Find Your Fit! Reclaim Your Fun!
FITniche he Running Stores
July 2017
SMILE AND MEAN IT! Can Smiling Make You Faster? YES! As Well As Happier, Healthier, More Enduring & Quicker to Recover.
Smile and Mean it! That's the #1 Rule of Running at all of our FITniche stores, and for good reason. Why, you ask? 1) Most of the best very best physiological benefits of aerobic exercise occur at extremely easy paces—paces that are easy to smile through. How easy is that? World-class runners who click off insane 4:35-4:45 mile splits in marathons routinely train in the 8-9 minute per mile range. That's almost 200% slower than their race pace! 2) We also believe that running should be fun. Our earliest exercise experiences that involved running occurred as kids. Running was pure joy back then. It was called play. Finding ways to reclaim that fun is the key to finding and maintaining lifelong motivation for running. 3) Re-framing your suffering in a race or a difficult workout by putting a smile on your face often produces brilliant results. In my 7 mile swim around Lido Key several months ago, the last 3 miles were really, really tough. I found that getting my smile back on produced almost as much lift and performance improvement as the bites of potato and Gatorade that my kayaker was rationing me.
Champions! “The power of confidence one can take from a simple smile is priceless, something that I hear time and time again from world Ironman triathlon champions Natascha Badmann and Chrissie Wellington," says coach Joanna Lawn. “They continuously say ‘smile and everything will be wonderful’. “I definitely believe there is a power of energy in this, and it is not just coincidence they both have won numerous world titles." “The road to success is simple, and it starts with a smile.”
So smile! Life is short. Enjoy it and make the most of every minute, especially your workout minutes. It's all better when you do. Rich and the Crew at you local FITniche running stores.
Samuele Marcora, a Welsh Exercise Physiologist, believes that exercise performance is regulated egulated by perception of effort and that it is the sole cause of fatigue. In other words, he believes we bonk because we give up, and we give up because we can’t stand the suffering any longer. Forcing a smile reduces the perceived level of suffering and thus increases your performance potential. Try it! What have you got to lose?

WHERE DO YOU BUY YOUR RUNNING SHOES? Where you buy your running shoes could mean the difference between whether you continue to run or not – the most common reasons for quitting being discomfort, pain, and injury. All shoes are not created equal, in and of themselves, and especially, not for your personal needs. That is why you need expert evaluation and recommendations each and every time you buy new running shoes. Being a runner, your needs will continually change over time. Your weight will change, your strength will change, your stability needs may change, your feet will get longer and possibly wider, and various aches and pains may appear seemingly out of nowhere. Every one of these issues should be considered and addressed with each new shoe purchase or injury may result. As far as pain is concerned, it should be addressed immediately as it is your body’s way of telling you that something is wrong and something needs to change. If you are serious about your sport and like the way your feet are shaped, hate pain, and want to continue to run or walk with pleasure, heed the above. If you experience any type of physical discomfort during or after your run you are most likely in the wrong shoe for you. It may be a fine shoe for someone else, just not for you. All running stores are not created equal and all employees have different levels of knowledge and experience. You want the employee who can answer your concerns with confidence and give you specific reasons for their recommendations and how they will most likely help your concerns. If you are in the most correct footwear products for you (shoes, foot supports and socks), expect them to work. There is an important reason for each and an experienced shoe-fitting employee should be well versed in what they are, how they work, why they will help you, and their competitive differences. Your “new shoe” experience should be a conversation that concludes with you feeling comfortable that you will be running better, quite possibly faster, and without pain during your entire run. All playing an almost equally important roll, foot supports, shoes, and socks help maintain your personal bodily alignment throughout your entire run and protect you from excess motion as well as impact and shear forces. Any improper and excess movement will hinder your performance and cause wear and tear on your body. Pain and injury will be the result and quite possibly arthritis and joint replacement in the future. It is that important and why you must address any discomfort as soon as possible. You should have no physical distractions other than that awesome mental “runner’s high”. At least with today’s technology, no machine can even come close to a well-versed and experienced running shoe fitter in getting your perfect fit. With machines, there are no options for individuality. They have a place but should not be relied on exclusively. So, don’t be overly impressed with technology, be impressed with results. And what about buying blindly on the internet, especially if you are having pain? I would say, good luck. It’s like trying to hit a target in the dark. Remember, there is one constant – change. Yes, you change and shoes change. The same model shoe you are wearing today will probably not be exactly the same next year. If you’ve been running for a while I’m sure you have already found this out. The internet can offer free shipping and free returns but not the eyes and ears of a good shoefitter, nor the video and pictures of a machine for that matter. And, I don’t remember the last time a running store didn’t also offer free shipping and free returns. By the way, while in the store, all the more and more uncommon human interaction, including problem solving and pleasant conversation is free, too! Gene Ulishney, BSHPE,CPED,BOCPED P.S. And listen when they say you need a larger size…they’re probably right!

