Dr. Mary Gilmer is a board certified orthopedic surgeon who specializes in the foot and ankle. A Birmingham native, she became interested in orthopedics after fracturing her arm at a young age. After returning to Birmingham at the completion of her training she joined OrthoAlabama Spine and Sports and is now partners with Dr. Perry Savage who took care of her as a child.

Dr. Gilmer sees patients of all ages with orthopedic problems. She uses a collaborative approach to patient care to allow treatment to be customized to the patient and his or her goals. r. Bailey and his team at Naaman Clinic are committed to providing the highest level of care for their dermatology patients. As a BoardCertified Dermatologist, a Fellowship trained skin cancer and reconstructive surgeon, and a published cancer researcher, Dr. Bailey has extensive experience in his field. He is passionate about using his training to improve care for patients. This includes perfecting existing techniques for cancer surgeries as well as developing new approaches to track and remove cancers.

Over the years, cancer care has become highly specialized, and skin cancer surgery is now a specialty of its own, with nationally accredited training programs. Dr. Bailey trained in a nationally accredited fellowship program, and has been an instructor in three accredited fellowships over the past 10 years. As a skin cancer specialist with years of experience, he is passionate about educating patients and physicians on proper skin cancer treatment. He uses the highly accurate surgical technique of Mohs micrographic surgery to remove skin cancers.

This technique has now become the standard of care for most skin cancers because of its high cure rate and ability to spare healthy tissue.

Quoting Dr. Bailey, “Standard surgical techniques are not adequate for many skin cancers, and when used, some cancers will recur. Every day I see recurrent cancers that were treated with less accurate techniques. We have very clear national criteria based on excellent data on what cancers should be treated with Mohs micrographic surgery. Cancers that meet these criteria should not be treated with standard excision, topical medications, or cautery, or they will recur. Recurrent cancers are more aggressive, and require longer surgeries and larger reconstructions. To have the best possible outcome, the smallest scar, and the highest cure rate, cancers that meet the criteria for Mohs surgery should be treated by a qualified, fellowship trained Mohs surgeon. There is no debate on what constitutes quality care as we have nationally recognized standards for skin cancer surgery. The problem in many cases is access to this care - physicians and patients may not know the best option for a given cancer. Our mission at Naaman Clinic is to guide patients through the options and provide access to the highest quality skin cancer care. In most cases this is Mohs surgery to remove the tumor followed by immediate reconstruction.”

There are times where even Mohs Surgery can fail to detect skin cancers. According to Dr. Bailey, “We have known for years that certain tumors are difficult to detect and remove with standard Mohs techniques. We needed a better approach for these cancers. At Naaman Clinic, we now have this approach, called immuno-Mohs, and it has changed how we treat these skin cancers.”

Drawing on his years of research in cancer biology, Dr. Bailey is the first surgeon in Birmingham to develop and use the novel immuno-Mohs approach. This has allowed him to provide an even higher cure rate with Mohs micrographic surgery as he is able to detect and remove cancers that standard Mohs techniques fail to detect. He trains other surgeons in

this innovative technique, as he is codirector of a surgical fellowship where he trains surgeons in cancer surgery and reconstruction.

As Dr. Bailey explains, “Immunostains have revolutionized Mohs surgery for all types of skin cancers.

Standard Mohs surgery can detect most common cancers. In a subset of cases, cancer cells can mask themselves and hide in the normal structures of skin, and standard Mohs surgery fails to detect these cancer cells. Immunostains used in the immunoMohs technique unveil the cancer cells, allowing me to track and remove the tumor, providing a higher cure rate than standard Mohs surgery. We now have this technique for multiple skin cancers, and every day I see patients who benefit from us using this new approach. It is exciting to provide this cutting-edge care for our patients.”

Dr. Bailey’s successful, data driven approach has also provided benefits for his clinic patients at Naaman Clinic. Reviewing patient data revealed that a substantial number of skin cancers diagnosed by Dermatologists are not spots for which patients seek care.

Many patients come in concerned about one particular spot, or a rash, but cancers are discovered on a comprehensive skin exam.

For this reason, all clinic patients at Naaman Clinic are offered a comprehensive full body skin exam to screen for skin cancers.

In some cases, we may see patients who have never had anyone look through their hair or between their toes. A full skin exam should be exactly that, and we have both male and female providers to provide the most comfortable experience for all our patients.”

Applying new technology also helps in some cases avoid biopsies and surgeries.

