P I K SPECIAL EDITION JUNE p h o t o g r a p h e r s i n k o

r e a . c o m

For the past 8 months, we have been collecting one of the most amazing and artistic collections of photography from all over the peninsula. We started this project with the sole intention of contribution to the development of the scene in Korea, as well as to help connect local and international talent within and outside the peninsula. With the arrival of summer, we wanted to pause for a moment and create a special edition in which we all can look back at this amazing journey, and dream for the future. We knew this wasn’t going to be easy to accomplish, so we gathered a group of talented and professional photographers to help us select some of the best. With so much quality of work at stake, the task wasn’t easy, and we truly appreciate the fact that so many of you have taken the time to submit photos to us ,which enabled us to put this issue together. We hope that our project has somehow served as an inspiration to many of you, and that it will continue to be used as a tool for the development of photography in Korea.

I’m a South African living in my adopted South Korea. I’m not a specific type of photographer. I just like to keep my eyes wide open and my camera near. When I see something beautiful or different I shoot. I pour time into learning, experimenting and evolving continuously and someday I hope to be one of the best.

Scott Rotzoll

I’ve only become more serious about photography in the past couple of years. My background is in design and imagery, so learning to pair the two has stirred passion in photography and given me a clearer direction. I love to travel, so images of various lands, cultures and the people in them is where it’s at for me..

Dorette Reyneke

I’m Dorette, a photographer of little people, people in love, beautiful places, and all kinds of things. I’m currently based in Cheongju, South Korea where I live with my part-time personal “model” and husband Hendrik. I grew up on a sheep and cattle farm in the amazing South Africa.I graduated from advertising school specializing in Art Direction. Photography is in the top 10 things I love in life.

Aaron Choi

Landscape and travel photographer based in South Korea. I work mostly with various stock agencies and various local photo exhibitions.

Leigh MacArthur

I am Canadian born photographer based in Samcheok, Gangwondo. I have been photographing the Korean landscape for 10 years. I am always in search of natural beauty that emanates a sense of balance between tranquility and power drawing inspiration from mid to late Joseon Dynasty artistic themes and shapes mixed with European and Canadian colours.

Andrew Faulk

I am an educator and photographer living in Seoul. I tinkered with film cameras when I was young, However, I did not become an active hobbyist until two years ago when I began shooting in Seoul. I love to take photos of everything. Simply put, I am dude who is happy when there is a lens in front of my face.

“I absolutely adore this image. It gave a unique spin to the “Spring” theme it was submitted to. It looks to me like an image that didn’t just happen, but was created with an idea in mind. The lines, angle and the composition came together nicely. I just love it! “ - Dorette Reyneke

“Movement and stillness are both exquisitely captured in this monochrome image by Marco Devon. Not only does the shot tell a larger story and provide a sense of place, it conveys the underlying sadness of the common man. I love it. - Andrew Faulk

“The sunlight is hitting the umbrella in a perfect angle creating this magical silhouette of couples in love. The rainbow colored umbrella gives vibrant and very warm feel to the scene. Overall, excellent composition and great use of the sunlight to create that silhouette and accentuate the mood.” - Aaron Choi

“I found myself coming back to this shot over and over again, and each time I returned, I could imagine a different scenario playing out. A kid on the street in some foreign land keeping himself amused, an evening at the circus just away from the rides and chaos, a night scene in a modern day market where often you’ll see kids playing while their parents shop. The framing, the light, and the blur are just right to allow for the imagination to create a story.” - Scott Rotzoll

“Dylan Goldby’s April submission captures an excellent balance of tranquility and power. The peacefulness of the man playing the flute with his back to the gulls matches perfectly with the the power of the sunlight through the clouds. The black and white tones of the scene intensifies the mood of the scene and gives it a mystique. Is he rejoicing the passing of the storm? Is the incoming storm amplifying his sadness or loneliness? Whichever way the photograph is read, it is definitely one that makes you stop to feel the tranquility, experience the power, and wonder about the story.” - Leigh MacArthur

“My top pik is by Andrew Faulk. Apart from being technically spot-on and beautifully processed, this photograph evoked so many emotions in me at once. It has a unique charm to it that I have never seen in Korean photographs before. He managed to tell a story of an “adjumma” in such a different way compared to the normal street photo of them selling things or walking in the market. He gave her class, beauty and intrigue - something that every woman wants to see in a photograph of herself.” - Lorryn Smit
