The company has grown from 49 employees in August of 2019 to 122 employees in August 2023, including seven new positions in Birmingham. Revenue has grown 455%. The active client base grew from nine customers to more than 30. Partnerships are being pursued in Singapore and Oman.

“Concert IDC is a proven software development firm that offers premier technology resources at a greater value. Licensed and insured in the United States and headquartered in Birmingham, Alabama, the company has 120+ employees working in four states in the U.S. and two offices in India. As a result, clients benefit from a powerful combination of world-class technical expertise and outstanding communication that leads to stellar results. The company is the result of over 10 years of software development for partners and a 2022 merger between ConcertCare and International Development Connection. Formerly competitors, the two joined forces after realizing they could do more for clients by working together. The entire company is driven by innovation and excellence, with the technical ability and entrepreneurial knowledge that helps projects succeed and businesses thrive.”

Tanveer Patel started ConcertCare 10 years ago. At the time, the company focused on alleviating the pain of healthcare providers and improving their clinical and operational outcomes with technology.

Patel’s goal was always innovation. She wanted to be passionate about her work and to let that fuel the company, so she worked diligently, wearing many different hats, and growing the company.

“Innovation was a focus,” Patel said. “We didn’t want to do just a substandard job or what everyone else was doing, but we wanted to do something which will become innovative and creative, and that will improve the existing products and services of our customers.”

Now ConcertIDC, the company, has grown into an international custom software development firm working with all different industries and constantly keeping ahead of the curve. The journey has been long but filled with steadfast determination and grit.

When Patel first began ConcertCare, there were many factors she took into consideration. She knew she wanted to create jobs, solve problems, make a profit, and create a sustainable business model. Moreover, Patel was motivated by her deep knowledge of business practices in India and America.

Patel has been in the United States since she was 19 years old. In the years since she has worked in many corporate landscapes and developed a profound knowledge of what corporate America seeks and values.

With her understanding of corporate America and her appreciation for the culture she was raised in, she saw an opportunity to embrace both worlds and become a bridge between India and the US as companies, cultures, and economies.

“My mission was to offer a unique value proposition to

both the countries in their own distinct ways,” said Patel. “My roots in India allowed me to appreciate the nuances of its culture and the intricacies of business practices. My time in the US provided me with insight into the fast-paced, resultoriented innovation for corporate America. So, I became like a conduit.”

Beyond her passion for combining these two cultures to create the best environment for innovation, she also recognized the cost efficiency of having a highly skilled and cost-effective workforce in India, with a headquarters in Birmingham.

Having teams in both countries meant that ConcertCare works around the clock for its customers so they can get things to the market faster. This model is one that, to this day, ensures ConcertIDC’s promise of excellence for its customers.

Patel partnered with Vinoth Sudaroli and Srinivasan Ganesan, ConcertIDC’s Vice President (India) and Vice President of Business Development and Employee Development, respectively.

Vinoth and Srinivasan had been working together with a small team in India since 2008. When Patel sought out a team of offshore developers, they knew it was the right move for their company.

The first few years of developing ConcertCare were challenging. Trying to establish the company’s operations proved to be a considerable feat as they tried to manage all the things that go into a startup.

They prioritized strong leadership, innovation, marketing, sound financial management, scalability, talent acquisition and retention, and adoption of new technology. Vinoth emphasizes that there was a significant learning curve through the first few years. They had to shift from being only focused on delivery and work to building the foundation of a company that could continue to grow.

“Me and my partners had to wear many different hats,

16 B-METRO.COM

and so did my employees,” said Patel.

Patel’s experiences integrating into the local tech scene informed how she began to grow ConcertCare. In the first several years, she was heavily focused on that aspect of the company because “when you know people, you can get their business.”

Vinoth and Srinivasan prioritized delegation and the growth of their employees. They allowed employees to take on more prominent roles and learn from each other.

“Keeping employee engagement is key,” Srinivasan said. “We used to conduct a session for the people to show their skills to the entire team so that other people can learn from them.”

After six years of hard work to grow the company on both a micro and macro level, Patel sensed it was time to usher in the next phase of growth. She understood that real growth means constantly evolving.

“My strengths lie in starting a company and growing it to a certain level where we have worked out all the challenges and issues, the pains and sufferings, to create a model which is sustainable,” said Patel.

Her next move was to introduce someone to bring the structure and accountability necessary for large teams, customers, and project execution. In 2019, she brought Debra Hays in as the Chief Operating Officer of ConcertCare.

Hays was excited about the opportunity because 21 years earlier, she had worked with Patel. She knew it was necessary to put the proper infrastructure and foundation in place to push the company forward.

In 2020, she made the transition from COO to CEO.

Right as Hays stepped in as CEO, the pandemic hit. This was a setback, but the company continued to grow steadily. They focused on progressing with their existing customers while adding other turnkey customers. They ensured every project was delivered excellently to maintain the business and grow in Birmingham.

“We also knew that we were going to have to do mergers and acquisitions to grow,” said Hays.

In late 2019, before the pandemic hit, Hays attended the ConcertCare Annual Celebration in India, where she met Brandon Barker. At the time, Barker was CEO of International Development Connection, a software development company headquartered in Chattanooga, Tennessee, with an offshore development team.

Upon their first meeting, Hays and Barker joked about the potential of a merger between their companies. Neither one seriously considered it until the middle of the pandemic.

When the pandemic hit, both CEOs had kids struggling with online school. They reconnected over the idea for VirtuOwl, an online platform designed to enable educators to better care for their students with a system built to support them.

They focused on VirtuOwl as a one-off collaboration, a test run of sorts. The ConcertCare team owned the backend and the web application, and the IDC team owned the mobile application. After about 8-9 months, they saw the synergies of their teams, and halfway through 2021, they decided to take the leap and merge.

