Is important to learn from the past, the lessons of history are important... aware that you are designing for the present, but you are also designing

important... if you want to look far ahead, first look far back, and them be designing for the future, which is unknown.

ZAGREB LANDMARKS

This project focuses on the reconfiguration of the interior facades of our building in Zagreb, with the aim of redefining its volume and innovatively transforming the upper roof. The proposal employs a continuous tube system that functions both as an interior facade and a functional element at the roof level, providing a strategicview towards the city’s landmarks, including the Zagreb Cathedral.

The design seeks to balance the preservation of historical values with an architectural solution that, while crafted for the present, considers its enduring significance over time. The system incorporates plastic elements that commemorate important aspects of the city, o ering a solution that respects the urban context and remains meaningful throughout the years.

OBJETIVE

The proposed project aims to connect our building’s visual experience with the rich city landscape. We have views of notable Zagreb landmarks, including Kula Lotrščak and Zagrebačka Uspinjiača, and this proposal also seeks to incorporate the cathedral. The connection with this landmark will be achieved through a new open space on the roof of our building, creating a new way to experience the city from above and providing the desired westward view towards the cathedral. Additionally, the same project will strategically restore the interior facade.

LOCATION CLOSENEIGHBORS

The location on Ilica Street 16 and the height relationship of the main volume allow for the project to be planned without a ecting neighbouring buildings. This configuration facilitates reachingviews towards the north of the city, capturing the cathedral from the upper level, while enclosing the volume with the interior facades.

STRATEGIC APPROACH

To create a continuous volume, the oors will extend from level 1rs to the attic, reaching the main elevator out wall. In this profile, posts will be installed to structure the interior facades and delineate the volume, also functioning as the enclosing element on the upper level.

SLOPESREMOVED

WALLREPLACED

The inward-sloping sections will be removed, creating an open space that allows for the desiredviews.Additionally, the existingwallswill be replacedwith a systemof posts that generate the enclosure.

TIME HERITAGE

We chose the spiral shape as it symbolizes the rhythmic ow of time and seasons, embodying natural perfection and elegance through its continuous evolution.Additionally, the spiral motif is a significant element in the ornamentation of the city’s urban lighting infrastructure and furniture. This design choice re ects a deliberate e ort to achieve integration with the urban aesthetic and language.

The golden oak leaves symbolize resilience and elegance, commemorating the characteristics of the national tree. This emblem represents the robust heritage and enduring presence of the oak, which has long been a symbol of strength and stability. The golden hue of the leaves further accentuates their significance, embodying the timeless beauty and unwavering fortitude that the oak tree has come to represent in our nation’s history.
