Lake Boga Flying Boat Museum

Just 14 km south of Swan Hill, Lake Boga’s Flying Boat Museum reveals a hidden chapter of World War II history. Housed in a modern hangar, the museum stands on the site of Australia’s secret No. 1 Flying Boat Repair Depot, where Catalinas and other flying boats from Australian, Dutch, and American forces were repaired between 1942 and 1945. At its peak, around 1,000 personnel were based here.

After the war, the base was decommissioned, and surplus Catalinas were sold to the public for between 100 and 1,000 pounds. Years later, members of the Lake Boga Lions Club led the effort to create the museum, spending a decade dismantling and relocating a Catalina to tell this remarkable story.

Today, visitors can step back to the 1940s, when flying boats were more common on the lake than speedboats are today. The museum is open daily from 9 am to 4 pm.

LAKE TYRRELL

A visit to Lake Tyrrell, just 80 kilometres from Swan Hill, is a must for any nature enthusiast or budding photographer.

Victoria’s largest salt lake, Lake Tyrrell is around 120,000 years old and spans approximately 20,000 hectares. It’s famous for its striking reflective surface, which creates unforgettable photo opportunities, particularly at sunrise and sunset when the sky seems to merge seamlessly with the ground.

The lake is regarded as one of the best places in Australia for stargazing, with its dark, expansive skies offering the perfect setting to take in the Milky Way and the constellations of the southern hemisphere. On clear nights, the stars are brilliantly vivid and can appear to stretch endlessly to the horizon.

Lake Tyrrell is extremely shallow, usually only a few centimetres deep. After rain in winter and spring, water pools across the salt crust, producing the famous mirror effect that attracts photographers from all over the world. During warmer months, the lake often dries to a hard saltpan, and in late summer and early autumn, algae blooms can tint parts of the surface a striking pink.

The best time to visit depends on what you want to see: winter and spring are ideal for reflections after rainfall, while summer and early autumn are the best seasons to witness the unique pink colouring caused by salt-loving algae. Stargazing is spectacular throughout the year, with the clearest skies typically occurring in the cooler months when humidity is lower.

Lake Tyrrell is also home to unique salt-tolerant plant life and a fragile ecosystem that supports a range of birdlife, including banded stilts, rednecked avocets, and gulls.

A short walking trail near the viewing platform allows visitors to explore the salt flats up close and appreciate the textures and colours of the landscape. Visitors will find a viewing platform and an information bay that provide insights into the lake’s natural and cultural significance.

Please remember to drive only on designated roads to help protect this remarkable environment.

FISHING & WATER ACTIVITIES

Swan Hill is a fantastic destination for anyone who loves spending time on the water. The Murray River and nearby lakes create endless opportunities for water sports and fishing adventures all year round.

Lake Boga, located just 15 minutes south of town, is especially popular for waterskiing, wakeboarding, tubing, kayaking, stand-up paddleboarding, and sailing. Its wide, calm waters and open shoreline provide ideal conditions for both beginners and experienced enthusiasts. During summer, Lake Boga comes alive with families and groups enjoying the lake from sunrise to sunset.

Fishing is a big part of the local lifestyle and draws anglers from across Victoria and New South Wales. The Murray River is wellknown for its healthy population of Murray cod, one of Australia’s most iconic native fish, along with golden perch, silver perch, redfin, and yabbies. Many anglers target Murray cod during the warmer months when the fish are most active. Pental Island, Ned’s Corner, and the areas near Locks 7 and 9 are among the most popular fishing spots. These locations offer a mix of riverbank access, boat launching facilities, and quiet stretches where it’s easy to spend hours waiting for a bite.

Lake Boga is also an excellent fishing destination, with plenty of open water and accessible shorelines. Redfin are commonly caught here, along with carp, golden perch, and the occasional Murray cod. The lake has a reputation for producing good catches, especially in the early morning or late afternoon when fish are feeding more actively.

Visitors interested in water sports can also explore other smaller rivers and creeks around the region. The Marraboor (Little Murray) River offers a peaceful setting for kayaking or stand-up paddleboarding, with tree-lined banks and frequent sightings of waterbirds and native wildlife. For those who prefer boating, several boat ramps and launching spots are available along the Murray River and at Lake Boga, making it easy to get out on the water for a day of adventure.

A NSW fishing licence is required to fish in the Murray River, even when you access it from the Victorian side (except for Lake Hume). It’s recommended to check local regulations and seasonal closures before heading out to fish.