“We were acting as one, at least within this project that we’re doing, so Debra started really analyzing,” Barker said. “Let’s look at the numbers. Let’s look at your projections and our projections. Let’s look at our assets and resources and yours. The more we started analyzing those components of our businesses independently, we realized when you merge those two teams together, it creates a stronger revenue model.”

IDC and ConcertCare faced many of the same challenges, and a merger allowed the company to fill in critical gaps that had been identified as things they needed but didn’t yet have. Too many people were wearing too many hats, and a merger meant everyone would be free to focus on the area they excel in.

“IDC allowed us to grow into other geographies. It allowed us to bring in key management people both in India and the US. It also allowed us to bring in strategic selling. Brandon is more bent towards sales, whereas I am more bent towards operations and operational growth, so it was a good mix of skill sets,” said Hays.

By Oct. 2021, Hays and Barker had laid out a plan and started to present it to the owners and founders of each company. After about three months of handling the legal side, the merger finally happened. They executed the contract on Dec. 31, 2021.

On Jan. 1, 2022, ConcertIDC was official. The merger allowed the company to flourish because each component slid into place. Everyone was able to focus on their specific areas, but more than that, ConcertIDC was allowed to be more focused with its assets and resources.

Since the merger, Hays has focused on the operational and strategic things every CEO must do. She has ensured the right operational leaders are in place to empower her to focus on strategic elements. This includes growing a network in the Middle East, facilitating leadership conferences, and participating in other organizations.

Barker is now the Chief Revenue Officer of ConcertIDC

B-METRO.COM 17

and has been able to focus on driving revenue growth and growing the pipeline.

The merger slated new leadership into place with James Sowder as the VP of Operation (US), Sanjay Bhati as COO of India Operations, Cecil Bostany as CFO, and Kannan K as Director of Technology.

The combination of leaders from IDC and ConcertCare has laid the stage for the next phase of growth for the company.

“We have a solid foundation of resources, team members, and a history that is going to put us in a position for exponential growth. I think that now we are set for that opportunity, and we just must go get it,” said Barker.

This year, the company has begun to grow in new ways. ConcertIDC secured its first single million-dollar contract and its first contract in the Middle East.

Now, the ConcertIDC team is looking ahead to what the next 10 years may hold while giving massive credit to every single employee that has made the past 10 years so successful.

“There are many differences from when we started in 2013, and now the company is at a different stage. It’s all the collaboration and support of each and every person who contributed towards the company’s growth. It is the people on the ground level and the leadership level who are responsible for where we are now,” said Vinoth.

Hays sees a future where the company opens offices in other countries, like Ireland or South America. She believes

“I’m very proud of what we’ve all done together. I think we’ve put the leaders of the future in place, and really, we can go anywhere,” said Hays.

Barker attributes the company’s success to not only the employees who have been with the company through its many challenges but also the founders and owners of the organization, whose passion has made it possible to thrive.

“I would say it’s not just our people within the organization that are employees, but also the founders, the owners of the organization,” said Barker. “It’s not just our people behind the scenes that make the daily grind happen and deliver because if we didn’t do that, we wouldn’t be anywhere, but our growth and opportunities for growth in the future are really coming from our owners.”

ConcertIDC is poised to continue innovating and growing, and it all comes back to the goals Tanveer Patel set when she first began the company. Her passion for this company has been a guiding light for all the leaders that have followed, and she is eager to see how the company continues to grow.

“I’m super excited, and I am just amazed at the way we have grown. When you put the right leaders in place, only good, actually, great things happen. I have never been as excited about the company as I am this year,” Patel said.

Delta State UniverSity

If you head west from the intersection of U.S. Highway 61 and MS-8, you’ll discover the hub of educational excellence, athletic pride and cultural enrichments for the Mississippi Delta, Delta State University.

Perhaps best known for its successful alumni like former CEO and chairman of UPS David Abney; record-breaking athletes like Lusia “Lucy” Harris; renowned coaches including Margaret Wade and Boo Ferriss; and of course, its beloved unofficial mascot, The Fighting Okra. Delta State and the Mississippi Delta region have enjoyed a mutually beneficial relationship that has lasted almost 100 years.

On June 7, 1924, Delta State Teachers College opened with a faculty of eleven and an enrollment of 123. In 1955, the name was changed to Delta State College due to the expanding educational programs offered. In 1974, Delta State College became Delta State University.

The University offers several unique educational opportunities, such as the state’s only bachelor’s and master’s degree in Commercial Aviation. Delta State is one of only seven universities nationwide selected for the grants under the new FedEx Purple Runway Aviation Scholarship Program.

The Center for Interdisciplinary Geospatial Information Technologies is an independent unit of the College of Arts and Sciences and has grown considerably over the past several years. Recently, the center became the only North American Regional Support Office for the United Nations Platform for Space-based Disaster Management and Emergency Response.

The Robert E. Smith School of Nursing houses another signature program at Delta State. From the undergraduate and graduate degrees in nursing to the RN-BSN Completion Program, Delta State fills hospitals and medical facilities with quality nursing professionals.

While many students come to DSU from the Delta region, the University never charges out-of-state tuition fees, attracting students from around the country. On the international front, the University is also expanding its footprints with students from forty-two countries currently represented on campus.

With the Mississippi Delta being the birthplace of American

music, DSU opened the Delta Music Institute (DMI) Recording Studios in the spring of 2009. DMI is also home to the DMI Mobile Music Lab, a mobile music technology facility serving elementary and high school students in the Mississippi Delta.

Through the Delta Music Institute, an exciting new chapter for the university began in 2016 when the GRAMMY Museum® Mississippi opened its doors on the DSU campus. It was the first sanctioned GRAMMY Museum® outside of Los Angeles.

