“For when I am weak, then am I strong”

“For this thing I besought the Lord thrice, that it might depart from me. And he said unto me, My grace is sufficient for thee: for my strength is made perfect in weakness. Most gladly therefore will I rather glory in my infirmities, that the power of Christ may rest upon me. Therefore I take pleasure in infirmities, in reproaches, in necessities, in persecutions, in distresses for Christ's sake: for when I am weak, then am I strong.

My weaknesses, shortcomings and even my failures remind me of my need for a perfect God. Only in my need for Him can I see His power. I love that the scripture says, “so that Christ’s power may rest on me”. Is a reminder of the relationship we have with God. When my own children were little face a challenging circumstance, they often run to me and lean on me. I rest my arm (and, figuratively, the weight of my experience, my authority, my ideas and solutions) on their shoulder. We rest on one another as a means of bringing comfort and reassurance. I see that picture in 2 Corinthians: 1. I am weak.

2. I run to and lean on the Heavenly Father.

3. Heavenly Father rests His power on me.

4. I am strong because of my relationship to God. “But I rejoiced in the Lord greatly, that now at the last your care of me hath flourished again; wherein ye were also careful, but ye lacked opportunity. Not that I speak in respect of want: for I have learned, in whatsoever state I am, therewith to be content. I know both how to be abased, and I know how to abound: every where and in all things I am instructed both to be full and to be hungry, both to abound and to suffer need. I can do all things through Christ which strengtheneth me (Php 4:10-13).

“But now thus saith the LORD that created thee, O Jacob, and he that formed thee, O Israel, Fear not: for I have redeemed thee, I have called thee by thy name; thou art mine. When thou passest through the waters, I will be with thee; and through the rivers, they shall not overflow thee: when thou walkest through the fire, thou shalt not be burned; neither shall the flame kindle upon thee” (Isa 43:1-2).
