As you read through the pages, you will be motivated and inspired by examples of perseverance, achievement and generosity. You will also see the character and commitment of a community strong in faith, values and education. We are all connected through our convergence of interest in the future of our students and our school. Despite the adversity and significant challenges

From changes to the way students are learning to an evolution of the spaces in which they are doing so, the landscape of education at John Carroll is rapidly shifting to leverage new and exciting opportunities.

T H E G R E AT P I V O T When the new coronavirus exploded on to the scene in early 2020, the day-to-day world as we knew it was upended almost overnight, leaving all of us to figure out the “new normal” during this “great pivot”— just two of the many new phrases, along with “social distancing” and “flattening the curve,” that would saturate our vocabulary. Thanks to technology already in place, The John Carroll School was positioned to manage this pivot seamlessly. Using existing online learning platforms and the school’s one-to-one laptop program, the faculty, staff and students were able to remain in daily contact to ensure the high caliber of education continued without interruption. As Principal Tom Durkin described it, “We closed school on Friday, March 13, and we shifted to distance learning on Monday, March 16. I have come to realize that I work with angels. With two and a half hours of professional development under their belts, our teachers, without missing a beat, continued to provide a John Carroll education for all our students…It takes a group of special people who passionately care about their students, who passionately care about their subject matters and job responsibilities, and who passionately care about their co-workers to perform this miraculous pivot. Yes, I am blessed because I work with angels at The John Carroll School.”

The decision ultimately included a combination of synchronous and asynchronous learning, and each teacher got creative with how he or she implemented this in the new platform. Mrs. Kelly Roiy, Program Director for the St. Joseph Program says, “The magic of teaching happens in the classroom, and on Day 1 of distance learning, I felt like a rookie teacher nervously awaiting my students, hoping to recreate some of that same magic through a computer screen.” Dr. Julie Baker, Science Department Chair and current parent, echoes this sentiment: “The first week of online learning at home was to me somewhat like my first year of teaching — trying to set up a new system to organize my work… and learning new ways to present material and get students involved with a lesson.” Faculty and students quickly adapted, however, proving that they could work within any situation that arose. The a cappella group Bella Voce virtually created beautiful harmonies, our College Preparatory Dance Program students performed in their backyards, The Patriot staff and students worked diligently to compile an informative online paper for our community, our artists created at home, and experiments and thoughtful discussions took place in every class. Learning continued.

As an institution, The John Carroll School had to decide how that would work. Would it be synchronous, asynchronous or a combination of the two? How would grading work? Would AP exams still occur? There were more questions than there were answers, and the situation changed seemingly daily.

The school’s Facilities team had anything but a quiet summer, as they worked diligently to make numerous upgrades to support the Reopening Plan, from installing hand sanitizer stations, signage, plexiglass partitions and floor markers to updating the Health Suite, removing desks and rearranging seating to accommodate safe physical distancing. Dr. Toni Ungaretti P’89 G’22 To further enhance distance learning, John Carroll brought in an expert in the subject area, former Trustee Dr. Toni Ungaretti P’89 G’22, as the school’s Distance Learning Advisor. A successful and highly-respected educator, Dr. Ungaretti is an assistant professor in the Johns Hopkins School of Education where she has implemented the Master of Education for the Health Professions program. Previously, she served as the assistant dean for the Office of Learning at the Johns Hopkins Carey Business School, as associate dean and co-director of the Division of Business and Undergraduate Studies in the School of Professional Studies in Business and Education, and as chair of the Department of Teacher Development and Leadership. She developed the Master of Science in Math Science Education, designed the Master of Arts in Teaching (MAT) program, and established some of the first professional development schools in the nation. Her extensive experience will be invaluable in establishing distance learning practices that translate to online courses our students are certain to take in college and as they go on to enter the workforce, preparing them to be successful in this model for years to come.