A new Digital Media Arts program has recently been added at DSU. The facilities feature a state-of-the-art Mac Lab, a green screen area, 2D and 3D animation technology and a voice-over booth. DSU is the only program in the state to offer an Animation concentration.

Delta State is home of the Bologna Performing Arts Center, a multi-disciplinary facility that provides first-class arts and entertainment for DSU and the region. The main performance hall consists of 1,178 seats in the Delta & Pine Land Theater and there are 135 seats in the more intimate Recital Hall. The BPAC has earned recognition as one of the premier venues in Mississippi and the Southeast.

In 2000, The Delta Center for Culture and Learning launched to promote greater understanding of Mississippi Delta culture and history and its significance to the world. The Delta Center serves as the management entity of the Mississippi Delta National Heritage Area and is the home of the International Delta Blues Project and the National Endowment for the Humanities’ “Most Southern Place on Earth” workshops for K-12 educators.

In addition to its educational and cultural influences, Delta State serves as an economic powerhouse in the region and beyond.

Delta State has a $175 million positive impact on the Mississippi Delta, which breaks down as $44 million in direct spending, and $110 million in knowledge impact of $81 million in increased alumni earnings, $27 million in social benefits and $2 million in cultural benefits. DSU supports roughly 550 jobs, including more than 400 full-time employees. Delta State further provides more than 207,000 hours in community development activities such as health, education, and civic outreach.

DSU continues to refine and update programs and renovate buildings, structures, and roadways for a constantly fresh look on campus. In the past year, Delta State has completed several renovation projects designed to enhance the campus and make it more efficient for students, faculty, staff, and the community.

U.S. News & World Report has ranked UM as one of the top Public Regional Universities for the past 15 years, as well as a Best Value School and one of the most innovative schools in the nation, and the institution has been named a College of Distinction for 12 consecutive years.

At UM, we don’t merely inspire – we teach our students how to harness inspiration, become versatile and give back. Through our accreditations, scholarships and faculty resources, we’ve cultivated a reputation for producing bright minds.

Montevallo offers academic programs in four colleges: Arts and Sciences, Business, Education and Human Development and Fine Arts. Students choose from more than 30 degree programs and approximately 70 major and concentration combinations. They participate in an educational environment boasting an average class size of 16 and have unprecedented opportunities for conducting undergraduate research under full-time faculty mentors.

Our 23 NCAA intercollegiate teams compete in the Gulf South Conference, Peach Belt Conference and the New South Intercollegiate Swimming Conference. In addition to NCAA teams, UM also has cheerleading, dance, cycling, fishing and esports teams.

Unique to Montevallo is our homecoming tradition, College Night, known as the oldest tradition of its kind in the nation. Montevallo students from across all disciplines have come together for a spirited competition like no other for now more than a century. College Night has twice been featured as an answer on Jeopardy!® and has its own permanent exhibit in the American Folklife Center at the Library of Congress.

University of soUth AlAbAmA

Have you ever thought about combining a great academic environment with the white sandy beaches of the upper Gulf Coast?

The University of South Alabama — South, for short — is located in Mobile, Alabama, and it’s so close to the beach, it’s an easy day trip when you’re finished with class. In fact, for some majors, the Gulf of Mexico IS their classroom. For the other 115+ academic programs, the 1,200-acre campus includes state-of-the-art facilities for learning, teaching, research and living.

USA offers early acceptance programs that provide highly qualified high school seniors with conditional acceptance into the College of Medicine, College of Nursing, Department of Physical Therapy or Department of Psychology. South is classified as an institution with a high level of research activity, and students have the opportunity to participate in research activities, even as early as their freshmen year.

The University is strategically located in an international manufacturing hub, providing opportunities for researchers and students to create new knowledge and technologies. The University’s coastal location is a catalyst for innovations in marine science, coastal weather forecasting, coastal resiliency, environmental toxicology and biology. USA researchers are creating new nanomaterials, attracting the interest of Mobile’s burgeoning aerospace industry, while faculty and students

in the College of Medicine and Mitchell Cancer Institute are developing new disease bio-markers and drugs. Extracurricular involvement is strong at South, with more than 200 clubs and organizations to choose from. Aspiring leaders can serve on Student Government and First Year Council, or as Southerners, South’s student ambassadors who sponsor an annual mud volleyball tournament called Oozeball. The University embraces and celebrates its multicultural diversity with events like the Holi Festival and the annual Soul Food Lunch celebrating Black History Month. Students can often be found outside enjoying the beautiful weather playing disc golf, hiking the nature trails on campus or kayaking on nearby Mobile Bay. Community engagement is one of the University’s strategic priorities, and many students spend their time volunteering.

If sports is your thing, Jaguar athletes compete in 17 NCAA Division 1 sports, including baseball, basketball, crosscountry, football, golf, soccer, softball, tennis, track and field, and volleyball. If you’re a fan, you’ll love watching football games at Hancock Whitney Stadium – which is also home to the 68 Ventures Bowl and the Senior Bowl – or cheering on other Sun Belt Conference championship teams like soccer, volleyball and baseball, free of charge when the Jaguars are playing at home. For the casual athlete, the 116,000-squarefoot recreation center offers everything from indoor soccer and swimming to a cardio theater, weight training, basketball and group fitness classes. There’s even a rock-climbing wall!

Nearly 14,000 students call South home and say there’s no place they’d rather be. Schedule a tour today, and see if South is the right fit for you.

Do Something That Matters.

It all begins here at the University of West Alabama, a regional state university in Alabama’s historic Black Belt where you’ll find our greatest strength is the personal attention and support you’ll receive from small classes led by professors who are leaders in their respective fields.

At UWA, you can choose from more than 60 undergraduate and 20 graduate programs taught by nationally recognized, published professors and an 18:1 studentto-instructor ratio in a learning environment that offers students a hands-on, immersive and supportive educational experience.

