FROM THE EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR As I write, it is early March and it is beginning to snow again! But the daffodil shoots bravely poking up outside the door tell me that Spring will soon be here and the Willistown countryside will be bursting with promise once more. Already, the farm staff at Rushton Farm have thousands of seedlings started in the greenhouses, the Bird Conservation staff is preparing for the return of spring migrants to the banding station, habitat restoration and trail projects are underway, schools are calling to bring students out to the countryside to connect with nature, and landowners are working with staff to protect more land. There is excitement in the air not only for spring, but for seeing our programs grow and flourish due to the ongoing success of Willistown Countryside Forever, our $8 million Campaign for Land, People and Nature. Thanks to the remarkable generosity of many individual donors and foundations, the Chester County Preservation Partnership Program, the PA Department of Conservation and Natural Resources (DCNR) and the Pew Charitable Trusts, the campaign has raised $4.9 million enabling the Trust to expand the Rushton Woods Preserve from 30 to 86 acres including the acquisition of the adjacent White Farmhouse parcel which will provide much needed housing for Rushton Farm staff and interns. The next phase of the campaign will provide financial stability for the Trust well into the future and will enable the construction of an exciting new Research and Education building at Rushton Woods Preserve. The barn-like timber frame building (see pg. 8) will provide multi-functional space, including a teaching kitchen for farm-to-table cooking demonstrations and a large gathering room. It will serve as a research and learning center from school children to graduate students - focusing on our farming practices at Rushton Farm (sustainable farming in concert with nature), our burgeoning bird-banding and bird conservation work and critical native habitat restoration projects. It will provide a wonderful resource for our Willistown area neighbors as well as a destination for the region. A place where everyone can benefit from the “good nature” provided by our rich reservoir of preserved lands here in Willistown. I hope you will enjoy the articles in this issue of The Sycamore, share the excitement that our staff and Trustees are feeling about Willistown and the Trust’s bright future, and embrace along with us the remainder of the Willistown Countryside Forever campaign. For more information about any aspect of our work or the campaign please feel free to call or email me at bva@wctrust.org.

FROM THE BEGINNING OF THE TRUST’S COMMUNITY FARM PROGRAM IN 2007, its unique approach to “farming with nature” laid the groundwork for a synergism of research and educational opportunities. Lisa Kiziuk, the Trust’s Assistant Director of Stewardship at the time, was interested in measuring local bird populations’ response to the sustainable agricultural practices employed at the farm. What she found was surprising— and contrary to what many might have predicted. Increased bird counts indicated that in addition to providing healthy, local food for the community, Rushton Farm’s “agroecological” practices were actually enhancing the surrounding ecosystem of the newly created 80-acre Rushton Woods Preserve. This finding marked the beginning of the Trust’s wildly popular Bird Conservation Program, and its federally licensed bird banding station that now attracts thousands of students and visitors each year. These programs that use our protected land to promote “local food and feathers” demonstrate an inspiring conservation approach that also attracts graduate students, budding scientists, land conservation professionals and aspiring farmers from all over the country who want to study Rushton’s model. At the same time, habitat restoration projects throughout Rushton Woods Preserve under the supervision of Bill Hartman, Director of Stewardship, provide additional opportunities to enhance and assess water quality, woodland health, and biodiversity. Native wildflower meadow installations, native shrub plantings, and woodland restoration projects are just a few of the initiatives that draw researchers and students alike to our preserves who come to learn about land stewardship practices and measure their effects on the surrounding ecosystem. Funding from the Willistown Countryside Forever campaign will provide enhanced support and a home for these burgeoning programs. We’ll be able to strengthen and formalize many of our offerings and become a critical resource for the broader conservation community. With the construction of the new Conservation Research and Education Center (see sketch on page 8), we’ll extend the Trust’s conservation research and education activities to all seasons. The result will usher in the next chapter of conservation for Willistown, creating a platform upon which to inspire the next generation of conservationists in Willistown and beyond. SPRING 2014 | 7

