Hitting It Out of the Park: How a New Baseball Facility Will Make an Impact on the Field and in the Classroom

The time-lapse video you can view at johncarroll.org/ alumnifield showing the dramatic transformation of John Carroll’s baseball field from a November groundbreaking to the opening pitch of the season in March is nothing short of remarkable.

But what the video doesn’t show is even more extraordinary: how the construction of this new baseball field will power the dreams of not just future athletes, but future coders, programmers, data analysts and journalists, as the project opens the door to new opportunities in fields far beyond just that of baseball.

FRAMING THE PITCH The collaboration between the Kutcher family (Dr. Sue Weller Kutcher ’85 & her husband, Dr. John Kutcher, as well as sons Tim ’15, Steven ’17 and Joey ’22), John Carroll school leadership and the Patriots baseball program started with a revolutionary idea — to create an innovative, co-curricular space that would benefit all John Carroll students. In addition to the new Alumni Field at Kutcher Foundation Stadium, future phases of the project will support creative learning spaces both on and off the field, with unique programs and educational experiences in the fields of computer science, data analytics and sports journalism. The project was made possible through a generous grant — the largest in the history of the school — from the Kutcher Foundation, a Harford County-based private operating foundation.

The John Carroll School President Steve DiBiagio’s enthusiasm about this new project and the state-of-the-art spaces it will create is palpable. In talking about the Kutcher’s gift and the change it will bring to the school, Mr. DiBiagio states, “This gift is special because it is a catalyst for thinking differently about how we purposefully merge curricular and co-curricular. People have been talking about a project like this for years — we are

actually doing it. This is an undeniable, visible, clear step about how John Carroll will innovate education and provide unique experiences that are impactful.” He adds, “This is a continuation of all the work that has gone before us to make John Carroll a great school. It is another step on a journey that started half a century ago. We are building on the hard work and vision of those who went before us. But this is not the last big thing we are going to do; this is just the start!”

Dr. John Kutcher elaborates on some of the opportunities the new field will provide, saying, “I think there will probably be many senior projects that align with the field and STEAM, and I think it even goes outside of that into the arts and media, creating opportunities for sports journalism and broadcasting.

Journalism students can write about games, students can broadcast games, run analytics and put together game recap videos. It’s really preparing students for the future; they’ll literally be doing the jobs they would do not only in college, but after college. Doing that in their formative years gives them an edge, and you know small edges translate into huge advantages in life.”

Ed. Note: In February, Mr. Kelso, who also serves as Maryland Stadium Authority Chairman, worked with the Baltimore Orioles to secure a two-year lease extension for the use of Oriole Park at Camden Yards.

BASES LOADED The centerpieces for this new initiative include a state-of-the-art Innovation Center and a collegiate-caliber baseball facility that will serve as real-world laboratories for innovative curricula in STEAM, data science and media studies. Initial renovations are already complete for the Innovation Center and the new baseball field, which opened for play in time for the 2021 spring season. The field has a synthetic surface and features a removable mound and adjustable bases to support additional use by the school’s softball team. Subsequent work will add new dugouts, seating, press box, lights and a jumbotron scoreboard.

John Carroll students are known for their extracurricular involvement, with 80% of students participating in athletics.

Dr. Sue Kutcher reflects on this legacy of involvement, saying, “Extra-curricular activities have always been highly promoted at JC, and my children were very heavily involved in them. I believe participation in extra-curricular activities is a vital part of the learning and growing experience of students. I wanted to support the new baseball facility to improve the experiences that the players have, as well as all of those involved in running the program. The new baseball facility also provides an environment for camaraderie and fellowship, which helps build a strong community of players and families.”

Director of Athletics Mr. Seth Goldberg adds, “We are extremely fortunate to be a part of such a special community. To see our continued growth as a school, athletic program and community during these times speaks volumes. This baseball field is, and will continue to be, a visible symbol of John Carroll moving forward and continuing our growth, even in the most challenging times. It will continue to show the important role our families, current and past, play in that growth. The best part of it all, every time students drive around that circle, they will see that Patriot head on the field as a reminder that we are continuing to grow and get better daily!”

