TO P 10 T IP S: HOW TO CAP T URE GRE AT HE ADSHOT S

9. MIX IT UP It isn’t nece s s ar y to look straight into the c amera for ever y shot. Tr y a variet y of head and eye positions . You c an also change the c amera’s point of view and shoot from various angle s to add some intere st.

Ever yone want s to look at trac tive in a photograph, but sometime s that’s not what happens when you click the shut ter. How do you help people look fant astic and c apture a great photo? Is there a secret recipe? It’s not as dif f icult as you might think! Just follow a few of the se helpful tips and watch your snapshot s turn into beautiful headshot s .

10. WATC H THE WARDROBE Dif ferent t ype s of por trait s require dif ferent t ype s of clothing , but a proven choice for a por trait photo is a solid color that complement s a per son’s hair, skin tone, and eye s . Avoid busy pat terns , logos , or overpowering color s .

1. MAKE ROOM TO ZOOM If you want to f ill the frame with a pret t y face, don’t get phy sic ally close with your c amera. This close -up dist ance create s an unf lat tering , wide - angle look . Instead, back away from your subjec t and zoom in to f ill the frame. This is a much more f lat tering per spec tive! 2. BOUNCE THE LIGHT Brighten up face s and create a lively c atch light in your subjec t’s eye by using a ref lec tor to bounce the light onto the face. If you don’t have a ref lec tor handy, position your subjec t near a white wall, white t ablecloth, or other ref lec tive sur face.

4. GE T RE AL C apture an authentic moment by giving your subjec t s something to do, then wait for the magic al moment s and be ready with your c amera. 5. C OMP O SE THE SHOT C apture a visually compelling image by using the Rule of Thirds . Think of the scene in your view f inder as a tic - t ac t- toe board and ment ally divide your scene into thirds , then place something of intere st at one or more of the inter sec tions . 6. REL A X Most tension in a por trait photo shows up in t wo place s , facial expre s sions and the hands . To rela x the face use the “puf fer f ish” technique and to loosen up the hands , just shake them out and let them fall naturally. 7. P OWDER UP Male or female, young or old - a shiny face is distrac ting and unf lat tering in a photograph. D on’t be afraid to put a lit tle powder on your subjec t’s face if needed. I keep a few neutral tone s of powder compac t s in my c amera acce s sorie s bag ; they come in handy when someone needs a touch up. 8. THIN DOWN Shoot from slightly above your subjec t to diminish weight in the neck and chin area. Create a slim look by turning your subjec t to the side in a 3/4 pose and have them shif t their weight onto the back foot. Use shadows strategic ally in your image s . Dark shadows appear to recede, while the bright areas of an image move for ward, appearing larger.

JOHN MCMONIGLE Bravo’s Rising Star

The only way John c an continue with his trajec tor y of succe s s is by remaining focused on being “real”. In the midst of shooting for a new Bravo T V serie s , Real Estate War s, launching an innovative sof t ware platform, managing his own media company and selling multi-million dollar e st ate s to VIP client s , the record–breaking A gent opens up about the highs and lows of busine s s , and the thing s that keep him grounded. Written by Valarie Anderson

A complex man of expansive vision, John McMonigle is a walking dichotomy -par t jock , par t daddy, a lit tle Jame s Bond and a lit tle bit farm boy, sophistic ated s ale sman and Sunday school teacher, wildly image conscious but sof t- spoken. He is a brand of Americ an executive that is redef ining what it means to be a succe s s . He is one of the nation’s top per forming re sidential real e st ate agent s c atering to a selec t clientele of billionaire s and inf luencer s that var y in industr y, from spor t s f igure s to celebritie s , industrialist s to t ycoons . He move s in and out of high-net- wor th circle s of exclusivit y with the ease of a blue blood but was born and raised in Americ a’s hear tland, hailing from an Oklahoma farm and tot ally self-made.