R E N O VAT I N G S P A C E S F O R T O M O R R O W While distance learning is sure to remain in some way moving forward, at its heart John Carroll is a community, and that community needs a place to call home. As excited as students are to physically return to the school they love, it’s even more exciting to welcome them back to a campus that is even better than when they left! While summer is always a time to make improvements to the school buildings and grounds, the unexpected opportunity of a building that was vacant for an extended period, coupled with the generosity of many loyal supporters, afforded additional opportunities to take on more large-scale and significant projects in the summer of 2020. Thanks to this, students returned to find notable enhancements, including: 1

A fully renovated and accessible Courtyard, located at the center of our school as part of the intent of the school’s original architects, who wanted to ensure that John Carroll students saw beauty and nature every day. Renovations included removal of deteriorating asphalt which was replaced with gorgeous bluestone, updated landscaping, and the addition of a permanent grill station to facilitate courtyard cookouts and gatherings. A new and improved Learning Commons that reflects the school’s college preparatory focus and mirrors spaces on college campuses by providing students with individual and collaborative work stations, comfortable space for relaxation and a stunning view of the outside Courtyard. An updated multi-purpose Brown Room, featuring new manufactured wood floors which add aesthetic appeal, durability and easy maintenance. This updated room is used daily by our faculty, students, prospective families and guests.

New windows throughout the second floor, as part of a three-year plan to replace all the windows in the school. Air conditioning in the Performing Arts hallway, Band Room and Chorus Room, by generous donation from the John Carroll Parent Association.

A newly renovated and designated “Innovation Center,” comprised of the former STEAM Laboratory and the adjacent classroom which was made into one larger room to house our STEAM Academy, Computing Academy, Robotics, Artificial Intelligence and more.

Looking ahead, additional spaces are scheduled for updates including the Science Wing and baseball field. W H AT D O E S T H E F U T U R E H O L D ? The pandemic has forced us all to adjust and to analyze the efficacy of our current landscape. As a result, our students are poised and prepared for their future in college and in the workforce. Assistant Principal Jake Hollin ’92 relays, “Now, as we look towards the future, we are looking for new ways to continue to engage our students and challenge them to be part of discovering and building the future…We are dedicated to providing learning opportunities in a safe and supportive environment...While these are unprecedented and often uncertain times, I am confident in sharing that the heart of our community remains strong. Now more than ever, it is a great time to be a Patriot as we march into the future together and prepare tomorrow’s leaders today.” Mrs. Courtney Westermeyer P’22 is excited to see the newly renovated spaces be utilized, stating, “The leadership of the school continues to show commitment and vision to provide the best opportunity and environment for our kids, even during the most challenging times. We are so excited to support the many changes JC is making to modernize and functionalize several key areas of the school. We know these improvements will offer the students and teachers the tools for great success! Our family feels blessed to be part of the JC community.” As we look forward with anticipation to the time when we can all reenter the building and be physically together, we take solace in our deep bond as a Patriot community. Reflecting on this, Mrs. Roiy states, “The solidarity I feel for being part of the John Carroll school community is immense. COVID-19 has woven a universal thread through our hearts; everyone, in one way or another, has been affected. Together we are moving forward, never losing heart or hope. I have faith that we will come out of this stronger, wiser, and kinder than before. And when we all walk the halls of JC again, my eyes will fill with tears, but this time with joy.” JOHNCARROLL.ORG

Farewell, Class of 2020! While the end of their John Carroll career was arguably the most unique one in our history, the Class of 2020 transitioned to alumni with grace and strength as a class. Even with their school year cut short, they still contributed a combined 16,954 service hours and 54% took one or more AP courses. We were able to celebrate their great accomplishments through a virtual awards ceremony, giving recognition to this well-deserving class. Senior Retreat happened online, and our graduates heard the wise words from Dean of Students Mr. Sean Ireton, “Listen to your heart. Use common sense. Trust yourself, but always allow room to grow and change your mind. You are a work in progress. It’s not about the things that you want to have, but what you want to give.”