Dr. Bailey uses serial photography of moles, and high-resolution photographs with a dermatoscope to follow certain types of moles. This highly sensitive approach allows detection of changing moles and early detection of melanoma. It also in some

cases provides the reassurance that a spot is benign and does not need a biopsy. “If I see a pediatric patient with a distinct mole, we can take high resolution photographs with dermoscopy, which allows us to see deeper structures than you can see with standard photographs. If these moles do not change with serial exams, many times they do not need to be removed. In cases where we do see change, we can focus our biopsies on the most concerning area to obtain the best biopsy in the least invasive fashion.”

At the end of the day, however, it is patient care that is the driving force at Naaman Clinic.

“It is exciting to develop new approaches to skin cancer surgery and reconstruction.

I also love teaching young surgeons skin cancer surgery and reconstructive techniques and the host of laser surgical procedures we perform. What I enjoy most, however, is getting to know our patients. In skin cancer surgery, we have the opportunity to get to know our patients both during the surgery and the postoperative visits, and for some patients, in their follow up skin exams. We have patients we have seen for many years and over time, they become like family. Cultivating these relationships is what makes practicing dermatology rewarding, and we look forward to continuing to serve our patients for years to come.” v

Many people don’t know when to see an allergist or what conditions they treat. A board certified allergist/immunologist specializes in the diagnosis and treatment of environmental, food, drug, and insect allergies, as well as asthma, chronic cough, hay fever, skin disorders (eczema and hives), chronic infections, and immunologic disorders. No other health care professional is as qualified to treat allergy, asthma, and immunological diseases as an allergist.

All of our allergists/immunologists are certified by the American Board of Allergy & Immunology (ABAI), and have completed at least nine years of medical training. Each of our physicians has the unique training and expertise to identify the allergic or immunological mechanisms that contribute to a patient’s medical condition. They are the only physicians who receive specialized training to perform and interpret allergy testing, treat complex allergic diseases asthma, and prescribe allergen immunotherapy (allergy shots).

Allergies, asthma, and immune disorders can be serious. Many

people with allergic diseases don’t realize how severe their condition may be, how much better they could feel with treatment, or how their overall quality of life could be improved. Always talk to your primary care physician or pediatrician about symptoms.

If symptoms are severe or persist after initial treatment, they may refer you or your child to an allergist.

Our Food Allergy Treatment Center

We are proud to offer individualized oral immunotherapy for peanuts and tree nuts to both children and adults. Oral immunotherapy (OIT), or oral desensitization, is a new treatment that retrains the immune system to tolerate a food allergen. Treatment involves eating small, gradually increasing doses of peanuts or tree nuts each day under the careful supervision of our board certified allergist, Dr. Carolyn Comer. Our goal for treatment is to improve our patient’s overall quality of life, and give them a lifetime of freedom from the fear and stress of a nut allergy.

Specializing in cornea, cataract, external disease, refractive surgery and minimally invasive glaucoma, Dr. Walter Parker is joining a team of 4 board-certified ophthalmologists.

Originally from Montgomery, Dr. Walter Parker received his undergraduate degree in biomedical sciences at Auburn University. He went on to receive his medical degree at the University of Alabama at Birmingham School of Medicine and then completed his residency in Ophthalmology at Baylor College of Medicine/Cullen Eye Institute in Houston, TX. He completed his Cornea, Cataract, Refractive, and Glaucoma fellowship at the Lindstrom Fellowship at Minnesota Eye Consultants in Minneapolis.

After completing his fellowship in Minnesota, Dr. Walter Parker knew he wanted to set his sights on somewhere closer to his roots.

“We spent five years in Birmingham for medical school and intern year and fell in love with the city during that time.

Dr. Luna is a graduate of UAB’s School of Dentistry and attended a 2-year residency in Charleston, South Carolina. He has also received further education on cosmetic and neuromuscular dentistry at the Las Vegas Institute for Advanced Dental Studies.

Dr. Luna is a national and international speaker, and he has received numerous awards including a Fellowship Award in the Academy of General Dentistry, and being identified in the Consumer’s Research Council of America’s “Guide to America’s Top Dentists.” He was

also voted Most Caring Dentist by you, the B-Metro reader.

His work has been published in brochures and dental magazines across the country and he is the owner of a consultant company helping other dentists improve their clinical skills.

And that’s not the only thing in Dr. Luna’s life to have expanded this year. In addition to his three children, Dr. Luna’s wife Elizabeth gave birth to twin daughters in July.
