SENIOR PROJECT Personalized • Relevant Self-Directed Learning

Senior Project allows students to explore a career, serve the community, express themselves creatively, or pursue a passion.

Project Categories CAREER EXPLORATION Projects focus on potential careers, such as: • constructing a 3D prostatic arm • interning with a circuit court judge • writing a series of short stories • shadowing a forensic scientist COMMUNITY SERVICE Projects focus on student-generated services for the general community, such as: • participating in a mission trip to a children’s home in Honduras or a school in Haiti • staging a prom for individuals with special needs or traveling to Vietnam to work in a center for children with special needs • constructing & filling a pantry room in a home for abused women and children • working one-to-one with a child fighting cancer CREATIVE EXPRESSION/ PURSUIT OF A PASSION OR DREAM Projects involve creation & exhibition of student work or exploration of dreams or passions, such as: • learning scuba diving and underwater photography, then creating an undersea photo book • taking lessons to obtain a private pilot’s license or EMT certification • creating videos to honor Holocaust survivors and save their stories • producing , directing & staging a full-length play

Mission Statement for Senior Project  Provides a yearlong in-depth real-world, performance/project based educational opportunity  Provides a venue for critical thinking, independent expression, personal responsibility, and individual growth  Empowers each senior to explore a passion, to stretch as a learner, and to foster the ability to design and execute successful independent choices  Encourages seniors to strive for excellence and a sense of a job done well rather than to settle for mediocrity in any endeavor they pursue  Serves as a synthesis of the educational opportunities to which students have been exposed and solidifies a desire to be life-long learners who possess a sense of community and global awareness and responsibility.

Reflections from Students Emma Balint, Class of 2020: University of Mary Washington My heart hurts for our class, but that doesn’t take away from all the amazing experiences I’ve had at John Carroll. I’ve made so many wonderful friendships, been taught by outstanding teachers and have had so many opportunities to grow academically, spiritually and emotionally. COVID-19 did nothing but grow the love that I have for my school even more.

Charles Hafer, Class of 2020: West Virginia Wesleyan College I did most of my work in the fall and winter but was also planning to coach baseball in the spring as well as the summer. Senior Project was such a great learning experience for me, and I enjoyed it very much. I am so glad that I had the opportunity to do it.

It taught me so much about myself and how to be a leader, and for that I am very grateful.

Senior Project: Creative Expression Underwater Photography

Allison Lozinak, Class of 2011 St. Francis University My Senior Project was one of my best experiences at JC. I brought Catholic recording artist, Matt Maher to JC, and wrote a book about my faith journey. My project helped me to finally open up about my Catholic faith for the first time, to dream big and to make that dream come true.

Katherine Flanigan, Class of 2014: Mt. St. Mary’s University The best aspect of Senior Project is the feeling that you have accomplished your goal and everything that you have set out to do. My strongest memory is the day I got my books in the mail. Being able to hold my completed story and see my art on the cover was an amazing feeling. The process did not come without challenges, but I learned from them, which is how I grew as a person from my project.

Charles Emely, Class of 2017: St. Mary’s College of Maryland So what, if I created my own fantasy world by writing a collection of short stories; if I spent ages slowly crafting my world in a labor of love? It all amounts to nothing if I don’t share it with the world. I want the world to be entertained by what I give out. I believe I’ve gained that ability as a writer through this Senior Project; it is a blessing that I will hold dearly for the rest of my life. This experience is not afforded to everyone. I will cherish it.
