THE RIGHT SHOE FOR BOTH FEET
D
ealing with the general public can be quite interesting especially if you are dealing with their feet. I find that there are many things in common that might help the average person find a better shoe for his/her walking and running needs. Let me give you some “rules to go by” when you are looking for a performance shoe.
this size increase is, as you exercise your feet swell up a bit and you need to anticipate that. You also want to feel like you can “play the piano” with your toes inside the front part of the shoe called the toe box. The shoe should also fit snuggly on your heel. The shoe should have about a “thumb nail” distance from where your longest toe is and the end of the shoe, to address the swelling foot issue and to avoid black toenails.
First, let me tell you what I mean by a performance shoe. A performance shoe is a shoe that you buy because you need a shoe to do a specific job whether running/ walking or just standing on your feet all day. You must find a shoe that does the job and not buy a shoe because you like the color or style
Now that you have some good basic information about your foot and the type of shoe you might want, go to a store that stocks a good selection of different performance shoe manufacturers. There are a lot of good shoes out there and price doesn’t always dictate what is best for your foot. You should find a salesperson who can at least measure your foot and tell you the difference between a stability shoe and a neutral shoe. Try some styles on and go out of the store (if allowed, no shoplifting please) and run or walk in the shoe. There is very little “break in” with performance shoes so what the shoes feel like in the store is what they will feel like at home.
Performance running/walking shoes come in three basic categories: stability, cushioned or neutral and motion control. Now you want to find out what kind of foot you have so you can match your running or walking characteristics to a shoe that best works with your feet. You need to take off your shoes and have someone watch you walk to see if your feet are rolling in (pronating) or rolling out (supanating). If you are rolling in, you generally need a stability shoe. If you are rolling out, you generally need a neutral or cushion shoe. If you have flat feet generally you should be looking for a motion control shoe.Width should also be a consideration, most people can fit into the standard width shoe which is “B” width for women and “D” width for men. Most athletic shoe companies are making performance shoes in width now days so find a shoe that comfortable on you foot for both length and width.
Congratulations, now hopefully, you have shoes that feel great and let you enjoy all the benefits of the exercise your body needs. Remember though, the life of the shoe is only 300 to 500 miles or six months whichever comes first. This article was written by Bill Davison who owns and operates The Running Center.
Let me address some other things you should have in mind when you are going through this “find the right shoe process”. Most running/walking shoes are going to be one full size bigger than your regular dress shoe. The reason for

Elements of Fitness The Power of Play—and Friends! At FITniche, we believe the past holds the keys to your success for getting and staying motivated as a runner. Why? fi When we were kids we engaged in fitness pursuits, particularly running, as often as we could and we seldom had to search for motivation. In fact many of us had to be scolded to quit working out and come inside for lunch or dinner. It was called play back then, and it enabled us to use our bodies in the ways our bodies were designed to be used: chasing, climbing, laughing, swimming, pursuing adventure on our own and with friends…
Play is More Fun with Friends! Yesterday morning before breakfast, my 3 year-old daughter said, "I want to go play Out-Side!" She was already dressed, so I opened the back door and said, "Sure, honey. Go play while I finish making your oatmeal." She walked out, stood on the porch for 4 or 5 seconds and then promptly marched back in. "No, I want YOU to play outside too." I immediately recognized my mistake. Almost everything is more fun with friends. We're wired that way. Our earliest experiences with running and fitness were the play we engaged in-with friends, usually. So it is no surprise that some our best running and fitness experiences today occur with friends too. We really are designed to be better together. For instance, I can swim on my own any day of the week, and often do, but I swim faster, further and have way more fun when I meet my buddies down at the pool. We joke around, discuss some politics, push each other through sets, and creatively develop entire workouts on the fly. Friends make a big difference in our ability to be successful in most situations. It's why our weekly pub runs are so beloved by the community, and it's a key to making your runs more fun too-because there's still a little kid in each of us just itching to get outside and go play with our friends! Find your fit, reclaim your fun! Rich and Your Friends at FITniche
The Rules 1) As kids, most of us didn’t just play in the woods by ourselves or run through the sprinklers alone. Whenever we could, we played with friends because humans have a universal need to be involved with each other. So find or make friends to work out with. 2) Start with an existing group. Try Run Tampa, one of the largest and most fun-oriented running groups in the bay, or your local running club. Or come out to one of FITniche’s Pub Runs. 3) Keep in mind that the people with whom we surround ourselves in our lives bend us in directions we're often not even aware of. Seeking out and surrounding yourself with other people who value their fitness and wellbeing ensures that at least a portion of your environment is filled with people trying to bend you in the same direction you want to go.
Heard about Club FITniche yet? It’s pretty fun too! Join and save $20 on ALL shoes for 2 years! Stop in an ask a crew member about additional benefits or go to www.fitniche.com now!

