John Muir Land Trust is now raising funds to construct low-impact features that will open 232acre Pacheco Marsh for public access. You’ve heard about this project for years, and we’re finally close to being able to show it to you firsthand. This extraordinary place will become a popular destination where young people will learn about the salt marsh ecosystem that is vital to marine PACHECO MARSH species, and where everyone can enjoy a fun day exploring a thriving natural habitat along the JOHN MUIR LAND TRUST shore of Suisun Bay. Scarred from decades of industrial activity, the property was acquired in 2003. JMLT and partners Contra Costa County Flood Control District and East Bay Regional Park District have finalized plans for extensive habitat restoration and for welcoming visitors to the site. JMLT

We’re all doing our best to cope with the COVID-19 pandemic, wildfires, and unsettled times. Outdoors is where we find relief from the stresses of everyday life—important in the best of times, and never more important than now. The JMLT mission reminds us to take the long view. Together we are protecting special places forever. Our work benefits people today, but more importantly, generations to come. The land will always be there for us, in the best of times and in the worst. Finding time for long walks or just gazing at the scenic hills nearby offers moments of calm, wellbeing, and quiet reflection. Our mission is to make that possible today, and for future generations and the world they will inherit from us. We’re as busy as ever. This newsletter lifts the curtain on two efforts that have been in the works for years. Pacheco Marsh is emblematic of the heroic story of shoreline conservation along the Bay. After nearly twenty years of hard work we are in sight of opening this property to the public. Family Harvest Farm is a truly remarkable venture. This urban farm employs transition age youth with experience in the foster care system, and will soon be providing healthy food to those who live nearby. Inaugural Almond Ranch Hike John Muir Land Trust hosted residents of the Stonehurst neighborhood for an inaugural hike of Almond Ranch on a bright and sunny day last year. Families within the neighborhood contributed $250,000 to the Campaign to Save Almond Ranch.

