“I call heaven and earth to record this day against you, that I have set before you life and death, blessing and cursing: therefore choose life, that both thou and thy seed may live: That thou mayest love the LORD thy God, and that thou mayest obey his voice, and that thou mayest cleave unto him: for he is thy life, and the length of thy days: that thou mayest dwell in the land which the LORD sware unto thy fathers, to Abraham, to Isaac, and to Jacob, to give them” (Due 30:19-20).

The Bible informs us that God created people in His image (Genesis 1:26-27). Adam and Eve rebelled against God’s one command by eating the forbidden fruit and brought about the curse on the earth, which resulted in toil, suffering, and death (Genesis 3). People have been sinful by nature ever since, but we are still special in God’s eyes. Sin has corrupted it, but we still bear the image of God within us.

We are still more than animals, and God considers the taking of human life to be an attack on His image.

“Many therefore of his disciples, when they had heard this, said, This is an hard saying; who can hear it? When Jesus knew in himself that his disciples murmured at it, he said unto them, Doth this offend you? What and if ye shall see the Son of man ascend up where he was before? It is the spirit that quickeneth; the esh pro teth nothing: the words that I speak unto you, they are spirit, and they are life. But there are some of you that believe not. For Jesus knew from the beginning who they were that believed not, and who should betray him” (Joh 6:60-64).

Immediately after the ood, God instituted capital punishment for killing people. God told Noah, “surely your blood of your lives will I require; at the hand of every beast will I require it, and at the hand of man; at the hand of every man’s brother will I require the life of man.

Whoso sheddeth man’s blood, by man shall his blood be shed: for in the image of God made He man” (Genesis 9:6).