A R T F U L W I L L I S TO W N The power of combining art and science to advance the
As our world becomes increasingly industrial and technological, people are losing their connection to nature. American children now spend fewer than seven minutes per day in unstructured outdoor play, while spending over seven hours in front of an electronic screen. This makes our work as a conservation organization increasingly more difficult as we strive to inspire people to conserve and protect our natural world. Faced with these challenges, how do we change people’s views about nature? Today science is the dominant force behind the environmental movement, but it is often criticized as dry and intellectual. One of the most effective ways to break down the barrier of this perception lies in the discipline of art, which in all its forms has the power to change the way people look at the living world. For example, John James Audubon’s Birds of America (1838) forged the way for artists and scientists alike to increase our understanding of birds. Known as the “Father of the National Park System,” Thomas Moran’s depictions of Yellowstone inspired congress to form our first national park. No one has been able to articulate the “wilderness idea” as well as Ansel Adams with his magnificent photographs that captured the mystique and importance of preserving the last remaining wild lands. In today’s conservation climate art and science make natural partners. Although differences between the two exist, art makes science more compelling and unlocks the potential for more people to gain access. Lisa Kiziuk, Director of the Trust’s Bird Conservation Program, experienced this firsthand while teaching a graduate field ecology course to students from the University of Pennsylvania at Rushton Woods Preserve last fall. By requiring the students to keep field journals, the students made observations in interesting and unexpected ways. Often students are taught to look at concepts in a narrow realm of facts, derived from the scientific process which tells only one side of the environmental story, which is largely an intellectual one. Encouraging students to write and illustrate field observations cultivates a special attention to the landscape. With practice, students go beyond making passive observations and engage actively with the natural world where they learn to think more deeply about the environment around them. The art of taking field notes also provides a place for play, excitement, awe and experimentation. Traditionally, college course instruction is content-heavy, leaving many students with little opportunity for creativity and personal expression. When students draw or find words for descriptions in their field notes, their attention to the natural world becomes transformative.

The Trust has successfully developed gateways to conservation that consistently reach and inspire new audiences in a more effective manner. By working with community members and students from grade school through graduate school we have discovered that integrating concepts from science and art foster an understanding of how people connect with the outdoors. With the emphasis on our Bird Conservation and Community Farm programs, the use of art makes conservation more relevant and forges deeper connections with nature. SPRING 2014 13

nd TWO GENEROUS LANDOWNERS CONTINUE THE WILLISTOWN CONSERVATION TRADITION BY PERMANENTLY PROTECTING 175 ACRES FROM DEVELOPMENT THROUGH DONATION OF CONSERVATION EASEMENTS TO THE TRUST.

Brushwood Stable THIRTY YEARS IN THE MAKING, ELIZABETH MORAN COMPLETES PERMANENT PROTECTION OF HER 263-ACRE FARM ON SUGARTOWN ROAD On Thursday, November 21, Elizabeth (Betty) R. Moran signed a conservation easement protecting 156 acres on her horse farm at Brushwood Stable and Bryn Clovis Annex on Sugartown Road. This easement, when added to previous easements on her property, completes the protection of the entire 263-acre farm. The conservation easement limits the number and location of future buildings on the land and protects the scenic views of the land from the road. The easement is attached to the land in perpetuity, so even if the land is sold, future owners must follow the terms of the easement. In 1981, founders of Willistown Conservation Trust became aware that the owner of the “Hundred Acre Field” off of Sugartown Road was seeking Township approval for an 82-unit housing subdivision, complete with proposals for extensive public water and sewer. With the assistance of local attorney Peter Somers, the founders organized a partnership of friends and neighbors, Willistown Land Associates LP, to acquire and hold the property under a conservation easement. The first of its kind locally, this community conservation partnership served as a model for the 5,000 acre King Ranch in Unionville as well as 14 other partnerships that now protect 2,000 additional acres in the Willistown area. Mrs. Moran was one of the primary partners of Willistown Land Associates and purchased the Hundred Acre Field from the group in 1983, adding it to Brushwood Stable, site of the Bryn Clovis Barn. The farm functions today as home and nursery to the Thoroughbred mares and foals bred as part of her

renowned Brushwood Stable, which today spans both sides of Sugartown Road. Mrs. Moran is proud of the fact that she purchased the Bryn Clovis Annex with the purse money from the 1985 Belmont Stakes, won by her record-holding horse, Crème Fraiche. Champion horses claiming Brushwood Stable lineage run today in major competitions internationally. Horses are not the first animals to occupy the magnificent early 20th century barn, which formerly was used as a dairy barn and, for a time, housed the legendary Ardrossan beagles. A more recent renovation provided for the present-day layout of horse stalls, supply rooms, and tack rooms. Next to the barn stands a grand run-in shed set into the hillside to complement the barn and sweeping hilltop view. Mrs. Moran grew up in a farmhouse on the property, and her conservation easement adds to the reservoir of 6,000 acres of land permanently protected from development in the Willistown community. “I want to protect the beauty of the landscape I have known from my childhood,” she shares. A small plot of land, next to the stump of what had been a 300-yearold Oak that used to tower over the pasture at Bryn Clovis, is the resting place for many of her beloved race horses, including Crème Fraiche. “He always loved it here, and now he can enjoy this spot forever”. Thanks to her commitment to conservation, so can future generations. Recognizing her exraordinary commitment to the Willistown countryside, our Trustees named Mrs. Moran the Willistown Conservation Trust Conservationist of the Year for 2013.

