OBOV: Our Mission in Pictures 2019

ONE BALL ONE VILLAGE

The leaders, volunteers and supporters of One Ball One Village are following God's call to reach the "least of these" with clean water and the Good News of Jesus Christ. On the pages that follow, you will see images and stories of the miracles in which God has allowed us to play a small part over the past year.

“Then the King will say to those on his right, ‘Come, you who are blessed by my Father; take your inheritance, the kingdom prepared for you since the creation of the world. For I was hungry and you gave me something to eat, I was thirsty and you gave me something to drink, I was a stranger and you invited me in, I needed clothes and you clothed me, I was sick and you looked after me, I was in prison and you came to visit me.’

ABOVE: The "good work" of OBOV starts by spreading the Good News of Jesus Christ. Written in the native language of that country, we install a plaque at each water system site, that includes an inscription from John 4: 13-14 that reads: Jesus answered, “Everyone who drinks this water will be thirsty again, but whoever drinks the water I give them will never thirst. Indeed, the water I give them will become in them a spring of water welling up to eternal life.”

One Ball One Village is so thankful to have such an amazing team of volunteers, in-country partners and donors who are all working together to answer God's call. Here are just a few of the highlights from the past year: 1. In-Country Leadership. OBOV is an all-volunteer organization and we simply could not accomplish God's calling without the diligent leadership of Makendy Paul, Isaiah Lapointe and Loubert Turenne (Haiti), David and Albina Albizures (Guatemala), Carlos Rosario and Lolin Peralta (the DR) and Mario Montona (Cuba). Our ministry is expanding quickly because of these selfless followers of God. 2. 200 Total Water Systems Completed in 11 Countries.

Contaminated water is the #1 health problem in the world.

In just seven years, God has allowed us to impact the lives of thousands of people with the gift of clean water, coupled with the living water of Jesus Christ.

3. Disaster Relief in the Bahamas. Hurricane Dorian was one of the most powerful and catastrophic storms on record. Although OBOV does not actively work there, we were able to partner with Missionary Flights International to send food and supplies to aid the relief efforts. The generosity of OBOV supporters made this all possible.

4. Sustainability and Logistics. 200 water systems in service means that OBOV's first job each year is water system maintenance. Through our partners and shipping channels, OBOV's supply chain continues to expand.

5. Partnerships. OBOV continues to expand its strategic partnership with other organizations in Haiti, Guatemala, Mexico and the Dominican Republic.

6. Ministry Growth in Medical Missions. OBOV now has a fully functioning, quarterly medical outreach in Guatemala as well as an annual partnership with Hope & Health Project and USF's Project World Health to provide medical outreach in the Dominican Republic.

7. Spreading the Good News of Jesus Christ. As you will see on the pages that follow, every water system that is installed/maintained and every team that travels represents an opportunity for OBOV members to share their faith in Christ. Our primary focus when installing water filtration systems is that the living water of Jesus Christ be shared when the clean water is being distributed.

Water Is Life!

Human survival depends on access to clean water. According to the United Nations, 2.1 billion people worldwide lack access to safe drinking water. Water scarcity aects 4 out of 10 people on the planet. 1.5 million children die every year due to reasons associated with contaminated water.

Unsafe water and poor sanitation is now the leading cause of child mortality worldwide! For OBOV, we see access to safe water as the #1 health priority for communities in the developing world.

Since 2012, OBOV has been called to complete 200 water projects located in places like Haiti, The Dominican Republic, Guatemala, Cuba, Tanzania, and Mexico. We have also provided water systems in support of missionaries in other countries like Paraguay, Honduras, Guyana and Togo.

OBOV water systems have also been deployed following Hurricanes Matthew (Haiti/Cuba), Maria (Puerto Rico) and Dorian (Bahamas).

And many of the water projects go beyond the ubiquitous blue water systems to include well drilling, submersible pump installations and maintenance, clean water storage tanks, solar powered systems and the construction of community water stations serving thousands.

One of the more complicated water systems for the May trip to Haiti was the installation at the Lacey Lee School. Team OBOV" installed a submersible pump inside the concrete cistern (located immediately beneath the water system pictured). The pump is powered by a solar panel on the roof and pumps water through the water system to the clean water storage tank on the roof. Clean water ows via gravity to the kitchen building for use by the children.

