INTERNAL MEDICINE RESIDENCY PROGRAM FACULTY

LEADERSHIP Dana Sall, MD, MEd Program Director Dr. Sall is from Syracuse, New York and completed her undergraduate education at the University of Rochester, and her medical training at SUNY Upstate Medical University. She completed her Internal Medicine Residency at the University of Cincinnati (UC). During her Chief Resident year, Dr. Sall confirmed her passion for education and realized that connecting with learners was her calling. She pursued a master’s degree in education at UC to help develop the skills to become an outstanding educator. After completing her Master of Education, she simultaneously took a role as an Associate Program Director for the Internal Medicine Residency program at UC and a role as co-course director for a core longitudinal Clinical Skills course for MS1 and MS2 students. She won one Gold Apple and two Silver Apple awards for her teaching during this time. She has been widely published and presented nationally and internationally on topics such as assessment and feedback, rater cognition, Clinical Competency Committees, adult learning theory, procedural competence, and change management. As Program Director, Dr. Sall is enthusiastic about incorporating adult learning theory into the curriculum, being open to feedback to guide continuous program improvement, and helping residents succeed by cultivating a growth mindset – where challenge is embraced, and failures are not missteps but opportunities to learn together.

Ijeoma Uche, MD, PharmD

Associate Program Director, Internal Medicine Residency Program Medical Director, Academic Internal Medicine Clinic Dr. Uche brings to HonorHealth a foundational background in medicine, pharmacy and research. She began her career as a hospital pharmacist for several years before training as a physician researcher. Her approach to medicine is multi-dimensional yet patient centered. Driven by the pursuit of knowledge and personal development, Dr. Uche states “the use of scientific tools to solve complex medical problems fuels my passion for medicine as an educator and as a life-long learner.” In her capacity as the Associate Program Director for the HonorHealth Internal Medicine Program, Dr. Uche is inspired to bring her unique backgrounds to academic medicine to develop innovative curricula for graduate medical education. Her clinical interests include transitions of care in the post-hospital phase, social determinants of health, chronic disease management and improving health literacy among underserved populations. Aside from medicine, she enjoys playing lawn tennis and soccer.


CORE FACULTY Connie Abarikwu, MD Ambulatory You would think that after 20 years of practicing Internal Medicine, there would not be much about the human body to still amaze Dr. Abarikwu. Not so! She continues to be “in awe of the body and its resilience” and has great respect for the process of aging and our elderly population. She also has a special interest in female care and gynecological issues. As you would expect, Dr. Abarikwu finds Internal Medicine “challenging, yet rewarding and fulfilling.” Viewing it and other primary care specialties as “the foundation for all medical care,” she is proud to be part of the “foundation team” and honored to help prepare the next generation of internist physicians.

Misty Evans, MD Inpatient Dr. Evans began her career in Healthcare as a Registered Dietitian after attending Texas A&M University for undergraduate work. After five years, she returned to school at Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center Medical School and then completed residency at Mayo Medical Center Arizona in Internal Medicine. She returned to Texas Tech as core faculty and Internal Medicine Clerkship Director at the Amarillo, TX campus. In 2004, she joined Affiliated Hospitalists PLC and has continued her career in various roles for Affiliated. She currently serves as the Hospitalist Program Medical Director at the HonorHealth Scottsdale Thompson Peak Medical Center and Managing Partner for the group. Outside of the hospital, she enjoys spending time with her family including her spouse, three daughters, a dog, and reading.

Evan Holdsworth, MD Inpatient Dr. Holdsworth is a board certified internal medicine physician currently employed with Affiliated Hospitalists, a local hospitalist group located in Phoenix, Arizona. Previously worked for over two years as a private hospitalist before taking a position as primarily an academic hospitalist for a new internal medicine residency program in 2016. He is core faculty for the HonorHealth Internal Medicine Residency program.


