In the Valley of Decision

“Proclaim ye this among the Gentiles; Prepare war, wake up the mighty men, let all the men of war draw near; let them come up: Beat your plowshares into swords, and your pruninghooks into spears: let the weak say, I am strong. Assemble yourselves, and come, all ye heathen, and gather yourselves together round about: thither cause thy mighty ones to come down, O LORD. Let the heathen be wakened, and come up to the valley of Jehoshaphat: for there will I sit to judge all the heathen round about. Put ye in the sickle, for the harvest is ripe: come, get you down; for the press is full, the fats over ow; for their wickedness is great. Multitudes, multitudes in the valley of decision: for the day of the LORD is near in the valley of decision” (Joel 3:9-14).

I suggest that the valley of decision need not be an actual place. The valley of decision isn’t somewhere you visit on a Sunday afternoon drive, you can’t set the coordinates for it on your GPS. It doesn’t have to be somewhere you can point to on a map, but it’s a place that we all have been. We all make decisions every day of our lives. Most of them are small and inconsequential, and some of them are downright trivial, almost automatic. Decisions bring consequences. However good or bad, however major or minor, those consequences might be, decisions always bring consequences.

“I call heaven and earth to record this day against you, that I have set before you life and death, blessing and cursing: therefore choose life, that both thou and thy seed may live: That thou mayest love the LORD thy God, and that thou mayest obey his voice, and that thou mayest cleave unto him: for he is thy life, and the length of thy days: that thou mayest dwell in the land which the LORD sware unto thy fathers, to Abraham, to Isaac, and to Jacob, to give them” (Due 30:19-20).

“Now therefore fear the LORD, and serve him in sincerity and in truth: and put away the gods which your fathers served on the other side of the ood, and in Egypt; and serve ye the LORD.
