Roll on next tour #johnnyfuckinmarr !!”

‘At the Edinburgh show I reached across the barrier and handed Johnny my Rory Gallagher - Irish Tour 74 vinyl. He asked if it was for him, and I nodded back and shook his hand from the crowd. My dad had shown me Gallagher when I was 10, and f inding out Johnny was a fan too contributed to my connection with his music. I didn’t get a chance to meet Johnny that night, but I drove over to Kilmarnock the following day, grabbed a last minute ticket, and after enjoying a second show in a row was lucky enough to see him. He recognised me straight away, thanked me sincerely for the present, and chatted with me for a good 5 minutes - decent guy who I hope to see again.’

Belfast limelight,16/10/15 Flying over to Belfast in order to watch Johnny Marr confirmed to friends and family that I’m totally in awe of the Godlike Genius, and that my husband is probably the most patient man in the world. Would it be worth the journey, the time off work and a fitting way to celebrate my wedding anniversary: oh yes indeed. It was the sixth time I’d seen Johnny in the space of twelve months and as an experience it has to be the best yet. Not only did I get down the front to have a fantastic view of Johnny, I blagged a set list, met the endearing and incredibly talented members of Man Made and shared the crazy shenanigans with the irrepressible Adrian Harrold (who I met for the first time in the bar before the gig) and he’s become a friend for life. The icing on my Belfast cake though was meeting Johnny himself – he was so charming and engaging and every bit as lovely as other fans who’ve met him have described. I’m rarely lost for words, but I can hardly find the right ones to cover how brilliant Belfast was: a highlight of my life.

And so here we were, the wonderful Moores and me, outside the Limelight, Belfast post gig with beams on our faces when my Sergeant-at-arms Sinéad Harrold appeared in the doorway saying “Someone wants to speak to you.” We all went back inside to be introduced to the young, talented and annoyingly handsome band Man Made. “That’s him! That’s the guy!” exclaimed Callum and then all became clear. During the gig, Callum had shown some beautiful chord playing on his bass which, as a fellow purveyor of the four string art form, impressed me no end. I let him know this by attracting his attention and giving an exuberant thumbs up. This was remembered and, when he recognised Sinéad, kindly wanted to thank me!

Adrian, A lis prized set on & list

During my chat with Callum, Sinéad was discussing the pros and cons of Scott’s facial hair as he was unsure as to whether the ‘tache look was better than a full beard that he had previously sported. Life is tough at the top. Further discussion included nail varnish choices, Johnny Flipping Marr t shirts for small children and my unfortunate Roadie like appearance in any photos taken stood next to a young rock band. Good times, keep it up lads.

Dublin

The Olympia Theatre, 18/10/15

Having been in desperate need of a JM fix since I’d last seen him at Leopardstown Races well over a year ago, I was beyond excited to see my favourite Mancunian-Irishman return to Dublin at long last. Rightly so, it was very much a celebratory affair, with an adoring crowd and even some of Johnny’s relatives in attendance. After a brilliant set by Man Made (fronted by Johnny’s son Nile, who has clearly inherited his father’s awe-inspiring talent as a guitarist and songwriter), Athy’s beloved prodigal son bounded out onstage, looking sleek and stylish in his indigo denim jacket and jetblack hair impeccably styled. I swear if I look even a fraction as good as Johnny does when I’m in my early 50s... Solo songs and Smiths classics alike elicit hearty applause from the audience, and I’m pleased that ‘25 Hours’, my personal favourite from Playland, makes it into the setlist, as does a fantastic cover of The Primitives’ ‘Crash’, for which Nile joins his dad onstage. Perhaps the biggest highlight of all though is a sublimely gorgeous new song called ‘Spiral Cities’, which I really hope will soon be recorded and released. It’s only natural that the audience would be having the time of their lives, but Johnny was clearly enjoying himself too, regularly flashing a dazzling smile at the crowd, and scattering his set with playful quips of everything from ‘Do not be afraid!’, when introducing ‘Spiral Cities’, to ‘I just had a donut!’. Seeing an artist so clearly loving what they do, and the people they’re doing it for, just makes a gig even better, and it’s safe to say that Johnny Marr at the Olympia was my best gig yet.

