HIS NAME SHALL BE CALLED

SCRIPTURE: MATTHEW 1:21-25 CONCEPT: THE NAME OF JESUS IS CALLED FOR SALVATION, HELP AND AUTHORITY THE BIRTH OF JESUS AND THE COMING OF CHRIST WAS HARD FOR THOSE WHO WERE IN CHARGE. KING HEROD, WANTED TO KILL HIM AS A BABY, BECAUSE HE WAS FEARFUL THAT HE WHO WAS CALLED BY THE WISE MEN, THE KING OF THE JEWS, WOULD TAKE HIS KINGSHIP AWAY. THE PHARISEES – THE RELIGIOUS EXPERTS IN THE OLD TESTAMENT, THE JEWISH BIBLE AND THE SADDUCCEES – THOSE WEALTHY JEWS WHO RAN THE TEMPLE, HAD A PROBLEM WITH JESUS BECAUSE HE WOULD HAVE A KNOWLEDGE OF THE BIBLE AND A BIBLICAL UNDERSTANDING THAT THEY WOULD NEVER HAVE. HE WOULD EXERCISE AN AUTHORITY IN THE WORD AND IN WISDOM THAT WOULD GREATER THAN THEIRS. THEY WOULD BE THREATENED HOW JESUS COULD DRAW SUCH LARGE CROWDS OF PEOPLE AND BE ABLE TO HOLD THEM FOR HOURS, JUST BY TEACHING AND PREACHING THE WORD OF GOD. THEY WOULD GROW TO HATE HIM BECAUSE HE WOULD MAKE FUN OF THEM AND THEIR RELIGIOUS TRADITIONS. THEY WOULD ALSO BE FEARFUL OF HIM BECAUSE THEY WOULD BELIEVE THAT JESUS WAS GOING TO CREATE A NEW FANGLED RELIGION AND MAKE WHAT THEY Written By Rev. Johnny R Calhoun Christmas Day 2015

WERE TEACHING AND LAW THAT THEY HAD MASTERED OBSOLETE. THEY WOULD ACCUSE HIM AS BEING ONE, WHO CAME TO DESTROY THE LAW. MAKING THE OLD TESTAMENT, THEIR LAW, THE JEWISH BIBLE IRRELEVANT. BUT JESUS WOULD MAKE IT PLAIN, HE CAME NOT TO DESTROY THE LAW, BUT TO FULFILL IT. HE WHO WAS WHO THE LAW SAID WOULD COME HAS COME. JESUS IS THE FULFILLMENT OF THE PROMISES OF GOD. GOD PROMISED THAT HE WOULD SEND A SAVIOUR, A STRONG DELIVERER, THE MESSIAH, THE SON OF DAVID. NO, JESUS DIDN’T COME TO KILL OR DESTROY THE LAW. HE CAME TO FULFILL WHAT WAS WRITTEN AND SPOKEN BY THE PROPHETS.. AS A MATTER OF FACT, THE WORD FULFILL IS ONE OF THE MOST USED WORDS AND THEMES IN THE BOOK OF MATTHEW. ITS USED 16 TIMES. TO REINFORCE THAT JESUS DIDN’T COME TO MAKE THE LAW OR OLD TESTAMENT NULL AND VOID. NO, JESUS CAME AS A FULFILLMENT OF WHAT WAS PROPHESIED ABOUT HIM IN THE OLD TESTAMENT. IN THE BEGINNING THERE WAS THE WORD AND THE WORD WAS WITH GOD AND THE WORD WAS GOD. AND THAT WORD BECAME FLESH AND DWELLED AMONGST MEN. JESUS IS THE FULFILLMENT OF THE WORD. JESUS CHRIST IS LORD!

MESSIAH. IT’S LIKE SAYING OBAMA PRESIDENT OR CALHOUN PASTOR. CHRIST IS JESUS’ TITLE. IT MEANS THE ANOINTED ONE. JESUS WAS ANOINTED BY THE HOLY SPIRIT. WHEN HE WAS BAPTISTED THE HOLY SPIRIT FELL UPON HIM LIKE A DOVE AND GOD SPOKE FROM HEAVEN AND SAID, THIS IS BELOVED SON. IN HIM I AM WELL PLEASED. AND JESUS EVEN SAID HIMSELF IN, LUKE 4: The Spirit of the Lord is upon me, because he hath anointed me to preach the gospel to the poor; he hath sent me to heal the brokenhearted, to preach deliverance to the captives, and recovering of sight to the blind, to set at liberty them that are bruised, 18

To preach the acceptable year of the Lord.

GOD PROMISED IN THE OLD TESTAMENT THAT HE WOULD SEND THE CHRIST, THE MESSIAH, THE ANOINTED ONE. OVER 500 REFERENCES OF THE CHRIST ARE MADE IN THE OLD TESTAMENT. AND WHEN, HOW AND WHERE CHRIST WOULD BE BORN.