In 2018, the OBOV team of Troy Muilenburg and Bob Brown traveled Antorcha in Tijuana, Mexico and installed a water system for Pastor Manuel and his wife Judith.

This September, Jody and Laurie got to visit the church and see the water system in action! During the visit, they met with the leaders of Kingdom Builders, the church-building organization in Mexico that constructed Pastor Manny's church.

Kingdom Builders could be a new OBOV strategic partner in coming years.

Water System Sustainability: Our "A-Team" Sharing the love of Christ with our neighbors in need means a continued focus on sustainability. The OBOV team featured here are the real heroes, performing this work month in and month out all year long. We are blessed to have such a dedicated group including David and Albina (Guatemala), Makendy, Isaiah and Loubert (Haiti), Lolin and Carlos (DR) and Mayito (Cuba) who are committed to keeping these systems operating properly. The logistical challenges of supplying replacement ďŹ lters and parts for nearly 200 systems grows each year and your support enables us to ensure that each water system remains a blessing for the churches, schools, orphanages, hospitals and communities they serve.

Medical Outreach: Guatemala and Dominican Republic In 2018, OBOV began it's first medical outreach in Guatemala. It all started during the disaster relief efforts by the OBOV team in June 2018 after the eruption of Fuego Volcano. David and Albina's brother Benja, who is a medical doctor, joined the OBOV team and felt a strong calling afterward to continue helping his fellow Guatemalans in need.

Benja, David, Albina and our dear partner Miguel Sofoifa with the Church of God denomination in Guatemala, spent many months planning the first outreach. Benja got the medical supplies donated and arranged for a team of Guatemalan medical doctors and dentists to donate their time while David, Albina and Miguel Sofoifa planned the logistics of getting the medical team to the site, which was six hours away in Huehuetenango, and setting up the location and promotion of the event.

The team has successfully completed 10 medical outreaches since 2018, serving over 5,500 people in need who did not have access to medical care. At each medical outreach, not only is a team of medical professionals available to diagnose and treat medical issues, but there is also a large Vacation Bible Study (VBS) team that is ministering to the children and families while they wait to see the medical professionals. The dental team not only fixes cavities and completes extractions, but they provide fluoride treatments as needed. Immunizations and anti-parasitic medication are also given to every child at each outreach, as well as a special gift before they leave.

These medical outreaches are another way OBOV is able to share the gospel of Jesus while caring for communities in need! We are now able to provide clean water and medical services to communities that otherwise would not have access to these basic life-saving necessities.

God also blessed OBOV with a partnership with Hope & Health Project ("HHP") and good friend Dr. Jose Colon. HHP, along with USF's Project World Health, has been conducting mobile medical clinics for nearly 20 years in the mountains of Jarabacoa, Dominican Republic.

The relationship began in the Spring of 2018 after the HHP/PWH March medical mission trip. Members of the mission team returned home determined to find a sustainable clean water solution for these impoverished communities. After connecting the through mutual friends, OBOV and HHP made an initial scouting trip to Jarabacoa in the Fall of 2018 to assess the viability of installing water systems.

In March, 2019, OBOV took a full mission team and joined the HHP/PWH team which included more than 100 doctors, nurses, dentists and USF medical students. During the week in Jarabacoa, team OBOV installed 6 water systems at the medical clinic sites in these impoverished communities. We also identified in-country partners Carlos Rosario and Lolin Peralta who are performing regular filter changes.

OBOV is currently in the planning stages for a return trip to Jarabacoa with Hope & Health Project in March, 2020. We anticipate this will be another great trip to install water systems, assist the medical team and share the love of Christ in The Dominican Republic.

Disaster Relief: Bahamas In the aftermath of Hurricane Dorian, OBOV partnered with Missionary Flights International (MFI) to deliver emergency relief supplies to Freeport, Marsh Harbor and Grand Bahama.

Through the donations of OBOV supporters, we delivered pallets of large tents with air mattresses, generators with related power cords and gas cans, box fans, solar-powered lights and lanterns, LED ashlights, bug repellent, personal hygiene items, portable water storage containers and 12,600 meals-ready-to-eat!

OBOV supporters answered God's call to love our brothers and sisters in the Bahamas devastated by Hurricane Dorian. Missionary Flights' airplane hangar in Ft. Pierce, FL was at capacity for weeks as they delivered 500,000 pounds of relief supplies following the hurricane!

