The skills developed in our courses allow students to analyze and solve problems that will confront them in today’s world.

Course Descriptions Algebra I Topics include solving and graphing linear equations, inequalities, and systems of equations; factoring; operations with polynomial, exponential, rational, and radical expressions; and solving quadratic equations.

Geometry / Advanced Geometry / Honors Geometry Topics include congruence, perpendicularity, parallelism, polygons, similarity, circles, inequalities, area, and volume. Students learn to construct deductive proofs and are introduced to Euclidean geometry.

Algebra II / Advanced Algebra II / Honors Algebra II Topics include operations on polynomials, factoring, irrational numbers, and expressions; relations and functions; and graphing and solving linear, quadratic exponential, and logarithmic equations.

Algebra III / Honors Algebra III Topics include coordinate geometry integrated with algebraic concepts; solving and graphing inequalities; operations on complex numbers; and exponential, polynomial, and logarithmic functions.

Honors Trigonometry Topics include trigonometric functions, applications, identities, and addition formulas; and triangle trigonometry. Graphing is stressed whenever possible.

Honors Pre-Calculus Topics include polynomial, rational, radical, exponential, and logarithmic functions and their graphs; and graphing conic sections. Students study multiple representations from algebraic, graphical, numerical, and analytical perspectives.

Probability and Statistics Statistical methods are presented with a focus on understanding the suitability of the method and the meaning of the result. Methods and measurements are developed in the context of applications. Probability is introduced with concepts and applications.

Honors Calculus Topics include a review of essential algebraic topics, trigonometry, and analytic geometry, and rates of change. Differentiation and integration are introduced with their applications.

AP Calculus (AB/BC) These courses follow syllabi approved by the College Board and prepare students for the AP Calculus AB or BC exams. The courses place emphasis on intuitive understanding of the concepts of differential and integral calculus and experience with its methods and applications. AP Calculus BC introduces students to sequences and series.

AP Statistics This course follows a syllabus approved by the College Board and prepares students for the AP Statistics exam. Statistical methods are carefully presented with a focus on understanding both the suitability of the method and the meaning of the result. Students are exposed to four broad conceptual themes: 1. Exploring Data 2. Sampling and Experimentation 3. Anticipating Patterns 4. Statistical Inference

Mathematics Department & Faculty The goal of the John Carroll School Mathematics Department is to give the students a solid background in mathematics that allows them to succeed in college and life. The skills developed in our courses allow students to analyze and solve problems that will confront them in today’s world.

The teachers in this department communicate mathematical ideas orally and in writing, and use technology as a tool for learning. The graphing calculator is one main form of technology used in the classroom. The students are required to take four years of mathematics including Algebra 1, Geometry, and Algebra 2 to meet graduation requirements.

Upper level courses are offered according to the needs of the students.

Class of 2026 Math Placement Testing Dates Monday May 2, Tuesday May 3, and Wednesday May 4, 2022 at 3 pm: Algebra 1 (Only students who will have completed a full year of Algebra 1 by the end of their 8th grade year should take this test. Successful performance on this test merits placement into either Honors or Advanced Algebra 2.)

Tuesday May 17 and Wednesday May 18, 2022 at 3 pm: Geometry* (Only students who will have completed a full year of Geometry by the end of their 8th grade year should take this test. This test is to be exempt from taking Geometry during a student’s 10th grade year at John Carroll.) *You MUST register in advance to take the Geometry test. Email rtorres@johncarroll.org to register. You do NOT have to register to take the Algebra 1 test.