Tampa Bay Buccaneers Q & A Shoshanah Vaughn How long have you been playing football? I first became interested in football around age 22. I played 1 year in college before playing 9 years in the NFL. I have always been with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.
On a Pathway to Healthiness: Interview with Offensive Tackle Demar Dotson
Wow… 9 years! How do you stay healthy each season? I would say G-d first and then just mainly by eating right and taking care of my body. And just how do you take care of your body? By stretching and seeing my chiropractor, Dr. Rhee at Physical Chiropractic of Tampa Bay. Weight training and cardio such as running for 30 minutes also contribute to me staying healthy. Yes, running… Some people love it, while others hate it. How do you personally incorporate running into your training? Well, with football training, I already get enough running in as it is, but I also play basketball for more runs. Which injuries are you susceptible to as a football player, and which have you had? My position has the risk of concussions and knee injuries. I have personally had both a concussion and knee surgery. Ouch. What are the top 3 things you do to prevent injury? Stretching, staying hydrated to keep my muscles loose, and staying very aware of my surroundings. How does your chiropractor help in your running and overall football performance? He works my entire body, which I really appreciate since you can have pain in one spot and not know that it’s really something else that’s off.

In one sentence, what is the best advice you can think of to give other seasoned athletes that are looking to get better leg movement and run at optimal performance?
“Eat, sleep, run, and go see your chiropractor.” 36

He is a lifelong resident of St. Petersburg, and has been active, as both a participant and race manager for in excess of thirty years. He has worked on all phases of race production, including being one of the early race directors of St. Anthony’s Triathlon; announces many races on the West Coast of Florida, and served the Florida Region on the National Board of Directors for USATriathlon for six years, and is the Past President of that Organization. He has two daughters (Shana Harrington and Brianne Gaal), two son’s in law (Scott Lowery and Marty Gaal) , and one granddaughter (Haileigh Houser) who are active triathletes. He brings this experience to our races as our race announcer.
September/October
Many of the best and safest cyclists still don’t use lights on their bikes during the daytime. Whether it doesn’t look “cool,” or they don’t see the need with their bright colors, I see only a small minority using them regularly. Statistics confirm that most vehicle/bicycle accidents occur during daylight hours. Most riders ride during daylight hours. As an attorney who specializes in representing cyclists injured when struck by vehicles, I can confirm that most injuries are major injuries. Ergo, it seems to make sense to take any advantage we can to help not become a statistic, or to need my services as an injury attorney. I have tried and continue to test all types of lights, cameras, and other safety gear to help me as a cyclist. I’ve recently begun using what I believe to be the single best rear light I’ve ever used: the Bontrager Flare R. I believe this is the first tail light designed specifically for daytime use. It has several solid and several strobe settings. The best strobe setting can be seen 1.2 miles away. It also has side strobes to help being seen up to at least 180 degrees. I’m not going to go into too much detail about this light, you can go to U tube for testing videos that say it all. I will tell you the fastening mechanism is quick, easy, and requires no tools, making it easy to switch between bikes quickly. It is rechargeable, with a micro usb cable provided, and the battery seems to be quite good, requiring recharging only after five to six hours at maximum burn. Hopefully, Bontrager (or another manufacturer) will come out with a headlight for daytime use as good as this one. To increase your odds of not becoming an accident statistic on your bike, I strongly encourage you consider this light. PS: I have not been asked by Bontrager to test or write a review about this light; and I paid full price for mine. Be safe out there!