Administration visited every senior at home, checking in on them (socially distanced, of course!) and delivering their caps and gowns, yearbooks and senior banners. The Alumni Association followed up by delivering a special gift to each senior. Ultimately, we were able to host an outdoor, socially distanced graduation and officially celebrate the class of 2020, to the delight of 152 Patriot families. We are so proud of our graduates who are now attending 83 colleges in 25 different states, and we cannot wait to hear about their next adventures!

As captain of the Forensics Team, Katie has brought home numerous gold and silver medals and earned a place in three National Tournaments — a first for JC! Katie was founder and president of JC’s Friends R Family club dedicated to raising awareness for mental health, and served as a Peer Minister, Peer Tutor and member of the Patriot Hospitality Group. Katie was named an Archdiocese of Baltimore Distinctive Scholar and National Merit Scholar and earned membership in the National Honor Society, National Art Honor Society, Spanish Honor Society and Archbishop John Carroll Service Honor Society. Katie will attend Washington & Lee University. Hailing from Nairobi, Kenya, Michael served as a mentor to fellow international students and helped prospective students and their families to feel at home at John Carroll as a member of the Patriot Hospitality Group. Michael was also a leader on campus, serving as Senior Class Vice President, Co-President of the Romero Service Club and as a member of the Archbishop John Carroll Service Honor Society. An All-Conference runner for the Patriots, Michael plans to join the Cross Country and Track and Field teams when he arrives at Mount St. Mary’s University.

I want to shift my attention from the uncertainty of the future to the comfort of the warming memories I’ve acquired from the past four years. My John Carroll experience was not tarnished by this pandemic but made even more rich. John Carroll's First MotherDaughter Valedictorians Shelly Ritondo, Valedictorian, Class of 1985 and her daughter, Katie Yurechko, Valedictorian, Class of 2020 Shelly Ritondo, Ph.D. and her daughter, Katie Yurechko, are the first mother-daughter duo to both be named valedictorian of their respective classes. Both were actively involved during their time at John Carroll, dedicating hours not only to their studies but also to service, extracurricular activities and lifelong friendships. Shelly encourages all Patriots to “get fully engaged” during their time at John Carroll, a sentiment that Katie took to heart and echoes, saying, “Try things you never thought you would, and do everything with humility and compassion. Coupled with the opportunities available to you at John Carroll, that will prepare you to be exactly what the world needs: the very best version of yourself.” Proud of the legacy of John Carroll, Shelly says, “John Carroll is a great school that keeps getting better. We are honored to be part of a legacy that adds educated Catholics to the population of this troubled world.” Katie adds, “My family and I will forever hold John Carroll close to our hearts. 1 A R L I N G T O N C E M E T E R Y V I S I T | Seniors continued their Holocaust studies during a class trip to the Holocaust Memorial Museum in Washington, D.C. They also visited Arlington Cemetery, where they got the chance to see the Changing of the Guard, a very moving ceremony. 2 H A R F O R D C O U N T Y ’ S B E S T | The John Carroll School was voted Harford County’s Best Private School AGAIN for 2019! We could not have earned this honor without our families, faculty and staff who make the JC community so special! A huge thank you to everyone who took the time to vote for us. We are blessed to have such an incredible Patriot family! 3 COLLEGE BOARD’S AP COMPUTER SCIENCE FEMALE DIVERSITY AWARD John Carroll has earned the College Board’s AP Computer Science Female Diversity Award for attaining female student representation in AP Computer Science Principles (CSP) in 2019! John Carroll is one of only 639 schools to be recognized for achieving this important result in AP CSP.