It s f ive thir t y in the morning and the sunrise is fading from light pink to that rare, gold-blue that hang s over the stunning area c alled Newpor t Beach. John’s alarm sounds and he rise s from his ins anely neat and st ylish condo with a 180-degree view of the Newpor t Harbor. C of fee is laid out the night before by his bride to-be and a slew of vit amins , are lined up for consumption. He sc ans his Mac for impor t ant, get back now, emails and answer s accordingly. He move s through the quiet to his de sk and opens the most impor t ant read of the day, this is rare time for John, who will not experience this stillne s s ag ain, until he returns way past nightfall to his bed. He opens his Bible and reads for thir t y minute s . It is crucial that he st ar t s his day, ever y day, like this . He conf ide s , “I c an handle all that come s my way in a c alm and thoughtful manner, as long as I have read and studied my bible for a half hour in the morning , I c an handle anything .” It’s a good thing , bec ause the c acophony of his daily life is going to come swif t and boisterously and without pause for the next f if teen hour s and with lit tle timeout or privacy. But before any of that happens , John’s next step is to head over to his private club and work out for the next hour with the st amina of a pro athlete and the determination of pushing himself just a lit tle harder each

John explains his purpose in no uncer t ain terms . “ When I was younger, I was enormously driven to dominate the market, build my wealth and have all of life’s trapping s . At a young age I lived in a $10Million house with second home s , an exotic c ar collec tion and a yacht. I have alway s been a per son of Christian faith, but the lure of wealth was the fruit that one might have

are chomping at the bit to sign up and you c an see immediately the competition for prime neighborhoods is going to be a good problem. John’s smile is as broad as his Scoop logo and he’s an elec tric and grateful host to the meeting . He tells me, “I const antly strive ever y day to be the be st ver sion of my self that I c an be, mind, body and spirit. This involve s relentle s sly pushing and challenging my self and not comparing my self to other s or the competition.”

I meet John at his favorite re st aurant, where he sit s eng aged with his iPhone and checking Inst agram. I ask him, when did you realize your inner power towards succe s s?

Fast for ward to Friday, John is fre sh of f the Pelic an Hill Golf cour se, clad head- to- toe in Prada, where he’s just f inished 18 with client s . I ask him how his g ame went, “Af ter not golf ing for a year I had t wo bogey ’s ,”- of cour se he did, the natural athlete appear s only brief ly bec ause there are people literally waiting in the hallway s , sit ting in conference rooms and the parking lot is get ting st acked with new agent s arriving - all eager to have a face to face with John.

“I fell in love with re sidential real e st ate when I was a teenager. My summer job during college back in Oklahoma was framing house s . We would step on to a fre sh concrete slab, crank up our 80’s music and raise one wall at a time following the architec tural engineering plans . I was f illed with pride and fu lf illment to turn around and see a fully framed house a few weeks later. I remember being on a roof one hot summer day, looking down on the developer pulling up in his Range Rover to inspec t our work , and I decided, right then, I would be like that guy someday. I moved to C alifornia af ter college to become a re sidential developer. When I arrived in C alifornia from Oklahoma, I decided to get my real e st ate license to learn re sidential value s thru brokerage s ale s so that I would be well equipped to st ar t buying vac ant land lot s . It i s then that I fell in love with re sidential real e st ate s ale s .”

It’s the end-of-day and although his schedule is bur sting with busine s s , he addre s se s ever y interac tion with his friendly good manner s and eagle - sharp eye for det ail. He rat tle s of f strategie s to sophistic ated multi-million dollar deals while checking on his propriet ar y, industr y -changing sof t ware. He per sonally answer s c alls with VIP customer s arranging showing s integrating private jet arrangement s and chauf fer driven pick-ups .

My purpose is ver y clear to me. I will use this st age and position of inf lue nce to glorif y God. I encourage all those who work close to me to focus on this s ame principle and have and enjoy a rewarding , joyful and peaceful “Purpose Driven C areer.” This bring s for th a dif ferent approach to each day for me. He is quite anchored in this and it’s the driving principle behind his Neighborhood Scoop Platform, his Top A gent propriet ar y s ale s program, his marketing and media companie s and his real e st ate succe s s . There is no change in tone or re spec t when speaking with VIP ’s or st af fer s . I am amazed with the f luidit y of his abilit y to manage multiple projec t s and st ay focused on alway s the s ame end goal. Ever yone want s a piece of this guy and as I watch him give it freely and in abundance I realize, he immediately get s replenished, phy sic ally, ment ally and f inancially, and t wo- fold. His purpose is t angible. He has mastered the simple concept of love thy neighbor, reap what you sow, and the Golden Rule.