Spring Meadow Farm MICHAEL AND DEBORAH KIRBY PROTECT 18 ACRES ON SPRING ROAD On November 22, 2013, Michael and Deborah Kirby generously donated a conservation easement that preserves their 18-acre Spring Meadow Farm on Spring Road, where they have resided for over ten years. When asked why they decided to protect their land from development, Michael explained “We wanted to be good neighbors.” With their easement donation Michael and Deborah have indeed sealed themselves into the “good neighbor” category! The fact that they see their property as a wonderful place for future grandchildren to visit also played a factor in the decision to conserve the property. The Kirby’s land is completely surrounded by protected lands on the east side of Spring Road, and now with the protection of their 18 acres, they’ve completed a contiguous 146-acre tract which can never be developed. The farm enjoys many special natural features, including the original spring for which Spring Road is named. Michael excitedly reports that several bald eagles regularly visit the large pond on the property. It’s

been the setting for many special family celebrations, including the wedding of one of their daughters and an annual gathering to celebrate the ripening of over 30 blueberry bushes on the farm. In addition to restricting future building on the property, the new conservation easement protects an important segment of the Crum Creek’s West Branch, as well as an associated tributary, wetlands, and woodland, which are providing important wildlife habitat and helping to maintain water quality. The West Branch and its tributaries were designated by the state’s Department of Environmental Protection as “Exceptional Value” waters for their outstanding biological quality. The Kirbys’ easement also establishes a trail easement that connects to existing trails on neighboring conserved lands. As with all of the Trust’s conservation easements, this easement is attached to the land in perpetuity, so even if the land is sold, future owners must abide by its restrictions.

STAFF AND TRUSTEE NEWS
Movers and Shakers
LEFT TO RIGHT: Chelsea Allen, Kelsey Lingle, Matt Taylor, Carolyn Turner.
Chelsea Allen will be returning to Rushton Farm this year as Assistant Field Manager. Her
farming experience began back in 2009 as Rushton Farm’s first full season intern, working and learning alongside managers Aaron de Long, Ashley Brister, and Fred de Long. During her two years at the farm she not only learned the technicalities of small scale farming, she realized her passion for it. In the years after her time at Rushton, Chelsea worked at Highland Orchards in West Chester, Turning Roots Farm near French Creek, and Kimberton Whole Foods Downingtown as Produce Manager. Chelsea is very happy to be back at Rushton Farm once again and she is looking forward to a great season.
Kelsey Lingle, a recent studio art graduate of Indiana University of Pennsylvania, began
working for the Trust as an intern in November 2012, assisting with visual communications including graphic design, web content development, and email communications. Kelsey’s talents quickly became invaluable and her role at the Trust has grown—first as a part time staff member, then full time as a Visual Communications Associate. An avid outdoors enthusiast with a passion for art and photography, Kelsey feels fortunate to be able to pursue both at the Trust. Originally from Palmyra, Pennsylvania, Kelsey currently resides in West Chester.
Matthew Taylor joined the Trust as a board member in November 2013. An invaluable member of the Trust’s Finance Committee for two years, Matt combines his financial acumen with a deep love of the outdoors in his new role. He and his family have been integrally involved with Rushton Farm since its inception and were one of the first members of the Rushton Farm CSA. Matt is a partner at Veritable, LP, a private wealth management firm and is a graduate of Washington & Lee University. Matt enjoys cooking and eating Rushton vegetables, fishing, trap shooting, learning to scull, and is a “frustrated but hopeful” beekeeper. Matt lives in Newtown Square with his wife Francie Ingersoll and their 17-year old son Campbell. Carolyn Turner was welcomed as a new board member in December 2013.
She and her husband Bob have been deeply involved with the Trust for a number of years, first as partners in the Rushton Land Associates partnership which enabled the Trust to acquire Rushton Woods Preserve, and later as “conservation buyers” of a critical portion of the beautiful Crumdale Farm where they now live. Carolyn has been an active volunteer at Rushton Farm and can always be counted on as an outspoken advocate for the Trust’s mission. She graduated from the University of Illinois and received an MBA degree from Villanova University. She serves on the Architectural Advisory Council for the University of Notre Dame and was recently elected to the Board of the Philadelphia Zoo. Carolyn and Bob have four grown children and live at Wind Hill, their conserved farm here in Willistown.