Special thanks to GA Foods and their sta for their response just days after the hurricane in packing and supplying 12,600 meals which were immediately delivered and distributed.

Strategic Partnerships

Since our early beginnings in 2012, One Ball One Village has been blessed to work with many complimentary mission organizations and individuals committed to "helping the least of these" in so many ways. God continues to open 20 doors of opportunity for OBOV that we could not have imagined.

Partnership Spotlight: Mission Possible Relief Mission Possible Relief is based in Dallas, TX and managed

by OBOV friends Michele and Riis Christensen. In 2019, Mission Possible established a vocational trade school in Santo, Haiti and Michele and Riis established a residence for themselves in-country. In addition to the trade school, Mission Possible is passionate about clean water and installed 8 water systems at various locations in the country.

They also participated in OBOV's May mission trip and regularly work with Isaiah, Makendy and Loubert on clean water projects and maintenance.

Partnership Spotlight: Schools for Haiti Schools for Haiti is an exceptional, Tampa-based ministry which was formed in 2004 and operates 10 schools and a kindergarten in and around the town of Montrouis, Haiti. In addition to education, Schools for Haiti also meets the nutritional needs of over 2,000 children in Haiti who would otherwise go hungry.

OBOV began its work with Schools for Haiti in 2017, installing a water system at the Grace School in Montrouis. The water system has been such a blessing to the school that we decided to make a plan to install a water system in all 11 schools in May. A number of the school sites did not have a well or municipal water source and, instead, rely on water truck deliveries of contaminated water to meet their daily needs (see story on pages 30-33). This gave OBOV the exciting opportunity to install solar-powered pumps to create and store clean water for the school children.

Partnership Spotlight: Steadfast Mentoring

OBOV enjoys a close partnership with Steadfast Mentoring, Bay Hope Church’s ministry to incarcerated youth in the Florida Juvenile Justice System. In 2019, OBOV volunteers and Steadfast mentors worked with the teenagers at Les Peters Academy and Central Pasco Girls Academy to assemble 20 water systems which were installed by OBOV mission teams in Guatemala, Haiti and the Dominican Republic! In the past 3 years, 60 water systems have been assembled by incarcerated youth and deployed by OBOV to bless communities in the developing world.

Mission Spotlight: Mexico

The OBOV team of Bob & Sally Brown and Bob’s twin brother Steve, a member of Shoreline Church of San Clemente, California, successfully installed a water filtration system in a new church in the small remote village of Chicualoque, located in Vera Cruz, Mexico, five hours east of Mexico City. They were invited by Shoreline Church, to join a mission team of 29, which included staff from Kingdom Builders Ministries in Tijuana, California (providing needed translation and many other things). This was the second year in a row that the OBOV got the chance to team up with Shoreline in Mexico!

During the six day trip, the mission team also conducted VBS, held a Medical and Vision clinic, performed live music for the village and completed construction on a new church! Praise the Lord! All of this amazing work was coordinated with the help of Pastor Rutilo of the village of Chicualoque.

The villagers did not speak English, many have not attended church nor do they ever see “gringos”. They were so surprised when the group rolled into this small village yet were VERY welcoming and extended warm hospitality the entire trip. Some villagers remarked that the mission team were "angels sent from heaven”. OBOV is praising God for the leadership of Bob and Sally and Steve and the entire team from Shoreline Church. We look forward to our continued partnership.

Mission Spotlight: Jarabacoa, Dominican Republic

A nine-person OBOV mission team traveled to the northern portion of The Dominican Republic in March to share God's love with the people of Jarabacoa. This was our first week-long trip in conjunction with Tampa-based Hope & Health Project, who for 19 years has lead medical mission teams of doctors, nurses, dentists and medical students from the University of South Florida.

During the week, OBOV assisted the medical teams who evaluated and treated hundreds of patients, extracted many bad teeth and gave fluoride treatments to children in addition to installing 6 water systems.

OBOV is already planning another trip (March, 2020) and, among other objectives, hopes to help HHP expand its mobile clinics with vision care.

Mission Spotlight: Haiti

For the past couple of years, Haiti has been a country in political turmoil. Even though episodes of civil unrest have been common, a window opened in May for OBOV's mission team to travel.

As is highlighted here and on page 22, the primary objective of this trip was to install water systems at each of the schools operated by Schools for Haiti. The trip was complicated and required a lot of unusual gear. One school required the wiring and installation of a traditional submersible well pump. Two sites had no electricity at all and required solar-powered pumps, panels and controllers to make clean water. And four sites required the installation of clean water storage tanks.

