ANZEIGER EVENT AND COVER PHOTOS HOW TO’S EVENT PHOTOS • Photos can be vertical or horizontal. • When shooting, there should be a comfortable margin around all edges of the focal point (most often, a car). Do NOT crop! We will crop your photo to the best proportion for the page. Photos with the edge of a car clipped off is the most common photo error. COVER PHOTOS • The cover “bleeds” off the edges, leave a good margin
on every side of the focal point (most often, a car) • Make sure there is nothing significant in the masthead area. Vertical photos are best for cover photo options. ALL PHOTOS • Shoot and send the highest resolution possible. • Avoid capturing unwanted reflections or distracting backgrounds. • All people in the image should be facing the camera.
Send an email to anzeigereditor@oregonpca.org for directions to post your pictures.

ere’s a variation on the question “If a tree falls in the woods and there’s nobody around to hear it, does it really make any
sound?”
Hemmings reports that a motorist in Stillwater, Minnesota, was stopped recently and cited for having an excessively loud exhaust. The fly in that particular ointment was that the car in question was a Dodge Charger Daytona EV. Electric vehicles, of course, have no exhaust, no muffler or a need for one. Most EVs, in fact, are so quiet that the Feds want their manufacturers to add a synthetic engine sound to alert pedestrians. Daytona EVs do in fact have what’s called a “Fratzonic Chambered Exhaust system”, an advanced speaker system that simulates a powerful V8 engine sound. Drivers can control the intensity of the sound, from a quiet “Stealth Mode” to a loud “Track Mode,” with options to turn the system off entirely. Which mode the driver had his Daytona EV’s system set to is unknown, says Hemmings, but it clearly wasn’t silent. The Feds, Then, the November 9, 1998 issue of Fortune carried a full-page, full-color ad for Sony’s new VAIO 505 desktop computer. It’s what we now call a “comparo” against

the Porsche 996. There’s a blue 996 shown on the computer screen, and the ad playfully stacks up such features of each as weight, power, speed, range, and storage capacity. Finally, I had saved a little card from an unknown source that asks “In the year 2018,” will there be “Private vehicles guided along a computer-controlled road system?” It’s illustrated with the same little red SC Speedster toy mentioned earlier. I have no idea who sponsored that one. Two-plus decades on, Porsches are still popping up in print and television ads because they exemplify high performance and quality. Currently, a gleaming goldwrapped Turbo Cabriolet makes a brief appearance in

O
regon Region’s Northwest Passage tour is a gift that you give yourself: It is one of the best things I have ever done. As a first time
participant, my conclusion is that everyone who possibly can should experience it. I was born and raised in Oregon, yet had never made it over to eastern Washington, into Idaho and on to Montana where the tour went this September. The scenery was spectacular, it was delightful developing friendships, driving our incredible cars, learning from each other, laughing often and bonding as a group. Since our tour was in the fall, we admired the leaves turning. Crops had been harvested, leaving the golden stubble glowing yellow against the blue, or gray, sky - the contrast was stunning. There was a perpetual haze from wildfire smoke. On our way into

Montana, we saw a helicopter trailing a bucket of water to extinguish a nearby fire. The landscapes were diverse, from high desert to vast grain fields, rocky cliffs in canyons along rivers and streams, lakes (some with dams), tiny towns to medium-sized cities. It’s refreshing to get out and recall what a tremendous country we live in. There were many expired deer along the sides of the road (thank goodness not because of any of us), with live ones in meadows. I noticed a herd of elk, including a bull with a massive rack. Birds of prey soared above the fields, flocks of wild turkeys lurked dangerously close to the road. As we crawled through small towns the locals often waved from porches, the side of the road or their vehicles. At rest stops, and along the roads, people would take videos of our cars; we must have been a spectacle. The

SPECIAL SECTION: NORTHWEST PASSAGE highlight was a lunch at a county fairground prepared by locals which was unexpected and delicious. Fortunately, our tour members experienced no accidents or tickets. Two windshields suffered rock chips (including mine, but I would still do it all over again). I appreciated the way that Northwest Passengers chipped in (pun intended) with their advice and experience with getting windshields replaced. This is another advantage of participating - learning from others about our cars and life in general. Club members are generous with their knowledge and expertise. It was obvious how much planning, care and thought went into the tour and we are grateful to the committee members for their work and commitment to our enjoyment. It was flawless, as far as I could tell. There is a place for everyone, whether you want to drive slowly or fast, with a newer or mature Porsche, or even another brand. If you’re new to the club, a long-time member, drive solo or as a couple, all are welcomed and included. Each tour is its own adventure, and is so much fun that some go on the spring and fall versions. I urge you to plan now for the 2026 tour, or tours - you’ll be glad you did! n

t was just about the perfect day. Our small-ish midweek group of 18 (divided into two groups of nine cars), met at Ava’s in Progress Ridge September 23 for a driver’s meeting,
and then we were off! While parts of this route were familiar to some of us, Mark McGirr (tour organizer) stitched together some old favorite roads with some new additions, creating a fresh new route to enjoy. After going up and over Bald Peak, we stopped and regrouped at McMenamin’s Grand Lodge in Forest Grove, en route to our next rest stop in Vernonia. From there, the roads stay smooth but get twisty! Our group reveled in the almost complete lack of traffic on Highway 202 as we wound our way to the Jewell Elk Refuge, stopping for the last time before enjoying the best part of the route: tight twisties along the Nehalem River, then onto a great branch off our usual Young’s Bay route, following fantastic curves to lunch in Gearhart. Though one of our members was sidelined with an engine issue, all agreed that the fantastic roads, warm-but-not-hot weather, and minimal traffic made this a perfect day! Kudos to Mark for putting together a great route that will live on for future drives! n

Oktoberfest I sing the roads of autumn, the blaze of crimson and gold spilling across Bald Peak. Engines in chorus, many were topless convertibles catching the last warmth of the year. Once an SUV caravan, now all models welcome, the fellowship greater than the badge. At Bald Peak we met the Alfa Club, Randi Leadbetter greeting old friends, cars like people merging well, each distinct, yet one road. At journey’s end, pretzels, brats, potato salad, and beer, but more than the feast the mingling of spirits, new friends found, our inclusive drive celebrated.

hat’s more enjoyable than a leisurely drive to check out many of western Oregon’s fine old covered bridges? We met at the
Fred Meyer Wilsonville parking lot in time to take in organizer Mike Newby’s drivers’ meeting at 8:45 AM on October 4. At 9, the first of three groups headed out in a light drizzle - Hey, it’s Oregon – so convertible tops were up. The route included a nice mix of fun twisties and seven of Oregon’s beautiful historic bridges, several of

which we stopped at for photos. We arrived at Roaring River County Park for a picnic lunch under a pergola. After lunch we headed north toward Mt. Angel with the final stop being the Benedictine Brewery. A great day for all, thanks to Mike’s efforts.n
