125th Anniversary Please join us for the 125th Anniversary of the NC Theta Chapter during alumni weekend, April 2527, 2008.

On Friday evening, April 25, we will sponsor a cocktail social at the North Harbor Club starting at 7:30 pm. The Club is located at 100-D North Harbor Place in Davidson, at exit 30 (Davidson Landing) and Interstate 77. Light food and a cash bar will be provided. Spouses and dates are welcome, and attire is casual.

On Saturday afternoon, April 26, there will be our traditional Barbeque and Spring Frolics at the house from 1:00 from until 5:00 pm.

As part of our effort to fund these events as well as in our ongoing roll of supporting the Chapter, the NC Theta Alumni Association is seeking financial support. As always, members who donate $100 or more will have their name engraved on the commemorative plaque in our Chapter Room.

The chapter was founded on May 20, 1883 by a member of the SC Delta Chapter at USC. We were the 38th installation of SAE. More history of the chapter is online at www.nctheta.org.

Chapter Education Fund The Chapter Education Fund, which was started in 2001, is maintained at the SAE FOUNDATION to support brothers that want to attend the National SAE Leadership School. The tuition is $475 per person, and places a hardship on the chapter and members to attend. The interest from this fund is still not enough to cover the cost of one delegate.

The balance in the account is approaching about $6,000. We named the fund in honor of the current faculty advisor Dr. Mary Vasquez, a Spanish Professor at Davidson.

Tim Hose, ‘76 Timothy H Hose, Class of 1976, is president of First LandMark USA in Charlotte. Founded in 1971, First LandMark in conjunction with subsidiaries SYNCO, Inc. and Guardian Management, Inc. develops, acquires, manages, leases, maintains, and selectively sells investment real estate.

William W. Wilkins, ‘64 The Honorable William W. Wilkins, ‘64, is Chief Judge of the United States Court of Appeals for the Fourth Circuit in Greenville, SC. Billy, a native of Greenville, is a graduate of Davidson College and the University of South Carolina School of Law. He was editor-in-chief of the South Carolina Law Review, captain of the South Carolina National Moot Court Team, and a member of the Order of Wig and Robe. During his senior year in law school, he was selected as the Outstanding Graduate of the Year.

Billy was elected Solicitor for the Thirteenth Judicial Circuit in 1974, and was later appointed United States District Judge for the District of South Carolina by President Reagan. In 1981 In October 1985, President Reagan appointed Billy the first Chair of the United States Sentencing Commission, a position he held until October 1994. In addition to his duties on the Sentencing Commission, he continued to serve as a federal judge, and in June 1986, he was appointed United States Circuit Judge for the Fourth Circuit Court of Appeals. In 1999, Chief Justice William Rehnquist appointed Billy Chair of the Committee on Criminal Law for the federal judiciary. In 2003, he was elevated to the position of Chief Judge of the Fourth Circuit Court of Appeals. Billy assumed senior status on July 1, 2007.

Judkins M. Bryan, ’78, joined Wilkerson & Bryan, P. C. of Montgomery, Alabama in January 2000, and practices in the area of general business, secured transactions, and real estate.

He is an experienced title lawyer and an agent with First American Title Insurance Co. and Lawyers Title Ins. Company. Jud graduated cum laude from Davidson, then attended law school at the University of Alabama, where he was active in Phi Delta Phi, Moot Court Board, and the Jasons. MEMORIAM

Edward S Goode, ‘82 Edward S Goode ’82 of Charlotte, died April 19, 2007, after a long battle with cancer. He was born March 29, 1960, in Charlotte, N.C. where he lived most of his life. Ed was married to Elizabeth “Beth” Whitener.

Ed loved North Carolina and the natural beauty of his home state. Going to lacrosse games, basketball games, anything to be with his family was Ed’s greatest joy.

Roy Campbell, ’72, is an attorney with the firm of Bradley Arant Rose & White, LLP in Jackson, Mississippi.

He is a member of the firm's Litigation Practice Group where he handles products liability, insurance, professional liability, and commercial claims in state and federal courts.