11 Lessons for Lady Triathletes aka Triathletas
1. Secure your goggles with this method so if your goggles get knocked off during the swim, you won’t lose them and you will protect your hair from damage as well. Both chlorine and salt can be harsh on the hair so it’s best to use a clarifying shampoo at least once a week. The rubber goggles and the latex swim caps can cause hair breakage too. Before your swim, apply coconut oil on your hair just like you would apply conditioner. Next put on a spandex or lycra swim cap, then your goggles (replace the rubber goggle straps with bungee style) and finally place your wave appropriate latex or rubber swim cap over your goggles to keep them secure. 2. Oh, what to wear. If you want full coverage then go with a tri suit that tends to hold everything together and be the most flattering. A tri suit is like a swimsuit with shorts attached all in one piece. Some even have zippers in the front. Some have little pockets in the back but those can cause drag and slow you down swimming so those are only appropriate for the longer distance races. The tops on the two piece tri suits tend to ride up so unless you “want” to show off your 6 pack, that can be annoying. If you are lucky enough to “have to” wear a jog bra under your tri suit or tri top then here are my top recommendations. *My personal favorite comes in racer back and regular): Moving Comfort JUNO $39 - $65 www.brooksrunning.com/en_us/womens-juno-sports-bra/350071.html?kclickid=797e0f4e251a-4308-9d73-d238a3b03e66&gclid=Cj0KCQjw-DLBRCNARIsAFIwR26EEZd5LQXHJ641AGM8a5GPPz-nhJZFcSQAkhTt3hB5RDBTW9TnscaAmv6EALw_wcB&c It can be purchased at most running stores, online at Brooks and REI *Best sports bra for FULL support: Moving Comfort MAIA $58.00 www.brooksrunning.com/en_us/maia-sportsbra/350054451.0441D.html?CAWELAID=120170360000065701&CAGPSPN=pla&CAAGID=1642 4931506&CATCI=pla-305864694622&kclickid=797e0f4e-251a-4308-9d73d238a3b03e66&gclid=Cj0KCQjw--DLBRCNARIsAFIwR26c33zygdT65ZLxqUe1gzWX4ikgCl6aO3OHZ7vuoOHtTstsGpUZXkaAufbEALw_wcB Can be purchased at most running stores, online at Brooks and REI *And a darn good one: UnderArmour PROTEGEE Made for Me Racer Back Zipper Front Buy online approx $28.00 - $35.00 https://store.jacksonswarehouse.online/Detail_i576697 *And a good enough fair priced one is Champion Duo Dry From $19.95 online to $25.00 Kohls www.herroom.com/champion-1602-spot-comfort-max-support-molded-cup-sportsbra.shtml?utm_source=adv&utm_medium=search&utm_campaign=pla&utm_content=Chmp 01-1602&gclid=Cj0KCQjw--DLBRCNARIsAFIwR24of654YAoCG0VF1ZYFGWMvrKvyM27q8WsnGZba2KAXcrjArFZ9VEaAhCnEALw_wcB Always check TJ Maxx. I have found ALL of these bras at TJ Maxx at some point. And shop online for the best deals.

Some ladies just wear a racing style one piece or a two piece swim suits like TYR, Speedo, or Nike. This would be the least expensive option too and you can always find these brands at a great discount at TJ Maxx or Marshalls. Always rinse out your suit of the chlorine water or salt water ASAP as this will prolong the life of your suit. Oh, and a warning if you are wearing a swim suit, avoid doing the breast stroke if you are swimming with a man behind you. I’m just saying…… 3. You don’t want to feel this kind of burn. Try to shave 24 hours before your salt water swims as one can often feel an intense burn as you enter the salt water right after a shave. Laser hair removal is worth every penny when you think of all the time it saves you. 4. Saddle up. Get professionally fitted to optimize performance, comfort and efficiency. You want to be fitted so your weight is on your sit bones and not your pubis aka hoo-ha. When you purchase a new bike a professional fitting should always be included. If you buy a used bike, you can schedule a fitting at your local bike shop and trust me it’s worth the money. 5. A good chamois crème will help avoid chafing and saddles sores but if you get them a product called “Aquaphor” can help or apply the oil from a vitamin E capsule. You can get both in any grocery store. 6. No sausages. Splurge on high-quality cycling shorts (about $99-$150) a pair. In an effort to avoid the sausage effect on your thighs always select the cycling shorts that do not have the plastic grippers around the thighs. Trust me these are worth the extra money 7. Always a diva? Heart rate monitors can come in fun fashionable colors. If you use a heart rate monitor that requires you to wear a strap below your chest, apply coconut oil, olive oil, or “Aquaphor” on your sternum before you place the heart rate monitor on to avoid chafing. 8. Don’t be blinded by Triathlon. Never apply any sun block or cover up above your eyes. Protect your forehead with a hat or visor while running and wear a “Halo” on the bike under your helmet. The “Halo” has a “small rubber strip” that keeps the sweat from rolling into your eyes. No need to go all the way to heaven for your “Halo”. You can get your “Halo” at your favorite bike shop. 9. If you have long hair get a bike helmet with a pony tail slot. And I find a braid always keeps your ponytail from knotting. If it does tangle up then “The Wet Brush” is the best for getting those tangles out. 10. Is it that time of the month? When feeling under the weather for any reason, know that it’s scientifically proven that it’s best to exercise at low intensity 50-75%max HR or 50-75% of perceived maximum effort. It’s science. Exercise makes you feel better. You can often sweat it out, the increased circulation, & the endorphins you release will almost always make you feel better. 11. Mother nature calls. Always carry wipes, you never know when the port-o-let is out of paper or worse…… They also help with removing those body markings :0) It’s a good idea to buy the facial wipes (Burts Bees is my fav) and always immediately use one on your face after your workout in an effort to keep your skin clear. The last tip, I guess I lied, there are 12. 12. When training solo, always tell someone where you will be training (the exact route) how long you will be gone, and check in with them when you are finished. Or heck, just download the free app by Road ID. With this app you can designate a person to see where you physically are real time during training. As long as your phone is on it will track you for them. It’s way cool and free. You can contact USAT certified Coach Celia Dubey at www.runvie.com