Coach Darrion Siler ’01 is thrilled about the large impact this will have on his program, stating, “Having one of the best high school baseball facilities in the country will continue to put us on the map as an elite baseball program and institute of learning. Harford County has some of the best baseball talent in Maryland, and one of the goals is to attract local talent.”

Softball Coach Sherry Hudson acknowledges the benefits for her team as well, saying, “The softball team is very excited for the completion of the stadium which will allow us to practice and potentially play games on. It will provide a great opportunity for the girls to prepare for schools that regularly play on turf. In addition, it provides a great academic tool for students who might be interested in broadcasting, media relations and statistical analysis.”

Speaking of the facility itself, Mr. Matthew Regan, AIA, Sr. Project Manager in the Archdiocese of Baltimore’s Division of Facilities and Real Estate, says he has seen many athletic fields redone but has never encountered a project as comprehensive as this one, stating, “The field’s siting is perhaps the most highly visible of any on the entire campus. It is inherently a “front door” experience to everyone arriving at the school. The new stadium concept…will make this the jewel of the campus. This stadium will be no mere high school baseball field. It is envisioned to be modeled and built to comply as best as possible with collegiate facilities so that our kids will be in a true college prep work environment from the day they start.”

Assistant Coach Tim Kutcher ’15, a former collegiate baseball player, knows firsthand the value of such a project, and shares, “I’ve gained an incredible experience from a strong community centered around baseball, particularly at John Carroll and continuing into my college baseball experience at Johns Hopkins.

I am excited to help bring a college-level experience for the players and families in the program at John Carroll.”

LEAD RUNNER Future phases of the project will include equipping the facility with sports analytics and broadcasting equipment to help launch innovative educational classes to prepare students for modern careers in media, math and science.

Coach Kutcher, Coach Siler and Math Department Chair Mr. Rob Torres work together to co-moderate this club, occasionally bringing in special guests as they did during a February meeting at which

Additionally, our student newspaper staff members will be able to cover the opening and continued operations of the field both through articles and through photography.”

There is discussion about integration with even more disciplines and departments, and with a project like this, the possibilities are almost endless!

In addition to being an innovative project, this is also a project of love. Dr. Sue Kutcher says, “I am very proud to be a John Carroll alumna. I believe that John Carroll provided me with the educational and moral foundations that have been instrumental to the successes that I have achieved in life. My love of John Carroll grew immensely once my children started at school. My

The generosity of the Kutcher family to John Carroll reaches back to the earliest days of the Advancement Office. Through annual gifts to the school, which began with a $20 donation in 1994, Sue and John have always given back to help ensure John Carroll remains a premiere school. Their most recent gift through The Kutcher Foundation to support learning spaces on the baseball field and in the classroom is simply incredible. These campus spaces will provide new, exciting opportunities for our students, and the family’s generosity will inspire our giving community, demonstrating what is possible when we come together to support John Carroll students. Accolades for John Carroll John Carroll is proud to have earned three prominent awards this school year!

The Harford County Chamber of Commerce presented John Carroll with its prestigious Andy Klein Legacy Award, named for JC alumnus Andy Klein ’71.

“Harford Magazine” readers once again named John Carroll Harford’s Best Private School for the third year in a row, with Principal Durkin earning an honorable mention for Best Principal.

John Carroll was named a “Baltimore Sun” Top Workplace for 2020! This year has given us more reasons than ever before to be grateful for our incredible faculty and staff, whose tireless dedication and commitment to our students makes John Carroll such a special place.

AROUND SCHOOL 1 This fall, we welcomed 181 new freshmen, 12 sophomores, 16 juniors and 7 seniors to the Patriot Family. New Patriot Socials gave incoming students the opportunity to meet their classmates and faculty and staff while taking part in fun games and challenges.

2 Seniors capped off a day of SAT testing with a little good-natured competition in the Senior Olympics!

3 The Admissions team also found creative ways for prospective students to virtually connect with John Carroll, including a first ever Virtual Open House (openhouse. johncarroll.org) that was a huge success! Other admissions events included private tours, a series of Zoom calls and even a chance to virtually attend a class.