This honor acknowledges the outstanding work the school is doing to engage more female students in computer science. 4 J U N I O R R I N G D AY | The Junior class received their rings on March 11, as the first executive orders from the governor were announced. While the ceremony could only include the juniors themselves, due to the new restrictions, parents were able to tune in and view it live, the first of many such events. 5 M O R N I N G S TA R P O W W O W 2 0 T H A N N I V E R S A R Y | Then-Harford County Director of Administration Billy Boniface ’82 and former County Council President Dick Slutzky were on hand at the Morning Star Pow Wow to present John Carroll with a proclamation celebrating the pow wow’s twentieth anniversary. The Morning Star Pow Wow, organized by long-time faculty member Mr. Gary Scholl, is held annually to raise awareness of Native American culture and benefit St. Labre Indian School in Ashland, Montana.

Spotlight On: The Peace, Justice & Moral Courage Committee The Peace, Justice & Moral Courage Committee, originally established in 2014 as the Diversity Committee, is comprised of faculty and staff members working to fulfill its mission to strengthen the diversity of the student body, faculty and staff; to create an anti-racist community that does not simply tolerate and respect differences, but understands and celebrates them; and to develop faculty capabilities and opportunities to deliver culturally relevant curricula.

The influence of this committee goes beyond the classroom and is the catalyst for change, so that we continue to work towards a more equitable and inclusive institution rooted in moral courage. Born out of the passion of this committee, The John Carroll School Board of Trustees presented the inaugural Andrew P. Klein Memorial Peace & Justice Grant, funded through the generosity of the Black and Gold Gala attendees who helped establish it, to four faculty members: Mrs. Louise Géczy, Mrs. Meghan Doyle, Mr. Gary Scholl and Mr. Darrion Siler ’01. The grant will be used to plan and develop a new course they will co-teach called “Exploration of Human Rights, Genocide and the Pursuit of Justice.” Building on the legacy of Andy Klein ’71 and his passion and commitment to tolerance, peace and social justice, students enrolled in the class will examine the Holocaust and other genocides using history, literature, art, music and faith-based reflections. N E W D E PA R T M E N T C H A I R S Veteran educators Matthew Blair, Rodney Johnson and Robert Torres have been selected to lead the English, Social Studies and Mathematics departments, respectively. Each are longtime members of the John Carroll faculty with a wealth of experience in the classroom. Mr. Blair (M.A., Catholic University of America) brings 26 years in secondary and higher education experience to his post as English department chair. Since joining the John Carroll faculty in 1999, he has held a number of leadership roles, including serving as Faculty Executive Committee chairperson and Faculty Representative to the Board of Trustees. Mr. Blair teaches 10th and 11th grade English at both the College Preparatory and Honors levels. In addition to his work in the classroom, Mr. Blair has also led Patriots on the field and in the gym during a 20-year stint as a coach in the Boys Lacrosse and Volleyball programs. In his 26th year as an educator, Mr. Johnson (M.A., Loyola University of Maryland) takes the helm of the Social Studies department after teaching a wide variety of courses, including AP European History, US Government, Economics, World Geography and Business Law. Mr. Johnson has also held a number of coaching positions at John Carroll, including his current role on the Boys Soccer staff, and served for many years as the moderator for the Student Government Association.

Mr. Torres (B.A., University of Maryland Baltimore County) takes the reins of John Carroll’s Mathematics department. During his 19 years at John Carroll, in addition to teaching courses including Algebra, Trigonometry, and Statistics, he has had a long and successful tenure coaching both boys and girls Cross Country and Track and Field.

Once a Patriot, Always a Patriot With a combined 157 years of service to The John Carroll School, we offer gratitude and a fond farewell to the following faculty members who are retiring this year, after impacting thousands of lives. We will miss you and are so grateful for all you have done for John Carroll. In 1972, Mr. George Appleby taught his first math class at John Carroll, and in 2020, he finished his storied career after 48 years as an educator. He served as Math Department Chair for 35 years, Senior Class Moderator for 28 years, Director of Scheduling for 30 years and, of course, videographer for the Patriot football team for 46 years. Famous for his Mr. Potato Head collection, Mr. Appleby has been a pillar at John Carroll, dedicating his life to this institution. Thank you, Mr. Appleby, and enjoy retirement! The halls of John Carroll will not be the same without Mr. Mike Gaudreau ’70! Of the school’s 56 year history, Mr. Gaudreau has been present for 50 of them — four as a student and 46 as an educator! Mr. Gaudreau opened a world of art and beauty to thousands of students. We are excited to see what he will do in his next chapter, and the impact he will continue to have helping the world to see the beauty that he sees every day. Don’t worry, though, Mr. Gaudreau has assured us he will be back to retell the iconic story of the John Carroll ring to the class of 2022!