YOUR RUNNING SHOES – FRIEND OR FOE? Gene Ulishney, BSHPE, CPED, BOCPED
More than 8 out of 10 runners experience running pain or injury during their running career, sometimes chronic. This hasn’t changed in 40 years. You would think, with all the advances in materials and shoe construction over the years that this would not be the case. But, sadly for those who choose running as their sport, it is. The reasons are varied, but I’ll cover the most predominant, below. Poor fit is among the most common causes of running pain. Close to 80% are wearing running shoes that are either too short, too narrow or the wrong shape for their feet. Your feet should be analyzed each time you buy new shoes. There are two constants in running – feet and shoes change. Chances are, you need a larger size. So don’t beat up your salesperson for suggesting it, he or she is only the messenger…and trying to help. The wrong stability level for the runner’s needs continues to be a major source of pain. What we are talking about here is alignment, including alignment of the ankle as well as the knee. When joints are aligned, aches and pains usually do not appear because the body is working properly. The body will always take the path of least resistance to maintain its center of gravity. This means that if one joint is out of alignment, the next one or more above it must counter balance the original movement. It’s just what the body does naturally. But, repeat it too many times (as with running), and eventually, some structure of the body will suffer enough to become a nagging issue or serious problem. Getting caught up in the latest fad is also a common source of running pain. One reason is that companies so badly want to be first-to-market with the latest “cutting edge” technology, that it takes precedence over testing and validating, not to mention common sense. Minimal shoes with little or no cushioning and forefoot running shoes are now all but gone. And, it will be interesting to see how the recent hyper-cushioned and hyper-bouncy footwear will continue to be received. I like to go back to nature – how do I feel and how does the body respond when running barefoot on grass or sand? It is only how we’ve done it for tens of thousands of years. Finally, footwear is not immune to be a cause of running pain. The foot and body work best without shoes, on natural terrain. When shoes are added due to our hard, flat and unyielding modern surfaces, levers are created to which the body must adapt. Basically, levers cause malalignment, and can begin at heel contact and not end until toe-off. How much a running shoe manufacturer deals with reducing levers in their shoes is directly proportional to the number of problems that runners may or may not have with their shoes…and how their shoes are accepted in the marketplace. Currently, and for the past number of years, the top three selling brands in specialty running have been #1, Brooks, #2, Asics, and #3, Saucony. If you have running pain, are injured, or don’t want to be, consider the above options, in that order. Some companies just spend much more time making a safer and more functional product. Also, when considering your equipment, keep two things in mind: all running shoes are not created equal; and, if you’re in pain, you need a change. Happy and safe running…

RESPECT HAS TO GO BOTH WAYS BETWEEN CYCLISTS AND MOTORISTS We triathletes and cyclists seem to have a never ending war with motorists. Motorists hate us, and, frankly, many cyclists disrespect motorists, sometimes unintentionally. If we want to survive on the same roads, both have to reach accommodation with the reality that the other has a right to be on the same road at the same time. What follows is a basic list of steps that can show how each can be respectful of the other, while at the same time avoid the carnage that then requires my legal skills. Never yet met a client who loved the fact they needed my legal help as a result of a run in with a motorist.
Brian is a practicing attorney, specializing in personal injury cases with a subspecialty representing cyclists in bike/auto accidents. He is a lifelong resident of St. Petersburg, and has been active, as both a participant and race manager for in excess of thirty years. He has worked on all phases of race production, including being one of the early race directors of St. Anthony’s Triathlon; announces many races on the West Coast of Florida, and served the Florida Region on the National Board of Directors for USATriathlon for six years, and is the Past President of that Organization. He has two daughters (Shana Harrington and Brianne Gaal), two son’s in law (Scott Lowery and Marty Gaal) , and one granddaughter (Haileigh Houser) who are active triathletes. He brings this experience to our races as our race announcer.
March /April
Respect that can and should be shown by a motorist to cyclists: 1. Cyclists have a legal right to be on the road. Be prepared to share the road with each other. 2. Know the laws as they pertain to cyclists: the three foot rule; what Sharrows are and what they mean. I suspect only a minority of cyclists know what they are either. they are two short arrows with a cyclist painted in the road to denote a lane too narrow to safely allow both a vehicle and a bicycle on the road together. A sharrow gives the cyclist the right to “take the lane” by riding in the center of the lane; the motorist must not try to pass. 3. Remember, these cyclists dressed in funny attire are not your enemy; in fact, they are Mothers, Fathers, children, and friends, as well as in almost all cases, drivers themselves. They are also largely defenseless in any crash with a motor vehicle. Respect their right to be on the road. 4. Always try to make eye contact when near a cyclist; the better the eye contact, the less likely and accident. 5. Wherever possible, yield to the cyclist; such action creates a safer environment, and you will find cyclists doing the same for you. Respect than can and should be shown by a cyclist to a motorist: 1. Whenever at a traffic control device, where a motorist is also there, DON’T run or roll the light or stop sign. When you do, you’ve made an enemy. Remember, when I’m representing you in a jury trial as a result of injuries you sustained when struck by a vehicle, ALL jurors are drivers (picked from driver’s license rolls). No cyclist will be on your jury. That driver who saw you roll the intersection could be sitting on your jury! 2. Don’t swarm a vehicle when approaching a controlled intersection; stop behind the vehicle; swarming terrifies drivers; makes them very nervous of us, and, again, we’ve just made an enemy. Waiting behind the will cost you little or no time, but will make riding safer for us all. 3. Whenever possible, make eye contact with a driver, it can save your life. Be friendly, give a wave to a driver, talk with them when stopped, demonstrate you’re a good person. You will have just made a friend instead of another driver who hates cyclists. 4. Know the law as it applies to cyclists. In Florida, we have the same RIGHTS and the same RESPONSIBILITIES as a driver. If you run a traffic control device, and you get a ticket, you are treated the same as a motorist; no hedging because we have to take our shoes out of our clip on pedals when we stop; or, we were near the back of a line of bicycles, so shouldn’t we be given some slack. Nope, you won’t win that argument. If we set the example for motorists, we will reap the benefit. We will never win over the extremist, but with some positive interaction, we may one day be an accepted part of the road. Be safe out there.

