OBOV: Our Mission in Pictures 2018

Page 1

The leaders, volunteers and supporters of One Ball One Village are following God's call to reach the "least of these" with clean water and the Good News of Jesus Christ. On the pages that follow, you will see images and stories of the miracles in which God has allowed us to play a small part over the past year. “Then the King will say to those on his right, ‘Come, you who are blessed by my Father; take your inheritance, the kingdom prepared for you since the creation of the world. For I was hungry and you gave me something to eat, I was thirsty and you gave me something to drink, I was a stranger and you invited me in, I needed clothes and you clothed me, I was sick and you looked after me, I was in prison and you came to visit me.’

“Then the righteous will answer him, ‘Lord, when did we see you hungry and feed you, or thirsty and give you something to drink? When did we see you a stranger and invite you in, or needing clothes and clothe you? When did we see you sick or in prison and go to visit you?’ “The King will reply, ‘Truly I tell you, whatever you did for one of the least of these brothers and sisters of mine, you did for me.’ "

Matthew 25: 34-40

OBOV LEADERSHIP

In developing nations, the responsibility of collecting and carrying water, sometimes miles away, usually falls on the women and young girls. Unfortunately, this burden doesn't afford them the opportunity to work or attend school. This woman is carrying water home from a water station in a rural village in Haiti.

One Ball One Village is so thankful to have such an amazing team of volunteers, in-country partners and donors who are all working together to answer God's call. Here are just a few of the highlights from the past year: 1. In-Country Leadership. OBOV is an all-volunteer organization and we simply could not accomplish God's calling without the diligent leadership of Makendy Paul, Isaiah Lapointe and Loubert Turenne in Haiti and David and Albina Albizures in Guatemala. Our ministry is expanding quickly in Haiti, Guatemala and Cuba because of these selfless followers of God. 2. Over 160 Total Water Systems Completed in 10 Countries. Contaminated water is the #1 health problem in the world. In just seven years, God has allowed us to impact the lives of thousands of people with the gift of clean water, coupled with the living water of Jesus Christ. 3. Disaster Relief in Guatemala. The catastrophic eruption of the Fuego Volcano this summer caused our summer Guatemala trip to be delayed. Instead, 7 OBOV team members immediately got on a plane and volunteered their time to distribute emergency relief supplies to 2,500 people over 5 days. The team distributed supplies to victims in areas closest to the center of the eruption. 4. Sustainability and Logistics. 160+ water systems in service means that OBOV's first job each year is water system maintenance. Through our partners and shipping channels, OBOV's supply chain continues to expand. 5. Partnerships. OBOV continues to expand its strategic partnership with other organizations in Haiti, Guatemala, Mexico and the Dominican Republic. See pages 14 - 21 for more information. 6. Ministry Growth in Medical Missions. In October and November, OBOV leadership traveled to both the Dominican Republic and Guatemala to explore future opportunities to support medical mission efforts in impoverished areas in both countries.

7. Spreading the Good News of Jesus Christ. As you will witness on the pages that follow, every water system that is installed/maintained and every team that travels represents an opportunity for OBOV members to share their faith in Christ. Our primary focus when installing water filtration systems is that the living water of Jesus Christ be shared when the clean water is being distributed.

One of OBOV's long-standing relationships is with Steadfast Ministries, Bay Hope Church's mentoring program in the Florida juvenile justice system. For several years, the incarcerated teenagers at two Tampa-area facilities have built and tested the water systems which have been installed by OBOV's summer mission teams.

Sharing God's Love: New Water System Installations

Why Water?

Contaminated water is the #1 health problem in the world. Poor populations in developing countries like Haiti, Guatemala, Mexico and Tanzania struggle to ďŹ nd water each day to survive. Many are forced to drink from water sources where life threatening bacteria like E Coli, Cholera and Typhoid are present.

In the past 7 years, OBOV has completed... Over 160 water projects in... 10 countries, collectively processing... Over 3.3 million gallons of clean water per month!

Our Solution

Each water system deploys sustainable technology readily available in the United States and consists of 4-stage, sub-micron ďŹ ltration which physically removes harmful bacteria from drinking water. I

Contaminated water is delivered by truck each week to this orphanage and deposited in the in-ground cistern (lid is visible in the foreground). The solar panel on the roof powers a submersible pump in the cistern which pumps the water through the water system!

This past June, the OBOV team of Troy Muilenburg and Bob Brown traveled to the impoverished community of Antorcha in Tijuana, Mexico. The guys joined Bob's twin brother Steve and Shoreline Community Church (Santa Barbara, CA) on a churchbuild project and installed a water system for Pastor Manuel and his wife Judith during the trip. The water system is at a church that feeds 80-100 children each day. This may be the ďŹ rst of many water projects in Mexico.

In one of the highlights of the summer Haiti trip, "Team OBOV" installed a highcapacity water system inside the women's prison in Cabaret. (August). Inset: Isaiah worked down inside the pump pit for several hours in the 100 degree Haiti sun making the PVC pipe connections.

Sharing God's Love: Sustainability and Logistics

With 80+ water systems installed in Haiti, OBOV's supply chain begins with the purchase and inventory of water system parts and ďŹ lters from supply houses in the southeastern U.S. These supplies are then delivered on container ships and with air shipments through Missionary Flights International.

The OBOV water ministry is focused on sustainability. We are blessed to have such a dedicated group including David and Albina (Guatemala), Makendy, Isaiah and Loubert (Haiti) and Mayito (Cuba) who are committed to keeping these systems operating properly. The logistical challenges of supplying replacement ďŹ lters and parts for 160+ systems grows each year and your support enables us to ensure that each water system remains a blessing for the churches, schools, orphanages, hospitals and communities they serve.

