Greater Birmingham Association of Home Builders Take a peek inside more than 80 new homes across the Greater Birmingham area during the 2013 Parade of Homes, April 20-21 and April 27-28.

Homes will be open to the public, Saturday 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. and Sunday, 1 to 6 p.m. There is no charge to tour a Parade home.

This parade has been nationally recognized as an award-winning event hosting thousands of visitors who search for the latest in innovative building and decorating trends. The parade is a major project of the Greater Birmingham Association of Home Builders, which is comprised of developers, general and specialty contractors, suppliers and associates. 
 The GBAHB will also present the 2nd Annual Ideal Home during the 2013 Parade of Homes. The Ideal Home, a showcase house with the latest in smart-home design, decor and sustainability, will be located in The Preserve in Hoover and built by Byrom Building Corporation. The home will be open during regular Parade of Homes.

Parade Homes range from 1,000 - to over 4,000 square feet. Whether you are a first-time buyer, looking to move-up to a more luxurious property, scaling back, or even looking for a remodeling contractor, this event could be just the ticket to a new home.

Their teenage son Jack says convenience is a plus.

“I can walk home from school. There’s always someone to hang out with. We go to the community pool or get something to eat at the Town Center. I’m never bored.”

hen Hank and Debbie Bowman drove into The Preserve for the first time, they fell in love with the architecture. “There is no other neighborhood like this,” says Debbie. “All the porches lining the sidewalks are so welcoming.”

The couple was impressed with the community enough to build a home here and to hold their wedding at Town Hall. “We were one of the first weddings in The Preserve,” says Hank.

A special memory for Debbie is the spontaneous breakfast they hosted with neighbors one winter when it snowed. “We played outside and then decided to gather and make a family-style breakfast. We’ve made it a tradition to do a breakfast every year since, whether or not it snows!”

Charlie and Susan Colwell understand that neighbors become good friends here. “We are best friends with our next door neighbors,” says Susan.

Finding the Perfect Place From Tom and Kay McCarthy, the perfect place to live in this stage of their lives is close to family and nature.

om and Kay McCarthy moved into their new home at The Preserve at the end of June, 2012.

A veteran pilot for Federal Express, Tom loved the neighborhood, the proximity to children and grandchildren in Ross Bridge and Huntsville.

for all of the same reasons, as well as the sure sense that here was a home just perfect for this stage of their lives.

Wisconsin natives, the couple own a home in Madison, Wisconsin, where much of their extended family still lives. They also own a place in Memphis, where Tom has worked for decades for Federal Express.

Tom is a former marine pilot and he and Kay, as typical of military families, moved 13 times in 11 years. That sense of rootlessness retreated with Tom's move to FedEx, but the couple has come to realize that this new home — built by Rusty and Vicki Fowler — seems to be just the right combination of location, style, and proximity to family. b-metro.com 115

The McCarthys recall searching throughout the region for a place to put down new roots. A walk around the lot that would become their new home in The Preserve was all it took. Topazi October 2010 Design of our home was done promptly and plans were ready quickly. Since we had the exterior design picked out… it was easy to adapt a previous home built by Rusert to our plans. The process developed by RCH to sit down and pick interior and exterior items is a fast procedure… very helpful and moves the building process on quickly. We chose outside of some of the vendors used by RCH but the acquisition of the items was handled promptly and we were always kept informed.

Since we were remodeling our lake house with RCH at the same time.. it was a challenge to keep it all straight. Thanks to Sarah Waltz and Mike Coffey we were able to sort most things out. There was never a request the we made that this company did not try to meet. The budget was developed but due to change orders that we made we managed to go over by 10%. The quality of workmanship from the beautiful trim work to the installation of lighting was all done in a professional manner. Overall, our home is beautiful and well built and RCH definitely stands behind their work. Great Job!!!

Building a Home can be a very trying experience on all parties involved. With all the subcontractors, materials suppliers etc. that must work together, there is always something not going as planned. It’s a given that there will be frustrations and bumps in the road.

Rusert Homes and their staff did everything in their power to ensure that the project stayed on track and on budget. Any issues that I raised were addressed. As a result, I have a beautiful and functional home designed exactly to my (wife’s) specifications.