He is listed in The Best Lawyers of America and Chambers USA: America's Leading Lawyers for Business. Married to Nancy, Roy was an Eminent Archon of the chapter. He obtained his JD degree from the University of Mississippi School of Law in 1975. Roy was the recipient of the Hinds County Bar's Outstanding Service Award in 2004 and the Mississippi Bar's Distinguished Service Award in 2005.

Charles P Wright, Jr., ‘57 Charles “Chuck” Wright, Class of 1957 and the Souder Family Professor of English at the University of Virginia, was awarded the 2007 International Griffin Poetry Prize for his book Scar Tissue (FSG, 2006) in June 2007. The Griffin Poetry Prize is the world’s richest poetry prize awarded for a single volume of poetry. Wright will split the $100,000 prize with Don McKay, a Canadian poet who won for his book “Strike/Slip.”

Chuck is one of the country's most highly honored poets. He is among 177 leaders in their fields recently elected as fellows of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences. The recognition is for pre-eminent contributions to science, scholarship, public affairs or the arts. Chuck, whose poetry collection includes, "A Short History of the Shadow," has taught in the UVA Creative Writing Program since 1983.

He won the Pulitzer Prize in Poetry in 1998 for his collection "Black Zodiac," which also won the National Book Critic's Circle Prize. He has also won a National Book Award in poetry, the prestigious Ruth Lilly Poetry Prize honoring lifetime achievement, and the Lenore Marshall Poetry Prize, among many prizes. He was elected to the American Academy of Arts and Letters, one of the highest honors for a creative artist, in 1995. Some of his other books include: "Chickamauga," and "The World of the Ten Thousand Things: Poems 1980-1990."

He started writing poetry in 1959, when he was in the U.S. Army. “I started reading it, and it was monkey see, monkey do. I found it was something I could do and got pulled in.” Along the way he has written 23 books of poetry, translation and “improvisations and interviews.

In Memory of W Olin Nisbet, III, Class of 1963 Former President Bobby Vagt’ 69 poses with Marian Nisbet, the late Olin Nisbet ‘63, and Chip Nisbet ‘86. Olin was presented with an award recognizing his years of service to Davidson College.

This was taken at the 2006 Tom Scott Golf Tournament.

Walter Olin Nisbet, III, 67, of Charlotte died at home on June 25, 2007 from complications related to a long-standing battle with Alzheimer's disease. A native of Charlotte, Olin was born on March 18, 1940 to Rebecca Jones Nisbet and Walter Olin Nisbet, Jr. He attended Charlotte city schools and graduated from Episcopal High School in Alexandria, VA in 1959.

Olin founded Sterling Capital Management in 1973 and was its president, chairman and director until his 2000 retirement. "He taught me a lot of lessons," said son Olin "Chip" Nisbet IV, ‘86 (SAE). "I always looked up to him in business; he set great examples, had a great work ethic and approached everything.” The Nisbet Fitness Center on the Davidson campus is named for Maran and Olin. He also served on the Board of Trustees of Davidson College.

Walker Taylor III, ‘48 Walker is Chairman of Walker Taylor Agency in Wilmington, NC. Walker has been in the agency business since 1955. He spends the majority of his time handling large commercial insurance and risk management functions for accounts in the Southeast. His expertise is in public company Directors and Officers Liability and related management liability exposures.

He also focuses on corporate risk management for large non-profit and forprofit firms. He received his most recent Professional Designation in 1992, CIC.

Bo Brickels, '64 Ohio Tau (Miami U) was athletic director and basketball coach at Davidson from 1974-1976.

He attended Miami University following graduation from McGuffey High School in Oxford, Ohio He currently resides in Davidson with his wife Lynn.

Dr. C Gersham Bayne ‘68 Dr. C Gresham Bayne ’68 has been Chief of the Department of Emergency Medicine at the Naval Regional Medical Center in San Diego, Associate Professor of Medicine at the University of California, San Diego Medical School, and Associate Director of Life Flight at UCSD Medical Center. He is a Fellow of the American Academy of Emergency Physicians and is a Director and Treasurer for the American Academy of Home Care Physicians. Although Dr. Bayne was honored as "House call Dr. of the Year" by the American Academy of Home Care Physicians (AAHCP), he considers his highest honor as being voted "The doctor who cares the most about his patients" during his internship in 1973.