Fortunately, the OBOV team from the U.S. was joined incountry by our 5 key, Haiti representatives as well as Michele and Riis Christensen from Mission Possible Relief. The end result: All systems were successfully installed except for one (which we plan to complete once the water source is reestablished)and we also installed a water system at a church/ medical clinic in Canaan. The Gospel Message of Jesus Christ was proclaimed through music, teaching, dramatic skits, soccer

and by spending time at each site explaining about the water system and the true purpose for our trip to the children and teachers.

ON THE FACING PAGE: Three weeks before our trip to Haiti, God introduced a last-minute opportunity for OBOV to consider: Mackensia's Orphanage. Mackensia (pictured in the top right corner and inside front cover) operates a small, extremely poor orphanage for 20 children in Montrouis and their needs became known to Schools for Haiti and another partner organization in Tampa, Fish Co. No water source existed at the orphanage, but after a strategy session with OBOV, Fish Co., decided to raise money to have a hand-dug well installed near the orphanage in hopes that a water system could be installed by the team. OBOV built an additional water system and took the gear necessary to install a submersible pump and run under ground pipe and electrical wiring from the well back to the orphanage (300' away). The team also purchased a new generator for the orphanage to run the well pump and installed a clean water storage tank! All of this came together in a mere 3 weeks and the team was able to complete the installation on their last day in Haiti!

Mission Spotlight: Guatemala (June)

OBOV had a combined team of 29 people participate in the June mission trip. The team had a new home base 6 hours north of Guatemala City in the town of Huehuetenango. In just four work days, the team facilitated a medical outreach to serve 650 people, installed 6 waters systems and facilitated 6 VBS programs that served over 850 people. We would like to thank our Guatemalan Directors David & Albina Albizures for all their hard work maintaining OBOV's water systems year-round, as well as organizing the mission teams and medical outreaches. We would also like to thank Benja Ixcot, OBOV's Medical Director in Guatemala, for all his hard work soliciting donations of the medical supplies/medicines, as well as recruiting medical professionals to volunteer their time to continually facilitate the medical outreaches year-round. A big thank you also goes out to Alfonso Ixcot for organizing and facilitating the VBS program at each medical outreach. Lastly, OBOV would like to thank it's long-time partner, Reverend Miguel Sofoifa with the Church of God denomination, for his invaluable partnership and friendship over the past 5 years. We are honored and blessed to work with such an amazing group of Guatemalan 34 partners!

2019 Closes with a Trip to Guatemala (Nov)

Jeff Gold led a team of 5 back to Guatemala in November. In just 3 short work days, the team installed two water purification systems and facilitated a medical outreach to serve 650 people. They also investigated the possibility of having a new home base for OBOV's summer 2020 mission trip in the region of Lake Atitlan. Once again, the team partnered with our dear friend Reverend Miguel Sofoifa with the Church of God denomination, who organized an amazing medical outreach to be held at Campo de Futbol de Ixtahuacan, a soccer stadium in the Huehuetenango area (bottom photo). The final installation was at Iglesia de Dios Evangelio Completo do Ixtahuacan. Soccer: The Universal Language

The creation of OBOV and the reason behind it's name all started with a soccer ball. A soccer ball was given to Pastor Timothy Wambura in Tanzania, Africa to use for outreach purposes. Pastor Timothy took it to the village of Raranya, Tanzania, a place where people worshiped their ancestors and had never heard the Gospel. In Raranya, two tribes were warring against each other and the soccer ball gift enabled Pastor Timothy to befriend these two tribes. These two villages are no longer warring against each other and Pastor Timothy has now built, with the help of OBOV, a church and school where over 250 people have come to Christ. The ONE soccer BALL literally transformed ONE VILLAGE....thus the name One Ball One Village was born.

OBOV continues to use soccer to reinforce the Gospel message of Jesus Christ everywhere we travel throughout the year. Whether a pickup game with village kids or presenting the "Mission Ball" to a Pastor where a water system is installed, OBOV uses the "universal language" of soccer to spread the Gospel.

One of the highlights of every year is the OBOV Summer Village Soccer Tournament in Haiti. And each year, OBOV's Missy Henk serves as designer and printer of the championship jerseys for the men's and women's finalists teams.
