Born in Las Lumbreras, Murcia, Valverde comes from a family related to the world of cycling, his father Juan was an amateur bike racer and bought him his first bike when he was six years old. His brother, Juan Francisco was a road racing cyclists amateur from some years. Valverde's first race was in Jumilla and he finished second. The last weekend he won his first race in Yecla. He had more than fifty consecutive victories between the ages of 11 and 13, having the nickname “El Imbatido”.

He has a total of 133 victories as a professional; in addition, he is the winner of the 2006 and 2008 UCI ProTour and 2014 and 2015 UCI WorldTour.