Seeking the right college means you’re looking for more than just excellent academics; you’re seeking the preparation

you need to make a difference and do something that matters. From service organizations, intramural and varsity athletics, a vibrant international program and Greek Life to clubs and organizations, UWA is about discovery, growth and making new connections that can last a lifetime.

Not every university is for every student — fit matters. Find a university like UWA that fits your personality and assists its student in developing the important qualities of independent thinking and respect for the ideas of others while building firm foundations of personal integrity and character.

“Our students have more opportunities to develop the kind of skills and ability and knowledge that will make them successful, not only while they’re here at UWA, but also in the real world when they get out.”—UWA President Ken Tucker.

Prefer smaller class sizes? UWA has that. Enjoy ample communication with faculty? At UWA, our professors know our students’ names. Appreciate the outdoors and history? Our campus spans more than 600 acres, and boasts a 54-acre fishing paradise, Lake LU, where students can picnic or rent kayaks and paddle boats, and the Alamuchee-Bellamy Covered Bridge, a Sumter County Civil War-era relic relocated decades ago to the campus duck pond.

Visit our campus and you’ll find that UWA is like family — where people invest their own lives to help you make the most of yours.

At UWA you will be surrounded by people who have your best interests in mind. You’ll find all the support you need to be successful, even as you work and play harder than you ever have. And when you finish, you’ll find the skills and experiences you’ve gained while earning your degree will allow you to pursue important work — the kind of work that matters in the lives of others.

DIXIE GIRL

FOR STAYCE HORNE SEREMET, IT ALL STARTED WITH A DOG NAMED DIXIE GIRL

B-METRO.COM 57

THE RESCUER

STAYCE HORNE SEREMET’S PASSION FOR GIVING DOGS

THE LIFE OF LOVE

THEY DESERVE.

58 B-METRO.COM

In 2018 I started Dixie Girl Dog Rescue. Our mission has always been dedicated to finding forever families for unwanted, neglected, abused, and homeless dogs.

Dixie Girl just needed someone to love her.

Stacye Horne Seremet, then a student at Auburn, became that someone.

“I would look around at all these people with dogs. Why would anybody want that responsibility? But there was something that clicked and I was like, I’m going to get a dog. I went to this rural shelter in Alex City and I saw Dixie, and she was an older dog. She had been abused. She was skin and bones at the time. And she had been hit by a car. She had a bum ankle, and there was nothing special about her, but there was something special to me. And I fell in love with her. And I picked her up a few days later. She kind of opened up this whole new world of rescue for me.

”Dixie Girl Dog Rescue was originally inspired by that first Rescue,

How to Get Involved

sweet “Dixie Girl” in 2006,” says Stacye. “Dixie’s story started in that rural shelter, where she was an emaciated, overlooked, adult dog with existing injuries, facing daunting odds of making it out of the shelter alive. Despite what Dixie had endured in her life before me, her unconditional love and capacity for forgiveness was life-changing and instilled a deep desire to extend that same chance to other animals in need.

“After years dedicated to rescuing, fostering, vetting, and placing animals with other rescue organizations, I decided it was time to make a bigger impact and in 2018 I started Dixie Girl Dog Rescue. Our mission has always been dedicated to finding forever families for unwanted, neglected, abused, and homeless dogs. However, over the years, it has become abundantly clear that our secondary objective must

Volunteer- walking, socializing dogs in boarding, transporting, etc.

Foster- during vetting process, weekend warriors/short term, medical recovery

be raising awareness of the critical issues of animal overpopulation and forwarding legislation for mandatory spay/neuter and animal welfare laws in the South.”

Since 2018, Dixie Girl has grown exponentially, saving countless dogs, puppies, and cats from the dire circumstances that many animals are not fortunate enough to escape. All of the animals are completely vetted before adoption, which includes examinations, testing, spaying or neutering, ageappropriate vaccinations, preventatives, and micro-chipping. Many of these animals also require extensive medical attention and it should go without saying that the generous donations of many are the life support of the rescue. However, the amount of animals they can help is and will always be, limited by the number of foster homes available.

Donate- monetary donations, gently used items- collars, leashes, crates, beds, toys etc. Food.

“We invite you to join us in continuing our mission, focused on helping the broken, broken-hearted, neglected, abandoned, and forgotten. We diligently seek committed fosters to provide a nurturing environment during the vetting process and while animals await their forever homes. Dixie Girl does not discriminate on breed or medical status but operates solely as a foster-based rescue. Please consider fostering, adopting, sharing and supporting our efforts. All donations are 100% tax-deductible and go directly to the care and needs of our animals.

Dixie Girl Dog Rescue is a 501c3 public non-profit organization. Our animals are available for adoption both locally and across the United States. DGDR operates a private transport van and makes frequent trips to the Northeast with pre-adopted animals and are happy to facilitate adoptions along our transport route.”

An Archbishop’s Journey An Archbishop’s Journey

“All the assignments I’ve been given have been very satisfying and fulfilling in every way, each one a little different,” he said. “Each one brings a little challenge to adapt to the culture. But once you get over that, you discover that we all have the same goals and aspirations in life.” —Archbishop Marino in an interview in The Scranton Journal

After decades of service in the Vatican diplomatic corps, Archbishop Joseph Marino has come home to Birmingham

It’s a long way from St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in Ensley to a position as the Pope’s representative in Malaysia, but Arhcbishop Jospeh Marino has made that journey and many more.

Archbishop Marino worked in the Vatican diplomatic service from 1988 to 2019 and then served as president of the Pontifical Ecclesiastical Academy until 2023. He became an archbishop in

2008 and represented the Holy See in Malaysia, East Timor, and Brunei for six years.