Priya Radhakrishnan, MD Chief Academic Officer, Ambulatory Dr. Radhakrishnan is the Chief Academic Officer with responsibilities for all graduate, undergraduate and continuing medical education, faculty development, library science and clinical simulation activities. She brings more than 10 years of experience in the field of medical education including serving as clerkship director at the University of Arizona College of Medicine - Phoenix. She previously served as chair of Internal Medicine at Dignity Health St. Joseph’s Hospital and Medical Center. Dr. Radhakrishnan will build upon the foundation of the Academic Affairs department and continue to shape opportunities for growth in medical education to provide the highest quality of care for patients and families across the network. Currently she practices at the HonorHealth Medical Group Jomax Clinic.

Rustan Sharer, MD Ambulatory Dr. Rustan Sharer is a Phoenix native who studied Biomedical Engineering at ASU prior to graduating from the University of Arizona, College of Medicine – Phoenix. After internal medicine residency at Banner UMC-Phoenix, he was retained as Clinical Assistant Professor in the role of Outpatient Chief Resident in Quality & Patient Safety at the Phoenix VA Healthcare System. As Chief Resident, he both led and mentored numerous quality improvement and informatics initiatives while also teaching Quality & Safety seminars. He now performs several roles at HonorHealth, including: Director of Quality Initiatives for the Internal Medicine residency, Medical Director of Quality and Safety for the Medical Group, and Physician Informatics Champion (as an EPIC-Certified Physician Builder). Combining engineering principles (like Lean/Six-Sigma) with a passion for informatics-based clinical solutions, he has developed a unique, resident-driven, quality improvement and patient safety curriculum. He dreams for tomorrow’s physicians to not just adopt new technology, but to push the boundaries of technological advances as befits an increasingly digital world.


AMBULATORY FACULTY Grishma Sheth, MD Dr. Sheth grew up in Arizona, she was raised in Phoenix and spent 8 years in Tucson. She attended University of Arizona for her undergraduate and majored in Molecular and Cellular Biology and Psychology and she also attended medical school there. She did her internal medicine residency at Cedars-Sinai in Los Angeles. She now works as a primary care physician in Scottsdale and works with residents part time. She is passionate about resident teaching and development, preventative care, and women’s health. In her free time, she avidly enjoys baseball and strongly supports the Arizona Diamondbacks.

Jim Whitfill, MD As Chief Transformation Officer, Dr. Whitfill, brings leadership expertise in healthcare, organizational culture, and information technology to promote a customer-centric experience and offer new ways to deliver more complete, coordinated and accessible care. He brings together data, technology and marketing to advance technical innovations, such as call center technology, CRM systems, apps and digital tools, to give both the customer and caregivers an enhanced approach to care. By focusing the efforts of these business areas and finding the right digital tools, Dr. Whitfill aims to improve the customer journey so that it becomes more seamless and focused on the needs of the individual. The goal is to transform the organization into a more patient focused and provider friendly health system which better serves the surrounding community. Before joining HonorHealth, Dr. Whitfill served as chief medical officer for Innovation Care Partners, a clinically integrated network in Phoenix. He also serves as a clinical associate professor in the departments of Internal Medicine and Biomedical Informatics at the University of Arizona College of Medicine-Phoenix. Dr. Whitfill received his BA from Princeton University and his MD from the University of Pennsylvania. He trained in internal medicine at the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania, where he also completed a fellowship in medical informatics.

Kevin Ranum, MD Dr. Ranum graduated from University of Toledo College of Medicine and his residency was at Mercy St. Vincent Center Toledo, OH. He also has a Masters in Health Systems Management and a Master’s of Science Biomedical Science/Medical Science. Dr. Ranum is the nocturnist that oversees the Night Float rotation for the Internal Medicine Residency Program. He works with Affiliated Hospitalists.


