OUR GOD IS A CONSUMING FIRE “Take heed unto yourselves, lest ye forget the covenant of the LORD your God, which he made with you, and make you a graven image, or the likeness of any thing, which the LORD thy God hath forbidden thee. For the LORD thy God is a consuming fire, even a jealous God. When thou shalt beget children, and children's children, and ye shall have remained long in the land, and shall corrupt yourselves, and make a graven image, or the likeness of any thing, and shall do evil in the sight of the LORD thy God, to provoke him to anger” (De 4:23-25) God is first identified as a “consuming fire” in Deuteronomy 4:24 and 9:3. The writer to the Hebrews reiterates, warning the Hebrews to worship God with reverence and awe “for our God is a consuming fire.” There is nothing mysterious about the Hebrew and Greek words translated “consuming fire.”

They mean exactly that—a fire that utterly consumes or destroys. How, then, can a loving and merciful God also be a consuming fire that utterly destroys?

“See that ye refuse not him that speaketh. For if they escaped not who refused him that spake on earth, much more shall not we escape, if we turn away from him that speaketh from heaven: Whose voice then shook the earth: but now he hath promised, saying, Yet once more I shake not the earth only, but also heaven. And this word, Yet once more, signifieth the removing of those things that are shaken, as of things that are made, that those things which cannot be shaken may remain. Wherefore we receiving a kingdom which cannot be moved, let us have grace, whereby we may serve God acceptably with reverence and godly fear: For our God is a consuming fire” (Heb 12:25-28).

There are several incidents in which God’s wrath, judgment, holiness or power are displayed by fire from heaven. Aaron’s sons Abihu and Nadab were destroyed by fire when they offered a profane sacrifice, “strange fire,” in the tabernacle a sign of their disregard for the utter holiness of God and the need to honor Him in solemn and holy fear. The confrontation between Elijah and the prophets of Baal on Mount Carmel is another example of consuming fire from God. The prophets of Baal called upon their god all day long to rain fire from heaven to no avail. Then Elijah built an altar of stones, dug a ditch around it, put the sacrifice on the top of wood and called for water to be poured over his sacrifice three times. Elijah called upon God, and God sent fire

down from heaven, completely consuming the sacrifice, the wood, and the stones and licking up the water in the ditch. Then His anger turned against the false prophets, and they were all killed. When prophesying the destruction of the Assyrians, who resisted the true and living God and warred against His people, Isaiah refers to the tongue of the Lord as a consuming fire and He said, “Behold, the name of the LORD cometh from far, burning with his anger, and the burden thereof is heavy: his lips are full of indignation, and his tongue as a devouring fire” (Isaiah 30:27-30).

The consuming power of God can be used for destruction; or it can also be the power that consumes us with a desire to do His will, called zeal. Jesus was certainly humble, gentle, friendly and loving. And yet, He was not the softskinned, passive sage seen so often in works of art. Reading what He endured at the cross vouches for His physical fitness. But the gospels also describe Jesus as passionate, direct, quick-minded and brave. A fragile pushover could never have single-handedly cleared a courtyard full of money changers, or stood His ground against the commotion that came after. The disciples are reminded of Psalm 69:9, which refers to the Messiah. "Zeal" is defined as "passion, energy and devotion." Jesus' passion for the purity of the temple is clear. “I am become a stranger unto my brethren, and an alien unto my mother's children. For the zeal of thine house hath eaten me up; and the reproaches of them that reproached thee are fallen upon me” (Ps 69:8-9).

Let the fires of Lord consume us this Feast of Pentecost with overflowing joy, to fulfill His purpose in these last days. “And captivate us Lord Jesus set our eyes on You. Devastate us with Your presence falling down, and rushing river draw us nearer Holy fountain consume us with You. Captivate us Lord Jesus with You”. “ For out of Jerusalem shall go forth a remnant, and they that escape out of mount Zion: the zeal of the LORD of hosts shall do this” (2Ki 19:31). There is a remnant of God who are consumed the power of the Lord, which will bring again Zion; as King David they will not rest till a place for the Lord will be found, a habitation for our mighty God. Rejoice in the Lord in Spirit and Truth, laying aside the cares of this world, and let God have His way, as we assemble to glorify His name.
