The STEAM Academy at The John Carroll School is designed to encourage and motivate students who display a love of science and/or mathematics. The Academy endeavors to provide each student with the opportunity to explore the many different science, technology, engineering, arts, and mathematics fields. It encourages real-world experience and independent exploration. Area businesses, univer-sities, and federal agencies helped to develop the curriculum, and the School has entered into formal collaborative agreements with businesses such as Battelle Memorial Institute.

STEAM ACADEMY GRADUATION CRITERIA • Minimum cumulative GPA of 3.75 over 4 years • No final course grade below 75 in science or math • Earn 4 credits in Math beginning with Honors or Advanced Algebra II in Grade 9 • Earn 4 credits in Science • Earn 3 additional credits in approved STEAM electives or optional Math/Science courses that must include SCL I and SCL II, Intro. to Drawing and Design; at least one semester must be a Computer Science elective • 2 or more of the Math/Science courses or electives must be at the AP level • During junior and/or senior year, be a contributing member of a competitive John Carroll academic-style team, i.e. “It’s Academic,” Robotics, Chem-a-thon, Enviro-thon, etc. The team moderator will provide an evaluation of the student’s contribution. In lieu of a John Carroll team, students can enter and participate in a competitive science fair competition.

Why STEAM? The goal of the STEAM program is to immerse our students in a rigorous, STEAM-Centric Learning (SCL) environment. The progression through SCL I and SCL II, combined with our wide range of STEAM electives and AP level courses, will provide our students with the comprehensive technical skills required to be successful. We want our students to be prepared for their inevitable transition to a technologically demanding and challenging higher education environment.