ADDICTION MEDICINE Michael A. Sucher, MD, FASAM Dr. Sucher graduated at Wayne State University where he received a Bachelor of Science Degree and Medical Degree. Dr. Sucher’s internship was at Sinai Hospital of Detroit in Detroit, Michigan, and he underwent residency training at Indiana University Medical Center in Indianapolis, Indiana. From 1974 through 1994, Dr. Sucher practiced emergency medicine and served as emergency department director at two HonorHealth facilities in Scottsdale (Osborn and Shea). He served as President of the Medical Staff of Scottsdale Healthcare Osborn. He has served as the Acting Medical Director of the Division of Behavioral Health at the Department of Health Services, State of Arizona. He currently serves as the Chief Medical Officer for Community Bridges Inc., which is a community substance abuse and mental health treatment program in the greater Phoenix area and throughout the state of Arizona. He also served as the medical director for Community Medical Services from 2011-2016, which is the largest opioid treatment program in Arizona and also has programs in Montana, North Dakota and Alaska. He is the medical director of physician health for HonorHealth. He holds teaching positions throughout the greater Phoenix metropolitan area. He also recently directed the formation of the first addiction medicine fellowship program in Arizona as a collaboration between Community Bridges, Inc., and HonorHealth. He is serving as the initial fellowship program director. Dr. Sucher is a Distinguished Fellow of the American Society of Addiction Medicine. He was granted Diplomate Status by the American Board of Addiction Medicine in 2009. He is also certified as a Medical Review Officer by ASAM. Additionally, he is a past president of the Arizona Society of Addiction Medicine. He is a nationally known speaker on addiction medicine and professional health issues.

ALLERGY & IMMUNOLOGY Michael Manning, MD Dr. Manning attended medical school at the University of Texas Medical School in Houston. Dr. Manning pursued his Internal Medicine residency in Phoenix then completed an Allergy, Asthma and Immunology Fellowship at Scripps Clinic and Research Foundation in La Jolla, California. He is a Fellow in the American Academy of Allergy, Asthma and Immunology and the American College of Allergy, Asthma and Immunology. Dr. Manning is very active in many national, regional and state societies and is involved with research to continually improve the treatments of allergies and asthma. He is past president of the Western Society of Allergy, Asthma and Immunology and lectures frequently to physicians in Arizona and regionally.

Julie Wendt, MD Dr. Wendt earned a Ph.D in microbiology and immunology from Vanderbilt University and a Doctor of Medicine degree from the University of Tennessee College of Medicine. She completed residency at Rush-Presbyterian-St. Luke’s Medical Center and an allergy and immunology fellowship at Rush University Medical Center, both in Chicago. She has been in private practice since 2005.


CARDIOLOGY Wazhma Aslamy, MD Dr. Aslamy graduated Magna Cum Laude from Barrett's Honor College at Arizona State University then attended the University Arizona College of Medicine. After obtaining her Medical Doctorate in 1991, she returned to Phoenix for internal medicine training and then moved to Los Angeles to complete her cardiology training at University of Southern California and Kaiser Permanente Los Angeles. She is an invasive and general cardiologist with expertise in nuclear cardiology and echocardiography. Dr. Aslamy has been board certified in internal medicine and is currently board certified in cardiovascular disease. She is a designated Fellow of the American College of Cardiology (FACC) representing the highest level of training. She enjoys all aspects of the field with interest in congestive heart failure, preventive cardiology and valvular heart disease.

Robert Candipan, MD Dr. Candipan graduated from the University of Miami, Miller School of Medicine. He works in Phoenix, AZ, and specializes in cardiovascular disease and interventional cardiology. Dr. Candipan is affiliated with HonorHealth Deer Valley Medical Center and HonorHealth John C. Lincoln Medical Center.

Craig Peters, DO Dr. Peters is a cardiologist that works for the HonorHealth Medical Group. He graduated from Ohio University of Osteopathic Medicine and he did his residency at Cleveland Clinic. He’s board certified in internal medicine and cardiology. Dr. Peters provides lectures and small groups to the residents on cardiology.

