The Diploma Distinction that Sets You Apart The College Board approved The John Carroll School to offer the AP Capstone Diploma Program starting in the Fall of 2018. John Carroll is the first Catholic School in the state of Maryland to earn this right. The AP Capstone Diploma is a uniquely distinguished program that allows for our best and brightest Patriots to participate in one of the most rigorous academic programs available. The AP Capstone Diploma Program will help students develop critical thinking skills that allow them to think independently, analyze issues from different perspectives, communicate clearly, and conduct independent research. These are exactly the types of skills that they will be expected to utilize in college.
How the AP Capstone Diploma Program Works Students in the AP Capstone Diploma Program are required to take AP Seminar and AP Research as well as any four additional AP courses of their choice. In AP Seminar, students will complete a team project and presentation; write and present an individual, research-based essay; and take an end-of-course exam. In AP Research, students will draft an academic paper, present it and orally defend their research. If students earn a score of three or higher on AP exams for both AP Seminar and AP Research, they will receive the AP Seminar and Research Certificate. Students who score a three or higher on those AP exams as well as the AP exams for four other courses will receive the AP Capstone Diploma. The Archbishop John Carroll Scholarship Program The Place for JC’s Highest Achievers The Archbishop John Carroll Scholarship Program is a four-year exclusive program that is by invitation only. It is designed for students who want to be part of a community of scholars interested in making the most of their experience at John Carroll in preparation for college. Only eighth grade students with a very competitive national composite score in the 90th percentile or above on the High School Placement Test (HSPT) are eligible for this program. As “Carroll Scholars,” students are not only recognized and rewarded for academic success but have the opportunity to take the most rigorous course offerings available through our Advanced Placement Capstone Diploma Program. When students successfully pass the requisite Advanced Placement courses throughout their four years at John Carroll, they will graduate with an additional AP Capstone distinction. This helps our scholars aspire to the top echelons of higher education.
