Chairman’s Welcome
Welcome!! It’s my special pleasure to welcome you to our 50th annual Summer Festival, celebrating and showcasing the breadth and diversity of arts activities in and around the town of Sevenoaks, continuing a tradition begun by Sevenoaks School in 1970. Next year’s our Golden Anniversary and we’d welcome your ideas for that – don’t be shy!! The detailed programme for this year is presented on the following pages, displayed with event titles colour-coded according to genre as listed under “Festival Programme” on pages 4 & 5, an “at a glance” listing of this year’s quality offerings from community groups and our own celebrity events. Festival Fair, centred in Bligh’s Meadow, once again opens the programme, with entertainment, performances and activities throughout Saturday 22 June, including the Youth & Community Music Stage, the Festival Furries Hunt for the young & not-so-young, stilt-walkers, jugglers, musicians, magicians and other ‘walkabout’ entertainers, plus tickets for our Grand Prize Draw go on sale. Elsewhere in Sevenoaks, we feature once again the amazing experience that is Colourscape in the Vine Gardens, where we also site an Art Tent for Kids. The Drive Methodist Church is this year’s venue for Wishworks’ Interactive Puppet Shows Goldifox, Snow Grey & Whispering Smith, while The Shambles is the venue for Clare & Mark Seddon’s Nursery Rhyme Singalong, Punch & Judy, singing and magic – all for our younger visitors. The Town Council’s Charity Fayre takes place on Saturday 29 June in the Vine Gardens, as part of Armed Forces Day activities and events with music from the Kent Police Band. As ever, we thank our Principal Sponsor, Sevenoaks Town Council for its continued support of activities organised by volunteers for the benefit of the whole community, Bligh’s Meadow for sponsoring Festival Fair and Kent County Council for its grant via Cllr Margaret Crabtree to fund the Youth & Community Music Stage. We also thank Bligh’s Meadow, Sevenoaks Chronicle and Sevenoaks School as our major sponsors, our event & flag sponsors, our patrons, members, friends and, of course, our participants. Huge thanks to Malabar Coffee Shop for its collaboration in use of The Shambles, to Sevenoaks and Walthamstow Hall Schools for their continuing support and to our other sponsors for their valued patronage: ArchiLabs7, Berkeley Homes, Francis Jones Jewellers, Handelsbanken, INDEX Magazine, KMfm, Russell Harper Photography, Sanlam, Sevenoaks Chamber of Commerce, Sevenoaks District Arts Council, Sevenoaks Society, Sheffords, Spain Williams, Specsavers, Strutt & Parker. Festival Box Office this year is online at Ticketsource – see panel opposite. Special thanks are due once again to Laura Piggot for our brochure design, to Rose Bates for developing our applications processing system and to loading events onto Ticketsource, to Mark Lowton, our Independent Examiner, for facilitating our accounting system, to Janet Boswell for running our Smartest Artist Quiz and our Grand Prize Draw and to all our helpers for freely giving their time and skills. Above all, I must thank my Committee members pictured below - without them, I wouldn’t be writing!! Do send me your thoughts, suggestions and offers of help: rayrussell@sevenoaksfestival.org.uk Ray Russell - Chairman - Sevenoaks Summer Festival

About our Founding Sponsor
Sevenoaks School is the co-founder of the Sevenoaks Summer Festival and has supported it since the inaugural event of 1970. The school was founded in 1432 by William Sevenoke, Mayor of London, who was said to have been a foundling of Sevenoaks. He left money to open a free grammar school and almshouses in the town, providing for children and adults in need of education and accommodation. Today we are a leading International Baccalaureate school delivering a global education to over 1050 students, some 70 per cent of whom still come from within ten miles of Sevenoaks. Friday 28 June Cathy - A Retelling of Wuthering Heights Michael Bascom and Friends This new musical by Michael Bascom tells the story of Heathcliff and Cathy, two lovers almost psychically bound to each other but continually thwarted by family, society and fate. Heathcliff has just returned to Wuthering Heights after mysteriously disappearing for several years having made his wealth, but Cathy is now bound by other circumstances. The sun shines over the moors, but inside the storm of vengeance is brewing. In a retelling of Emily Bronte’s classic, this new musical tells the story of a passion which transcends life – and death – itself. St Luke's Church 8:00 PM £5.00 by payment on day The musical follows the story of Cathy in Wuthering Heights. It is a drama and the themes are deep. However, there is no sex or nudity but 2 scenes could be seen as slightly violent.
A Midsummer Night's Dream Sevenoaks Shakespeare has been presenting Shakespeare as part of the Festival since 2009, and is delighted to present possibly the most widely-seen and appreciated of Shakespeare’s works: A MIDSUMMER NIGHT’S DREAM. Come with your own folding chair and relax in the garden of The White Rock Inn as we transport you to an enchanted wood on a Midsummer’s Night, where four young lovers find themselves wrapped in the enchantment of sprites and faerie-folk. While feuding rulers clash, and lovers fly the tyranny of authority, the working man, ever resilient, turns his hand to the latest challenge from above, desperate to impress the powers….whoever theymay be! Comedy abounds as the hapless Bottom (and everyone else) is tormented by the mischievous Puck, and the play ends with the presentation, by the Best Amateur Drama Group in the Area, of their latest blockbuster to the Royal Court. Maybe they’ll get away with it? Maybe they’ll get their heads cut off? You decide…. Sunday 30 June A Monarchy of Misfits
David Starkey The marriage of Prince Harry and Meghan Markle, when the second son of the Prince of Wales married a divorced American actress of mixed race and uncertain religion, was seen as marking a fundamental modernisation of the British monarchy. Actually, it was only a return to the 14th century when one of the many sons of King Edward III married a twice-divorced merry widow who’d eloped with her first husband at the age of 12; another a part-Moorish Spanish princess who (it is claimed) was a direct descendent of the Prophet Muhammad; while a third wed the au pair! This talk traces the radically shifting marriage customs of the British monarchy, from the laxity of the Middle Ages, through the stringencies of the Hanoverians, to the House of Windsor and its sometimes contorted adaptations to the realities of modern family life. The talk will be followed by a Q&A session and book-signing.

Rick Wakeman
A Fellow of the Royal College of Music, Professor of the London College of Music, former YES keyboard player, Watchdog presenter and renowned Grumpy Old Man, Rick Wakeman has led a rich and varied life. Celebrating his 70th birthday this year, he was instrumental in The Strawbs' rise to fame but marks 1969 as the true start of his career, when he recorded Space Oddity with David Bowie. In this one-man solo show, he recounts hilarious and unlikely anecdotes from a career which has included musical collaborations with not only Bowie, but also Cat Stevens and Elton John, as well as worldwide tours with his own bands, punctuated by displays of dazzling virtuosity on the piano.
