The Arts at JC Performing | Visual | Literary

In an age where knowledge exists at the end of our fingertips, it is now the ability to analyze, synthesize, ideate and create that is paramount. An increasing awareness of the need to couple the linear thinking left brain of the Information Age with the creative, empathetic right brain to formulate the ultimate symbiosis now pervades. Our children will be the innovators and creators of their future: it is our task to provide them with the tools necessary to work with confidence in this challenge.

Fine Arts Diploma with Distinction Tracks in fine arts, performing arts or literary arts

To encourage students who are outstanding in the fine arts, The John Carroll School created the Fine Arts Diploma with Distinction. Initiated in 2011, successful graduates have been accepted to such prestigious schools as Maryland Institute College of Art, Savannah College of Art and Design, Art Institute of Chicago, and Rochester Institute of Technology. Students who are interested in this track apply for acceptance concurrently with their general John Carroll application. A supplemental submission, including an essay and examples of artistic work exhibiting both desire and proficiency, funnels through a selection committee for evaluation. Acceptance to this track enables access to fine arts courses as freshmen, thereby opening additional opportunities as upperclassmen. This track pertains to visual, performing and literary arts, or a combination thereof. For more information and additional requirements, please see the school website.

Field Trips There is nothing that can reproduce the experience of seeing an artwork in person. In the fall, our fine arts students venture to New York City to visit The Metropolitan Museum of Art, The Guggenheim and The Whitney to fully engage in all eras of art history, from ancient to contemporary. Other trips include the Hirschhorn and the National Gallery of Art in D.C, as well as Frank Lloyd Wright’s Fallingwater in Ohiopyle, PA. We believe that experiencing art outside of the classroom creates an engaging and fun educational experience that encourages a future generation of art enthusiasts, whether or not they continue to work within the arts.