5 Mrs. Doyle, Mr. Grzanna and the SGA got creative for this year’s Spirit Week, putting together a fun-filled week that included dress-down days, tie-dye and even a movie night at Gerry Gray Stadium!

6 Freshmen and juniors gathered in small groups for a new twist on class retreats. Led by their peers and faculty assistants, students participated in a variety of activities designed to deepen their relationships with God and with each other.

7 We are blown away by the efforts of John Carroll students, faculty and staff who combined to create nearly 1,000 Blessing Bags and greeting cards for those in need during Catholic Schools Week.

So many bags were collected that it took three trips to deliver them to their destinations!

8 John Carroll’s annual Thanksgiving Food Drive was another success, with all donations going to the Bel Air United Methodist Church and St. Francis de Sales Catholic church food pantries.

John Carroll’s chapter of the National Honor Society gained 75 new members at a Virtual Induction Ceremony. New members and their families were invited to school to pick up their certificate and a special gift and to sign “The Book,” which has been signed by each inductee since the chapter was founded in 1968.

John Carroll families supplied 117 Boxes of Joy to benefit Cross Catholic Outreach. These were distributed as Christmas presents to children in Haiti, the Dominican Republic, Nicaragua, El Salvador, Grenada, Guatemala and the Bahamas.

During his tenure, Mr. Durkin has made an indelible mark on our community through his work with the St. Joseph Program, The Archbishop John Carroll Scholarship Program and the Speech and Debate Team, among many other areas.

Our students entertained me with their talents, educated me with their insights, and blessed me with their dedication to academics, extracurriculars, and service to their community. As I prepare to embark on a new life journey, I will take so many fond memories of John Carroll with me.

But I must confess, my most cherished memory will be the Sophomore English class I taught in 2017– 2018. I can’t help but remember what it was like on the first day of school. These young students suddenly had the new Principal as their teacher.

Yet, seamlessly, we developed a rapport that transformed our classroom into a learning environment for all of us. I may have taught them English, but they taught me so much more. They taught me about their school, their culture, and their passions.

In 36 years, that was one of the best, if not the best class, I have ever had the pleasure of teaching. They were more than just my students; they were my daily blessings, and I will be

Buena Suerte, Señora Michael!

After 40 years as a Patriot, long-time Spanish instructor Mrs. Jane Michael will retire at the conclusion of this school year.

During her time at John Carroll, Mrs. Michael taught all levels of Spanish, served as World Languages Department chair and, for many years, coordinated a successful exchange program with Colegio Nuestra Señora de los Infantes in Toledo, Spain. In addition, she led students on numerous trips to Spain, Portugal, France, Italy and Greece.

Mrs. Michael sought not only to teach her students a new language, but to instill in them a love of learning and a sense of curiosity about other cultures. Every Patriot Has a Story 1 Noah McCann ’21 was named a Commended Student by the National Merit Scholarship Program after scoring in the top 50,000 of the over 1.5 million students who took the PSAT/NMSQT. 2 Ava Freeland ’23 was honored at the Women of Tomorrow Awards, presented by County Executive Barry Glassman and the Harford County Commission for Women to young women whose commitment to community service and accomplishments in the classroom have established them as their generation’s female leaders of the future.

3 Chloe Davies ’23, Gracious Ndungu ’23, Sierra Simmons ’23, Cassie Rodgers ’22, Reagan McComas ’23, Meghan Kerr ’23, Izzy Cole ’23, and Olivia Chesla ’23 participated in Ally to Humanity’s Save A Life event to support suicide prevention efforts. The group made over 400 cards with messages of support and the number for the National Suicide Prevention Hotline to display at various locations throughout Baltimore.

4 Jason Yan ’22 spent weekends volunteering at First Fruits Farm, an organization dedicated to providing fresh produce to those in the Mid-Atlantic region struggling with food insecurity, and assisting with their corn and potato harvests.

Suoyi Feng ’22 earned a bronze medal in S.T. Yau High School Science Awards for his potential treatment for nasal allergies using a mouse model. His award was presented via Zoom by a panel of researchers from Harvard University.