Moving Through the middle Ages Lynn Gray, B.A., M.S. Our real age is determined largely by our biological and physiological ability to “move”. Exercise which involves full body movement such as walking, running, swimming, and cross training put us in a younger “biological age” bracket. Those of us who read the Race Place and other sports training magazines are infinitely in tune with their body’s ability to move quickly and efficiently. Likewise we are not real happy when we see aging signs such as inflexibility, aches and pains in our back and knees, widened hips and bloated stomach...need I go on? We sneer at these aging signs because they remind us of limitations of our ability to get things done; not to mention becoming fitter and faster. It is time to turn these health markers around. Our biological aging process can be held to a minimum if we intervene and change our physical fitness habits to include: #1. Lack of flexibility: Muscle movement such as running is central to get the larger muscles of the body strong and toned. Strong muscles need to become flexible so active movement can be had. Introduce yoga or swimming and you will increase both muscle flexibility and the collagen fibers which connect muscle to muscle. Furthermore, as we age our stride length decreases. A routine stretching regiment will increase stride length resulting in a more efficient gait. #2. Lose the flab - After 25 years of age our metabolic rates slows done at a rate of 1% per year. It takes nearly an hour on a routine basis of steady walking or running or a walk/run combination to tone muscle in the thighs, buttocks, and abdomen. The fat burning switch turns on after 35 minutes of vigorous movement in reshaping our larger muscle groups. The end result is firm muscles plus loss of body fat; both of which will give us a trimmer look. Don’t forget; calories do count. Recognize that overeating can reverse much of the benefits of steady movement. #3. Gaining or maintain cardio vascular health - By age 35 our maximal oxygen has already decreased by about 10%; and by 45 - 20%. Decrease this downward trend of aerobic capability by brisk walking, running, or swimming. Aerobic exercise requires much oxygen creating many changes. Our heart rate increases which make the stroke volume of our heart increase which then circulates oxygen in the blood to the muscles faster, all the while removing toxins from the cells at a rapid rate. Also continuous deep breathing decreases the shrinkage of lung tissues and increases the development of chest muscles needed to inhale and exhale. Increased oxygen intake stimulates activity in the brain which improves memory, focus, and gives a sense of calmness. #4. Heart disease is the #1 cause of death – In men, the risk for coronary heart disease increases starting at age 45. In women, the risk for coronary heart disease increases starting at age 55. The top health markers of who may get heart disease are those with high blood pressure, those who are overweight or obese, and most importantly, those who do not participate in sustained physical activity. Our arteries become less flexible with
age and can become clogged with cholesterol; both of which narrows the arteries and slows down blood flow to the heart. Walking and running open up the arteries and flush out the cholesterol due to increased circulation.

#5. Gain bone density - By age 35 we begin to lose more bone than we can make. The rate of loss is about 0.3 % per year. Both walking and running is weight bearing sustained exercises which increase bone density by stimulating the bone to grow. Both walking and running strengthens the muscles surrounding the spine which reduces the onset of muscle spasms-a common cause of back pain. Strong and toned muscles will help protect bones from breaking in the event of a fall. Importantly as we age up an additional weight training program is extremely beneficial especially if it is specific to the walking and running muscles. Both core and back strength are essential for good posture and balance; critical in any sport one engages in.
