Chairman’s Welcome
Welcome!! It’s my pleasure to welcome you to our 49th annual Summer Festival, celebrating and showcasing the breadth and diversity of arts activities in and around the town of Sevenoaks, continuing a tradition begun by Sevenoaks School in 1970. Next year’s our 50th and we’d welcome your ideas for that and for our Golden Anniversary in 2020 – don’t be shy!! The detailed programme for this year is presented on the following pages, displayed with event titles colour-coded according to genre as listed under “Festival Programme” on pages 4 & 5, an “at a glance” listing of this year’s quality offerings from community groups and our own celebrity events. Festival Fair, centred in Bligh’s Meadow, once again opens the programme, with entertainment, performances and activities throughout Saturday 23 June, including our popular Youth Music Stage, the Festival Furries Hunt for the young & not-so-young, stilt-walkers, jugglers, musicians, magicians and other ‘walkabout’ entertainers, plus tickets for our Grand Prize Draw go on sale. Elsewhere in Sevenoaks, we feature once again the amazing experience that is Colourscape in the Vine Gardens, where we also site an Art Tent for Kids. Stag Plaza hosts Wishworks’ Interactive Puppet Shows Goldifox, Snow Grey & Whispering Smith, while The Shambles is the venue for Clare & Mark Seddon’s Nursery Rhyme Singalong, Punch & Judy, singing and magic – all for our younger visitors. The Town Council’s Charity Fayre takes place on Saturday 30 June in the Vine Gardens, as part of Armed Forces Day activities and events, including commemoration of the end of WWI. As ever, we thank our Principal Sponsor, Sevenoaks Town Council for its continued support of activities organised by volunteers for the benefit of the whole community, Bligh’s Meadow for sponsoring Festival Fair and Kent County Council for its grant via Cllr Margaret Crabtree to fund the Youth Music Stage. We also thank Bligh’s Meadow, Sevenoaks School and Sevenoaks Chronicle as our major sponsors, our event & flag sponsors, our patrons, members, friends and, of course, our participants. Many thanks also to Stag Theatre for providing Box Office and publicity facilities, to Malabar Coffee Shop for its collaboration in use of The Shambles, to Sevenoaks and Walthamstow Hall Schools for their continuing support and to our other sponsors for their valued patronage: ArchiLabs7, Donnington Manor Hotel, EASi Recruitment, Francis Jones Jewellers, Handelsbanken, INDEX Magazine, Knocker & Foskett, Russell Harper Photography, Sevenoaks District Arts Council, Spain Williams, Specsavers, Strutt & Parker and Warners Solicitors Special thanks are due once again to Laura Piggot for our brochure design, to Rose Bates for developing our applications processing system, to Mark Lowton, our Auditor, for facilitating our accounting system, to John Power for organising our volunteers and brochure distribution, to Janet Boswell for running our Smartest Artist Quiz and our Grand Prize Draw and to all our helpers for freely giving their time and skills. Above all, I must thank John Levett for his expert advice and booking skills and my Committee members pictured below - without them, I wouldn’t be writing!! Do send me your thoughts, suggestions and offers of help: rayrussell@sevenoaksfestival.org.uk

Sunday 24 June The Big Chris Barber Band
The Big Chris Barber Band Chris Barber OBE (87) is one of the last British Jazz legends around and an icon of traditional jazz in the United Kingdom. For nearly 70 years he has been active in the music scene: promoting, recording and releasing music and touring with his band. The BIG Chris Barber Band (10-piece!), inspired by the great Ken Colyer Jazz Men, features everything from New Orleans to blues to late 20's Ellington, played with extraordinary panache and skill. On this special night, you will hear songs from that age and Chris’ favourites like "Bourbon Street Parade", "Jubilee Stomp", "Petite Fleur", “Ice Cream”, "When the Saints Go Marching In" and many more. They stand out as one of the finest, if not the finest band of its kind anywhere in the world. You can count on an exciting evening of high quality jazz and blues which will appeal in equal measure to the aficionado and the newcomer.

Sevenoaks Shakespeare Society Shakespeare’s final work wholly attributed to him and regarded as his farewell to his faithful audience. Performed first before King James at Whitehall, William made sure that the play contained all the magic, song and dance that the King and many of his subjects were fascinated by. In the early seventeenth century there was much excitement in witchcraft and the thrill of voyages by sea to discover new lands. This play reflects this outward looking view, but it considers, also, the misdeeds of ambitious men with the realisation that such transgressions, which could attempt to overturn the natural order, will eventually be punished. This is one of his most accessible plays, containing beautiful poetry, knockabout comedy, wicked conspiracy and, of course, a beguiling love affair. Jane Austen At Home A lively and varied recital/performance, with engaging drawing-room intimacy, celebrating the life, mind and writings of one of our greatest novelists. This one-woman show, consisting entirely of Jane Austen’s words, celebrates the variety and wit of her writings, with extracts from her memoirs, letters, juvenilia, poetry and novels. It takes us into the attitudes, imagination and sensations of those who lived in country houses and rectories in the early nineteenth century. All Jane Austen is here - from the familiar voices of the Bennets in conversation with Mr Collins to the unknown Austen of the juvenilia. The readings from Austen's letters take on a particular poignancy in the village she called home for the final years of her life. The musical cues are played on the harpsichord by Sevenoaks School student, Mika Curson. Sponsored by:

Today we are a leading International Baccalaureate school delivering a global education to over 1050 students, some 70 per cent of whom still come from within ten miles of Sevenoaks. Festival Sponsors
About our Major Sponsors Sevenoaks Town Council The Town Council has been a sponsor for many years and the Principal Sponsor since 2004, continuing as such for 2018 despite the economic pressures. The Council considers Summer Festival not only important for the well-being of local residents but also a real draw for visitors, adding vibrancy to the town and the local economy. The Council aspires to support all sectors of the local community, either by provision of facilities, including the Stag (now managed by an independent charity), community centres, open spaces, and allotments, or supporting the voluntary sector via grants and local businesses through its involvement in Sevenoaks Town Partnership www.sevenoakspartnership.org. www.sevenoakstown.gov.uk

Now 137 years old, the first issue appeared on Friday February 18, 1881 and, with the exception of two missing weeks during the national printers' strike in 1959, the newspaper has never failed to appear. It is one of the oldest business enterprises in Sevenoaks and is now part of the Trinity Mirror group. As well as publishing a weekly newspaper every Thursday, there’s round-the-clock, seven-day-a-week coverage on our dedicated website kentlive.news.
