Upon arriving in Albany, you will no doubt feel immersed in history. With its beautiful old buildings and sense of history, the town undoubtedly makes the visitor realise that this town is something special. Albany was the first settlement in Western Australia established 26 December 1826 by Major Edmund Lockyer, and the departure point for the first ANZACs. Travelling around Albany, the visitor will be amazed by its wealth of history, from the Aboriginal influence evident in the area, to the fantastically old hotels, homes and commercial structures. For those who are not interested in history and culture, there are Albany’s famous hidden beaches. Little Beach, said to be the best in Australia, is one of the little beauties. It is located forty minutes from Albany and right next to Two Peoples Bay. After visiting Little Beach, visitors can drive to Waychinicup Gorge for a picnic. If you feel like hiking the Porongorups, viewing the natural blow holes, marvelling at the Wind Farm or simply wish to take up a wine trail, Albany is the perfect place for your base. Most people coming to Albany have heard about this famous area located just 15 minutes south of the town. The scenery is rugged and challenging and one wonders what the first settlers must have thought when they arrived in the area. No doubt they would have been absolutely taken with the mighty Natural Bridge and The Gap, which features a 25 metre sheer drop to the ocean. After sighting these two marvels, drive on to the blow holes, just a few minutes further along the Frenchman Bay Tourist Drive. The walk down to the blow holes from the carpark takes 5 to 10 minutes and, although it is quite steep, the walk is easy. The history here is ancient and stems back some 45 million years when Australia separated from the super continent called Gondwana. Gondwana connected Australia to Antarctica and remnants of those past days still exist with identical rock formations found on Australia's south coast and in the north coast of Antarctica near the Windmill Islands. After the blow holes, move on to Jimmy Newhills Harbour where you will find a small protected harbour named after a fisherman driven into the inlet by a sudden squall.
