JCCA Thrift Store Spring Cleaning over the Holidays? We want your unwanted clothes!

In preparation for the JCCA Thrift Store in Week 7 The Roots and Shoots Club with The Sustainable Textile Club are collecting clothing and accessories (like shoes and hats). We also collect fabric (including sheets and doona covers) for upcycling projects.

Bringing in your unwanted textiles is an excellent way to de-clutter and update your wardrobe with no cost to the animals, people or the environment. Proceeds from the Thrift Store are donated to the @indigenousliteracyfoundation so it’s a win-win situation!

So, if you are thinking of spring cleaning or just decluttering your wardrobe over the holidays please bring in your clothing and accessories to help our campaign.

This year Student councilors donned yellow R U OK? Shirts and vests, handed out wristbands, stickers and conversation starters. All other students were invited to wear yellow accessories to encourage meaningful conversations. Year 7 and 9 Enrichment classes utilised the official R U OK? Day resources and activities and we enjoyed a lunch time concert as a community.

Students and staff completed the ‘Be You Young People Survey’ to find out how our community feel about our College approach to mental health and wellbeing, what we are doing well and what we can do better. We would like to thank staff and students for their commitment to ensuring our College remains a safe and healthy environment for all.

The Voice - Caitlyn Bamber - Year 11 Music Theatre Our Year 11 Music Theatre student, Caitlyn, blew us away on The Voice Australia! Her performance of Guy Sebastian’s “Before I Go” earned her three chair turns from coaches Jason Derulo, Jessica Mauboy and the man himself, Guy Sebastian.

We were so proud to see her perform her heart out on such a big stage. Her voice is incredible, and we can’t wait to see what she does next.

After hundreds of high school aged acts entered into the annual Unearthed High competition, Daisy Park have been selected as one of 5 outstanding acts to be included in the yearbook.

Music Camp “JCCA Music Camp: A Success Thanks to the Hard Work of Staff, Volunteers, and Parents ” Over 270 students from Year 7-12 had the opportunity to attend the JCCA Music Camp 2023 last week. The camp focused on refining students’ ensemble skills in preparation for the Music Festivals occurring in Term 3.

Students participated in large ensemble rehearsals, instrumental sectionals, and workshops with their ensemble directors, instrumental teachers, local professional musicians, and visitors from UWA, WAAPA, and WAM. In addition, students were involved in team building activities and other featured activities of the campsite to allow them to further develop their friendships and bonds with their peers outside of a school setting.

The camp was a huge success, and we couldn’t have done it without the support of our staff, JCCA community and over 70 parent volunteers. From carpooling students to helping with student welfare, we thank you deeply for your assistance in making this the largest music camp in WA. The Music Camp 2023 was a unique opportunity for students to improve their musical skills, learn from experienced musicians, and build lasting friendships. Thank you to our students for their participation and support.

Leek, who is currently playing for the Fremantle City Football Club, says that the coaches at John Curtin helped her develop both on and off the field.

‘Being exposed to a group of amazing coaches every day for five years, each with a wide breadth of knowledge, was a privilege,’ Leek said.

‘Not only would we train, but we would also learn the ins and outs of the game in a classroom setting.’

Cape to Cape Year 11 Outdoor Ed Camp Our Year 11 Outdoor Education students recently returned from an epic 3-day bushwalking expedition along the Cape to Cape Track in Margaret River.

Students put their skills to the test in camp craft, navigation, safety and rescue. And had an absolute blast!

They hiked through stunning coastal scenery, pitched their tents under the stars, and cooked their own meals over campfires. This expedition was an amazing experience for all involved. Students Get a Taste of Real-Life Filmmaking at Annual Camp Each year, the combined classes of Year 10 GAT Media, Year 11 ATAR MPA, and Year 11 Certificate II In Creative Industries (Media) come to camp to make films together. The camp operates as an intensive film production, mirroring real-life film production sets with industry professional experts as mentors and guides.

This event is regarded as compulsory for Media students as it gives the most hands-on, immersive, and accurate experience of what it is like to be a filmmaker.

Students have the opportunity to learn all aspects of filmmaking, from writing and directing to cinematography and editing. They also have the chance to work with professional equipment and software.

This year’s camp was a huge success, with students producing a variety of creative and engaging films.

The annual film production camp is a valuable experience for Media students. It gives them the chance to learn from industry professionals, work with professional equipment and software, and produce their own creative films.