FAMILY HARVEST FARM Family Harvest Farm is a new program of John Muir Land Trust that employs transition age youth (ages 18-24) who have experience in the foster care system. Through on-the-job training in organic farming, this life-changing venture in downtown Pittsburg, CA provides a healthy, nurturing environment for program participants, and delivers affordable, quality food to the community. Transition age foster youth in Contra Costa County need work experience that provides access to full-time employment, continuing education, life skills development, health care, FAMILY HARVEST FARM quality food, and housing. The opportunity to build community connections helps to support JOHN MUIR LAND TRUST and enrich their lives. Without safety nets and support, emancipated youth are vulnerable to homelessness, unemployment, under-education, health problems, and poverty. Family Harvest Farm is an innovative solution to these issues. JMLT
Work on the farm is structured with a strong family dynamic—clearly defined roles and routines, mutual support, nurturing mentorship, opportunities to teach and learn from each other, and the satisfaction of contributing to the achievement of larger group goals. CAMPAIGN FOR PACHECO MARSH Continued from page 1
Restoring Pacheco Marsh, where Walnut Creek flows into Suisun Bay, is part of the greater effort to recover the extensive salt marsh ecosystem that is vital for a healthy San Francisco Bay. Completing our $1 million campaign will allow JMLT to construct amenities for the public to responsibly explore and discover this unique site.
Vital Ecosystem Generations ago the Bay and Delta supported abundant upstream freshwater marshes and downstream salt marshes and mudflats. These served as vital pathways for migrating birds and fish species that spawn in inland streams and live adult lives in the ocean. Salt marshes provide essential food, nutrients, refuge, and nursery habitat. Destructive human activity has resulted in the loss of more than 80% of historic tidal wetlands in the San Francisco Bay. Over the decades, Pacheco Marsh has been diked, drained, and partially filled with dredge spoils. A sanitary sewer outfall has been built down the middle of the property. Scarred by industrial activity, Pacheco Marsh is a microcosm of the larger story. Biologists are now recreating habitat for threatened bird species, marine invertebrates, and coastal fish. Pacheco Marsh is home to ten special-status plant and animal species, including the salt-marsh harvest mouse and the California black rail—on the list of avid bird-watchers. When the site opens, visitors will see abundant wildlife thriving side-by-side next to human communities. The site will be a birders’ paradise. New educational features will teach young people how a marsh ecosystem functions and why it is so important to a healthy Bay. The marsh will show how human activity can harm the natural environment, but also teach how responsible care and attention can catalyze nature’s remarkable ability to recover.
Natural Solutions For Community Needs Salt marshes protect shorelines from erosion by buffering wave action and trapping sediments. Marshes protect water quality by filtering runoff and metabolizing excess nutrients. Marshes protect community infrastructure during periods of intense flooding. Thoughtful design strengthens ecological resilience by allowing the marsh to adapt over time to climate change and sea level rise. When protected and restored, saltwater marshes sequester and store large quantities of carbon and are an essential part of the solution to global climate change.
Recreation When low-impact features are in place, bird watchers and outdoor enthusiasts will view wildlife responsibly in restored habitat. Those seeking healthy recreation will explore carefully constructed trails that offer up-close views of each sub-ecosystem while protecting the marsh’s full-time residents. Young minds will experience nature firsthand. All will be enthralled by the stunning contrasts—thriving habitat surrounded by an industrial backdrop. The towers of oil refineries can be seen in the distance while tankers pass underneath the parallel spans of the Benicia-Martinez Bridge to the north. DONOR SPOTLIGHT Eliot and Martha Hudson
A message from Eliot and Martha Hudson. Eliot is Chair of the JMLT Board of Directors. We will never forget the day we took Linus Eukel, JMLT’s Executive Director, on his first visit to the top of Acalanes Ridge. He took in the expansive 360 degree view and after a few moments said resolutely, “This has to be saved.” The Campaign To Save Acalanes Ridge opened a whole new world for us. This beautiful landscape near our home in Lafayette is a popular hiking area and important wildlife corridor that connects to Briones Regional Park. Years ago we were stunned to learn that its most prominent peak had recently been sold for luxury residential development. We became involved in a grassroots effort to protect that property. Hundreds of our neighbors began collecting signatures, organizing broad support, and appearing at public hearings. Good intentions will go so far. Not until we were introduced to John Muir Land Trust did we find the partner with the necessary expertise to actually pull it off. Organizing, funding, and negotiating the purchase took tremendous effort, which the Land Trust was able to accomplish only because of its unique reputation and recognized integrity. That was when we first learned about land trusts and what they do. Now we smile when we see scores of people walking the property every single day. We watch hawks hunt along the slopes, soar in its updrafts and rest in its trees. We listen to owls at night. We trace deer tracks through its grasses. We have fox and quail in our neighborhood because of the open spaces where they can roam. Martha once watched a mountain lion move quietly out of sight. And we take deep satisfaction in knowing that Acalanes Ridge is a legacy of beauty that will endure long after we have seen our last sunset. The two of us are blessed to have been shaped by childhood experiences in nature. Long walks with beloved pets. Playing along the banks of the creek in the backyard. Roaming the hillsides of an apple ranch owned by grandparents in Mendocino County. Riding horses in the Oakland hills. Family trips to the Sierra Nevada. When we were offered the opportunity to join JMLT in its future efforts, we were absolutely delighted to say “Yes!” When JMLT acquires a property, it is opened for everyone; all it takes to revel in the beauty and wonder is getting onto the land, taking a deep breath, and feeling the clean air. Private donations are absolutely indispensable to JMLT’s ability to carry out its work. While public agencies may help fund property acquisitions, they do not contribute to JMLT’s operating expenses and stewardship activities. JMLT’s mission is to save land in perpetuity, and, as we are fond of saying, “perpetuity is a long time.” We believe the investment of time and money we make into JMLT has priceless value. A wise person once said, “We do not inherit the earth. We borrow it from our children.” In this work, we turn fragments of earth over to the children of our communities, carefully, lovingly, protected for generations to come. We are proud to support JMLT’s indispensable work by donating to JMLT’s annual funding and to each campaign that protects another special place.