Relying on his spiritualit y and childhood upbringing in the Bible belt c ame natural to John and it forged a new f ire in his being to help his fellow agent s and in an innovative way. John share s that he “ Shows up at the of f ice, with a hear t of gratitude and love for all those I encounter including my competition and even those who are clearly my enemy.” His non- traditional approach to real e st ate has become a new sof t ware platform c alled Neighborhood Scoop. It as signs neighborhoods to specif ic agent s to net work and “ farm” in a geo- t argeted fashion and with loc al busine s s inclusions . It has nation wide applic ations and the smiley - faced logo is indic ative of John’s current st ate of mind. I c atch up with him ag ain in his C orona D el Mar of f ice - a jewel box of glas s and brown leather, a king’s crown loc ation within walking dist ance to the blue Pacif ic. John is holding cour t with 30+ agent s rolling out his f ir st 50 Scoop neighborhoods , and the agent s are intensely eng aged with the sy stem. There is a line of logoed hat s ag ainst the credenza and numerous par ticipant s are thusly topped. John is beaming and his highly customized pre sent ation is power ful. FAKE NE WS, FAKE T RU T H, BU T YOU CAN’T FAKE LOV E

If the car in your dreams is not the car in your garage, we should talk.

60 Minute s did a stor y on Fake News last night. Our TIVO recording only allowed us to watch a por tion of the segment bec ause loc al weather broadc ast s kept interrupting 60 Minute s is suing tornado warning s . If only there were Fake Tornadoe s in Oklahoma.

Yet, what is even more tragic than the public ation of Fake News are the highly educ ated, other wise non- gullible, even Christian people who swallow Fake News as legitimate. And, ye s , this occur s on both side s of the aisle, whether conser vative or liberal. I c ame acros s one such Fake News stor y to day about the exhumation of the body of Vince Foster. Some of my Christian friends shared this Fake News in praise of conser vative Repre sent ative Trey Gowdy, who allegedly petitioned the cour t s to have the body exhumed to prove Foster’s death was ac tually murder and not suicide ; all in an at tempt to smear Bill and Hillar y Clinton. The stor y is false, but it doe sn’t keep the author s of the lie from making money on their web site s . We Christians hand gold to the E g yptians (an allegor y from Exodus) when we spread Fake News . With the advent of intentional untruth spread as “newswor thy fac t,” it would be an appropriate time to remind us who follow Je sus that we are to be known for our love and truth - in that order. The Royal C ommandment is love (see Jame s 2:8). People will know I am a follower of Christ by my love, not my truth (see John 13:35). The love I show is more impor t ant than truth I know, bec ause in realit y my Truth is a Per son, and He tells me to love you as He love s me. I may tell you I love you, but if I don’t show you I love you, then I’m faking love. The good news about true love is that fac t checking it is easy for me. Before I condemn those who pas s on Fake News as gospel truth, I ought to examine to see if I am at tempting to hoodwink you with my fake love. I think the lat ter is wor se bec ause it of ten involve s self-delusion. AGENT INC . ( AI): WHAT PERSONAL QUALITIES OR PERSONALIT Y TR AITS MAKE FOR A GOOD AGENT?

