CHRIST OUR PASSOVER FOR GOD SO LOVED THE WORLD

“And as Moses lifted up the serpent in the wilderness, even so must the Son of man be lifted up: That whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have eternal life. For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life.

For God sent not his Son into the world to condemn the world; but that the world through him might be saved. He that believeth on him is not condemned: but he that believeth not is condemned already, because he hath not believed in the name of the only begotten Son of God. And this is the condemnation, that light is come into the world, and men loved darkness rather than light, because their deeds were evil. For every one that doeth evil hateth the light, neither cometh to the light, lest his deeds should be reproved.

But he that doeth truth cometh to the light, that his deeds may be made manifest, that they are wrought in God” (Joh 3:14-21).

God tested the faith of Abraham saying, “Take now thy son, thine only son Isaac, whom thou lovest, and get thee into the land of Moriah; and offer him there for a burnt offering upon one of the mountains which I will tell thee of” (Gen 22:2).

The promise to Abraham was he would have a son who would be his heir; God called Isaac Abraham’s only son, even though Abraham was given a son through Hagar, Ishmael, God called Isaac his only son, prophesying of HIs only begotten Son Jesus Christ.

God cannot lie! “All the prophets and the law prophesied until John” (the Baptist) (Matt 11:13) The testing of Abraham offering his son prophesied what the Father did with Jesus, His only begotten Son. God revealing His great love for this world, sent His Son to take on the sins of us all.

Just as Isaac carried the wood to Mount Moriah, Jesus carried the cross to Mount Calvary. Just as Isaac submitted to the will of Abraham, Jesus submitted to the will of the Father.

God saw how great Abraham’s faith was when he told Abraham to offer Isaac.

Abraham believed that if Isaac was the seed of promise, then God would raise his from the dead.

“And they came to the place which God had told him of; and Abraham built an altar there, and laid the wood in order, and bound Isaac his son, and laid him on the altar upon the wood. And Abraham stretched forth his hand, and took the knife to slay his son. And the angel of the LORD called unto him out of heaven, and said, Abraham, Abraham: and he said, Here am I. And he said, Lay not thine hand upon the lad, neither do thou any thing unto him: for now I know that thou fearest God, seeing thou hast not withheld thy son, thine only son from me. And Abraham lifted up his eyes, and looked, and behold behind him a ram caught in a thicket by his horns: and Abraham went and took the ram, and offered him up for a burnt offering in the stead of his son” (Gen 22:9-13).

In the prophecy of Isaac, and the suffering and crucifixion of Jesus, we see Jehovah Jireh, God providing. In Isaac, God provided a ram caught in the thicket, Jesus, a crown of thorns. This is the love of God to the world, “This is my commandment, that ye love one another, as I have loved you. Greater love hath no man than this, that a man lay down his life for his friends” (John 15:12,13).

The feast of Passover has been celebrated by Jews for thousands of years. in remembrance of how God delivered the children of Israel from enslavement in Egypt. The celebration itself was given to Israel while they were still in Egypt.

The original Passover centered on the lamb, which was sacrificed and its blood put over the doorposts as a sign of faith, so that the Lord would pass over their houses during the last plague, poured out on the Egyptians, was the killing of every firstborn.

Much of the symbolism of Jesus' last Passover week is lost to us because we are unaware of the customs of the time. For example, Jesus came into the city of Jerusalem five days before the lamb was killed in the temple as the Passover sacrifice for the sins of the people of Israel. Five days before the lamb was to be sacrificed, it was chosen. Therefore, Jesus entered Jerusalem on lamb selection day as the lamb of God. The day Jesus was crucified was the day of the Passover celebration and the day that the Passover lamb was to be sacrificed. For the previous 1,200 years, the priest would blow the shophar (ram's horn) at 3:00 p.m, the moment the lamb was sacrificed; and all the people would pause to contemplate the sacrifice for sins on behalf of the people of Israel. At 3:00 pm, Jesus was being crucified, He said, "It is finished�, at the moment that the Passover lamb was sacrificed and the shophar was blown from the Temple.

It was during a Passover supper that night when Jesus proclaimed that the meal represented Himself and that He was instituting the New Covenant, which was foretold by Jeremiah, Ezekiel, and Isaiah. The celebration of this covenant has become the ordinance of communion in the Christian Church. At the end of the supper, Jesus took the unleavened bread, broke it, and said that it represented His body. Then He took the cup of wine, saying that this was the new covenant in His blood "poured out for you.� It is through His sacrificial death that we are cleansed from our sins before God. Jesus is our Passover Lamb, and as we study the original Passover, we learn how we can experience Jesus more deeply and personally in our lives today.

This we do in remembrance of his sacrifice, and his love for us on the cross.

The Bible truth is so important for us to understand! Because of our sins, we deserve to die, but the love of God sent His Son Jesus to die in our place as our substitute so our sins could be forgiven!

JESUS REVEALED IN THE PASSOVER SUPPER Bro David McNabb And they shall eat the flesh in that night, roast with fire, and unleavened bread; and with bitter herbs they shall eat it” (Ex 12:8).

They were to eat the lamb roasted over fire because it was quick: the same reason they were to eat it with their loins girded, their sandals on their feet and their staff in their hand. “Eat it in haste; it is the LORD's Passover.” They did not know exactly when the LORD was going to call them out but they were to be prepared to go when He did. Roasting the lamb over fire was much quicker than boiling it in a pot.

The Bible tells us that the Israelites were to eat only unleavened bread every year during Passover as a commemoration of the Exodus from Egyptian bondage. Since the children of Israel left Egypt hastily, they did not have time for the bread to rise, so it was made on that very first Passover without leaven, also known as yeast.

Bitter herbs play an important role in the Lord's Passover celebration. They serve as a reminder of the bitter suffering of the Israelites while enslaved by the Egyptians. Using the bitter herbs as part of the Passover Supper helps embody the reality of their hard experiences. And of course, we can also reflect on our own difficult and hard situations, of our own bondage, out of which the Lord has brought and delivered us - our coming out of that spiritual Egypt.

“For I have received of the Lord that which also I delivered unto you, That the Lord Jesus the same night in which he was betrayed took bread: And when he had given thanks, he brake it, and said, Take, eat: this is my body, which is broken for you: this do in remembrance of me. After the same manner also he took the cup, when he had supped, saying, This cup is the new testament in my blood: this do ye, as oft as ye drink it, in remembrance of me. For as often as ye eat this bread, and drink this cup, ye do shew the Lord's death till he come.

Wherefore whosoever shall eat this bread, and drink this cup of the Lord, unworthily, shall be guilty of the body and blood of the Lord. But let a man examine himself, and so let him eat of that bread, and drink of that cup. For he that eateth and drinketh unworthily, eateth and drinketh damnation to himself, not discerning the Lord's body. For this cause many are weak and sickly among you, and many sleep. For if we would judge ourselves, we should not be judged” (1Co 11:23-31).