COLLIN MCNEIL’S STORY
“
JIM GRAHAM PHOTOGRAPHY
Open space has always struck me as a precious, virtually sacred asset. For many years, my prior professional career was devoted to economic development in the Philadelphia region. A particular focus was encouraging the utilization of Philadelphia and neighboring cities and towns’ existing infrastructure. The pervasive, outwardcreeping creation of strip malls and suburban sprawl is detrimental to both the city and the countryside. My life’s path led me to aid the mission of the Willistown Conservation Trust. This relationship has heightened my awareness of just how much of the countryside is being consumed, and how vulnerable the land is. The Trust has a 35-year track record of preserving open space, and its work contributes significantly to the quality of life of the entire region. I was introduced to the Willistown area when I began foxhunting here as an adult. Today our entire family enjoys the sport. It is a fantastic way to admire Willistown’s hills, meadows, trails, woodlands and streams. As a result, all of us have a deep appreciation of the land and the work of the Trust. I am extremely pleased to name the Willistown Conservation Trust as a beneficiary in my will, both because of my concern for the quality of life in the Philadelphia region and my own passion for preserving the sanctity of the countryside. Willistown is an integral part of my life, and I am forever grateful for it.

The Trust Loses a Great Friend
DOUGLAS C. WALKER 1948 - 2013
On November 22, 2013, the Trust lost a great and loyal friend in Doug Walker. He was a close personal friend to many of us, as well as a good friend of the Trust since the beginning. It was this friendship that was always the umbrella for everything we did with Doug. Whether traveling together to Africa or out west, he was fun and funny and wise and self-deprecating to the point of not even wanting his picture taken. He could tell stories that would make us all laugh—and they were usually at his own expense. When we first met Doug in the late 1980’s he was a young banker looking for a beautiful piece of land to build a house. He became part of our second partnership through which we successfully acquired the 450-acre Delchester Farm property and through which he purchased and preserved the property where he lived thereafter. From then on he was an avid supporter of our work and became a founding member when we became an independent land trust in 1996. Although he was on numerous large boards such as the Smithsonian Institute, African Wildlife Foundation, and the Nature Conservancy, he loved our work here in Willistown. He understood the importance of community based conservation and protecting the land people love close to home. As our Board chair beginning in 2010, Doug envisioned our place in the land trust movement and encouraged us to broaden our reach especially in the area of educating children, about which he was passionate (both here and in Africa). After a thorough discussion about possible “mission creep” he wholeheartedly endorsed the nascent Farm and Bird Conservation programs and helped us with a very generous donation to acquire the 50-acre addition to Rushton Woods Preserve the site of so many of our programs today. We could go on and on about Doug. He was always there for the Trust. We will miss him desperately for his warmth, wisdom, generosity of spirit and above all, a friendship that will transcend time.

NEXT STOP, YOSEMITE! One of Our Star Interns Moves On
Congratulations to Todd Alleger, who has worked for the Trust for the past two fall bird banding seasons, on his new position as MAPS Bird Banding field biologist for the renowned Yosemite National Park. Todd epitomizes the high-calibre of talent attracted to the Trust’s internship programs. Todd’s responsibilities at the Trust included banding neotropical songbirds (over 70 species) in the early morning hours from August through early November as well as banding owls at our Northern Saw-whet Owl banding station in the evening hours from early October through late November. Todd arrived at the Trust with proficiency in advanced skills of bird banding, from extraction and identification to aging and sexing songbirds in hand. During his time with us he refined his skills to the point where he was able to help manage the Northern Saw-whet Owl banding station. Todd’s strong desire to continue to learn more about eastern birds and their ecology together with his positive attitude and excellent sense of humor throughout the field season was highly valued by the Trust’s bird banding team. We wish Todd the best of luck and are grateful for all he did for us at the Trust. To support our Internship Fund, please contact Laura de Ramel, Director of Development and Community Outreach, at 610.353.2562, ext. 21 or lkd@wctrust.org.

WE’RE GOING NATIVE Since 2008 we’ve been reducing the mowed areas and replacing turf grass with native wildflowers in the meadow in front of the Trust’s office at 925 Providence Road. This spring, with the help of design services donated by GreenWeaver Landscapes, we’ll be installing an upgraded landscape surrounding the office building comprised of perennials, shrubs and grasses native to southeastern Pennsylvania. Native plants are ideal because they have evolved to thrive in this region and provide diverse habitat for insects and wildlife. We hope you will stop by to check on the transformation and consider including native plants on your own property.