Mrs. Regina Ferry jumped in to teach mid-year in 1990 and has been a staple of the World Languages department ever since. She has taught all levels of French as well as Spanish. And who could forget her delicious crepes? Mrs. Ferry has been committed to the French exchange program and has hosted various exchange teachers over the years. Many students have been impacted by this amazing program.

Mr. John Low is retiring ... again! Mr. Low retired after a decade of teaching at JC in 2009, but missed it so much, he decided to come back part time in 2012, teaching Biology and Zoology. Mr. Low served as Science Department Chair for five years and, in addition to his classes, he coached outdoor track for ten seasons. Additionally, he tended to our campus greenhouse and could often be found among the flora there. Mr. Low is known for his kindness and humor, and his passion for science is evident to all of his students and his department.

After 25 years, Mrs. Bev Markel is retiring from a great career teaching Math. Mrs. Markel has served our community as a mentor teacher and Math Department Chair and has also worked with our Respect Life Club and the Technology Committee. A past parent as well, Mrs. Markel shared that she’ll miss all the friendships and support she has experienced through her many years at John Carroll.

Dr. Julie Baker was named the 2020 Educator of the Year! Dr. Baker serves as chair of the Science Department, moderator of the Chemathon and Envirothon teams and is a dedicated Advisor. Thank you, Dr. Baker, for all that you do for your students, your colleagues and our community! You serve as a wonderful example of what it means to be a Patriot. This year’s recipient of the Ann M. Drummey Lifetime Service Award is Mr. Tom Vierheller! This award recognizes faculty and staff who have made significant contributions to the John Carroll community through dedicated service. For several years, Mr. Vierheller and his wife, Donna ’78, have led service learning trips in partnership with Cambiando Vidas, an organization dedicated to providing homes for families in the Dominican Republic. Thank you, Mr. Vierheller, for all that you do! Katie Yurechko ’20 and Mrs. Teresa Pleiss ’04 were each honored recently at the William J. Sacco Critical Thinking Foundation’s annual awards banquet. The foundation recognizes seniors who excel in math and math educators who display dedication to bettering their students in their studies. Congratulations, Katie and Mrs. Pleiss! Mr. Sean Ireton was selected as a University of Chicago Outstanding Educator! This is an honor bestowed upon an educator who goes beyond teaching and leaves a lifelong impression. Mr. Ireton was nominated by Helen Lortie ’20.