5 John Carroll Board Trustee Sheila Dews-Johnson P ’16 has been selected as one of “Diversity Plus” magazine’s Best of the Best Champions of Diversity for 2020! In her role at McCormick & Company, Sheila has championed support for African American-owned business initiatives and laid the foundation for a company culture of supplier diversity.

John Carroll’s newly formed E-Sports team, coached by Mr. Lawler ’01 and led by Nick Ciampaglio ’22, Jack McKenzie ’22 and Ben Rosensteel ’22, recently finished their first season of competition as a finalist in the E-Sports Rocket League with a record of 24 –7 after posting an undefeated regular season record of 20 – 0.

The Peace, Justice and Moral Courage committee, chaired by Assistant Principal Danica Attanasio ’97 and English faculty member Mrs. Tara Milburn, is charged with upholding a leadership culture of diversity, equity and inclusion aligned with the mission of the school.

In partnership with student leadership, the PJMC Committee implemented new initiatives this school year while also planning for the future. School-wide activities from Black History Month included a presentation by storyteller Janice Curtis Greene and a Creative Project Showcase for students to share their talents and respond by whatever means of artistic expression they wanted. Additionally, members of the Black Student Union created a useful document of resources for each department to utilize throughout Black History Month.

In addition to our celebration of Black History Month, we celebrated the beginning of the Year of the Ox with our international students on Lunar New Year. At “Connections” press time, plans are underway to celebrate Women’s History Month in March and for the BSU to interview Alumni Advisory Board member Kira Sconion ’95 in April.

Look for updates in future issues on the expansion of the Junior Year Experience to include a class trip to a museum and more speakers on campus, expansion of the Exploration of Human Rights course and additional courses that support a culture of diversity, equity and inclusion.

The students in JC’s College Prep Dance Program have been hard at work throughout the school year. After months of preparation and dedication, and after some weather-related delays, they brought “Nutcracker Moments” to John Carroll’s stage in February. Currently they are working on a production of “Peter Pan,” and we will be sure to share photos from that performance in an upcoming issue.

Immanuel Quickley ’18 Selected 25th in NBA Draft

As a fifth grader, Immanuel Quickley ’18 would say that when he grew up, he wanted to play in the NBA or be an eye doctor. A decade of hard work and dedication later, Immanuel’s picture dominated billboards outside of Manhattan’s Madison Square Garden after being selected 25th pick in the first round of the NBA Draft, landing with the New York Knicks. As of press time, the “New York Post” reported that Quickley ranks fifth among NBA rookies in scoring average, but first in player efficiency rating (PER), which measures per-minute productivity of a player.

Madison Brookshire ’24 On October 20, one of our newest Patriots, Madison Brookshire ’24, was called home to be with our heavenly Father after suffering an unexpected medical emergency. On October 26, the John Carroll community gathered together at Gerry Gray Stadium for a school-wide Remembrance Service, where Director of Mission & Ministry Mr. Zac Ufnar shared the following among his remarks: “Maddie made her mark at John Carroll even before starting her freshmen year. After Maddie’s interview for admission to John Carroll, the interviewer commented on her interview form, saying she was ‘already a Patriot at heart.’ She was so excited to be part of the school that her mother and uncles had also attended as students.

Maddie truly understood the gift of friendship. In just a short time at John Carroll, she was able to make special connections with new friends, even through a computer screen. In class, Maddie never held back her enthusiasm for learning. Her Biology teacher, Mr. Grzanna, commented that ‘Maddie’s character always shined through, even at a distance. Every time we would meet for class, Maddie would light up the meeting. She was energetic, maintained a positive attitude and was always eager to learn.’

Maddie was a loving sister and daughter. Her mother, Laura, a pediatrician, recently took on an extra weekend shift. Maddie happily took care of her three little brothers while her father, Brandon, drove her mother to work in Hagerstown. On the last Sunday before she was taken to the hospital, Brandon and Laura returned home to discover that Maddie had made her brothers homemade chicken noodle soup for dinner. The boys were bathed and tucked into bed. Maddie had also cleaned the house and had done her mother’s laundry so she wouldn’t have to worry about it during the week. Laura and Brandon will tell you that this is who Maddie was: kindhearted, giving, loving, always taking care of others.