David G. Rizik, MD Dr. Rizik graduated from the Saint Louis University School of Medicine in 1986. He works in Scottsdale, AZ and specializes in Cardiovascular Disease and Interventional Cardiology. Dr. Rizik is affiliated with HonorHealth Scottsdale Osborn Medical Center and HonorHealth Scottsdale Thompson Peak Medical Center.

Adam Sabbath, MD Dr. Sabbath, a cardiologist in Phoenix, is qualified to deliver comprehensive care for your cardiovascular system and heart. Dr. Sabbath oversees the ambulatory cardiology for the Internal Medicine residency.


Daniel Storch, MD Dr. Daniel Storch has been practicing cardiology in Scottsdale for over 20 years. He received his undergraduate degree from Union College, and his medical degree from the New York University School of Medicine in 1985. After completing his internal medicine internship and residency at the Bronx Municipal Hospital Center/Albert Einstein College of Medicine in New York, he stayed on for fellowships in adult cardiology and then interventional cardiology. Dr. Storch is triple board certified in internal medicine, cardiovascular diseases and nuclear cardiology. He is a designated Fellow of the American College of Cardiology. He serves as AZ Cardiology Group’s Nuclear Stress Lab Director and is chair of internal medicine at HonorHealth Scottsdale Thompson Peak Medical Center. His areas of clinical interest include coronary artery disease, angioplasty and stenting, congestive heart failure, lipid management and preventive cardiology. He has been recognized as one of Phoenix Magazine's TOP DOCs

DERMATOLOGY Christine C. Lin, MD Dr. Christine Lin joined Affiliated Dermatology in December 2005. She obtained her undergraduate degree from Massachusetts Institute of Technology and her medical degree from the University Of Southern California Keck School Of Medicine. Her internship in internal medicine was completed at the UCLA-San Fernando Valley Program in Sylmar, California. Dr. Lin completed her dermatology residency at Case Western Reserve University Hospitals of Cleveland. She served as the chief resident in Dermatology at Case Western Reserve University Hospitals of Cleveland. Dr. Lin is board certified by the American Board of Dermatology. Professional memberships include the American Academy of Dermatology, the American Society for Mohs Surgery, and the American Society for Dermatologic Surgery. She is our subspecialty coordinator for dermatology.

EMERGENCY MEDICINE Elliott Cropp, MD


ENDOCRINOLOGY Grace Matta, MD Dr. Grace Matta is a diplomate of the American Board of Endocrinology, Diabetes and Metabolism. She completed her residency training in Internal Medicine at Maricopa Medical Center in Phoenix, Arizona. Following her residency, she worked for three years as an internal medicine attending at Maricopa Medical Center and then completed an endocrinology fellowship at the VA Medical Center/Banner Good Samaritan. She has been practicing as an endocrinologist since 2001. Dr. Matta’s passion for medicine has earned her the Resident of the Year Award from Maricopa Medical Center. She loves to teach our residents.

Iyad Syoufi, MD Dr. Iyad Syoufi has been caring for his patients since he completed his residency training in Internal Medicine at St. John Hospital and Medical Center in Detroit, Michigan. He worked for four years as a hospitalist at Banner Good Samaritan Hospital in Phoenix, Arizona. Dr. Syoufi completed his endocrinology fellowship at the University of Arizona and now a diplomate of the American Board of Endocrinology, Diabetes and Metabolism. He is a member of the Endocrine Society and American Association of Clinical Endocrinologists.

ENT Daniel Hurley, MD Dr. Hurley graduated from Saint Louis University School of Medicine, St. Louis, MO, and his residency was at the same location. He is board certified in otolaryngology – Head and Neck Surgery. He also works at Valley ENT with Dr. Weiner.

Jordan Weiner, MD Dr. Weiner graduated from Albany Medical College and Fellowship in Mayo, Rochester, MN. He is board certified in Otolaryngology, Head and Neck Surgery. He is currently employed with Valley ENT.