An Inside View from Outside the Industry

DAVID DUNN A hig h ly re sp e c ted spo r t s age nt sh a re s in sig h t s o n h i s wo rk , clien t s , in sp irati o n s , pu rpo s e and h ow h e ma int a i ns b a l a nce, p ro fe s sion a l ly an d pe r s o n a l ly By David Laurell

DD: The abilit y to work hard, to be diligent and det ailed about what you do – to have a real work ethic. Being a spor t s agent is not as f lashy or glamorous as one might think . It is a c areer in which our succe s se s are behind- the - scene s and come through the work we do for other people. Whether it is in recruiting , negotiating contrac t s , marketing , or just working with our client s on a daily basis with whatever per sonal or profe s sional situations arise, empathy is also an impor t ant qualit y. You need to be truly empathetic, bec ause you need to be able to see the world through someone else’s eye s and deal with cer t ain thing s without put ting your own spin on how you think thing s should be. Creativit y is also what cer t ainly separate s a good agent from a great one. And then there is pas sion, which is , perhaps , the most impor t ant qualit y. The most telling trait that I look for in people is their pas sion. In the busine s s I’m in, I deal with guy s who are up ag ainst extreme competition and odds , so that means both they, as well as we who repre sent them, have to really have the burning pas sion to make it. No mat ter what profe s sion, you have to have a pas sion for what you do to succeed. Ai: Let’s also look at it from the client’s per spec tive. What qualitie s and trait s make for a good client ? DD: Being able to properly communic ate their de sire s to their agent and then having a handle on per spec tive. Thos e thing s are ver y impor t ant. A lot of young guy s lack per spec tive, bec ause they have been coddled for so long and, also, just bec ause they are so young . But just as with an agent’s trait s , it really boils down to having pas sion and a strong work ethic . Having balance is also impor t ant. The se young guy s have to learn to

David Dunn, the CEO of Athlete s Fir st, st ands out in the world of profe s sional football as one of the most prominent, prolif ic, ef fec tive and re spec ted agent s and negotiato r s in the industr y. A true powerhouse when it come s to repre sent ation, Dunn has negotiated more National Football League contrac t s than any other agent, and his negotiating ef for t s have re sulted in score s of record-breaking deals . Having negotiated some of the large st contrac t s in the histor y of the g ame for NFL great s including Drew Bledsoe, C ar son Palmer and Aaron Roger s , he and his agency also repre sent such gridiron st ar s as Mark S anchez, Ray Lewis , We s Welker and Kyle Or ton. A Phi Bet a Kappa graduate of UCL A who went on to be an Order of the C oif member at Hasting s C ollege of L aw, Dunn has re pre sented athlete s for over 25 year s . Recognized as a pioneer in the spor t s agency busine s s , his ef fec tive and re spec ted negotiation st yle has re sulted in the large st head coach, coordinator, and pos ition coach deals in the histor y of the NFL. His per s istence and experience have also seen him repre sent the league’s highe st-paid s afet y, linebacker, defensive lineman, of fensive lineman, running back , fullback , tig ht end, cornerback and kicker, eleven Pro Football Hall of Famer s , seven Heisman Trophy winner s , f ive Super Bowl MVPs , and seven Walter Payton Men of the Year honoree s . Along with his profe s sional work , Dunn’s annual Athlete s Fir st Golf Clas sic, a t wo-day extravag anza held at the beautiful Monarch Beach Re sor t in Dana Point, C alifornia, has raised more than $10 million dollar s for Orangewood Children’s Home, which house s and aids dis advant aged and abused children. A s a steadfast believer in philanthropy, Dunn has embraced the spirit of giving back to the loc al communit y, as well as to charitie s throughout the world. 2 4 | AGENTI NCMAG A ZI NE . C O M

not only identif y themselve s as an athlete – a football player – but to also see themselve s as a son, a husband, a father, a role model, a member of their communit y. Being able to develop that kind of balance is ver y impor t ant to an athlete who may still have 50 or 60 year s of life to live af ter their c areer is over. When an athlete’s c areer come s to an end, life c an be aw fully miserable for them if they have allowed themselve s to become psychologic ally identif ied only as an athlete. Ai: When something has not worked out as planned for a client you repre sent, what is the be st way to get back on track ? DD: It, of cour se, depends on the nature of the mist ake, but when something goe s wrong , experience helps quite a bit. O ver the year s , I worked with client s who have gone through dif f icult situations . During those time s , being a voice of experience that, hopefully, c an of fer wise counsel, is so impor t ant. It is kind of like being an experienced doc tor doing surger y. You run into problems you have run into in the past and have learned how to properly and succe s sfully deal with them when they arise. There is also knowing where your limit ations are – knowing that, at time s , it is in ever yone’s be st intere st to bring in someone else or to include other people in the mix . If you ever let your ego or your pride get in the way, it c an be dis astrous . Ai: C an you of fer some advice on how to handle a situation when you become at odds with a client who may be unrealistic about something ? DD: I have cer t ainly got ten to a point where I just had to shoot straight, and that would be my advice. If you lose a client bec ause of shooting straight, then so be it. In my line of work , it doe s arise at time s bec ause athlete s have egos – big one s . It