GOD CAN DO SO MANY THINGS. BUT IN SPITE OF POPULAR BELIEF, THERE ARE SOME THINGS THAT GOD CAN NOT DO. AS A MATTER OF FACT THERE ARE AT LEAST 101 THINGS THAT GOD CAN NOT DO. ONE OF THEM IS, GOD CAN NOT LIE. NO HE CAN’T. HE IS THE WAY, THE TRUTH AND THE LIFE. IN HIM IS NO SIN AT ALL. GOD IS NOT A MAN THAT HE SHOULD LIE. I TOLD YOU THAT GOD CAN’T LIE. TESTAMENT BOOK OF ISAIAH 9.6, HUNDREDS OF YEARS BEFORE THE COMING OF CHRIST, THE BIBLE SAYS, UNTO US A CHILD IS BORN, UNTO US A SON IS GIVEN AND THE GOVERNMENT SHALL BE UPON HIS SHOULDERS. AND HIS NAME SHALL BE CALLED WONDERFUL, COUNSELOR, ALMIGHTY GOD, EVERLASTING FATHER, PRINCE OF PEACE. HERE THEY ARE REFERRING TO THE CHRIST, THE MESSIAH, GOD’S ANOINTED ONE WHO WOULD BE BORN AND GIVEN. JESUS IS THE FULFILLMENT OF THIS PROMISE. HE IS THE CHRIST.

AND SHE SHALL BRING FORTH A SON, AND THOU SHALT CALL HIS NAME JESUS AND HE SHALL SAVE HIS PEOPLE FROM THERE SINS. GOD MADE IT CLEAR THAT HE, THE SON OF GOD, THE HUMAN MANIFESTATION ON THE EARTH, COULD NOT BE CALLED JUST ANYTHING. HE COULDN’T LEAVE THE NAMING OF HIS SON UP TO CHANCE. BEING A GIVEN A NAME JUST BECAUSE IT SOUNDED NICE OR TO SEEM RIGHT. NO JESUS WAS SENT, AS THE ANOINTED ONE WITH A PURPOSE. HE CAME TO SAVE. HIS NAME, JESUS MEANS GOD SAVES, OR GOD IS SALVATION. HE HAD TO HAVE A NAME THAT SAID WHAT GOD WAS GOING TO DO. AND SO AS HE ANNOUNCED HIS COMING TO HIS MOTHER AND TO THE MAN WHO WOULD BE CALLED HIS EARTHLY FATHER AND THE ONE WHO WOULD HAVE THE RESPONSIBILITY OF GIVING HIM A NAME. SALVATION. HIS NAME SHALL BE CALLED GOD SAVES. HIS NAME SHALL BE CALLED JESUS. THE NAME OF JESUS WAS GIVEN TO JOSEPH AND TO MARY, SO THAT IT WOULD BE CLEAR THAT GOD ALWAYS KEEPS HIS WORD. THAT HE HAS SENT THE ANOINTED ONE, JUST LIKE HE SAID HE WOULD DO. AND HIS NAME, SHALL BE CALLED, JESUS. GOD SAVES

JESUS, O’ BELOVED THERE IS SOMETHING ABOUT THAT NAME. THE NAME OF JESUS IS above every name that is named, not only in this

age but also in the one to come. THERE IS SOMETHING MIGHTY WONDERFUL ABOUT THAT NAME: THE BIBLE SAYS, That at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, of things in heaven, and things in earth, and things under the earth;

To him all the prophets bear witness that everyone who believes in him receives forgiveness of sins through his name.

IT SAYS

If you ask me anything in my name, I will do it.

THOSE who believe in the name of the Son of God SHALL have eternal life.

IT SAYS, Whoever believes in him is not condemned, but whoever does not believe is condemned already, because he has not believed in the name of the only Son of God. But the Helper, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in my name, he will teach you all things and bring to your remembrance all that I have said to you.

I DON’T KNOW ABOUT YOU BUT, I HEAR A WHOLE LOT OF NAME CALLING. PEOPLE CALLING PEOPLE NAMES. CALLING FOLK OUT OF THEIR NAME. NAMING THIS AND NAMING THAT. AND THAT’S ALRIGHT. NAMING AND BLAMING THE DEVIL FOR DOING WHAT THE DEVIL DOES. THE DEVIL THIS AND THE DEVIL THAT. BUT LET ME TELL YOU SOMETHING, I NEED A NAME THAT IS STRONGER THAN THE DEVIL’S NAME. I NEED A NAME THAT IS BIGGER THAN MY PROBLEMS AND THE TROUBLE IN MY LIFE. I DON’T KNOW ABOUT YOU, BUT I NEED A NAME THAT IS GREATER THAN MY NEEDS AND MIGHTIER THAN MY SHORTCOMINGS. I NEED A NAME THAT IS MORE POWERFUL THAN MY PAIN AND STRONGER SUFFERING.

WE NEED A NAME, THAT’S ABOVE EVERY NAME, A NAME THAT CAN HEAL THE WOUNDED SPIRIT. WE NEED A NAME THAT CAN CALM THE RAGING SEA. WE NEED A NAME THAT CAN MAKE THE FOULEST CLEAN, A NAME THAT CAN SET THE CAPTIVES FREE.

AND SHE SHALL BRING FORTH A SON AND THOU SHALT CALL HIS NAME. CALL HIM. CALL HIM. I’VE DISCOVERED YOU CAN CALL HIM IN THE MORNING, YOU CAN CALL HIM LATE AT NIGHT, JESUS. I SAID JESUS.