Every Patriot Has a Story 1 Thirteen John Carroll students participated in the Johns Hopkins University Model UN Conference. Each delegate served on a committee debating, delivering speeches, negotiating and drafting resolutions. Leo Hojnowski ’20 secured the title of “Outstanding Delegate” for his performance at the conference. The Sister Kathleen Brabson, SSJ Service Award recognizes an underclassman for his or her commitment to educational service. A Sister of St. Joseph for over 50 years, Sister Kathleen worked tirelessly for excellence in Catholic education, including spending nine years on The John Carroll School Board of Trustees and Catholic Mission Committee. The inaugural winner of this award is Emily Nelson ’23. Congratulations, Emily! 2 After receiving a request from the principal at St. Mary’s High School in Annapolis, STEAM Program Coordinator and Computer Science Department Chair Mike Monaghan agreed to utilize John Carroll’s 3D printers to make parts of protective masks and respirators. Mr. Monaghan printed and shipped components to Eclipse Group who assembled and delivered the masks to Anne Arundel Medical Center and other medical facilities. In all, JC contributed 486 mask shells to the effort, and the school’s two 3D printers logged 2,743 print hours from April through June. 3 Suoyi Feng ’21 recently published an original research paper in the peer-reviewed Journal of Inflammation Research titled, “Therapeutic Effect of C-C Chemokine Receptor Type 1 (CCR1) Antagonist BX471 on Allergic Rhinitis.” Biology teacher Mr. Mark Grzanna mentored Suoyi for this extensive project and is credited as a co-author. The link to the article and a video abstract is available on the News section of the John Carroll website. Suoyi also placed second in the 2020 Maryland BioGENEius Challenge with this same project. Congratulations, Suoyi! 4 Members of the student-led service organization VolunTeen have had a busy year, from collecting needed supplies for the young women transitioning out of foster care at Crossroads Transitional Living to producing a video of hope to encourage senior citizens isolated at nursing homes, medical personnel and others impacted by the pandemic. The group, which is comprised of local high school students, includes President Drew Evans ’23, who received an award from the District Governor of the Lions Club for his dedication to this organization, Vice President Ryan Skandalis ’23 and Secretary Katie Yurechko ’20, as well as Alex Fuller ’23, Noah Miller ’23, Jayson Polesovsky ’23, Max Vaughan ’23 and Greg Temple ’23. 5 Cousins Donnie Waitt ’23 and Gabriella Steck ’23 started a GoFundMe page to raise money to assist families who were out of work due to COVID-19, exceeding their goal of $1,000 and using the funds to provide grocery store gift cards to those in need. Congratulations to Emma Ritter ’20 and Garrett “Happy” Phillips ’20 for their selection as John Carroll’s Al Cesky Scholarship nominees.

6 Grace Madigan ’21 and her mom, Sandra, have sewn and donated almost 100 masks to family, friends and essential workers in need. 7 John Carroll’s Robotics Team participated in the VEX Robotics Virtual World Tournament and came away ranked third in the world in programming and 18th in the world overall. Congratulations to these dedicated Patriots!

8 Shorts Lawncare owners Brett ’20 and Austin Shorts ’22, along with their younger sister Sara, donated a portion of their April profits to the John Carroll Student Emergency Fund. For her Senior Project, Emma Ritter ’20 took on the challenge of planning and hosting the annual Special Needs Prom. Guests said “Aloha to Spring” and danced the night away with friends old and new. Thank you, Emma, for continuing what has become a John Carroll tradition! Tyler Rosso ’20 has always wanted to find a way to say thank you to the medical staff who helped him to recover from severe burns as a child, so for his senior project he collected donations and made activity bags for children being treated at Johns Hopkins Children’s Center. Alexis Loder ’20, Helen Lortie ’20 and Katie Yurechko ’20 were recognized as Harford County House Delegation Scholars, an honor earned by students who are among the top scholars in the county. We are very proud of all you have achieved as Patriots!

Brian Thompson ’20 signed on as a member of RandolphMacon ESports, which competes in the National Association of Collegiate eSports. 9 Sarah Nelson ’21 earned her Girl Scout Gold Award on July 3, 2020, by working with The Johns Hopkins Children’s Medical Center. Sarah created a visual binder and flash drive with 458 original drawings that can be reproduced as needed, helping the environment by reducing paper waste from disposed, partially-used coloring books. Drawings were completed on John Carroll’s Middle School Arts Night.

1 1 Ms. Casey Knell ’11 and the JC Band and Orchestra were joined by over 20 prospective students for Band & String Day! Kristen Ingold ’20, Justin Kim ’20 and Cicily Zhou ’20 represented John Carroll at The Walters Museum AIMS Student Art Show where their artwork was viewed and appreciated by thousands of visitors while it was on display. 2 Brenna Patzer ’20 moved from the stage to the director’s chair to bring us a moving production of “The Diary of Anne Frank” for her senior project. Thank you, Brenna, for bringing this powerful story to life.