While Dunn is profoundly dedic ated to his work , his client s , and the charitie s and c ause s he embrace s , nothing compare s to the love and devotion he harbor s for his wife, Le Ann, their four children, Jenny, Allie, Katherine and Michael, and the family ’s t wo dog s , Beau and Bailey. Dunn recently s at down with AGENT inc mag azine to share insight s into what give s him inspiration, drive and purpose in both his profe s sional and private life. We beg an our visit with the L aguna Hills , C alifornia re sident by asking him to give us his def inition of what an agent is and doe s . David Dunn (DD): From a purely technic al st andpoint, an agent speaks and works on behalf of someone else. But the more human answer, from my per sonal st andpoint, is that we t ake young men in their early 20s – fre sh out of school – and guide them in various aspec t s of both their c areer s and per sonal live s . Many of our client s have never writ ten a check . They have ver y lit tle concept of money – it s power and it s danger s . They are young guy s who may have lit tle or no experience in public speaking , being in front of c ameras , and dealing with the media. In the c ase of high-prof ile player s , such as quar terbacks , they get hit with this ins ane and immediate pre s sure as soon as they sign on with a profe s sional team. They are forced to grow up quickly. So as their agent, we guide them through that ins anit y. The life of an athlete who h as just been signed to an NFL team is unlike anything else. In just about ever y profe s sion, you have the chance to gradually grow into your work . But as a player in the NFL, they go from zero to a hundred mile s an hour in seconds . So, knowing what they will encounter, we are there to guide and develop them in way s that will be of great help in ensuring their succe s s .

is just a par t of who they are. If they don’t have a healthy ego, they won’t be succe s sful. Ever y basketball player thinks they are going to make ever y shot and ever y running back thinks they are going to score on ever y play. It is that sor t of ego that drive s them. But overall, I have been for tunate to have client s that have been open to the concept of bringing balance into their live s and who are willing to lis ten to advice. Ai : At th e end of the day, what make s for a great deal? DD: Simply put : achieving the client’s goals . And sometime s , the be st deal is not just about the money. Sometime s it has to do with fac tor s out side of the economic s . That s aid, the economic s are ver y impor t ant and, hopefully, in terms of as sembling a deal, it c an be done in a c reative way – maybe even a groundbreaking way – so that all side s feel good about it. Ai : For many year s , cut ting a great deal meant “my way or the highway.” That doe sn’t seem to be the c ase as much today. DD: I think that’s right. The economic s that come into play when an agent is involved are alway s highly signif ic ant to all par tie s , but I have seen the relationship bet ween agent s and teams improve a ton over my c areer. Back in the old day s , teams dreaded seeing an agent come in to negotiate a deal. It was just a head-but ting competition and could ac tually be an impediment to a dea l. That is ver y dif ferent today. Teams now bet ter under st and the role an agent play s and they accept them. I think that, in many c ase s , the teams are happy to have an exper t involved with the negotiations to make the path smoother. All the pi oneer agent s of the old day s forged that path and have made it easier for us to do what we do today. Ai : An agent’s work come s with a lot of emotional highs and lows . How do you deal with keeping thing s in per spec tive, and with the stre s s?

INTRODUCING TELOYEARS™ TeloYears is a new genetic test that measures your telomere length to reveal the cellular age encoded in your DNA so you can know how well you're aging.