FARMING PRACTICES THAT REDUCE CARBON EMISSIONS AND INCREASE BIODIVERSITY The holistic land-management approach at Family Harvest Farm reduces carbon emissions, increases biodiversity, and improves soil quality while building water resilience and nutrient density. ORGANIC systems of production avoid using genetically modified seed, synthetic pesticides, or fertilizers. NO-TILL farming minimizes soil disturbance on the site, which keeps organic material in the soil while enriching biodiversity and reducing the need for chemical fertilizers that emit greenhouse gases. REGENERATIVE AGRICULTURE reduces emissions, increases soil organic matter, and sequesters carbon. According to the Rodale Institute, worldwide adoption of regenerative agricultural practices, such as those used at Family Harvest Farm, could sequester global greenhouse gas emissions by roughly 52 gigatons of carbon dioxide per year. HEALTH AND WELLBEING is achieved by delivering high quality organic vegetables for sale at farmers markets, and to restaurants and institutional buyers such as hospitals and school cafeterias. Affordable Community Supported Agriculture (CSA) subscriptions and donations will provide food to those who cannot afford it. If you’ve read this far, chances are that you are among those who feel a deep appreciation for the restorative power of time spent outdoors. Nature works wonders on mind, body, and spirit. Whether exploring a trail in the remote backwoods or just getting your hands dirty on a sunny day in the garden, there’s nothing quite like physical activity outside as an antidote to the stresses of everyday life. Work on the farm is a key aspect of the program. Studies have shown that gardening and horticultural work: • Decrease anxiety

• Improve self-control
• Improve one’s sense of well-being and personal worth
• Increase self-esteem
• Improve patterns of social functioning
Family Harvest Farm contributes to the equity and wellbeing of local neighborhoods. Apprentices work side-by-side with community volunteers—propagating seeds, planting and harvesting crops, preparing and delivering food, and assisting in other farm duties. With the training and the stability gained in the program, graduates can confidently pursue further education or permanent employment. Most importantly, they map a path forward as adults with new skills for life and career.

Phillips 66 is going big on renewables in California. In August 2020, the company unveiled its plan to convert the San Francisco Refinery’s Rodeo facility into the world’s largest renewable fuels plant in support of growing demand for these high-value products and California’s environmental goals. Dubbed “Rodeo Renewed,” the project will reconfigure Rodeo to produce 800 million gallons per year of renewable diesel, renewable gasoline and sustainable jet fuel from used cooking oils, fats, greases, and oils resulting in 50% less carbon dioxide and 75% less sulfur dioxide when used, and fewer local emissions from operations than the current crude oil refinery. The initiative furthers the company’s dedication and commitment to providing high-wage, green jobs while working toward a renewable energy future. Governor Newsom Affirms Critical Role of Land Conservation In Fight Against Climate Change The Governor’s Executive Order N-82-20 issued in October sets a first-in-the-nation goal of conserving 30 percent of California’s land and water by 2030 to fight species loss and ecosystem destruction, and importantly, it directs state agencies to store carbon in the state’s conserved lands. The land trust community across the state enthusiastically embraces this call to action, and is proud of the recognition it gives to our work over the last several decades. Today, JMLT is actively engaged in three of the four key strategies outlined: • Family Harvest Farm aims directly for “healthy soils management, including planting cover crops, hedgerows and compost applications” • There is perhaps no better example of “wetlands restoration to protect coastal areas” than Pacheco Marsh, featured in this issue’s cover story • All of our work together, such as the recent acquisitions of Painted Rock and Almond Ranch are “boosting green infrastructure in urban areas” You—the donors, volunteers, and supporters—who make this work possible are the key to achieving these ambitious goals.