GASTROENTEROLOGY Gavin Levinthal, MD Dr. Levinthal is a staff gastroenterologist at the HonorHealth Scottsdale Thompson Peak Medical Center campus. He is board certified in gastroenterology, hepatology and internal medicine. A native of South Africa, Dr. Levinthal received his medical degree from the University of The Witwatersrand in Johannesburg. He completed his internship and residency in South Africa before coming to the U.S. as an internal medicine resident at Mt. Sinai Medical Center in Cleveland, Ohio. Later he became chief resident in internal medicine and was a gastroenterology fellow at both Mt. Sinai Medical Center and Metrohealth Medical Center in Cleveland, Ohio.

Siva Talluri, MD Dr. Talluri is a gastroenterology specialist in Scottsdale, AZ. He is employed with HonorHealth Medical Group. He completed his residency at Metro Health Medical Center/Case Western Reserve University, Cleveland, Ohio.

Amar Thosani, MD Dr. Thosani is board certified in both gastroenterology and internal medicine. He specializes in many advanced procedures including endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography (ERCP), diagnostic and interventional endoscopic ultrasound (EUS), endoscopic treatment of Barrett's esophagus, endoscopic mucosal resection (an advanced technique to remove large tumors that otherwise would require surgery), endoluminal stent placement and single balloon enteroscopy to evaluate hard- to-reach areas of the small intestine.

Stuart Triester, MD Dr. Triester has been a gastroenterologist on staff at HonorHealth Scottsdale Thompson Peak Hospital since 2008 and has been working with the Internal Medicine Residency for the last year. He came to Arizona following seven years in Bellevue, WA, as both a gastroenterologist in private practice and as a hospitalist physician with the Overlake Hospital Medical Center in Bellevue. He earned his medical degree (summa cum laude) from Jefferson Medical College in Philadelphia, PA. He was an internal medicine resident at the University of Washington in Seattle and served his fellowship in gastroenterology at the Mayo Clinic in Scottsdale. He is board-certified in gastroenterology and hepatology.


GERIATRICS Helene Labonte, DO Dr. Labonte graduated medical school at the Arizona College of Osteopathic Medicine in Glendale, Arizona. Her residency was completed at the Mayo Clinic College of Medicine. She also completed a fellowship at Vanderbilt University Medical Center. She currently works at Mayo and our residents rotate with her there.

HEMATOLOGY/ONCOLOGY Andrew Buresh, MD

Subspecialty Coordinator Dr. Buresh attended medical school at the University of Nebraska College of Medicine and completed his fellowship at the Arizona Cancer Center in Tucson, where he would eventually serve as chief fellow and participate in research in the field of myelodysplasia. Dr. Buresh specializes in medical oncology, hematology and internal medicine. He is interested in all aspects of clinical oncology and hematology, with a particular interest in gastrointestinal, breast, lung, and prostate cancer, as well as myelodysplasia, coagulation disorders, lymphoma, and myeloma.

Brendan Curley, DO Dr. Curley specializes in medical oncology, hematology and internal medicine. His clinical interests include breast, colon, lung and prostate cancer, and has strong experience and interest in hematologic malignancies. He also enjoys caring for and treating all aspects of benign hematology. He has strong research background in improving patients’ quality of care and patient understanding of their diagnosis and treatment. He received his Bachelor of Science degree in biology from Seton Hall University in New Jersey. He completed medical school at Lake Erie College of Osteopathic Medicine in Erie, Pennsylvania. Dr. Curley completed both his internship and residency in internal medicine at Drexel University College of Medicine/ Hahnemann University Hospital, in Philadelphia, PA. He completed his fellowship in hematology/oncology at West Virginia University School of Medicine, where he served as chief fellow his final year. Dr. Curley has been published in several medical journals, including The Journal of Oncology Practice, Clinical Lymphoma, Myeloma, & Leukemia, and The American Journal of Medical Sciences. He authored the breast cancer chapter in fourth edition of The Bethesda Handbook of Clinical Oncology. Dr. Curley is a multi-year winner of the American Society of Clinical Oncology Merit Award awarded to fellows with highly regarded research. During fellowship, he was twice named fellow of the year and was recognized by the Department of Medicine for his academic excellence and research achievements.