“The Patriot” staff pulled off something truly remarkable, putting together a special COVID-19 issue of the John Carroll student newspaper in just two weeks, when typical turnaround time for a print issue is four to six weeks. During the last 40 minutes they had together in class, the students planned and gathered information for stories for this special digital-only issue. Alex Hau ’20, Kate Gromacki ’20 and Emma Balint ’20 (Chief Editors) and Belle Wilson ’22 (Managing Editor) led the charge for this effort. Ryan was also the recipient of the Jim Chrismer Excellence in US History Award, named for long-time John Carroll teacher Mr. James E. Chrismer and awarded annually to a junior who demonstrates interest and excellence in the study of U.S. History. We are proud of Kai Thomas ’21 who wrote and recorded a rap in response to the senseless killing of George Floyd, which was widely shared on social media.

2 Congratulations to Nick Singelakis ’23 who ran two very fast races in the mile (4:33) and 2 mile (10:09)! His mile time qualified him for the Indoor Track Nationals in NY in March.

From the Archives 50 YEARS AGO In the spring of 1970, the first John Carroll Country Fair was held! At the first Home School Association meeting of that year, Fr. Riepe told HSA president Jack Hunter that he wanted a country fair… and the rest is history. Jack was the first chair of a committee that included then-parents (all of whom went on to become proud Patriot grandparents!) Joan Larney, Tom Murtagh, Bill Richards, Ed Stauch, Al McGann and Tony Meoli. Most will remember participating in, volunteering for and enjoying this weekend-long fair that ran for over 40 years. Now, we welcome our alumni back that same time each year to celebrate Alumni Weekend!

20 YEARS AGO In the fall of 2000, as John Carroll celebrated its 35th anniversary in the year named by Pope John Paul II as both a Jubilee Year and Holy Year, alumni from the class of 1968 were invited back to campus to celebrate the opening liturgy with the school, as the school year started under the theme “Open Wide the Doors.”

1 Congratulations to Carolyn Lambdin ’70, mother of Jennifer Doyle ’93, who has been named President of the Morris A. Mechanic Foundation, Inc. We have witnessed Carolyn’s impact and commitment firsthand at John Carroll, thanks to her service on the leadership board of John Carroll’s Lighting the Way Campaign.

2 In an effort to help members of his community continue to put food on their table, Jerry Pilachowski ’71 started the Little Free Food Pantry in a small tent in front of his home in Red Lion.

4 Before long, that small tent had to be exchanged for a donated shipping container as his neighbors, area businesses and a team of volunteers embraced the “give what you can, take what you need” food pantry.

3 At the second annual Addiction Connections Resource Award Ceremony, The Dresher Foundation was honored with the Joe Ryan Champion for Prevention and Recovery Award, named for fellow Patriot Joe Ryan ’73 in honor of his dedication to creating substance abuse and recovery awareness during his career in law enforcement. We were proud to be on hand to celebrate this family that gives so much to the community and to our school, and many of whom are alumni, including our own Director of Advancement Susan Butcher Roarty ’95.

John Mullen ’74 is semi-retired but still works part time with cancer patients. John served in the Navy after medical school and served as medical officer on a nuclear submarine.

2 In her vital role as Project Lead at Johns Hopkins Medicine, Kathy Appel Sapitowicz ’81 was training doctors on how to use telehealth effectively long before coronavirus came around. She and her team continue to work diligently on ways to enhance telehealth for treating COVID-19 as well as for other healthcare applications.

3 Chris McDonell ’86, President & CEO at McDonell Consulting Group/Sandler Training and award-winning sales, management and leadership trainer and keynote speaker, is

one of 52 individuals chosen for Leadership Maryland and will participate in the professional development program dedicated to building a better Maryland by harnessing the strength of its local business and community leaders.