FL RacePlace Magazine Editor Trains with EWOT – Exercise with O2 Therapy On a Pathway to Maximizing Running Potential: Interview with Joe Fernandez Shoshanah Vaughn How were you first introduced to EWOT? Years ago when I was training for the Jacksonville Marathon, I injured my hamstring and was told it would take 2 months to heal, but I only had 3 weeks before my race. Since I needed to speed up my recovery time, I discovered EWOT (Exercise with Oxygen Therapy) from a Sports Physical Therapist.
“You learn to exercise with maximum effort without any tiredness.”
How did you benefit from EWOT? Well, I ran the Jacksonville Marathon with a healed hamstring and ran my fastest time ever. EWOT gave me higher performance levels, quicker recovery, increased strength and endurance, and more energy. That’s great! So, how did you feel immediately after you completed the marathon? Surprisingly refreshed, not tired, and like I was ready for my next hard effort. I have been doing EWOT ever since! You learn to exercise with maximum effort without any tiredness, all while gaining pure oxygen. It’s kinda like feeding your muscles. How often should I do EWOT and how long each time? I did it 3-4 times per week. You warm up for 5 minutes, EWOT is 10 minutes of working hard, and then you cool down for 5 minutes. I had my fastest marathon time after 3 weeks. You can even use EWOT in conjunction with your current training program, so the plan depends on your other program.

EWOT Training Session at Physical Chiropractic of Tampa Bay 813-207-5027
Exercising with Oxygen Therapy aggressively allows you to breathe 60 LPM of pure oxygen during strenuous exercise. It forces oxygen in your system to allow the muscles to keep going. Joe Fernandez (the Editor of Florida RacePlace Magazine) is among many others who benefit from EWOT at Physical Chiropractic of Tampa Bay. In addition to physical performance, EWOT is under research for cancer treatment and anti-aging. Joe continues his EWOT at Physical Chiropractic of Tampa Bay where they aim to treat all patients like a professional athlete. Their approach comes with a sense of urgency in getting patients back on the field in the quickest manner possible. EWOT is one of several ways Dr. Tommy Rhee speeds up his patients’ overall recovery/healing time. 1155 S Dale Mabry Hwy #8 Tampa, FL. 33629 | physicalchiro.com