George Thomas, ‘73 George N Thomas, Class of 1973, is a Principal Architect in the firm of Melville Thomas Architects in Baltimore, MD. His company is located in the historic planned community of Roland Park. George joined the company in 1997 after 13 years with Ayers Saint Gross Architects where he managed and coordinated design efforts for various universities and public entities including Baltimore City, The Virginia Bureau of Capital Outlay Mgmt, and the University of Maryland Systems. Since joining the company, George has worked in the private sector on renovation design, masterplanning, and facility management consulting. Whitney H Montgomery, ‘85 On March 14, 2007, the North Carolina Outward Bound School selected Whitney H. Montgomery, founder and former CEO & President of Just Fresh Bakery Café and Market, as Executive Director of the nonprofit experiential education organization in Asheville. Whitney’s professional background is a mix of for-profit and non-profit experience. As founder and CEO of Just Fresh Bakery Café, he directed the organization from inception to a multimillion dollar business managing over 16 company owned and franchised locations.

Since selling Just Fresh in the summer of 2006, Whitney worked at Alford Lake Camp in Hope, ME where he facilitated ropes course initiatives focused on teambuilding for girls eight- to 16years-old. Prior to founding Just Fresh, he worked as Development Officer at Carolinas Healthcare Foundation in Charlotte, NC, and early in his career he worked as headmaster and teacher at a school in Kenya.

Carter R. Todd, ‘79, joined Gaylord Entertainment in Nashville, Tennessee as Senior Vice President and General Counsel. A Tennessee native, Carter graduated from Vanderbilt Law School in 1982where he served on the editorial board of the Vanderbilt Law Review. At Davidson, he was a member of the varsity basketball team and was selected to the Honors College. Gaylord, a leading hospitality and entertainment company based in Nashville, Tenn., owns and operates Gaylord Hotels, its network of upscale, meetings-focused resorts and the Grand Ole Opry. Ivan D Rohrer, ‘64 Ivon D Rohrer Jr., Class of 1964, is the founder and president of Development Management Inc in Charlotte, NC. DMI has developed over 40 centers comprising almost 5 million square feet throughout North Carolina, South Carolina, Virginia and West Virginia. Prior to founding DMI in 1976, Ivon worked for 7 years as Vice President of Real Estate and Expansion for Eckerd Drugs.

Ivon received his Bachelor of Arts degree from Davidson College and served as a Forward Air Control Pilot with the United States Army during the Vietnam War. He has served on the Board of Directors for numerous organizations including the Southern Appalachian Highland Conservancy and the Boy Scouts of America for the CharlotteMecklenburg area, and early in his career he worked as headmaster and teacher at a school in Kenya. Thomas Meares Young, ‘78 Thom joined Optcapital in Charlotte in June 2006 as an Advisor, and in October, 2006 as a Managing Principal responsible for sales and marketing management. Prior to joining the Company, he co-founded and managed Cambium Capital Management, a hedge fund that applied a conservative Jones model consisting of US equity long/short positions. Cambium was launched as a low volatility fund targeting large institutional investors. It attracted an experienced staff, built a scalable infrastructure and developed proprietary risk analytics.

Assets peaked at $175 million. Thom closed Cambium on April 28th, 2006, and repatriated his deferred fees. Before Cambium, Thom worked as a Managing Director of Deutsche Bank in New York and Atlanta. He is also founder and President of the DAM Club, a social club for male Davidson College alumni. Thom earned his MBA from the University of Virginia.

Scott D. Sheftall, ‘73 Scott D Sheftall, Class of 1973, is the President of Sheftall & Torres, P.A., a law firm in Miami which he founded in 1996 after a twenty-year career in civil trial and appellate practice at the Miami law firm formerly known as Frates Floyd Pearson Stewart Richman & Greer.

Scott was born and raised in Jacksonville, Florida, and was educated at Davidson College (B.A. 1973) in North Carolina. In 1972, the Davidson faculty selected him as one of three students from his junior class to pursue special studies in government in Washington, D.C. His devotion to Davidson has been evident from his ten years of service as President of the Alumni Association (South Florida Chapter), chairman of the Davidson Alumni Admissions Program in South Florida, and as the recipient of the Alumni Leadership Award in 1997.