T ELOMERE T E S T IN G : T HE NE X T WAV E OF FI T NE S S T R AC KIN G Since it s’ inception in 2007, the Quantif ied Movement continue s to mainstream with 1 in 10 Americ ans now wearing a mobile tracking device. A new genetic te st out of Silicon Valley, C alifornia, now seeks to up the ante by allowing consumer s to track their f itne s s at the level of their DNA . TeloYear s , introduced in Oc tober 2016, is a DNA te st that measure s your telomere s , or the end c aps of your chromosome s that shor ten and fray with age. B y measuring a component of the human chromosome that change s over time and is inf luenced by a variet y of life st yle and environment al fac tor s , TeloYear s allows f itbit junkie s to track their f itne s s at a cellular level.

WH AT ARE T ELOMERE S? TeloYear s let s you learn and track your cellular age based on the leng th of your telomere s , the protec tive c aps on the ends of your DNA strands that tend to shor ten and fray with age. Imagine our DNA as a long spiral ladder with millions of rung s . Our telomere s are the last few thous and rung s on the ends of the ladder that keep it from “unzipping” as cells divide and thus protec t our gene s , which are made up of long stretche s of rung s in the middle. Technic ally speaking , telom ere s are repetitive stretche s of the nucleotide base pair sequence T TAGGG at the ends of our chromosome s . When we are born, our telomere s are t ypic ally at their longe st. However, throughout our live s the telomere s shor ten. At ever y cell division, telomere s lose a bit of their DNA until, over time, the cell c annot replic ate and become s “sene scent,” which is the cellular equivalent of aging .

WH AT DOE S M Y AGE IN T ELOYE ARS ME AN? Your age in TeloYear s is the ac tual age of the t ypic al man or woman whose telomere leng th is similar to your s . Like chole sterol, BMI, or blood pre s sure, your telomere leng th is a useful biomarker for monitoring the vit alit y of your cells so that you c an improve and bet ter control--perhaps not how old you are --but how well you’re aging . Whether your age in TeloYear s is older or younger than your ac tual age, you c an use your re sult s to manage your cellular health by f inding in them the motivation to t ake steps to slow down the clock on the aging proce s s by changing cer t ain life st yle behavior that have been shown to as sociate with telomere leng th, including diet, exerci se, sleep, or stre s s management.

DID YOU KNOW?

Why Telomeres Are Important

One of the founders of Telomere Diagnostics earned the 2009 Nobel Prize in Medicine for the award-winning discovery of how chromosomes are protected by telomeres and the enzyme telomerase.

For our bodies to heal and function properly, cells must divide to replace old, worn out ones. Telomeres prevent genomic instability during this division, but shorten and fray with age.

But That’s Not the Whole Story… The rate of change of your telomere length is very individual and can be affected, both positively and negatively, by many contributing factors. And because telomere length changes over time, knowing your age in TeloYears reveals actionable and inspiring knowledge about how well you’re aging at the level of your DNA.

CAN I BEC OME YOUN GER IN T ELOYE ARS? Several studie s have shown that, ye s , your rate of telomere leng th shor tening may be slowed when sust ained change s to your life st yle are made. Some studie s have even sug ge sted that telomere leng th may increase over time. Fac tor s linked to telomere leng th include.

DID YOU KNOW? Identical twin brothers, astronauts Captains Mark and Scott Kelly, are part of an NASA experiment. NASA researchers hypothesize that accelerated telomere shortening will be associated with Scott, who spent nearly a year on the International Space Station (ISS), as compared to his twin Mark, who stayed on Earth to serve as the ground-based control.1

SIX Q UIC K S T EP S TO GRE AT ER ENERGY AND BE T T ER HE ALT H PLAY VIDEO

It is unfor tunate that many of us lead hurried live s and are too busy to t ake c are of our selve s the way we should — eating well, get ting suf f icient exercise, and t aking the time to get the re st we really need to increase our energ y and maint ain our ment al, emotional, and phy sic al well-being . It’s for tunate, though, that for the stre s sed per son seeking greater vit alit y, health — and tranquilit y — amid the hustle of the modern world, there is one par ticular healing technolog y that of fer s a simple, easy - toimplement solution: Pranic Healing®.