4 Jenny Block ’88 is a Houston-based author and writer who recently released a new book, “Be That Unicorn: Find your Magic. Live your Truth. Together they collected and delivered 1,375 pounds of non-perishable food items and $900 to the Harford County Community Action Agency Food Bank.

1990s, 2000s & 2010s 1990s 1 “Every effort counts.” That is how Beynon Sports began a recent social media post that included a photo of their new production line churning out much-needed bottles of hand sanitizer. The Maryland-based athletic track and turf field surface company was founded by John T. Beynon, father of Drew ’93 and Jay ’95, and today Drew serves as Chief Operating Officer of the highly successful business.

2 Jeremy Rosendale ’95 recently joined forces with other volunteers to make personal protective equipment (PPE) for staff at Johns Hopkins, as well as first responders and others on the frontlines of the response to COVID-19. In the few hours he spent volunteering, Jeremy became part of an effort which has produced over 50,00 PPE kits to date!

2000s Daniel Egan ’01 is teaching his middle school students at Ridge and Valley Charter School in Blairstown, New Jersey, to practice gratitude, even in trying times. Students have spent time writing letters to first responders, medical personnel and essential workers expressing their thanks for the important work being done by people in those categories.

4 Social Studies teacher and Varsity Baseball Coach Darrion Siler ’01 had the opportunity to go to Russia to coach and present at the International Sports Group Baseball/Russian Baseball Federation Coaches Conference, which conducts coaching

5 Kyle Hoedebecke ’02 received the President’s Volunteer Service Award. The award is given in recognition and appreciation for his commitment to strengthen our nation and communities through volunteer service. Jennie Hart ’02 is a pediatric hematologist/ oncologist at Sinai Hospital where she serves as the clinical director of her division as well as the associate pediatric residency program director.

9 Filmmaker Alesia Etinoff ’10 attributes her start to John Carroll, where she wrote and starred in a feature film she made for her Senior Project called “Scarred.” For her latest project, Alesia wrote and starred in “19 Weeks,” a short film which tells the story of a woman learning to grieve following a miscarriage. Christopher has resumed his position at a financial services firm in the Washington, DC area and now resides in Bethesda, MD. Christopher’s mother (Maureen Bruneau) and sister (Beth Pocalyko) recently opened a men’s boutique store on Main Street, Bel Air. The store is named John’s Men’s Clothing Store, in memory of his brother.

Malik Tyne ’15 was drafted number 24 overall in the Canadian Football League Draft. 11 Jake Dengler ’16 has signed on to play soccer professionally with Loudoun United, an affiliate of D.C. United. Immanuel Quickley ’18 was named SEC Player of the Year before entering the NBA Draft. Donor Spotlight Mark and Karen Lazoff fully embody the meaning of the “all in” Patriot spirit at John Carroll. As parents of Adam ’12 and Ben ’21, Mark and Karen have dedicated over a decade of support to John Carroll through their volunteer efforts, event sponsorships, trusteeship, and support of the Annual Fund. Supporting the Annual Fund’s efforts is important to the Lazoff family. Mark feels “it is our duty as a parent to help where we can whether financially, volunteering or preferably both. We are in this as a team and the school cannot accomplish this alone.” As Chair of the Parent Association, Mark Lazoff has consistently given his time to John Carroll and its students, faculty, and staff to inspire growth and leadership. Having served on multiple committees, Mark is dedicated to growing John Carroll and continuing to support its mission and values in any way possible. Mark and Karen Lazoff are truly inspiring examples of parent involvement at John Carroll. With Mark leading the Parent Association during both of his son’s tenures at John Carroll, the Lazoff’s level of involvement and giving back to JC goes above and beyond. “Attending Parent Association meetings is a great way to meet and talk with the parents and to coordinate our efforts for the PA sponsored events.” The Parent Association is largely a team effort of enthusiastic and devoted members taking an active interest in the academic, social and moral welfare, as well as promoting fundraising endeavors and events of John Carroll. When asked what advice they would give to future parents of John Carroll, Mark and Karen said, “Get involved!