Michael Gordon, MD Dr. Gordon specializes in medical oncology and hematology, and his principle interests have been in the development of new cancer therapies with a focus on targeted therapies as well as drugs that affect angiogenesis (tumor blood vessel supply). His disease focuses include kidney cancer, melanoma, prostate cancer, gastrointestinal stromal tumor (GIST) and ovarian cancer. In 2014, Dr. Gordon was named medical director for the Virginia G. Piper Cancer Center Clinical Trials, a partnership between HonorHealth and the Translational Genomics Research Institute. He first came to Arizona to become the associate dean for research for the Phoenix campus of the University of Arizona College of Medicine and subsequently founded the Arizona Cancer Center’s Drug Development Program in Scottsdale. Currently, Dr. Gordon also serves as an associate professor of clinical medicine at the University of Arizona College of Medicine. Dr. Gordon received his Bachelor of Science degree in Biomedical Sciences from the Sophie Davis School for Biomedical Education at the City College of New York and his Medical degree from the State University of New York at Buffalo School of Medicine. Following his graduation from medical school, Dr. Gordon performed his internship and residency in Internal Medicine at the University of Chicago Hospitals and Clinics. After completing his fellowship in hematology/oncology at Memorial Sloan- Kettering Cancer Center in 1991, he accepted a position at the Indiana University School of Medicine as a faculty member in the Section of hematology/oncology. During nine years on the faculty at Indiana University, Dr. Gordon played integral roles in the development of the Indiana University Cancer Center’s Biologics and Developmental Therapeutics Program, the Leukemia Program, Clinical Research Office, and the Scientific Review Committee. Dr. Gordon is a member of the American College of Physicians, American Society of Clinical Oncology, International Society of Experimental Hematology, American Society of Hematology, American Association for Cancer Research and New York Academy of Science. He has been awarded the American Cancer Society’s Clinical Oncology Career Development Award and has served as co-editor of Yearbook of Oncology.

ICU Heemesh Seth, DO Dr. Seth graduated medical school from Midwestern University in Glendale, A. His residency and his fellowship were completed at Banner Good Samaritan Medical Center, Phoenix, AZ. His professional Interest is Asthma, COPD, Lung Cancer, Advanced Lung Disease, Critical Care and personal Interest: Family, Friends, Running, and International Travel.

Aditya Gupta, MD Dr. Gupta is board certified in internal medicine, pulmonary, critical care and sleep and palliative care. He graduated medical school at the University of Delhi, New Delhi India. He completed his residency training at the University of Texas Health Science Center, in Houston, TX. Following his residency, he completed his pulmonary and critical care fellowship at the University of Texas Health Science Center and MD Anderson Cancer Center in Houston, TX.


INFECTIOUS DISEASE Laura Kay Schroeder, MD Dr. Schroeder is a graduate of Loyoa University Stritch School of Medicine. She completed residency and fellowship training in Chicago, IL. She moved to Arizona and opened the North Phoenix Infectious Disease Clinic. She is very active within our residency. She loves working with the residents and students.

Kara Asbury, MD Dr. Kara L Asbury is an Infectious Disease Specialist. She graduated with honors from Meharry Medical College School of Medicine. She completed her residency training and infectious disease fellowship at Mayo Clinic of Arizona. Dr. Asbury is actively involved in residents’ education.

NEPHROLOGY David Burstein, MD Dr. Burstein graduated medical school from the University of Minnesota – Minneapolis and completed residency at Rush University Medical Center. His fellowship was at UCLA Medical Center and Rush University Medical Center. He is part of the AKDHC practice group. In his spare time, his greatest pleasure is to spend time at home or traveling with his wife and two young daughters. He also enjoy a variety of outdoor sports and activities, which are what drew his family to the Phoenix/Scottsdale area.