Sharing God's Love: Partnerships

14

God has blessed One Ball One Village with many complimentary mission organizations and individuals committed to "helping the least of these" in so many ways. On the pages that follow, we highlight a few of OBOV's closest partnerships that continue to open new doors of opportunity for OBOV.

Partnerships

Steadfast Ministries of Bay Hope Church is a statewide mentoring program for teenagers in the Florida Juvenile Justice System. For the past several years, OBOV has partnered with Steadfast, giving the incarcerated youth the chance to assemble the water systems OBOV installs year round in places like Guatemala and Haiti. OBOV also holds monthly missions and outreach events to involve these precious kids in making a dierence in the world in the name of Jesus! The incarcerated girls in particular are responsible for making all the gospel bracelets and toiletry bags that are handed out 15 in Haiti and Guatemala!

Partnerships

16

In 2015, OBOV began working in eastern Cuba in the area of Guantanamo and surrounding towns in cooperation with Bay Hope Church and good friends Jon and Julie Brigner of Acts29Foccus, a Tampa-based non-profit. Jon is the pioneer of the 4-stage water filtration system and first identified that the water needs in Cuba are just as desperate as other developing countries. OBOV now maintains over 20 water systems in eastern Cuba. Pictured here is Jon along with Mario "Mayito" Montoya who performs regular maintenance on the water systems.

Partnerships

Mission Possible Relief is based in Dallas, TX and managed by OBOV friends Michele and Riis Christensen. Early this year, Mission Possible did relief work in Puerto Rico, including the installation of 2 water systems. Later in the summer, Michele and Riis spent 2 months in Haiti laying the groundwork for a new trade school, setting up a permanent residence and installed 4 OBOV water systems at various sites.

17

Partnerships

In October, OBOV traveled with Dr. Jose Colon and Hope and Health Project (HHP) to the Dominican Republic, to survey sites for potential water system installations. For the past 18 years, HHP has lead medical mission teams to the remote, mountainous areas around Jarabacoa, DR. OBOV and HHP are exploring ways to combine the eorts of their respective ministries in 2019!

18

Partnerships

Schools for Haiti is a Tampa-based ministry which operates 10 schools in the areas around Montrouis, Haiti. In 2016, OBOV installed a water system at the Grace Christian School and, in 2018, traveled in April to survey the remaining 9 schools and make plans to install water systems at each. One of OBOV's 2019 goals is to send a team to complete these nine installations, which will be a blessing to thousands of students!

19

Partnerships

In November, OBOV Guatemalan Directors Albina and David Albizures, in partnership with Miguel Sofoifa with the Church of God, organized an amazing medical outreach in the town of Aldea Buena Vista. The team served 450 patients, including 150 women and children. 51 medical professionals from Guatemala City and the nearby town of Huehuetenango participated in the outreach. OBOV is exploring ways to expand this medical ministry in 2019!

Disaster Relief: Guatemala

Days before our OBOV team was supposed to y to Guatemala, Fuego Volcano erupted causing catastrophic damage and over 100 deaths. The decision was made by 5 OBOV members to take advantage of this opportunity to share God's love and participate in distributing disaster relief supplies. Over 5 days, the team distributed relief supplies to 2,500 victims in the region closest to the center of the volcanic eruption. The original team of 18 was able to reschedule their trip to July.

On this page: The OBOV team was unable to cross over dangerous lava ows and rising waters, so the nearby town sent over 4x4 trucks to come pick up all the disaster relief supplies the OBOV team had packed for the day.

Mission Spotlight: Guatemala

After a delay due to the volcanic eruption, our team of 18 people ďŹ nally made it to Guatemala at the end of July. The team completed 6 water systems in just 4 working days and conducted Vacation Bible School programs for over 550 children and 250 moms. God coordinated an amazing team of volunteers, including our dedicated and vivacious youth team of 7!

On this page: The team had to transfer from our 15 passenger vans to the back of 4x4

pick up trucks in order to reach the remote public school, Escuela El Esfuerzo. The school and town was so remote that they have no access to basic services. Only 4x4 trucks can gain access because the roads are so diďŹƒcult to navigate. Many of the children at Escuela El Esfuerzo were sick.

Mission Spotlight: Haiti

OBOV mission teams made 2 trips to Haiti in 2018. The April team spent the majority of its time surveying over 20 sites for future water system installations. The August team installed 5 water systems and attended the 5th Annual OBOV Haiti Village Soccer Tournament. ON THIS PAGE: On its last day in country, the August mission team completed a water system installation at the women's prison at Cabaret. The team endured 100+ degree heat and resulting dehydration in the process. One of the highlights of the trip, however, was that Laurie, Suzanne, Gerda LeFranc and Therkine Lapointe (Isaiah's wife) got to visit one-on-one with the 276 inmates in the prison. The team distributed hygiene kits to each inmate and hear their excitement in having clean water in the prison for the ďŹ rst time. Most importantly, the OBOV ladies were able to pray with the women and share the love of Jesus Christ in a very tough environment. Praise the Lord! 30

Sharing God's Love: Soccer

2018 marked the 5th Annual OBOV Haiti Village Soccer Tournament! Spirited men's and women's teams from 8 rural villages outside Croix Des Bouquets compete in the month-long event each summer which culminated in championship matches in late August. OBOV also uses soccer to reinforce the Gospel message of Jesus Christ everywhere we travel throughout the year. Whether a pickup game with village kids or presenting the "Mission Ball" to a Pastor where a water system is installed, OBOV continues to use the "universal language" of soccer to spread the Gospel.