Born in Birmingham in 1953, one of three sons of Salvador Marino, an electrical engineer, and Josephine Marino. He grew up in Ensley and graduated from John Carroll High School in Birmingham in 1971. After high school. Marino earned degrees in

philosophy and psychology from the University of Scranton in Scranton, Pennsylvania.

Marino was ordained a priest in 1979, for the Diocese of Birmingham.

In an addiitonal academic pursuit, Marino studied theology and biblical theology at the Pontifical Gregorian University while living at the Pontifical North American College from 1975 to

64 B-METRO.COM

His early assignments included stints in the Philippines, Uruguay, and Nigeria. From 1997 to 2004, Marino worked at the Secretariat of State in Rome, where he had responsibility for the Balkan countries.

During the Kosovo war, he accompanied the Vatican’s foreign minister Archbishop Jean-Louis Tauran, to a meeting with Serbian President Slobodan Milosevic on a peace effort on behalf of Pope John Paul II.

In 2003, on the eve of the Iraq war, he accompanied Cardinal Pio Laghi to Washington, D.C., to meet President George W. Bush on another peace mission on behalf of Pope John Paul II—a last-ditch effort to prevent that war.

Marino was working in the United Kingdom when Pope Benedict XVI named him a titular archbishop and apostolic nuncio to Bangladesh. He was consecrated as Archbishop in 2008, at the Cathedral of St. Paul in Birmingham.[

Later Pope Benedict appointed Marino as apostolic nuncio to Malaysia, apostolic nuncio to East Timor, and apostolic delegate to Brunei.

“With Malaysia, diplomatic relations had just begun, and they sent me there to get it going. The primary role of the Vatican ambassador, who’s called Nuncio, is to be the constant and stable link between the Pope and the local church.

magnetism, the whole world was eager to have diplomatic relations with the Holy See,” Archbishop Marino says. “at the present time, I think that we have relations with almost 185 countries.”

One of his final diplomatic assignments was to serve as president of the Pontifical Ecclesiastical Academy, which is the school for foreign service that trains the future diplomats of the Vatican. Pope Francis named Marino president of the Pontifical Ecclesiastical Academy in 2019. He was the second American to lead the school.

The insitution was founded in 1701, “since the Pope already in the fourth, and fifth century was sending envoys to countries, to the bishops in those countries, and to the governments.

“It’s one of the oldest diplomatic services in the world,” Marino says.

Since its founding, some 1,800 Holy See diplomats have graduated from the academy, among them five popes: Clement XIII (1714), Leo XII (1783), Leo XIII (1832), Benedict XV (1879) and Paul VI (1921).

In 20 years, Archbishop Marino served in countries on four continents.

Marino joined the Vatican diplomatic service in the summer of 1988.

“When John Paul II became Pope, I think we had relations with 60 or 70 countries. And because of his presence,

“All the assignments I’ve been given have been very satisfying and fulfilling in every way, each one a little different,” he told the Scranton journal. “Philippines, Uruguay, Nigeria, Rome, London, Bangladesh, Malaysia, Timor-leste (East Timor), each one brings a little challenge to adapt to the culture. But once you get over that, you discover that we all have the same goals and aspirations in life.”

R e b o r n

In our March 2022 edition of B-Metro, we introduced readers to the passionate work of Beverly McNeil, a longtime fixture in the Birmingham art world and longtime supporter of The Lovelady Center. Portraits of Hope began with the launch of the coffee table book and traveling exhibit featuring a collection of original portraiture

Brittnie Piteo’s journey from darkness to light.

66 B-METRO.COM

Brittnie Piteo is one of the Lovelady Center graduates featured in the upcoming second Portraits of Hope book. The book will feature 20 additional Lovelady graduates with their stories in their own words.

by many of the world’s greatest portrait artists centering on graduates of The Lovelady Center.

Nineteen months later, Portraits of Hope continues to impact the lives of Lovelady graduates. Working closely with Lovelady Center staff, the organization has helped 90 graduates with over $100,000 in significant grants. Some of the needs that funding addresses include paying back fines so driver’s licenses can be restored, paying unpaid utility fees to help reestablish services, assisting with tuition to aid in advancing careers, and providing down payments for vehicles to provide reliable transportation to and from work. In some cases, Portraits of Hope will cover the cost of fines and fees associated with previous offenses before their time at the Lovelady Center.

“I started using at 16 and ended up dropping out of school.” Says Brittnie Piteo, a graduate and now employee at The Lovelady Center. “I started working fast food jobs and had a string of abusive boyfriends. I started harder drugs at 21.”

Abusive relationships, drug addiction, two pregnancies, and two attempts at rehab later, Brittany found herself homeless and on the streets.

“I slept under bridges or wherever I could find shelter, ” Piteo explains. “I started doing crack cocaine and joined up with a drug dealer. I caught a lot of charges for possession and distribution in Birmingham City and Jefferson County.”

Finally, her time ran out. In 2018, Piteo appeared before a district court judge who told her the system was done with her being in and out of the courtrooms. He decided to sentence her to prison. “It was the best decision anyone could have made for me then.”

Once out, Piteo attempted to return to her former life, but the Lord had a different plan. On March 11, 2019, she entered The Lovelady Center and has been clean from drugs and alcohol ever since.

While at the Center, Piteo earned her GED and earned certification as a Child Development Associate through Ashworth College, is certified through the state as a child care provider and is fully restored to her children. Piteo lives in a Lovelady Center graduate housing program called Community Gardens.

Upon graduation, Piteo was saddled with over $15,000 in debts from previous charges and fines with Birmingham City

and Jefferson County.

“Portraits of Hope is amazing.” Piteo shares. “They paid a jail fine I owed at Jefferson County and for another criminal case. It lifted a huge burden that was on me. At the time I graduated, I was mailing in four different money orders a month to Jefferson County. There was so much. It was so overwhelming.”

