In the days of the prophet Elijah, Israel turned their backs on God to serve the false god Baal. The deception of the teachings of Jezebel, King Ahab’s wife, polluted the prophets of Israel, who offered sacrifices to Baal. God, speaking though Elijah to stop the rain and bring a famine onto the land for three and a half years, was trying to get the attention of the children of Israel. There are times when God has to bring us to epic catastrophes to get our attention.

“Elijah the Tishbite, who was of the inhabitants of Gilead, said unto Ahab, As the LORD God of Israel liveth, before whom I stand, there shall not be dew nor rain these years, but according to my word” (1Ki 17:1).

During this drought, God, through the miracles of the ravens, of sending him to where there was water, and of providing a widow woman, of Zarephath, which belongeth to Zidon, sustained him. God prepared him so he would be able give God’s people word to His people. After three and a half years, God told Elijah to go speak to the children of Israel. He was given the message of revival so that they would acknowledge their true God. In his zeal for the Lord, Elijah put a challenge to the king, the people and the prophets of Baal, to be witnessed before all. Elijah called for the prophets, four hundred and fifty men of Baal, “Let them therefore give us two bullocks; and let them choose one bullock for themselves, and cut it in pieces, and lay it on wood, and put no fire under: and I will dress the other bullock, and lay it on wood, and put no fire under: And call ye on the name of your gods, and I will call on the name of the LORD: and the God that answereth by fire, let him be God. And all the people answered and said, It is well spoken” (1Ki 18:23-24).

Elijah let the prophets of Baal go first, because this was a witness to the people; and they carried out their task that morning: preparing the bullock, laying it on their altar, and they began to cry out to their god. It is interesting that they began at the time of the morning sacrifice, as God told them to do.

“And he brought the meat offering, and took an handful thereof, and burnt it upon the altar, beside the burnt sacrifice of the morning” (Lev 9:17). Jesus

also was hung on the cross, at the time of the morning sacrifice; for six hours He hung there till the evening sacrifice and then gave up the ghost (spirit).

The prophets went through their routine, crying out to their god, but there was no voice heard. By noon Elijah began to chide them saying, “Cry aloud: for he is a god; either he is talking, or he is pursuing, or he is in a journey, or peradventure he sleepeth, and must be awaked.” They cried aloud leaping on the altar, breaking it down, “and cut themselves after their manner with knives and lancets, till the blood gushed out upon them. And it came to pass, when midday was past, and they prophesied until the time of the offering of the evening sacrifice, that there was neither voice, nor any to answer, nor any that regarded” (1Kings 18:27-29).

When the prophets of Baal finished, Elijah stood up and said unto all the people, “Come near unto me. And all the people came near unto him. And he repaired the altar of the LORD that was broken down.” This was when the revival began: he had to repair what the prophets had broken. “And Elijah took twelve stones, according to the number of the tribes of the sons of Jacob...and with the stones he built an altar in the name of the LORD.” To bring home the point, he dug a trench around the altar, filling it with two measures of seed, and poured four barrels of water three times into the trench with the meal, that the water overflowed the trench. Our minds need to remember how precious these commodities were in the time of famine.

At the time of the evening sacrifice Elijah began to pray. All revivals begin with prayer; and Elijah, seeing the need, cried out to God saying, “Hear me, O LORD, hear me, that this people may know that thou art the LORD God, and that thou hast turned their heart back again. Then the fire of the LORD fell, and consumed the burnt sacrifice, and the wood, and the stones, and the dust, and licked up the water that was in the trench. And when all the people saw it, they fell on their faces: and they said, The LORD, he is the God; the LORD, he is the God. (1Ki 18:37-39)” The fire fell from heaven, and it consumed everything, even lapping up the water. There was no doubt about it: God was the true God.

This all reveals to us the power of true revival, how lives can be brought back to the living God. It is the Revival Fires setting our hearts aflame, rejoicing in the God of our hope.

This was not the end of the revival. After Elijah had all the false prophets of Baal killed, he said unto Ahab, “Get thee up, eat and drink; for there is a sound of abundance of rain.” This revival marked the end of the drought, proving once again, it is God who controls the wind and weather, holding the universe together. Elijah got down on his knees and began to pray, for after a revival, the work is not finished. There is still a need to stay in touch with God. Elijah’s faith was tried again, believing God would send the rain, but not knowing when it would come; so he prayed.

Elijah sent his servant to see if anything was happening with the weather, and the servant saw nothing. He told the servant to go seven times. We have to be persistent in our search and persevere in our faith towards God; even when we do not see it, God is working. The seventh time the servant returned with his observation saying, “Behold, there ariseth a little cloud out of the sea, like a man's hand.” This time Elijah knew, as Noah knew seven days before the flood, the rain was coming. In the excitement, Elijah told Ahab to prepare his chariot; it was time to go, for there was a sound of abundance of rain. If he did not hurry, the rain would make it impossible to get away.

The cloud resembled a man’s hand, revealing the five gifts of the ministry in Ephesians 4:11. Who will bring the Word of God to all who will hear? The rush was so great that Elijah girded up his loins, ready to run; and he ran so fast that he out ran Ahab and his chariot to the entrance of Jezreel. The much desired rain came to bring life back to God’s people. The Revival Fires are not just about preaching repentance for salvation, but also about repentance for turning the backslider to the real God, the maker of heaven and earth.