Congratulations to the 2023 Emerge Youth Art Award Winners, Aisling and Dale!

Aisling, a JCCA alumni, took home the Resident’s Award First Prize for her painting “Stillborn.” Dale, a current Year 12 student, won the Under 18 Award for her painting “Tea for One.” Over 140 young artists aged 12-25 exhibited as part of this year’s show, with a total of 175 artworks on display. The talent and creativity of these young artists is truly inspiring. They are the future of the Australian art scene, and we can’t wait to see what they achieve next.

The finalists’ works showcase a wide range of artistic styles and techniques, from Olina Murphy’s delicate and atmospheric painting to the vibrant and playful work of Trent Curedale and Vivi Dorlen.

The Young Originals exhibition will be held at the Art Gallery of Western Australia from 11 November to 4 December 2023. The finalists’ works will be on display alongside works by other young artists from across Western Australia.

Sustainable Urban Design Showcase Year 10 students who have participated in the urban design program in 2023 showcased their work in the Curtin Theatre. Students examined aspects of urbanization in the Perth context and have explored the ‘Future of Fremantle’ harbor redevelopment project. Students worked collaboratively to create designs that target one or more aspects of sustainable urban design. Their final work reflects their vision for the future of Fremantle.

Roots and Shoots presented the Annual Casual Dress Day on Friday the 18th of August for National Science Week.

For a gold coin donation students dressed up in this Year’s theme “Innovative recycled fashion for the Year 2100” or casual dress.

From steampunk to recycled fashion from op shops, this year’s theme was an opportunity to get creative.

Students and staff also enjoyed the annual Science Documentary and Breakfast, the perfect way to start a day!

Stump The Scientist During Science Week Year 7 AEP Science students participated in the ‘Stump the Scientist’ Event presented by the Pawsey Supercomputing Research Centre. The event saw schools Australia wide join an interactive online session with four extraordinary scientists who shared their fascinating work and fun facts about their disciplines.

The highlight of the event came when students were given the opportunity to ask the scientists the hardest, most tough-provoking questions they could think of – the aim being to ‘Stump the Scientist’ with the toughest, stumpiest question.

Year 7 Music Theatre student Sydney successfully stumped an astrophysicist with the unanswerable question “how many stars are in the sky?”.

Year 11 Cybersecurity Students Participate in CyberTaipan During Science Week, Year 11 Cybersecurity students at John Curtin College of the Atrts participated in CyberTaipan, a simulated cybersecurity environment that requires them to ensure a computer is secured from any cyber threat. CyberTaipan is an Australian Youth Cyber Defence Competition for teams of high school aged students. As a part of the cyber security course, students are required to participate in this event to demonstrate competency in the unit BSBOPS - Work Effectively in a Business Environment.

During this simulated workplace experience, students gain points for finding and fixing cyber security vulnerabilities, strengthening systems, and maintaining critical services. The students worked together to identify and mitigate a variety of cyber threats, including malware, phishing attacks, and network intrusions. They also learned how to harden systems and implement security best practices.

The CyberTaipan competition is a valuable learning experience for students interested in pursuing a career in cybersecurity. It allows them to apply the skills they have learned in the classroom to a real-world scenario. It also helps them to develop teamwork and problem-solving skills.

Fashion Week JCCA Students Strut Their Stuff on the Catwalk for Fashion Week 2023!

JCCA Fashion Week 2023 was a resounding success, with students strutting their stuff on the catwalk in a truly collaborative event. The week kicked off with student-led workshops in felting, fashion illustration, crocheting, knitting, needle punching, hair, and makeup. Students had the opportunity to learn new skills and express their creativity in a supportive environment.

The week culminated in the second annual JCCA Fashion Show, which showcased the Fashion Design projects (Years 9 and 10) and Textiles garments (Years 8, 10, 11, and 12). The Year 10 Fashion Design students also designed the props for the show, which were constructed by the Certificate II Production students and Year 9 Wood Work students.

In addition to the student-designed pieces, there was also an open category for the fashion show, where students could flaunt their handmade garments, upcycled garments, or thrift shop finds. The prizes for best dressed went to students who demonstrated the most creativity, originality, and style.

The JCCA Fashion Show was a truly collaborative event, showcasing the talent and creativity of students from across the school. It was a celebration of fashion and self-expression, and a testament to the power of collaboration and community.