“When I filled out the paperwork for Portraits of Hope, I had already been a graduate for two years. I wept when I found out they were going to help me. They let me know I wasn’t forgotten about. They showed me there was hope and that people still cared for me.”

Piteo is working hard to build her financial future. She has paid her debt down to $1,000 and is working with a financial advisor to build her credit. She’s even working with a lender through her church so she can purchase her first home.

Brittnie Piteo is one of the Lovelady Center graduates featured in the upcoming second Portraits of Hope book. The book will feature 20 additional Lovelady graduates with their stories in their own words. Bart Lindstrom, Brittnie’s portraiture artist, is nationally recognized and is represented by Portraits, Inc. A southern Californian, Lindstrom’s work hangs in federal courthouses, state capitals, prestigious galleries, corporate conference rooms, and private homes. Now, his work will show among other portraits of Lovelady Center graduates.

Since March 2022, Portraits of Hope has provided financial support to graduates of the Lovelady Center (www. loveladycenter.org). The organization strives to build on the graduates’ successes while at the Lovelady Center and to help remove barriers that can hinder women in their journey to becoming productive members of their communities.

A separate 501c3, the organization raises funds to provide these significant grants. On December 14th in partnership with the Samford University Wright Center, Portraits of Hope presented nationally known Christian recording artist Charles Billingsley in concert The concert was held at Samford University Wright Center. Billingsley was joined by the incomparable Sadie Goodman and Denver and The Mile High Orchestra. Information about the event and how you can donate is available at www.portraitsofhope.charity. All proceeds benefit Portraits of Hope.

The Filmmaker

After his own health scare, Birmingham filmmaker Harris Josey captures a relentless journey of vengeance, honor and survival in his film, The Seal of Death.

Harris Josey is a writer/director based out of Birmingham. He is a graduate of Birmingham-Southern College with a BA in Media Production. Harris has directed short films such as “The Seal of Death” and “The Big Shave,” and has done commercial work for companies such as Beach Better Co. and Reno Refractories, Inc.

After directing “The Seal of Death” and winning several awards including Paris International Film Awards for “Best Thriller” and “Best VFX,” Harris was rushed to the hospital and diagnosed with a large brain aneurysm that would change his life forever. Two brain surgeries and the work of the UAB medical staff saved Harris’ life. During his stay in the hospital, Harris grew closer to God and had time to think about the things that matter most to him, his family and friends.

With a new perspective on life, Harris set out to make his next short film, “The Seal of Death 2,” his most ambitious project yet. This film allowed him to grow as a director and work with industry veterans like producers Jay Galloway, Bernadette Chapman, Tasha McCrory and many more. In addition to Sidewalk Film Festival and Cine Paris, Josey has plans for “The Seal of Death 2” to be released to other festival circuits as well.

The film has already won “Best Thriller” and “Best Trailer” at the Cine Paris Film Festival and was officially selected into their main/annual film festival. Cine Paris is an international film festival in Paris reuniting artists, creatives and filmmakers, focusing on discovering new talents and works.

The Seal of Death 2, shot in Birmingham, takes advantage of some of the city’s most beautiful architectural structures, including The Masonic Temple Building downtown. The building is situated in the middle of the Fourth Avenue business district and was one of the few commercial areas of town where African Americans owned businesses during the civil rights era and were welcomed into restaurants, pharmacies and clothing stores. The “Seal of Death 2” fight scenes were filmed in the Lodge Room of the building showcasing its beautiful hues of blue and historical architecture. The audience

instantly feels like they are stepping into a time machine, but still as if inside a New York City warehouse building.

In “The Seal of Death 2,” the audience is reunited with Tony Han, a former detective haunted by his past from “The Seal of Death.” He receives a letter threatening his honor and life and is determined to face the one person responsible, Shang Lee, The Head of the Yakuza. Han embarks on a dangerous quest for justice, teaming up with NYPD Captain Winnie Ford, sister of his late partner Marcus. The two devise a daring plan to infiltrate Lee’s Yakuza Base in New York.

The adrenaline-fueled pursuit leads them to an abandoned warehouse, where they confront Kuma Haga, one of the Yakuza’s regional bosses. Through a thrilling chase, they coerce him into granting them safe entry into the heavily guarded base. Disguised as captured prisoners, Han and Ford are escorted past the guards, inching closer to their ultimate showdown.

As they breach the Throne Room, the tension reaches its all time high. Lee, seemingly unfazed by their presence, stands as a formidable adversary. A dramatic clash ensues, with Haga sacrificing himself in a futile attempt to defeat Lee. The encounter escalates, and the protagonists find themselves with no way out but to engage in a life-or-death battle.

“‘The Seal of Death 2’ is a thrilling roller coaster ride that will captivate audiences from start to finish,” says Josey. “We wanted to take the foundations laid in the original film and elevate them to new heights to immerse viewers in a world filled with danger, honor and redemption. I couldn’t be more proud of the incredible cast and crew who brought this vision to life. ‘The Seal of Death 2’ showcases remarkable performances by our actors, who bring their characters to life with authenticity and depth.”

As Han, Andrew Vilar portrays a haunted hero consumed by the pursuit of justice, while Kristen Kinder delivers a fierce and determined portrayal of Captain Winnie Ford. Together, they create a dynamic duo that resonates with audiences on an emotional level.

Firehouse Ministries

Firehouse Ministries, established in 1983, fosters a nurturing environment and delivers comprehensive services tailored to address the diverse needs of men experiencing chronic homelessness—leading the state in serving this population. Operating as a low-barrier shelter, we welcome individuals with significant housing challenges, offering accommodations based on active efforts to transition out of homelessness rather than imposing strict criteria.