Savas Petrides, MD Dr. Savas Petrides, MD is a nephrology doctor who practices in Scottsdale, AZ. Dr. Petrides is affiliated with Abrazo Arizona Heart Hospital, Abrazo Central Campus, Banner - Unviersity Medical Center Phoenix, Dignity Health - St. Joseph's Hospital and Medical Center and Honorhealth System. He participates with lecturing to our residents and precepts our nephrology rotations along with the rest of the team.

Jatinder Soni, MD Dr. Jatinder Soni, MD is a nephrology doctor who practices in Scottsdale, AZ. Dr. Soni is affiliated with HonorHealth Scottsdale Osborn Medical Center, HonorHealth Scottsdale Shea Medical Center and HonorHealth Scottsdale Thompson Peak Medical Center. He participates with lecturing to the residents and rotations.


NEUROLOGY Fern Arlen, MD Dr. Fern Arlen is board certified in neurology. She received her medical training in neurology at the Dent Neurological Institute in Buffalo, New York, and fellowship training in clinical neurophysiology at Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center in Lubbock, TX. Her internal medicine internship was at Suny Buffalo/Millard Fillmore Hospital in Buffalo, NY. Dr. Arlen is also an Adjunct Assistant Professor at the Arizona College of Medicine. Dr. Arlen treats patients with a wide range of neurological diseases; her special interests in neurology include migraine and Multiple Sclerosis.

Constantine Moschonas, MD Subspecialty Coordinator

Dr. Moschonas completed his undergraduate training in genetics and medical genetics at the University Of British Columbia (UBC). He completed his Internship and residency in internal medicine at the University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey. He completed his Neurology fellowship at the University of Arizona. During his tenure at the University of Arizona he was one of the investigators in the pivotal ACAS study. He was the chief resident and fellow in neurovascular sonography. Dr. Moschonas was a member of the American Heart Association Board of Trustees and the Chairman of the Halle Heart Centre Advisory Group in Tempe, Arizona, 2002. He lectures nationally and internationally on multiple neurology topics of expertise, including genetics and MS, refractory epilepsy and asymptomatic carotid stenosis.

OPHTHALMOLOGY Jonathan J. Levin, MD Dr. Levin is a general ophthalmologist and surgeon with Horizon Eye Specialist & Lasik Center. Dr. Levin takes care of all aspects of ophthalmic care, including cataract surgery, diabetes eye care, macular degeneration, retina diseases, glaucoma, eye emergencies, dry eye, eye lid surgeries, retina and yag laser procedures, and routine care. He is our ophthalmologist that educates the internal medicine residents in eye care. Dr. Levin grew up in Milwaukee, WI. He is an active member in several medical societies including the American Medical Association, American Academy of Ophthalmology, and American College of Surgeons. Dr. Levin is a Phi Beta Kappa graduate of the University of Wisconsin. He earned his medical degree a the Medical College of Wisconsin in Milwaukee. Dr. Levin completed his ophthalmology residency at the world renowned Mayo Clinic in Rochester, MN.


ORTHOPEDICS Amon Ferry, MD Dr. Ferry graduated from Rush Medical College and completed his resident training at Rush University Medical Center in Chicago. He did a fellowship in sports medicine at Harvard Sports Medicine Service in Boston. He is the Subspecialty Coordinator for Orthopedics for the Internal Medicine Residency at HonorHealth Thompson Peak Medical Center. He is going to give the residents a taste of orthopedics and sports medicine.

Bridgette Ronan, MD Dr. Ronan is board certified in internal medicine and pulmonary medicine. She attended medical school at Pennsylvania State University College of Medicine. She then completed her residency and fellowship at Mayo Clinic in Arizona. She is our subspecialty coordinator for pulmonary medicine for the residency.