Maddie was the star in so many of our lives and it’s the memory of her that will shine on.”

In one of her health class journal entries, Maddie was asked to name a favorite song. Her choice was ‘Yellow’ by Coldplay, a song from her childhood that reminded her of driving in the car with her father. The first two lines are ‘Look at the stars, look how they shine for you.’ Maddie was the star in so many of our lives and it’s the memory of her that will shine on.”

Our hearts are with the Brookshire family, including Maddie’s mother, Laura (Wienholt) Brookshire ’98; her father, Brandon; and her three brothers, Andrew, Austin and Eli. 28

On January 27, a small group of Madison’s family and friends once again gathered on campus to plant and dedicate a tree in her memory.

Mr. Ed Miller, Faculty & Coach Beloved John Carroll teacher and coach Mr. Ed Miller passed away on January 11, 2021.

As a Russian language teacher and leader of pioneering student exchanges between the United States and the former Soviet Union, Mr. Miller opened the eyes of his students to the world beyond our walls. And although he coached several sports through the years, he is perhaps best known for founding the lacrosse program at Loyola Blakefield before coming to John Carroll, where he made an indelible mark on the Patriot program.

Mr. Miller’s commitment to his students and athletes followed them long after they had received their diplomas. It was not uncommon for alumni to receive handwritten letters from him or for former lacrosse players to receive personal calls inviting them to that year’s Old Timer’s Lacrosse Game.

It was that belief in the power of connection that drove Mr. Miller, even as his career led him out of the classroom. It took the form of countless hours spent in the dormitory with international students, providing them with a grandfatherly figure while they were far from their own homes, and passing down his love of fishing.

Most recently, in his position as Archivist and Special Assistant to President DiBiagio, he ensured that current and future Patriots would be able to learn about the history and traditions that set John Carroll apart. Although he is gone, we are blessed and grateful that Mr. Miller’s legacy will continue at John Carroll. Mr. Miller is survived by his wife, Billie; children Gretchen ’81, Amy ’83, Hank, and Heidi ’88; and grandchildren.

The Honorable Rose Mary Hatem Bonsack, M.D., Trustee Emeritus Trustee Emeritus Dr. Rose Mary Hatem Bonsack passed away on September 27, 2020.

The mother and grandmother of 10 John Carroll alumni, Dr. Bonsack’s involvement with JC lasted long after their graduations. She served on the Board of Trustees from 1978 – 1987, including a term as Chairperson from 1980 – 1985. In 2012, John Carroll appointed Dr. Bonsack Trustee Emeritus, an honor shared by a small group of key contributors who were instrumental in shaping our school.

The list of professional achievements that accompanied Dr. Bonsack’s career is nothing short of remarkable. The first female president of the Maryland Academy of Family Physicians, her work as a physician garnered her recognition from the U.S. Army, the University of Maryland and her alma mater, Washington College, where she was awarded the Alumni Citation for Medicine and Public Service. Dr. Bonsack was elected to the Maryland House of Delegates in 1991 where she served until 1999.

Despite her many accomplishments as a physician and public servant, Dr. Bonsack was most passionate about her family and time spent with them. Her formidable legacy is best described in her own words. She believed that she was simply “a woman proving that devotion to family, hard work and the love of mankind are more than just catchy phrases.”

The thoughts and prayers of the John Carroll community are with the Bonsack family at this time, including Jeanette Bonsack Beard ’76, Karen Bonsack ’77, Tom Bonsack ’78, James Bonsack ’89, Olivia Beard ’11, Adam Beard ’14, Andrew Beard ’14, Daniel Bonsack ’16 and Lionel Owona ’14. Dr. Bonsack was predeceased by her son, David Bonsack ’82.

Elizabeth “Betty” Walker Elizabeth “Betty” Walker was a long-time parent volunteer from 1978 – 1987. Betty served as president of the Home School Association, organized and planned for the school’s major fundraiser, the Country Fair, as well as bull roasts, fashion shows, and auctions. In addition, she was a regular volunteer in the Nurse’s Office and Language Lab. After 11 years of service to the school, Betty was recognized with the Volunteer of the Year award.
