Leave your watch, IPod, headphones (all your new Christmas gadgets) home as you attempt to estimate your finish time. The winners will be the runners that finish closest to their predicted time along the paved course of beautiful Old Tampa Bay. What the heck is a prediction run?

A prediction run is entirely different from other races that you’ve run in the past. Rather than finishing first or running the fastest, the object of a prediction run is to finish as close to the time as possible that you predict.

Watches, GPS timers and other timing devices exclude you from award eligibility.

A great way to wrap up your year of running by predicting your 2017 finish.

RACE LIMITS: 5K limited to 150 runners 10K limited to 350 runners START TIMES: The 10K starts promptly at 8:00am & we predict the 5K will start 5 minutes later.

COMMON RUNNING PAIN AND HOW TO RELIEVE IT Gene Ulishney, BS HPE, CPED, BOCPED Because the causes of running pain are misunderstood, runners just expect to have pain at some point, if not all the time. Generally speaking, what really seems strange though, with all the “advancements” in running shoe technology, the same numbers of runners are experiencing pain as did at the beginning of the running boom in the late1970s. Back then, the predominant complaints were knee pain and shin splints. Today, they are plantar fasciitis and knee pain. The types of injuries are different but overall not reduced. It may have something to do with midsoles going from a little too firm to a little too soft. It also has a lot to do with many running shoes falling behind when it comes to closely matching the natural biomechanics of the foot, as well as shoes that are misfit in stability level, size, width, or shape.

The majority of running pain is due either to either overpronation or oversupination misalignments.

Overuse injuries are not caused by just “using” a body part over and over again, but by using it in an atypical way, over and over again. Below are the most common pains resulting from both overpronation and oversupination. Once identified, recommendations can be made to more appropriately align the ankle for better function of the entire body, resulting in less misaligned “over use” wear and tear.

Typical pain due to overpronation (ankle falling inward) - usually on inside of leg and foot: Medial knee or knee in general, medial shin splints, medial ankle, Achilles tendon, Plantar fasciitis (heel or arch pain), bunion, blistering on inside ball of foot and/or big toe. Low back and internal hip area pain are also possible.

Recommended for the above - a more supportive and universally forefoot-flexible shoe with an appropriately supportive orthotic.

Typical pain due to oversupination (ankle falling outward) - usually on outside of leg and foot: Hip, lateral knee, lateral shin splints, outside ankle (including sprains), lateral foot, blistering on outside of foot or small toe, and lateral bunion. The best running stores should be able to discuss your issues and provide appropriate reasons for their shoe, fit, orthotic and sock recommendations. All play very important rolls in keeping runners and walkers pain-free. Expect them to work. A well-trained salesperson knows which shoes and foot care accessories are getting the best results. If your pain is not relieved in a short period of time, there is most likely something better for you. In my view, 90% of running pain does not have to happen or can be eliminated with more appropriate shoes, orthotics and socks, all available at the store. Your salesperson should be confident that he or she can fit you with the best products for your concerns. If their last words to you are “If they don’t work, just bring them back”, try another running store. The same goes if they haven’t been able to help you after multiple tries. It could take a couple of visits though to figure you out.

Keep in mind that if you are in pain you need a change. And, all running products are not created equal.

Like any consumer item, some just work better than others. If you insist on continuing with the same shoes or the same fit (while having pain), don’t expect a different result, and especially, don’t blame the store or salesperson.

Nutrition – The 4th Discipline As an athlete’s training and racing progress and distances get longer and more intense, nutrition becomes more and more of a factor in productivity and performance. Fueling before, during and after activity becomes crucial for performance and recovery.

Remember that every drop of sweat contains much more than water. Your body not only loses fluids but it expends salt, calories and electrolytes. To properly refuel the body the athlete must replace both the fluids and the nutrition continually.

One of the best ways to supplement is to add the nutrients into the water an athlete is drinking. This is a great way of adding consistently as you drink. Having the proper balance of calories, sodium and electrolytes mixed within the water we consume allows the body to properly fuel throughout the workout or race.

Everyone is completely different but a rule of thumb is a bottle (21-24 ounces of liquid) an hour. If the athlete also adds the amount of nutrition needed within the hour in the bottle then an accurate schedule of both water and nutrition can be monitored.

Calorie and sodium replacement is crucial for intense workouts and racing. If a deficit occurs it will directly affect performance and also recovery. “Bonking” is the loss of nutrients to fuel the body properly. So pairing with the proper nutrients for the athlete and the proper amount should keep the body functioning efficiently.

In a triathlon the ONLY of the 3 disciplines where the athlete has complete control of the product, amount and timing of nutrition is on the bike. You can drink or eat whatever or whenever you want. Pro triathlete Paul Matthews calls the bike portion his buffet. On the bike, complete control of nutrition sets up the run. The goal is to be completely hydrated and full of proper nutrition coming off the bike.

Unless the triathlete is carrying their own nutrition, the run is dictated by what is on the course and the frequency of the water stops. Coming off the bike with low stores of nutrition and hydration is like starting an auto race with a half tank of gas. Chances of disaster.