RHEUMATOLOGY Paul Howard, MD Dr. Howard is a graduate Cum Laude from Georgetown University in biology and medicine. He completed his residency in Internal Medicine at the University of Arizona and fellowship in Rheumatology at Johns Hopkins University. Dr. Howard has been involved in private practice in Phoenix and Paradise Valley since 1984 and has participated as a clinical investigator in numerous clinical research trials developing new therapies for rheumatoid arthritis, lupus, Sjogren’s, juvenile rheumatoid arthritis, and osteoporosis. He is currently president of Arthritis Health, Ltd, an integrated medical practice dedicated to the care of adults and children with arthritis, metabolic bone and autoimmune disorders. As a teacher, he has helped train interns and residents in the Phoenix-area training programs in rheumatology and has developed nationally recognized courses concerning rheumatology care. As an active volunteer with the Arthritis Foundation since arriving in Phoenix, he helped develop the local Juvenile Arthritis Support Group, has participated on administrative and fundraising boards and lead the “Got 30” walk team in the annual Arthritis Foundation Walk each May. He is our rheumatology subspecialty coordinator.


Paramvir Sidhu, MD Dr. Paramvir Sidhu is a board certified rheumatologist specializing in care of rheumatoid arthritis, osteoporosis, psoriatic arthritis, ankylosing spondylitis, lupus, gout, vasculitis and osteoarthritis. Dr. Sidhu completed his residency and rheumatology fellowship at University of Arizona. Dr. Sidhu believes in patient centric care and provides individualized, evidence based medical care for rheumatic diseases. He focused his research on early diagnosis and treatment of various forms of inflammatory arthritis like rheumatoid arthritis. He is a fellow of American College of Rheumatology. Dr. Sidhu has been a clinical investigator in multiple clinical trials involving rheumatoid arthritis, lupus, osteoarthritis and other rheumatic diseases. Dr. Sidhu has multiple scientific publications in peer reviewed rheumatology journals and has been an expert speaker at multiple regional and national rheumatology conferences and workshops.

SPORTS MEDICINE Michael Puchowicz, MD Dr. Michael Puchowicz received his medical degree from Vanderbilt University School of Medicine. He completed a Pediatric Residency at the University of Arizona and went on to complete a fellowship in Sports Medicine at Cincinnati Children’s Hospital Medical Center / Wellington Orthopedics and Sports Medicine. He is ABP certified in Sports Medicine and Pediatrics and licensed by the Arizona Medical Board. He has experience working with multiple sports teams at the high school, club, and NCAA Division I level. Dr. Puchowicz came to ASU Health Services for the opportunity to serve as the Head Team Physician for Intercollegiate Club Sports, Team Physician for Division I Sports, and Health Services physician for the ASU student body. His practice philosophy is to provide a medical home tailored to meet the needs of young athletes and their active lifestyles. His goal for every patient is a return to full function and to get them back to school, sports, and work sooner and safer. He is our subspecialty coordinator for Sports Medicine.

Matthew D. Shores, MD Dr. Matthew D. Shores is the Director of Sports Medicine and Regional Medical Director for FastMed Urgent Care. He specializes in sports medicine. He completed his undergraduate education at Grand Canyon University in biology. He completed his medical school training at the University of Arizona College of Medicine in Tucson.


UROLOGY Bernard Gburek, MD Dr. Bernard Gburek is an urologist in Scottsdale, Arizona and is affiliated with multiple hospitals in the area, including HonorHealth Deer Valley Medical Center and HonorHealth Scottsdale Osborn Medical Center. He received his medical degree from University of Chicago Pritzker School of Medicine and has been in practice for more than 20 years. Upon graduation he was awarded a residency at Temple University Hospital where he completed two years of general surgery training and four years of urology training, including time spent at the Fox Chase Cancer Center. Dr. Kaplan has received multiple local, regional, and national accolades for his research on cancers of the urinary tract. In addition Dr. Kaplan is the author of multiple academic articles and textbook chapters.