Firehouse addresses various inequities through workshops on AIDS awareness, health clinics, GED courses, literacy classes, employment counseling, life skills training, job placement, and a therapeutic fine arts program. One of our most significant contributions is our medical respite program, providing a humane discharge plan for homeless men who are too sick to live on the street but not sick enough to be hospitalized. Firehouse is the only shelter in Alabama and one of only eight in the country funded by the CDC to offer this vital service.

In addition to our comprehensive services, Firehouse Ministries provides overnight shelter and housing for homeless men throughout Birmingham, including permanent supportive housing for men with serious mental illness. Our day program offers a meal, a shower, and clean clothing to anyone in need.

Committed to serving the most vulnerable members of Jefferson County’s homeless population, our approach emphasizes person-centered case management, ensuring dignity and respect for each individual. We prioritize assistance for those facing barriers such as mental illness or substance use, extending support even when other agencies are unable to do so.

Mission Statement

Forge supports, empowers, and improves medical access and outcomes for Alabama breast cancer patients, survivors, and those who love them from the day of diagnosis through the rest of life.

Highlights

In 2023:

• Directly supported 1,743 breast cancer patients and survivors in 51 counties.

• Provided $28,000 through Hardship Fund to help with utilities, rent, etc.

• Provided $14,000 in gas cards to get patients to medical appointments.

• Provided $16,500 in grocery cards to provide patients with nutritious food.

• Provided 306 free mental health counseling sessions and 1,659 rides to medical appointments.

Whether you are a breast cancer patient, survivor, or someone who loves one, Forge is here to help. We know that being diagnosed with breast cancer in Alabama is especially hard. As one of only 11 states that has chosen not to expand Medicaid and with the closing of 7 rural hospitals (with 16 more on the brink), Alabamians are being forced to travel an average of 90 miles each way for chemo, radiation, and surgery, and to rely on nonprofits to provide them with access to cancer healthcare and resources. Forge does just that - we step into the void, providing individualized supportive services to anyone impacted by breast cancer in Alabama. No matter where you live in Alabama, Forge is there for you. And for your loved ones, too.

Forged in collaboration and sustained by community, Forge began in 2014 as the Breast Cancer Survivorship Rehabilitation Initiative (BCSRI), an initiative of the Women’s Breast Health Fund of the Community Foundation of Greater Birmingham. Its purpose was to research breast cancer survivorship needs in central Alabama. Results of a community-wide assessment revealed gaps and barriers from point of diagnosis throughout the balance of life. As a result, Forge Breast Cancer Survivor Center was launched in 2016 as a unique collaborative pilot project of the Women’s Breast Health Fund at the Community Foundation of Greater Birmingham and the four major health care systems in central Alabama: Ascension St. Vincent’s, UAB Health System, Brookwood Baptist Health, and Grandview Medical Center. Its purpose was to provide wrap-around supportive services within the breast cancer community.

In 2020, Forge was incorporated as a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization as Forge Survivorship Center but continues to do our work as Forge Breast Cancer Survivor Center. Forge offers strength by creating personalized survivorship plans and pairing clients with volunteer mentors to listen and accompany them to appointments; provides resources such as health and wellness classes, professional mental health counseling and gas cards for transportation to appointments; and works to build a community of survivors and volunteers to Forge a new future together.

Mission

Hope for Autumn Foundation

Hope for Autumn Foundation’s mission is to provide new hope and assistance for families battling childhood cancer, to support innovative research in childhood cancer therapies, and to increase community awareness of childhood cancer and cutting-edge treatment options.

Highlights

Since 2012, HFAF has assisted childhood cancer families with over $500,000.

Since 2012, HFAF has provided over $300,000 to childhood cancer research.

HFAF organizes the largest childhood cancer awareness day in the state in September, called Give Hope Day

HFAF has been voted Hoover’s Best Local Cause in 2018, 2019, 2020, 2021, and 2022.

HFAF began as a small backyard crawfish boil held to raise money for a family whose daughter, Autumn, was battling leukemia. The crawfish boil grew over the years in size and revenue, and in 2012, Hope for Autumn Foundation was founded as a 501(c)3 public charity. Previously, the foundation was able to assist one to three families per year, once a year, with the crawfish boil revenue. Currently, HFAF accepts financial assistance applications year round from families from the Alabama region that are battling childhood cancer. The funds raised by HFAF also directly benefit Alabama’s Center for Childhood Cancer and Blood Disorder’s Developmental Therapeutics program, which is a cuttingedge research and treatment program located in Birmingham at Children’s Hospital of Alabama. This program serves the children with incurable cancers, providing treatments that are not widely available. Finally, HFAF works to raise awareness of childhood cancer simply because awareness leads to funding, and funding leads to cures.

Mission Statement

Our Promise is to provide recovery from the root causes of homelessness through our proven process of compassion, guidance and accountability grounded in Christian faith.

Highlights

In 2023, Jimmie Hale served 644 clients in our full-time programs, provided over 173,000 meals, and hosted 22 warming stations.

For 80 years, the Jimmie Hale Mission has been helping those caught in the grasp of homelessness to escape life on the street and become healthy members of the community. Today, in its three facilities, the Jimmie Hale Mission feeds, clothes, houses, counsels, provides back-to-life vocational and social services, and ministers to around 150 men, women, and children every day of the year. Anchored by its downtown Birmingham Shepura Men’s Center which serves 80 men, Jimmie Hale Mission also serves 45 men at Royal Pines, its rural center in Blount County, and 30 women and children at Jessie’s Place, also in downtown Birmingham.

