top 10 Dia de Los Muertos Each year, the streets of downtown Birmingham are infused with sound, color, and movement as hundreds gather to celebrate Día de Los Muertos, or Day of the Dead. It’s a centuries-old Mexican tradition that honors those who have gone before us in death and the connections we have with them. “The ancient belief asserts that the souls of the deceased come to visit during Day of the Dead guided by the familiar sights, sounds, and fragrances of the items placed on their shrines and their loved ones gathered round,” explains Wendy Jarvis, artistic director for the festival. “It is a rich and soulful way to honor our ancestors and to cherish and remember lost loved ones in the company of community.”

This year marks the 12th of Birmingham’s own celebration, which is hosted by Bare Hands, Inc., a nonprofit arts organization in Birmingham, and will take place on Nov. 2, 2014, from 4–11 p.m. “It is a celebration of life—a deep soul connection to a person we have lost and the many ways he or she has affected us,” says Catherine Partain, altar outreach ambassador for Bare Hands. “It is the one thing we all share in common—the cycle of life and death. The struggle around and the journey between. It affects us all.”

Each year, loved ones are memorialized through altars crafted by Día de Los Muertos participants. Many begin making these memorials weeks before the festival. For those who have participated before, this might include pulling out last year’s sugar skull or altar box and adding new adornments to it or perhaps creating new works to honor different people.