RACE COURSE DISTANCE (Are you getting what you’re paying for?) There are different methods that race organizers use to lay out and measure a road race course. And as most runners know, not all courses are as billed. For a wide range of reasons Race directors, event organizers and race participants should all be concerned about run course accuracy.
METHODS COMMONLY USED TO MEASURE RACE COURSES THE BEST & THE REST (or the Good, the OK, the Not So Good) • • • • •
USATF Certification Measuring Wheel Global Positioning Systems (GPS) Bike and Car Odometers Pedometers
THE BEST - USATF Course Certification USATF is the official certifying body of running courses in the United States. The USATF certifying process assures that the course is the exact length as advertised. USATF Certification assures runners that times will be based on a properly measured distance. Many race directors don’t know the difference between “Sanctioning” and “Certifying” a race. Race sanctioning is an agreement between the event and USATF to follow certain criteria, offer insurance, and receive “official” standing with USATF. An event that is sanctioned may or may not have a certified course. It is important for runners to know this, so they don’t assume the course is also certified. Certifying the route deals with the distance of the route, making sure it is accurate by using the Calibrated Bicycle Method of measuring, the only standard method used around the world and recognized by USATF. EDM (Electronic Distance Measuring) may only be used by a qualified surveyor, and is usually cost prohibitive for any race, so it will not be included in this discussion. As long as there are no changes to, or construction on the course, USATF certifications are good for 10 years. Records set on a USATF Certified Course at events that are also sanctioned with USATF, will be official, pending validation by USATF. Officially certified courses are also recognized by the Road Runners Club of America (RRCA). Measurement is done using a "Jones Counter” equipped bicycle. The Jones Counter is calibrated on the day of the measurement, both before and after the measurement. This assures that the course is accurate. If your course is more of a cross country race, then it will not qualify for a certification but can be accurately measured for the day of the race. Examples of this are beach races, races that include a large piece of course over grass terrain like on a golf course, undefined trails, or shifting gravel or dirt roads.
Why Should Race Organizers Want A Certified Course & Why Should Runners Care? • • • • •
A record set on a certified course will be official, pending validation by USATF. Running on a certified course is extremely important to elite and other accomplished runners, particularly when course records and personal bests come into play. Most runners like to compare performances in order to gauge personal progress. Comparisons are difficult if length is suspect from course to course. Runners who pay an entry fee for a road race have a right to a properly measured course. Average runners and walkers want to be assured that they are getting what they are paying for when they sign up for a race and that the course is exactly as advertised. Races should use the course certification number to advertise on their website, allowing runners to download the map and become familiar with the course before they run it.

How to get your course certified
The easiest way to have your course certified is to hire someone who is already skilled at measuring for USATF certification. Prices vary according to each measurer’s pay scale, but be prepared to spend $400 to $500 for a typical 5k. You can measure your course yourself if you are sufficiently motivated and willing to devote the time and attention that it requires. A new measurer should be willing to invest about $400 in equipment and 30 hours or more of their time for a 5k. In either case, you will need to contact the USATF Regional Certifier for your state. This person can refer you to qualified measurers that you might hire. Or, if you choose to measure the course yourself, the Certifier can provide guidance to help you through the process. The USATF Course Measurement manual can be downloaded in PDF format from USATF.org. And there is an active blog on measuring with the Road Racing Technical Council at RRTC.net. When you are finished with the course measurement you will need to send the required paperwork to your state Certifier with a fee of $30.
THE REST – Uncertified Courses If You Choose To Measure Your Own (Uncertified) Course… Some first year event organizers often choose not to have their course certified. If you decide not to go the certification route there are a number of things to keep in mind. 1). Courses should not be measured using: * Car or Bike odometer: They are not calibrated, and a car cannot ride the “Shortest Possible Route”. * Global Positioning System: a GPS can, to a degree, be a good tool for verifying course accuracy, but they can also be unreliable because of variations due to uneven terrain, trees, buildings, tunnels and other impediments. Please refer to the USATF website for the official statement regarding GPS. This is a good source for race directors who are constantly under the barrage of questions and comments about their course not being accurate as per a runner’s GPS. * Pedometer: Once again, not calibrated. * Any other uncalibrated device. 2). If you do not have access to and experience with a “Jones Counter” and you want an accurate course (but not certified) then a Measuring Wheel would be your next best bet. 3). Measure the “Shortest Possible Route” on the course. Generally accepted practice requires that the wheel be one foot from the curb and measurements be completed along tangential lines.
In Summary • •
• • •
For the best results hire an experienced USATF Certifier to measure your course and submit the paperwork for certification. A certified course is good for 10 years. If you are motivated, have extra time on your hands, have a Jones Counter, you can measure and are prepared to go through the learning curve, you can measure the course yourself for certification. Be sure to contact your state certifier for step by step procedures on not only how to measure the course but also for what is required on the many pages of paperwork. If you are not concerned about course certification but still want an accurate course you can use a Jones Counter to measure the course and skip the paper work to USATF. A Measuring Wheel will usually get you very close to your required distance, just be aware there will still be some minor inaccuracies, regardless of how precise you think your measuring is. Never use any kind of Odometer, GPS, Pedometer or any other uncalibrated device to measure your course.
For more information on certifying your course in the state of Florida, you may contact Toni Youngman, USATF Florida Certifier, IAAF Grade “A” Measurer, RRTC Education and Training Chair, and RRTC Secretary. She can be reached at 407-619-2797 or toni@runzamok.net. For additional specific and detailed information on Course Certification, visit the USATF website, www.usatf.org.