Jimmie Hale’s comprehensive approach begins with an initial 16-week residential program that provides clients with the tools they need to transform their lives. Trained counselors and recovery coaches work individually and in small groups to help clients develop five areas of personal health: physical, mental, relational, vocational and spiritual. Program topics include how to put together a life plan, making value-based decisions, healthy relationships, emotional maturity, anger management, parenting, and family stabilization. Additionally, because recent statistics reveal that more and more of the homeless population in our community is plagued by substance abuse, Jimmie Hale has added specific programming to help clients gain control over their addictions. This Active Recovery program is an in-depth, clinically-structured Christian approach to helping individuals understand and overcome the very issues that contribute to their substance abuse. By addressing these deeper challenges, Jimmie Hale helps its clients once again become self-sufficient, productive citizens. Jimmie Hale also provides an educational curriculum through its learning centers at each campus which includes adult basic education, GED preparation, and workplace development, as well as training for accredited short-term, industry-based certifications, and college enrollment. Following graduation from the initial 16-week program, clients are encouraged to stay in the Continuum of Care program which allows them to receive continued supportive services while they begin working and/or going to school.

Laura Crandall Brown Foundation

In 2009, Laura Crandall Brown passed away at the age of 25 from ovarian cancer. Her loving and courageous spirit inspired her friends and family to create the Laura Crandall Brown Foundation to honor her life, memory, and vision of helping others.

Today, LCBF works across Alabama to fulfill its threefold mission: offering hope through early detection research of ovarian cancer, empowering communities through gynecologic cancer awareness, and enriching lives through patient support. LCBF programming helps women with a GYN cancer diagnosis overcome barriers to care in order to increase quality of life and help with everyday financial needs through CanSurvive group meetings and Woman-to-Woman mentoring.

Mission

The mission of the Laura Crandall Brown Foundation (LCBF) is offering hope through research for early detection of ovarian cancer, empowering communities through gynecologic cancer awareness, and enriching lives through patient support.

Highlights

The Laura Crandall Brown Foundation has been approved by the Alabama Legislature for a specialty car tag. We are fortunate in that we have had several generous donors who have agreed to sponsor the cost of the tags for anyone who would like one for their car, truck or motorcycle at no cost for this first year for the first 500 people who purchase the tag.

Upcoming Events

The CanSurvive support group hosts meetings monthly to provide educational and recreational opportunities, as well as vital emotional support for patients, caregivers, family members, and healthcare providers. The support group also provides assistance with patient needs including transportation to treatment, utility assistance, and other basic needs that may arise due to financial stress experienced by patients during their cancer journey. 410

So, your first year is at no charge and then, for year two and beyond, the cost will be $50.00 + taxes & fees. LCBF will receive $41.25 of every $50.00 tag purchased and renewed to fund our patient support programs. The funds generated by this car tag will assure we can meet the growing needs of GYN cancer patients and their families who struggle to make ends meets while undergoing treatment.

Once we reach our goal, we will be able to update the design of the tag. This will include every color which represents all five GYN cancers. For more information, please contact Meg McGlamery, LCBF executive director, at m.mcglamery@thinkoflaura.org.

Get Busy Fighting Golf Tournament Thursday, May 9, 2024 at Highland Golf Course. Presented by Viva Health Ginny Bourland passed away in 2017 from Ovarian Cancer. During her five-and-a-half year battle, she always maintained a positive attitude, and she worked tirelessly as an advocate for GYN cancer research and awareness. This golf tournament honors Ginny and her legacy, and we hope you’ll join us..

Smile–A–Mile

Smile-A-Mile started in 1985 as a summer camp for children in Alabama with cancer. Over the years, the organization has grown to be a year-round program serving children and their families from diagnosis, during treatment and through the years beyond. A childhood cancer diagnosis impacts the entire family.

Unfortunately, once a child completes treatment, the cancer journey does not end for the child or the family. There are often lifelong emotional and physical side effects of treatment. Smile-A-Mile is dedicated to providing these survivors and their families with a

sense of normalcy, improved mental well-being and tools to help them cope with the disease no matter where they are in their journey. These year-round programs focus on bringing the family together while also meeting the unique needs of patients, survivors, parents and siblings. Smile-A-Mile’s home, Smile-AMile Place, is located in Birmingham but programs reach families from throughout the state. There is no other organization in Alabama serving this population with fully comprehensive programming for the entire family.

Fundraising

Mission

Smile-A-Mile’s mission is to provide hope, healing of the spirit and love for the whole family during the childhood cancer journey. Through year-round meaningful and educational programming, Smile-A-Mile helps those in Alabama who are affected by childhood cancer thrive during treatment and the years beyond.

Highlights

All programs Smile-A-Mile offers are provided at no cost to families.

Through our Hospital Outreach Program, Smile-A-Mile provides both inpatient and outpatient programming to patients and their families.

We’ve awarded patients and survivors over a million dollars in scholarships for post-secondary education.

Smile-A-Mile serves families all across Alabama. Our Regional Outreach Program provides programming in areas with the highest numbers of families, including Tuscaloosa, Huntsville/Decatur, Auburn/ Opelika, Montgomery, Dothan and Birmingham.

We are dedicated to continuing support for bereaved families through programming, support groups, remembrance ceremonies and keepsakes that serve as tangible reminders of their children.

Mission STAIR (Start The Adventure in Reading) is a one-onone tutoring program that empowers students to read better and dream bigger.

Volunteer tutors dedicate 1 or 2 hours weekly, using a structured curriculum to nurture young readers. Operating for nearly 25 years, STAIR witnesses students flourish into confident readers. Breuna’s inspiring journey exemplifies the impact of dedicated volunteers. Needing reading assistance in 1st grade, Breuna, who was initially placed on a waiting list due to a shortage of tutors, saw a positive turn when a volunteer finally answered the call. Breuna advanced to grade level by the end of that year, retained her skills over the summer, and returned to STAIR an even stronger reader in 2nd grade. Breuna’s story underscores the program’s efficacy in transforming struggling readers into avid learners. Join STAIR in shaping a brighter academic future for children like Breuna. 3703 5th Ave S.
