Tips and Tricks for Surviving Freshman Year Written by Lindsey Lowe If you’ve heard that your four years in college are some of the best of your life, then you’ve heard right. College is fun and exhilarating and, at times, terrifying—after all, it’s a whole new world. Whether you’re traveling miles away from home for school or just a few down the road, there are so many unknowns. Luckily, you don’t have to do it alone. On the following pages, hear what advice current students and college grads have for freshman; they share everything from how to make new friends to how to develop study habits. Before you know it, you’ll be an old college pro!

Health If you’ve heard anything about college, you’ve heard about the infamous freshman 15. Everyone goes in assuming that the freshman 15 is about as real as dreaming that you’ll sleep through an exam. Well, the truth is that the freshman 15 is a real thing.

(Everyone really does have that dream, too.)

The key to hitting sophomore year without extra weight is being proactive about your health.

Just Say No

One thing nobody told me about college is that there’s food everywhere. College kids 138

are notoriously poor, and everyone knows that the way to get them to show up is food. You’ll find pizza at the SGA meeting, cookies at the dorm hangout, and free lunch offered by the campus ministry. It’s fine to indulge in some of these treats, but try to pick and choose the ones that you’ll really enjoy. Chances are, you’ll also find food everywhere on campus, particularly in the dining halls. It’s a little bit like the candy land in Charlie and the Chocolate Factory—everywhere you look, there’s more food! It’s easy to go overboard (especially if your dining hall’s banana pudding was as good as Lakeside Dining Hall’s at the University of Alabama my freshman year.)

So choose wisely; sure, indulge on pizza and tacos sometimes, but also find your dining hall’s healthy options; these days, there are tons of them. Most halls have offer a fresh salad bar, sauteed vegetables as sides, and a sandwich station where you can customize a healthy lunch. And many include nutritional info alongside their dishes, so be on the lookout for that.

Feel the Burn

Of course, another way to ward off the freshman 15 is to burn all that pizza off (which is, admittedly, easier said than done). But there are lots of ways to get active on college campuses. Almost all of

them have recreational centers where you can hop on cardio machines, take a yoga class, or hit up the weights. The best way to make sure you have time to make a workout is to prepare—pack a change of clothes and schedule a gym date between classes with a friend. If you’re not someone who loves the gym, sign up for an intramural sports team, which is also a great way to meet friends and have designated free time each week.

And don’t take the bus!

Relieve the Stress

The important thing is to get moving, which is beneficial on many levels. Daniel Morales, a recent grad, says it’s a great way to keep from getting stressed out (which can, in turn, push you to eat more). “Physical health can help with your mental health.

It is easy to get frustrated and stressed out when you have a lot of school work. At this point, you might feel overwhelmed. One way to get out that stress is to work out,

go for a run, and just find something that helps you deal with the stress,” Morales says. “Take care of yourself physically and you will be able to help manage your stress.”

Friends Perhaps the thing college rookies worry about most is finding friends. Sometimes, if we’re lucky, we know people who chose the same college as we did. Often, however, we have to start all over again making friends,

Learn to Say Yes

There are definitely ways, though, to jump in and begin making connections.

The first is to say yes. Unless you’re a social butterfly, it can be hard to venture out to things without at least one buddy. But there might be times when you have to go to things alone to find your buddies. In the first few weeks, there are tons of different activities to get students involved with one another. So figure out what you like and then take a deep breath and just go.

For me, it was deciding to go on a dinner outing with a community service group I worked with my first week of school. I was so nervous—I didn’t know anyone. But that night, I met two of my best friends. It’s worth it to be brave!

Find Your People

You’re Not Alone

The most important thing to remember is that for the first few weeks, everyone is in the same boat; whether they know people or not, everyone is searching for the place where they fit. So though there may be times when you feel alone, you’re not the only one. And sometimes all you need is to remember that—It makes it a lot easier to strike up conversation with the girl behind

There will be people there who don’t look like you, act like you, or think like you.

This is great for everyone; it encourages growth in maturity and perspective and teaches you how to treat others who may have different mindsets than you. However, you’ll often become friends with people who have some sort of overlap with you.

Maybe you like to watch foreign films.

Maybe you’re looking for a place that encourages your spiritual growth. Maybe you want to play soccer three times a week.

Whatever it is, chances are that there’s some sort of group or club doing that (and if not, there are likely other people who would like to, so maybe you can start one.) Seek these people and organizations out, because you’re already guaranteed to have things in common, which is a great icebreaker. And remember, it can be lots of fun! “It’s good to let loose every now and then. You’ll never be 20-something again. So get active with on and off campus groups and grow your social network and enjoy college,” advises Laura Hurst, a recent graduate.

Ask to Borrow a Pencil

Of course, every day you’ll be coming in contact with lots of your peers in class.