London O2 Forum Kentish Town, 20 October 2015

It’s not panic on the streets of London tonight, but celebratory joy, as packs of young and old(er) fans, clad in obligatory Johnny Fuckin Marr t-shirts, huddle outside the O2 Forum in Kentish Town. Some are tightly clutching to their beloved collection of Johnny Marr LPs while other enthuse over previous nights’ setlists and claiming stakes on personal favourites. It warms my heart to see how much love there is for Johnny as a legendary musician and as a person. This tour comes in support of the release of the aptly named live album Adrenalin Baby, a potent bomb containing magnificent tracks off The Messenger and Playland, and fused with all-time singalong classics from The Smiths and Electronic. At last the doors open and the crowd trickles inside with excitement. After a fantastic opening by the innovative and dexterous Man Made, the show starts and it’s immediately a treat of a night. Bad arse basslines by the ever majestic Iwan Gronow, flawlessly compliment Johnny’s roaring Jag. On drums, the energetic Jack Mitchell making me contemplate getting my own kit, and in the same breath give up on the idea (two left hands, I’m afraid!). To Johnny’s right, the mysterious Doviak, who I swear actually smiled (or at least smirked) at my awestruck expression. The crowd is loving every minute, and from my spot at the barrier, between ducking from mad crowd surfers, I can see broad smiles. Something special is happening here. We’re in for a double treat tonight in the form of Johnny and his son Nile, covering the boppy ‘Crash’ by the Primitives and of course, Barry Cadogan of Little Barry and Primal Scream for the ultimate climax of ‘How Soon Is Now’. Panic, they said? More like the best night of my life. - Hermione Terry

“There’s a religious quality to the experience of a Johnny Marr gig that really drives home the realisation of how important music, and live music especially, is on a spiritual level. When you’re in the audience singing along to ‘There Is A Light That Never Goes Out’, arms stretching towards the stage, and smiling for what sometimes seems like the first time in weeks, it really can feel like you’re being healed by some divine force. And if that makes Johnny Marr some kind of saviour, well, that doesn’t seem so far-fetched to me.”

Northampton Roadmender, 21/10/15

The Roadmender probably seemed a bit of a weird venue to play on a tour that had also taken in Manchester’s Albert Hall, Dublin’s Olympia Theatre and London’s O2 Forum just the night before, but it’s testament to Johnny’s versatility and here-for-the-love-ofmusic attitude that he chose my beloved local to visit on the Adrenalin Baby tour. It was an insanely good gig, with highlight s including a cover of The Primitives’ “Crash” (two Marrs for the price of one!) and a heartfelt singalong to “There is a light...”. I didn’t get to meet Johny himself afterward s, but I did get a free badge (cheers Aly & Ory), and have some amazing memories ... thanks JM. - Stuart King

Bristol

O2 Academy, 22/10/15

Tonight in Bristol feels victorious. Although it’s the final show of the Adrenalin Baby tour, energy levels are high and attitudes positive. Birthday wishes are in order for Johnny’s manager Dave (complete with three cakes and a stomping rendition of ‘Happy Birthday’ after the soundcheck), then it’s on with the show for a triumphant closing night. It’s also our final night getting to see Man Made perform, which has been nothing short of a pleasure over these past few weeks. When you follow a tour from start to finish, there’s no sweeter icing on the cake than an amazing support band, and Nile, Scott and Callum have delivered a top-notch set every night. Then it’s Johnny’s turn, and despite several weeks on the road and all the late nights and exhaustion that entails, you’d never guess it from his energetic onstage demeanour - he’s jumping around and striking poses with every bit of the enthusiasm he’s shown since the first night of the tour in Oxford, and as for us, we’re just as spellbound by the songs as we were the first time we ever heard them. For some reason, you can never ever tire of hearing Johnny play. The night closes with a profoundly touching dedication of ‘There Is A Light That Never Goes Out’ to Johnny’s manager, friend and mentor Joe Moss, which we both must confess brought a tear or two to our eyes. A fitting tribute to an amazing man, and a beautiful finale to the incredible Adrenalin Baby tour. Until next time, Johnny...