What to use? This is where qualified and knowledgeable people can help. Ask questions. Talk to other athletes. Ask coaches. Talk to your bike shop. Research. Look at the back label of the different powder options. There are major differences from brand to brand. Try out different ones to see what is best for you. Taste is important. If you don’t like the flavor it is less likely you will continue to drink.

Steps to take if you or a friend is struck by a motor vehicle while on your bicycle

Brian is a practicing attorney, specializing in personal injury cases with a subspecialty representing cyclists in bike/auto accidents. He is a lifelong resident of St. Petersburg, and has been active, as both a participant and race manager for in excess of thirty years. He has worked on all phases of race production, including being one of the early race directors of St. Anthony’s Triathlon; announces many races on the West Coast of Florida, and served the Florida Region on the National Board of Directors for USATriathlon for six years, and is the Past President of that Organization.

He has two daughters (Shana Harrington and Brianne Gaal), two son’s in law (Scott Lowery and Marty Gaal) , and one granddaughter (Haileigh Houser) who are active triathletes. He brings this experience to our races as our race announcer.

1. Take photos: of your bike, of the vehicle, of the location prior to movement, of the vehicle’s license tag, of other eyewitness/fellow cyclists, so you don’t forget who was there. And quickly transfer these photos to the cloud or other safe place; leaving only on your phone makes them safe only until you lose or destroy the phone, don’t take this risk.

2. Seek immediate medical attention; even if not transported to an ER, make immediate plans to be seen by a doctor, not your primary care doctor, who will run the other way as soon as they hear it’s an accident case. Under Florida law, understand two things: first, when on your bike and struck by a motor vehicle, your own auto insurance comes into play, including the portion that pays your medical bills (PIP), even if the driver was at fault, and potentially your uninsured/underinsured motorists’ coverage, which if you’ve read my prior articles, you understand is mandatory for your safety on a bike to carry; and second, that under Florida law, if you do not see a doctor and have your injury declared and EMC (emergency medical condition) within fourteen days of date of accident, thereafter your auto PIP will only pay a maximum of $2,500, not the $10,000 you purchased under your PIP coverage for medical care. Is that fair? No! Is it the law? Yes!

3. DO NOT give a recorded statement to the at fault party’s insurance rep/ adjuster without me, or another attorney looking out for you present and participating. It’s a one sided game: they always want you to give a recorded statement, but NEVER allow their insured to give one to us. You do have an obligation to communicate with your own carrier, but even then, I always advise your attorney be on that call as well.

4. DO NOT post any information about your accident or your injuries and care on social media. You must assume anything you say will be a part of the at fault party’s file on you. Many of my athlete clients make the mistake of talking about future races, how great they are healing, neither of which may in reality come to pass, but once posted, it’s there for them to use against you. We are all positive self motivators, and believe if we say something long and often enough, it will be reality. Don’t let such “positive speak” be the death knell of your legitimate injury claim.

This type information can be invaluable to you or your fellow athlete training partners. Make a copy of this article and keep in your fanny pack; share with your friends. If you or they need it, this information can make the difference whether or not you will be able to protect yourself from the reckless drivers we see on the road daily.

Outside knee pain keeping you from the race?

A commonly missed diagnosis of outside, or lateral, knee pain is

TFL syndrome.

What is TFL syndrome?  Tensor Fascia Lata is a muscle located at the hip that connects to the Iliotibial Band (IT Band) outside the knee.  Symptoms are experienced at the lateral aspect of the knee and can be misdiagnosed as an injury with the lateral collateral ligament or IT Band.  The cause of this pain is tightness of the Tensor Fascia Lata causing a pull on the IT Band.

What is the treatment?

LIABILITY RELEASE: In consideration of the acceptance of my entry in the 2018-Kiwanis Adventure Runs ("the Run"), I, for myself, my heirs, executors and assigns, do hereby release and discharge The Kiwanis Club of Dunedin, Inc., Dunedin Kiwanis Foundation, Inc., Kiwanis International, Florida Kiwanis, The Florida State Board of Trustees of the Internal Improvement Trust Fund, Florida Department of Environmental Protection, Florida Division of Recreation and Parks, all Run officials, Run sponsors, Run volunteers, and their respective executors, administrators, successors and assigns (hereinafter collectively called the "Releasees"), from all liability whatsoever, whether foreseen or unforeseen, from any and all claims, damages, bodily injury, property damage or death arising out of or in the course of my participation in the Run including, but not limited to, any injuries suffered by me based on the negligence of the Releasees. I have full knowledge of the risks involved in this Run including, but not limited to, falls, contact with other participants, effects of weather, course obstacles, wildlife, water craft, drowning, broken bones, sprains, etc., and I am medically fit to participate. In the event any claim against Releasees is adjudicated to be enforceable despite the language of this release, I agree that any recovery shall be limited to the available insurance coverage insuring the Releasees.