While it can be really easy to sit back and remain anonymous (especially in big lecture

halls), you can also use the time before or after class to strike up conversation with those around you. This is particularly helpful once you get into the classes that pertain to your major. As a journalism and English major, I was surrounded by people who wanted to chat about books and writing all the time. Sometimes, afterclass chatting turn into coffee dates, which turned into real friendships.

Class Your parents have probably already told you this, but the reason you’re at school is to, you know, get an education. The workload and demands of some classes may be more than you expected, and when you add it all together, it can get overwhelming.

And while it’s inevitable for that to happen sometimes, there are things you can do to ward against stress and manage your work efficiently.

Write It Down

Trust me: You want to get a planner.

With so many different assignments due and classes on different days (plus labs, group meetings, professor office hours, and extracurricular activities), things can get confusing quickly, and when that happens, it’s easy to let something slip through the cracks. The safest way to avoid that is to invest in a planner that fits your needs (for me, it was important to be able to see a whole week’s worth of assignments at once.) You can also use Google Calendar and sync it up to your phone if you’d prefer to do things electronically. Once you have your system down, make sure you utilize it—I liked to use the syllabus to write the whole semester’s assignments in at the beginning. Then I didn’t have to worry about forgetting to do it, and I could see what was coming weeks out.

Know Your Style

If you’ve never explored the different learning styles, start there. There are lots of different resources online to help you decipher the way you best receive information. Once you figure that out, learn how to cater to your learning style.

you’re less likely to get distracted and you can pay attention. If you’re a kinesthetic learner, find some practice quizzes for your subject. If you’re more visual, try writing out your notes. There are many different ways of learning and studying, and finding the way that best suits you early on will serve you throughout your entire college career.

Study Smart

You can apply your learning style to your study habits as well, which will help you figure out the best methods for retaining the information. It’s also important for you to figure out the times and places that you study best. I knew I didn’t function at all when I didn’t get much sleep, so I had to wake up early instead of staying up late.

And find a place that seems like a “studying place.” It’s often so hard to stay awake while studying in your bedroom because that’s where you go to sleep! I always went to a coffee shop and popped in my headphones, which signaled to my brain that it was time to study. “A couple of the hardest things to do as a freshman are staying focused and managing time well. There are so many distractions—clubs, football, being away from home without adult supervision— that with this newfound freedom, students simply have trouble sorting it all out and staying on task,” says David Allen with the Tutoring Club in Cahaba Heights.

Finances Everyone knows college students are poor, right? Well, while it’s true that there’s not much cash flow while you’re in school, you don’t have to eat ramen noodles every night if you learn how to budget your income.

Get a Job

Obviously the best way to manage your income is to acquire some income in the first place. College campuses are great places to find a job because they understand the

Make a Budget

This might be your first foray into the world of managing your own money, and it’s a good time to learn (chances are, Mom and Dad are still around to help you as you figure it out.) College is a transitional time—at the end, you’re an adult!—and now’s the time to work out the kinks. Once you’re living in the “real world,” you’ll be glad you figured it out now. So take a look at how much you have, what you’re spending, and what you’re spending it on. Then get to work making budgets for the things you know you’ll spend on (for example, I have to have a coffee shop budget every month.)

There are lots of resources online for this (mint.com is a good one), or you can just use a spreadsheet.

Attend a Workshop

Don’t Freak Out

Even the very best students sometimes drop the ball. “You’re going to make mistakes, like sleeping through a final or missing a deadline. Don’t be too hard on yourself, because even the most organized and studious people (including myself ) do that,” says Hurst. “Be honest with your parents and your advisers when you have issues, because they will have good advice about how to make decisions for your college career.” When you mess up, take a deep breath and put it in perspective: One failed test or bad paper isn’t going to wreck your college career. But like Hurst says, if you find yourself struggling habitually, it might be time to seek out some help.

Advisers, counselors, and professors are all there to help you succeed, and they’re all trained to help students.

College is a whole new world. But there are lots of resources to help you figure out the ways to be successful, and lots of people around who care about you. Never be afraid to say you need some help, even if it’s just asking for directions around campus.

And one day, when you’re a wise, seasoned sophomore and you see the kid riding the bus around in circles because he hasn’t quite figured out the system, lend him some help, OK?

Samford University is Alabama’s top-ranked private university and provides nationally recognized academic programs rooted in its historic Christian mission. FOUNDED IN 1896, the University of Montevallo is located in the community of Montevallo, approximately 35 miles south of Birmingham.

Red brick walks and drives crisscross the breathtaking campus, which boasts three antebellum structures and more than 25 buildings on the National Register of Historic Places. The central part of campus is a National Historic District.

With the look and feel of a small, private college, the University of Montevallo, a public university with an enrollment of approximately 3,000 students, offers one of the best values in higher education in Alabama. Here students from virtually every county in Alabama, as well as from other states and 17 countries, learn in an educational environment that boasts a student/faculty ratio of 16:1 and an average class size of 21.

Montevallo offers academic programs in four colleges: arts and sciences, business, education and fine arts. Students choose
